Searching for low-mass dark matter particles with a massive Ge bolometer operated above-ground

The EDELWEISS collaboration has performed a search for dark matter particles with masses below the GeV-scale with a 33.4-g germanium cryogenic detector operated in a surface lab. The energy deposits were measured using a neutron-transmutation-doped Ge thermal sensor with a 17.7~eV (RMS) baseline heat energy resolution leading to a 60~eV analysis energy threshold. Despite a moderate lead shielding and the high-background environment, the first sub-GeV spin-independent dark matter limit based on a germanium target has been achieved. The experiment provides the most stringent, nuclear recoil based, above-ground limit on spin-independent interactions above 600~MeV/c$^{2}$. The experiment also provides the most stringent limits on spin-dependent interactions with protons and neutrons below 1.3~GeV/c$^{2}$. Furthermore, the dark matter search results were studied in the context of Strongly Interacting Massive Particles, taking into account Earth-shielding effects, for which new regions of the available parameter space have been excluded. Finally, the dark matter search has also been extended to interactions via the Migdal effect, resulting for the first time in the exclusion of particles with masses between 45 and 150~MeV/c$^{2}$ with spin-independent cross sections ranging from $10^{-29}$ to $10^{-26}$~cm$^2$.

Search for the $B \to Y(4260) K, ~Y(4260) \to J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays

We report the results of a search for the $B \to Y(4260) K, ~Y(4260)\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays. This study is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711~fb$^{-1}$, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We investigate the $J/ψπ^+π^-$ invariant mass distribution in the range 4.0 to 4.6 GeV/$c^2$ using both $B^+ \to J/ψπ^+π^- K^+$ and $B^0 \to J/ψπ^+π^- K^0_S$ decays. We find excesses of events above the background levels, with a significances of 2.1 and 0.9 standard deviations for charged and neutral $B \to Y(4260) K$ decays, respectively, taking into account the systematic uncertainties. These correspond to upper limits on the product of branching fractions, ${\cal B}(B^+ \to Y(4260) K^+) \times {\cal B}(Y(4260) \to J/ψπ^+ π^-) <1.4 \times 10^{-5}$ and ${\cal B}(B^0 \to Y(4260) K^0) \times {\cal B}(Y(4260) \to J/ψπ^+ π^-) <1.7 \times 10^{-5}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

Cooling and Self-Oscillation in a Nanotube Electro-Mechanical Resonator

Nanomechanical resonators are used with great success to couple mechanical motion to other degrees of freedom, such as photons, spins, and electrons. Mechanical vibrations can be efficiently cooled and amplified using photons, but not with other degrees of freedom. Here, we demonstrate a simple yet powerful method for cooling, amplification, and self-oscillation using electrons. This is achieved by applying a constant (DC) current of electrons through a suspended nanotube in a dilution fridge. We demonstrate cooling down to $4.6\pm 2.0$ quanta of vibrations. We also observe self-oscillation, which can lead to prominent instabilities in the electron transport through the nanotube. We attribute the origin of the observed cooling and self-oscillation to an electrothermal effect. This work shows that electrons may become a useful resource for quantum manipulation of mechanical resonators.

First measurements of absolute branching fractions of $Ξ_c^0$ at Belle

We present the first measurements of absolute branching fractions of $Ξ_c^0$ decays into $Ξ^- π^+$, $ΛK^- π^+$, and $p K^- K^- π^+$ final states. The measurements are made using a data set comprising $(772\pm 11)\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We first measure the absolute branching fraction for $B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0$ using a missing-mass technique; the result is ${\cal B}(B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0) = (9.51 \pm 2.10 \pm 0.88) \times 10^{-4}$. We subsequently measure the product branching fractions ${\cal B}(B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0){\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+)$, ${\cal B}( B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0) {\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK^- π^+)$, and ${\cal B}( B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0) {\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to p K^- K^- π^+)$ with improved precision. Dividing these product branching fractions by the result for $B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0$ yields the following branching fractions: ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+)= (1.80 \pm 0.50 \pm 0.14)\%$, ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK^- π^+)=(1.17 \pm 0.37 \pm 0.09)\%$, and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to p K^- K^- π^+)=(0.58 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.05)\%.$ For the above branching fractions, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Our result for ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+)$ can be combined with $Ξ_c^0$ branching fractions measured relative to $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+$ to yield other absolute $Ξ_c^0$ branching fractions.

Search for $CP$ violation with kinematic asymmetries in the $D^0 \to K^+ K^- π^+ π^-$ decay

We search for $CP$ violation in the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $988\text{ }{\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We measure a set of five kinematically dependent $CP$ asymmetries, of which four asymmetries are measured for the first time. The set of asymmetry measurements can be sensitive to $CP$ violation via interference between the different partial-wave contributions to the decay and performed on other pseudoscalar decays. We find no evidence of $CP$ violation.

Measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 π^0$ decays

We report a measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 π^0$ decays using a data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment runnin g at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. This decay proceeds mainly via a $b\to sd\bar{d}$ "penguin" amplitude. The results are $\sin 2ϕ^{\rm eff}_1 = 0.92^{+0.27}_{-0.31}~$ (stat.) $\pm 0.11$ (syst.) and $\mathcal{A} = 0.28 \pm 0.21$ (stat.) $\pm 0.04$ (syst.), which are the most precise measurements of $CP$ violati on in this decay mode to date. The value for the $CP$-violating parameter $\sin 2ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ is consistent with that obtained using decay modes proceeding via a $b\to c\bar{c}s$ "tree" amplitude.

Search for a light CP-odd Higgs boson and low-mass dark matter at the Belle experiment

We report on the first Belle search for a light CP-odd Higgs boson, $A^{0}$, that decays into low mass dark matter, $χ$, in final states with a single photon and missing energy. We search for events produced via the dipion transition $Υ(\textrm{2S})\rightarrowΥ(\textrm{1S})π^{+}π^{-}$, followed by the on-shell process $Υ(\textrm{1S})\rightarrowγA^{0}$ with $A^{0} \rightarrowχχ$, or by the off-shell process $Υ(\textrm{1S})\rightarrowγχχ$. Utilizing a data sample of 157.3 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ $Υ(\textrm{2S})$ decays, we find no evidence for a signal. We set limits on the branching fractions of such processes in the mass ranges $M_{A^{0}} <$ 8.97 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$ and $M_χ <$ 4.44 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$. We then use the limits on the off-shell process to set competitive limits on WIMP-nucleon scattering in the WIMP mass range below 5 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$.

Search for the rare decay of $B^+ \to \ell^{\,+} ν_{\ell} γ$ with improved hadronic tagging

We present the result of the search for the rare $B$ meson decay of $B^+ \to \ell^{\,+} ν_{\ell} γ$ with $\ell =e,μ$. For the search the full data set recorded by the Belle experiment of $711 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance is used. Signal candidates are reconstructed for photon energies $E_γ$ larger than $1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ using a novel multivariate tagging algorithm. The novel algorithm fully reconstructs the second $B$ meson produced in the collision using hadronic modes and was specifically trained to recognize the signal signature in combination with hadronic tag-side $B$ meson decays. This approach greatly enhances the performance. Background processes that can mimic this signature, mainly charmless semileptonic decays and continuum processes, are suppressed using multivariate methods. The number of signal candidates is determined by analyzing the missing mass squared distribution as inferred from the signal side particles and the kinematic properties of the tag-side $B$ meson. No significant excess over the background-only hypothesis is observed and upper limits on the partial branching fraction $ Δ\mathcal{B} $ with $E_γ> 1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ individually for electron and muon final states as well as for the average branching fraction of both lepton final states are reported. We find a Bayesian upper limit of $Δ\mathcal{B}( B^{+} \to \ell^{\, +} ν_{\ell} γ) < 3.0 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% CL and also report an upper limit on the first inverse moment of the light-cone distribution amplitude of the $B$ meson of $λ_B$ at 90% CL.

The following branching fractions are measured: $\mathcal{B}$(\OKPHSP) $=$ $(4.22^{+0.45}_{-0.44}\pm 0.51)\times10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}$(\SKPHSP) $=$ $(3.81^{+0.39}_{-0.37} \pm 0.45)\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}$(\ETACD+c.c.) $=$ $(2.91^{+0.37}_{-0.35}\pm 0.36)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}$(\PLPHI) $=$ $(8.18 \pm 2.15 \pm 0.79)\times10^{-7}$, where c.c. denotes the corresponding charge-conjugation process. The intermediate resonance decays are excluded in the four-body decay measurements. We also found evidences for $\mathcal{B}$(\ETACS+c.c.) $=$ $(3.59 \pm 1.52 \pm 0.47) \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}$(\LLKO) $=$ $(2.30 \pm 0.65 \pm 0.25) \times 10^{-6}$. No significant signals are found for \JPSIS+c.c. and \LLKS \ ; we set the 90\% confidence level upper limits on their decay branching fractions as $< 1.85\times10^{-3}$ and $< 2.14\times10^{-6}$, respectively.

Observation of $Υ(2S)\toγη_{b}(1S)$ decay

We report the observation of $Υ(2S)\toγη_{b}(1S)$ decay based on analysis of the inclusive photon spectrum of $24.7$ fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+ e^-$ collisions at the $Υ(2S)$ center-of-mass energy collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The significance of our measurement is greater than 7 standard deviations, constituting the first observation of this decay mode.

Observation of $e^+e^- \to γχ_{c1}$ and search for $e^+e^- \to γχ_{c0}, γχ_{c2},$ and $γη_c$ at $\sqrt{s}$ near 10.6 GeV at Belle

Using data samples of 89.5~fb$^{-1}$, 711.0~fb$^{-1}$, and 121.4~fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider at center-of-mass energies 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.867 GeV, respectively, we study the exclusive reactions $e^+e^-\toγχ_{cJ}$ ($J = 0,~1,~2$) and $e^+e^-\toγη_c$. A significant $γχ_{c1}$ signal is observed for the first time at $\sqrt{s}=10.58$ GeV with a significance of $5.1σ$ including systematic uncertainties. No significant excesses for $γχ_{c0}$, $γχ_{c2}$, and $γη_c$ final states are found, and we set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the Born cross sections ($σ_{\rm B}$) at 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.867~GeV. Together with cross sections measured by BESIII at lower center-of-mass energies, the energy dependency of $σ_{\rm B}(e^+e^-\toγχ_{c1})$ is obtained.

Evidence of a structure in $\bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+}$ consistent with a charged $Ξ_c(2930)^{+}$, and updated measurement of $\bar{B}^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ at Belle

We report evidence for the charged charmed-strange baryon $Ξ_{c}(2930)^+$ with a signal significance of 3.9$σ$ with systematic errors included. The charged $Ξ_{c}(2930)^+$ is found in its decay to $K_{S}^{0} Λ_{c}^+$ in the substructure of $\bar{B}^{0} \to K^{0}_{S} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ decays. The measured mass and width are $[2942.3 \pm 4.4 (\rm stat.) \pm 1.5(\rm syst.)]$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and $[14.8 \pm 8.8(\rm stat.) \pm 2.5(\rm syst.)]$~MeV, respectively, and the product branching fraction is $\cal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Ξ_c(2930)^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}) \cal{B}(Ξ_c(2930)^{+}\to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+})=[2.37 \pm 0.51 (\rm stat.)\pm 0.31(\rm syst.)]\times 10^{-4}$. We also measure $\cal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}) = [3.99 \pm 0.76(\rm stat.) \pm 0.51(\rm syst.)] \times 10^{-4}$ with greater precision than previous experiments, and present the results of a search for the charmonium-like state $Y(4660)$ and its spin partner, $Y_η$, in the $Λ_{c}^{+}\barΛ_{c}^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum. No clear signals of the $Y(4660)$ or $Y_η$ are observed and the 90\% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their production rates are determined. These measurements are obtained from a sample of $(772\pm11)\times 10^{6} B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider.

Momentum-dependent power law measured in an interacting quantum wire beyond the Luttinger limit

Power laws in physics have until now always been associated with a scale invariance originating from the absence of a length scale. Recently, an emergent invariance even in the presence of a length scale has been predicted by the newly-developed nonlinear-Luttinger-liquid theory for a one-dimensional (1D) quantum fluid at finite energy and momentum, at which the particle's wavelength provides the length scale. We present the first experimental example of this new type of power law in the spectral function of interacting electrons in a quantum wire using a transport-spectroscopy technique. The observed momentum dependence of the power law in the high-energy region matches the theoretical predictions, supporting not only the 1D theory of interacting particles beyond the linear regime but also the existence of a new type of universality that emerges at finite energy and momentum.

Searches for electron interactions induced by new physics in the EDELWEISS-III germanium bolometers

We make use of the EDELWEISS-III array of germanium bolometers to search for electron interactions at the keV scale induced by phenomena beyond the Standard Model. A 90% C.L. lower limit is set on the electron lifetime decaying to invisibles, $τ> 1.2\times 10^{24}$ years. We investigate the emission of axions or axionlike particles (ALPs) by the Sun, constraining the coupling parameters $g_{ae}<1.1\times 10^{-11}$ and $g_{ae}\times g_{aN}^{\rm eff} < 3.5\times 10^{-17}$ at 90% C.L. in the massless limit. We also directly search for the absorption of bosonic dark matter particles that would constitute our local galactic halo. Limits are placed on the couplings of ALPs or hidden photon dark matter in the mass range $0.8 - 500$ keV/c$^2$. Prospects for searching for dark matter particles with masses down to 150 eV/c$^2$ using improved detectors are presented.

Ultrasensitive Displacement Noise Measurement of Carbon Nanotube Mechanical Resonators

Mechanical resonators based on a single carbon nanotube are exceptional sensors of mass and force. The force sensitivity in these ultra-light resonators is often limited by the noise in the detection of the vibrations. Here, we report on an ultra-sensitive scheme based on a RLC resonator and a low-temperature amplifier to detect nanotube vibrations. We also show a new fabrication process of electromechanical nanotube resonators to reduce the separation between the suspended nanotube and the gate electrode down to $\sim 150$~nm. These advances in detection and fabrication allow us to reach $0.5~\mathrm{pm}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ displacement sensitivity. Thermal vibrations cooled cryogenically at 300~mK are detected with a signal-to-noise ratio as high as 17~dB. We demonstrate $4.3~\mathrm{zN}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ force sensitivity, which is the best force sensitivity achieved thus far with a mechanical resonator. Our work is an important step towards imaging individual nuclear spins and studying the coupling between mechanical vibrations and electrons in different quantum electron transport regimes.

The cross sections for gamma gamma to eta' pi+ pi- and eta'f_{2}(1270) are measured for the first time.

We obtain 4.0$σ$ evidence of the $Ξ(1690)^0$ with the same data sample. These results shed light on the structure of hyperon resonances with strangeness $S=-2$.
