Developments and results in the context of the JEM-EUSO program obtained with the ESAF Simulation and Analysis Framework

JEM--EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 calibration: from the laboratory to the desert

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) instrument was launched out of Wanaka, New Zealand, by NASA in April, 2017 as a mission of opportunity. The detector was developed as part of the Joint Experimental Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory (JEM-EUSO) program toward a space-based ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) telescope with the main objective to make the first observation of UHECRs via the fluorescence technique from suborbital space. The EUSO-SPB1 instrument is a refractive telescope consisting of two 1m$^2$ Fresnel lenses with a high-speed UV camera at the focal plane. The camera has 2304 individual pixels capable of single photoelectron counting with a time resolution of 2.5$μ$s. A detailed performance study including calibration was done on ground. We separately evaluated the properties of the Photo Detector Module (PDM) and the optical system in the laboratory. An end-to-end test of the instrument was performed during a field campaign in the West Desert in Utah, USA at the Telescope Array (TA) site in September 2016. The campaign lasted for 8 nights. In this article we present the results of the preflight laboratory and field tests. Based on the tests performed in the field, it was determined that EUSO-SPB1 has a field of view of 11.1$^\circ$ and an absolute photo-detection efficiency of 10%. We also measured the light flux necessary to obtain a 50% trigger efficiency using laser beams. These measurements were crucial for us to perform an accurate post flight event rate calculation to validate our cosmic ray search. Laser beams were also used to estimated the reconstruction angular resolution. Finally, we performed a flat field measurement in flight configuration at the launch site prior to the launch providing a uniformity of the focal surface better than 6%.

Measurement and comparison of individual external doses of high-school students living in Japan, France, Poland and Belarus -- the "D-shuttle" project --

Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an electronic personal dosimeter "D-shuttle" for two weeks, and kept a journal of his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of estimated annual doses due to the background radiation level of other regions/countries.

An evaluation of the exposure in nadir observation of the JEM-EUSO mission

We evaluate the exposure during nadir observations with JEM-EUSO, the Extreme Universe Space Observatory, on-board the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station. Designed as a mission to explore the extreme energy Universe from space, JEM-EUSO will monitor the Earth's nighttime atmosphere to record the ultraviolet light from tracks generated by extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In the present work, we discuss the particularities of space-based observation and we compute the annual exposure in nadir observation. The results are based on studies of the expected trigger aperture and observational duty cycle, as well as, on the investigations of the effects of clouds and different types of background light. We show that the annual exposure is about one order of magnitude higher than those of the presently operating ground-based observatories.

muSR Investigation of magnetically ordered states in A-site ordered perovskite manganites RBaMn2O6 (R = Y and La)

The magnetically ordered states of the A-site ordered perovskite manganites LaBaMn2O6 and YBaMn2O6 have been investigated by muon spin relaxation in zero external magnetic field. Our data reveal striking differences in the nature of the magnetically ordered state of these materials. For LaBaMn2O6, the muSR time-spectra in the ferromagnetic state below ~ 330 K reveal a strongly inhomogeneous phase, reminiscent of a Griffiths phase. Within this magnetically inhomogeneous phase, an antiferromagnetic state develops below 150 K, which displays well defined static internal magnetic fields, but reaches only 30% of the volume fraction at low temperatures. A broad distribution of muSR relaxation rates is inferred down to the lowest temperatures. This behavior is similar to the A-site disordered La0.5Ba0.5MnO3. On the other hand, for YBaMn2O6, the muSR time spectra for both (i) the charge and orbital ordered and (ii) the paramagnetic phases reveal rather homogeneous states, namely, an exponential relaxation in the paramagnetic state and well defined muon spin oscillation in the antiferromagnetic state.

Phase diagram and oxygen annealing effect of FeTe1-xSex iron-based superconductor

Phase diagrams of as-grown and O2-annealed FeTe1-xSex determined from magnetic susceptibility measurement were obtained. For as-grown samples, the antiferromagnetic order was fully suppressed in the range region x \geq 0.15, and weak superconductivity appeared when x \geq 0.1. Beginning at x = 0.5, weak superconductivity was found to evolve into bulk superconductivity. Interestingly, for O2-annealed samples, complete suppression of magnetic order and the occurrence of bulk superconductivity were observed when x \geq 0.1. We found that O2-annealing induces bulk superconductivity for FeTe1-xSex. Oxygen probably plays a key role in the suppression of the magnetic order and the appearance of bulk superconductivity.

Evidence of Inhomogeneous Superconductivity in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ Thin Film Using Scotch-Tape Method

We have fabricated thin films of FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ using a scotch-tape method. The superconductivities of the thin films are different from each other although these films were fabricated from the same bulk sample. The result clearly presents the inhomogeneous superconductivity in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$. The difference comes from inhomogeneity due to the excess Fe concentration. The resistivity of a thin film with low excess Fe shows good superconductivity with the sharp superconducting-transition width and more isotropic superconductivity.

Clarification as to why alcoholic beverages have the ability to induce superconductivity in Fe_{1+d}Te_{1-x}S_x

To elucidate the mechanism as to why alcoholic beverages can induce superconductivity in Fe_{1+d}Te_{1-x}S_x samples, we performed component analysis and found that weak acid such as organic acid has the ability to induce superconductivity. Inductively-coupled plasma spectroscopy was performed on weak acid solutions post annealing. We found that the mechanism of inducement of superconductivity in Fe_{1+d}Te_{1-x}S_x is the deintercalation of excess Fe from the interlayer sites.

Pressure study of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2

We investigated pressure effects on transition temperature (Tc) of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2 using a BeCu/NiCrAl hybrid-type clamped piston-cylinder cell. The Tc(onset) was 33K at 0.85 GPa. With increasing pressure, Tc(onset) gradually increased and reached 36.6 K at 2.03 GPa.

Energy gap formation in a valence fluctuating compound CeIrSb probed by Sb NMR and NQR

Sb-NMR/NQR study has revealed a formation of a pseudogap at the Fermi level in the density of states in a valence fluctuating compound CeIrSb. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature, 1/T_1T has a maximum around 300 K and decreases significantly as 1/T_1T ~ T^2, followed by a 1/T_1T = const. relation at low temperature. This temperature dependence of 1/T_1T is well reproduced by assuming a V-shaped energy gap with a residual density of states at the Fermi level. The size of energy gap for CeIrSb is estimated to be about 350 K, which is by one order of magnitude larger than those for the isostructural Kondo semiconductors CeRhSb and CeNiSn. Despite the large difference in the size of energy gap, CeIrSb, CeRhSb and CeNiSn are indicated to be classified into the same group revealing a V-shaped gap due to c-f hybridization. The temperature dependence of the Knight shift measured in a high magnetic field agrees with the formation of this pseudogap.

Phase Separation in A-site Ordered Perovskite Manganite LaBaMn$_2$O$_6$ Probed by $^{139}$La and $^{55}$Mn NMR

$^{139}$La- and $^{55}$Mn-NMR spectra demonstrate that the ground state of the A-site ordered perovskite manganite LaBaMn$_2$O$_6$ is a spatial mixture of the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFI(CE)) regions, which are assigned to the metallic and the insulating charge ordered state, respectively. This exotic coexisting state appears below 200 K via a first-order-like formation of the AFI(CE) state inside the FM one. Mn spin-spin relaxation rate indicates that the FM region coexisting with the AFI(CE) one in LaBaMn$_2$O$_6$ is identical to the bulk FM phase of the disordered form La$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ in spite of the absence of A-site disorder. This suggests mesoscopic rather than nanoscopic nature of FM region in LaBaMn$_2$O$_6$\@.

Evidence for Uniform Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Unconventional Superconductivity in UGe_2: A ^73Ge-NQR Study under Pressure

We report on the itinerant ferromagnetic superconductor UGe_2 through ^73Ge-NQR measurements under pressure (P). The P dependence of the NQR spectrum signals a first-order transition from the low-temperature (T) and low-P ferromagnetic phase (FM2) to high-T and high-P one (FM1) around a critical pressure of P_x ~ 1.2 GPa. The superconductivity exhibiting a maximum value of T_sc=0.7 K at P_x ~ 1.2 GPa, was found to take place in connection with the P-induced first-order transition. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 has probed the ferromagnetic transition, exhibiting a peak at the Curie temperature as well as a decrease without the coherence peak below T_sc. These results reveal the uniformly coexistent phase of ferromagnetism and unconventional superconductivity with a line-node gap. We remark on an intimate interplay between the onset of superconductivity and the underlying electronic state for the ferromagnetic phases.

Unconventional Superconductivity in Heavy Fermion Systems

We review the studies on the emergent phases of superconductvity and magnetism in the $f$-electron derived heavy-fermion (HF) systems by means of the nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) under pressure. These studies have unraveled a rich variety of the phenomena in the ground state of HF systems. In this article, we highlight the novel phase diagrams of magnetism and unconventional superconductivity (SC) in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, HF antiferromagnets CeRhIn$_5$, and CeIn$_3$. A new light is shed on the difference and common features on the interplay between magnetism and SC on the magnetic criticality.

Novel superconductivity on the magnetic criticality in heavy-fermion systems : a systematic study of NQR under pressure

We report the discovery of exotic superconductivity (SC) and novel magnetism in heavy-fermion (HF) compounds, CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, CeRhIn$_5$ and CeIn$_3$ through nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements under pressure ($P$). The exotic SC in a homogeneous CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ revealed antiferromagnetic critical fluctuations at the border to antiferromagnetism (AFM) or marginal AFM. The uniform mixed phase of SC and AFM in CeCu$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$)$_2$ emerges on a microscopic level, once a tiny amount of 1%Ge($x=0.01$) is substituted for Si to expand its lattice. The application of minute pressure ($P\sim 0.19$ GPa) suppresses the sudden emergence of the AFM caused by doping Ge. The persistence of the low-lying magnetic excitations at temperatures lower than $T_c$ and $T_N$ is ascribed due to the uniform mixed phase of SC and AFM. Likewise, the $P$-induced HF superconductor CeRhIn$_5$ coexists with AFM on a microscopic level in $P = 1.5$ - 1.9 GPa. The unconventional gapless nature of SC in the low-lying excitation spectrum emerges due to the uniform mixed phase of AFM and SC. By contrast, in CeIn$_3$, we propose that the magnetic excitations such as spin-density fluctuations induced by the first-order phase transition from the AFM to the paramagnetism (PM) might mediate attractive interaction to form the Cooper pairs in the novel phase of AFM.

Exotic superconductivity in the coexistent phase of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in CeCu2(Si0.98Ge0.02)2: A Cu-NQR study under hydrostatic pressure

We report a pressure ($P$) effect on CeCu$_2$(Si$_{0.98}$Ge$_{0.02}$)$_2$ where an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at $T_N \sim$ 0.75 K coexists with superconductivity below $T_c \sim$ 0.4 K\@. At pressures exceeding $P = 0.19$ GPa, the AFM order is suppressed, which demonstrates that the sudden emergence of AFM order due to the Ge doping is ascribed to the intrinsic lattice expansion. The exotic superconductivity at $P = 0$ GPa is found to evolve into a typical heavy-fermion one with a line-node gap above $P = 0.91$ GPa\@. We highlight that the anomalous enhancement in nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ that follows a $T_1T$ = const. behavior well below $T_c$ at $P$ = 0 GPa is characterized by the persistence of low-lying magnetic excitations, which may be inherent to the coexistent state of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity.

Gapless Magnetic and Quasiparticle Excitations due to the Coexistence of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity in CeRhIn$_5$ : A study of $^{115}$In-NQR under Pressure

We report systematic measurements of ac-susceptibility, nuclear-quadrupole-resonance spectrum, and nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation time ($T_1$) on the pressure ($P$)- induced heavy-fermion (HF) superconductor CeRhIn$_5$. The temperature ($T$) dependence of $1/T_1$ at $P$ = 1.6 GPa has revealed that antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC) coexist microscopically, exhibiting the respective transition at $T_N = 2.8$ K and $T^{MF}_c$ = 0.9 K. It is demonstrated that SC does not yield any trace of gap opening in low-lying excitations below $T_c^{onset} = 2$ K, but $T_c^{MF} = 0.9$ K, followed by a $T_1T$ = const law. These results point to the unconventional characteristics of SC coexisting with AFM. We highlight that both of the results deserve theoretical work on the gapless nature in low-lying excitation spectrum due to the coexistence of AFM and SC and the lack of the mean-field regime below $T_c^{onset} = 2$ K.

Anisotropic spin fluctuations in heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5: In-NQR and Co-NMR studies

We report In-NQR and Co-NMR experiments of CeCoIn$_5$ that undergoes a superconducting transition with a record high $T_{\rm c}$ = 2.3 K to date among heavy-fermion superconductors. At zero magnetic field, an anomalous temperature ($T$) dependence of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ of $^{115}$In is explained by the relation $1/T_1\propto T\cdotχ_Q(T)^{3/4}$ based on the anisotropic spin-fluctuations model in case of the proximity to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical point (QCP). The novel behavior of $1/T_1\sim T^{1/4}$ over a wide $T$ range of $T_{\rm c} < T < 40$ K arises because the staggered susceptibility almost follows the Curie law $χ_Q(T)\propto 1/(T+θ)$ with $θ= 0.6$ K and hence $1/T_1\propto T/(T+0.6)^{3/4}\sim T^{1/4}$ for $θ< T$. We highlight that the behavior $1/T_1\sim T^{1/4}$ is due to the proximity to the anisotropic AFM QCP relevant with its layered structure, and is not associated with the AFM QCP for isotropic 3D systems. We have also found that the AFM spin fluctuations in CeCoIn$_5$ are suppressed by small magnetic field so that $θ=0.6$ K at $H$=0 increases to $θ= 2.5$ K at $H$ = 1.1 T, reinforcing that CeCoIn$_5$ is closely located at the QCP.
