Normal state specific heat in the cuprates La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Bi$_{2+y}$Sr$_{2-x-y}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ near the critical point of the pseudogap phase

The specific heat $C$ of the cuprate superconductors La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Bi$_{2+y}$Sr$_{2-x-y}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ was measured at low temperature (down to $0.5~{\rm K}$), for dopings $p$ close to $p^\star$, the critical doping for the onset of the pseudogap phase. A magnetic field up to $35~{\rm T}$ was applied to suppress superconductivity, giving direct access to the normal state at low temperature, and enabling a determination of $C_e$, the electronic contribution to the normal-state specific heat, at $T \to 0$. In La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at $x=p = 0.22$, $0.24$ and $0.25$, $C_e / T = 15-16~{\rm mJmol}^{-1}{\rm K}^{-2}$ at $T = 2~{\rm K}$, values that are twice as large as those measured at higher doping ($p > 0.3$) and lower doping ($p < 0.15$). This confirms the presence of a broad peak in the doping dependence of $C_e$ at $p^\star\simeq 0.19$, as previously reported for samples in which superconductivity was destroyed by Zn impurities. Moreover, at those three dopings, we find a logarithmic growth as $T \to 0$, such that $C_e / T \sim {\rm B}\ln(T_0/T)$. The peak vs $p$ and the logarithmic dependence vs $T$ are the two typical thermodynamic signatures of quantum criticality. In the very different cuprate Bi$_{2+y}$Sr$_{2-x-y}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$, we again find that $C_e / T \sim {\rm B}\ln(T_0/T$) at $p \simeq p^\star$, strong evidence that this $\ln(1/T)$ dependence - first discovered in the cuprates La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ - is a universal property of the pseudogap critical point. All four materials display similar values of the $\rm B$ coefficient, indicating that they all belong to the same universality class.

Enhanced spin correlations in the Bose-Einstein condensate compound Sr3Cr2O8

Combined experimental and modeling studies of the magnetocaloric effect, ultrasound, and magnetostriction were performed on single-crystal samples of the spin-dimer system Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ in large magnetic fields, to probe the spin-correlated regime in the proximity of the field-induced XY-type antiferromagnetic order also referred to as a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. The magnetocaloric effect, measured under adiabatic conditions, reveals details of the field-temperature ($H,T$) phase diagram, a dome characterized by critical magnetic fields $H_{c1}$ = 30.4 T, $H_{c2}$ = 62 T, and a single maximum ordering temperature $T_{\rm max}(45~$T$)\simeq$8 K. The sample temperature was observed to drop significantly as the magnetic field is increased, even for initial temperatures above $T_{\rm max}$, indicating a significant magnetic entropy associated to the field-induced closure of the spin gap. The ultrasound and magnetostriction experiments probe the coupling between the lattice degrees of freedom and the magnetism in Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Our experimental results are qualitatively reproduced by a minimalistic phenomenological model of the exchange-striction by which sound waves renormalize the effective exchange couplings.

Viscosity measurements in pulsed magnetic fields by using a quartz-crystal microbalance

Viscosity measurements in combination with pulsed magnetic fields are developed by use of a quartz-crystal microbalance (QCM). When the QCM is immersed in liquid, the resonant frequency, $f_0$, and the quality factor, $Q$, of the QCM change depending on $(ρη)^{0.5}$, where $ρ$ is the mass density and $η$ the viscosity. During the magnetic-field pulse, $f_0$ and $Q$ of the QCM are simultaneously measured by a ringdown technique. The typical resolution of $(ρη)^{0.5}$ is 0.5 %. As a benchmark, the viscosity of liquid oxygen is measured up to 55 T.

Quantum Critical Dynamics of a Heisenberg-Ising Chain in a Longitudinal Field: Many-Body Strings versus Fractional Excitations

We report a high-resolution terahertz spectroscopic study of quantum spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising spin-chain compound BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature and longitudinal magnetic field. Confined spinon excitations are observed in an antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N\simeq 5.5$ K. In a field-induced gapless phase above $B_c=3.8$ T, we identify many-body string excitations as well as low-energy fractional psinon/antipsinon excitations by comparing to Bethe-Ansatz calculations. In the vicinity of $B_c$, the high-energy string excitations are found to be dynamically dominant over the fractional excitations.

Enhancement of the effective mass at high magnetic fields in CeRhIn$_5$

The Kondo-lattice compound CeRhIn$_5$ displays a field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction at $B^*\approx30$ T, which occurs within the antiferromagnetic state, prior to the quantum critical point at $B_{c0}\approx50$ T. Here, in order to investigate the nature of the Fermi surface change, we measured the magnetostriction, specific heat, and magnetic torque of CeRhIn$_5$ across a wide range of magnetic fields. Our observations uncover the field-induced itineracy of the $4f$ electrons, where above $B_{\rm onset}\approx17$ T there is a significant enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient, and spin-dependent effective cyclotron masses determined from quantum oscillations. Upon crossing $B_{\rm onset}$, the temperature dependence of the specific heat also shows distinctly different behavior from that at low fields. Our results indicate that the Kondo coupling is remarkably robust upon increasing the magnetic field. This is ascribed to the delocalization of the $4f$ electrons at the Fermi surface reconstruction at $B^*$.

Unconventional field-induced spin gap in an $S = 1/2$ chiral staggered chain

We investigate the low-temperature magnetic properties of the molecule-based chiral spin chain [Cu(pym)(H$_2$O)$_4$]SiF$_6\cdot$H$_2$O (pym = pyrimidine). Electron-spin resonance, magnetometry and heat capacity measurements reveal the presence of staggered $g$ tensors, a rich low-temperature excitation spectrum, a staggered susceptibility and a spin gap that opens on the application of a magnetic field. These phenomena are reminiscent of those previously observed in non-chiral staggered chains, which are explicable within the sine-Gordon quantum-field theory. In the present case, however, although the sine-Gordon model accounts well for the form of the temperature-dependence of the heat capacity, the size of the gap and its measured linear field dependence do not fit with the sine-Gordon theory as it stands. We propose that the differences arise due to additional terms in the Hamiltonian resulting from the chiral structure of [Cu(pym)(H$_2$O)$_4$]SiF$_6\cdot$H$_2$O, particularly a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling and a four-fold periodic staggered field.

Quantum Criticality of an Ising-like Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic Chain in Transverse Magnetic Field

We report on magnetization, sound velocity, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the Ising-like spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain system BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature down to 1.3 K and applied transverse magnetic field up to 60 T. While across the Néel temperature of $T_N\sim5$ K anomalies in magnetization and sound velocity confirm the antiferromagnetic ordering transition, at the lowest temperature the field-dependent measurements reveal a sharp softening of sound velocity $v(B)$ and a clear minimum of temperature $T(B)$ at $B^{c,3D}_\perp=21.4$ T, indicating the suppression of the antiferromagnetic order. At higher fields, the $T(B)$ curve shows a broad minimum at $B^c_\perp = 40$ T, accompanied by a broad minimum in the sound velocity and a saturation-like magnetization. These features signal a quantum phase transition which is further characterized by the divergent behavior of the Grüneisen parameter $Γ_B \propto (B-B^{c}_\perp)^{-1}$. By contrast, around the critical field, the Grüneisen parameter converges as temperature decreases, pointing to a quantum critical point of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model.

Magnetism in a family of $S = 1$ square lattice antiferromagnets Ni$X_2$(pyz)$_2$ ($X = $ Cl, Br, I, NCS; pyz = pyrazine)

The crystal structures of Ni$X_2$(pyz)$_2$ ($X$ = Cl (\textbf{1}), Br (\textbf{2}), I (\textbf{3}) and NCS (\textbf{4})) were determined at 298~K by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. All four compounds consist of two-dimensional (2D) square arrays self-assembled from octahedral NiN$_4$$X_2$ units that are bridged by pyz ligands. The 2D layered motifs displayed by \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} are relevant to bifluoride-bridged [Ni(HF$_2$)(pyz)$_2$]$Z$F$_6$ ($Z$ = P, Sb) which also possess the same 2D layers. In contrast, terminal $X$ ligands occupy axial positions in \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} and cause a staggering of adjacent layers. Long-range antiferromagnetic order occurs below 1.5 (Cl), 1.9 (Br and NCS) and 2.5~K (I) as determined by heat capacity and muon-spin relaxation. The single-ion anisotropy and $g$ factor of \textbf{2}, \textbf{3} and \textbf{4} are measured by electron spin resonance where no zero--field splitting was found. The magnetism of \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} crosses a spectrum from quasi-two-dimensional to three-dimensional antiferromagnetism. An excellent agreement was found between the pulsed-field magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and $T_\textrm{N}$ of \textbf{2} and \textbf{4}. Magnetization curves for \textbf{2} and \textbf{4} calculated by quantum Monte Carlo simulation also show excellent agreement with the pulsed-field data. \textbf{3} is characterized as a three-dimensional antiferromagnet with the interlayer interaction ($J_\perp$) slightly stronger than the interaction within the two-dimensional [Ni(pyz)$_2$]$^{2+}$ square planes ($J_\textrm{pyz}$).

Magnetic and Dielectric Properties in Multiferroic Cu3Mo2O9 under High Magnetic Fields

The magnetic and dielectric properties under high magnetic fields are studied in the single crystal of Cu3Mo2O9. This multiferroic compound has distorted tetrahedral spin chains. The effects of the quasi-one dimensionality and the geometrical spin frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We measure the magnetoelectric current and the differential magnetization under the pulsed magnetic field up to 74 T. We also measure the electric polarization versus the electric field curve/loop under the static field up to 23 T. Dielectric properties change at the magnetic fields where the magnetization jumps are observed in the magnetization curve. Moreover, the magnetization plateaus are found at high magnetic fields.

Multiple quantum phase transitions in a heavy fermion antiferromagnet

We report measurements of magnetic quantum oscillations and specific heat at low temperatures across a field-induced antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP)(B_{c0}\approx50T) of the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn_5. A sharp magnetic-field induced Fermi surface reconstruction is observed inside the antiferromagnetic phase. Our results demonstrate multiple classes of QCPs in the field-pressure phase diagram of this heavy-fermion metal, pointing to a universal description of QCPs. They also suggest that robust superconductivity is promoted by unconventional quantum criticality of a fluctuating Fermi surface.

Adiabatic measurements of magneto-caloric effects in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 55 T

Magneto-caloric effects (MCEs) measurement system in adiabatic condition is proposed to investigate the thermodynamic properties in pulsed magnetic fields up to 55 T. With taking the advantage of the fast field- sweep rate in pulsed field, adiabatic measurements of MCEs were carried out at various temperatures. To obtain the prompt response of the thermometer in the pulsed field, a thin film thermometer is grown directly on the sample surfaces. The validity of the present setup was demonstrated in the wide temperature range through the measurements on Gd at about room temperature and on Gd3Ga5O12 at low temperatures. The both results show reasonable agreement with the data reported earlier. By comparing the MCE data with the specific heat data, we could estimate the entropy as functions of magnetic field and temperature. The results demonstrate the possibility that our approach can trace the change in transition temperature caused by the external field.

Upper critical field and thermally activated flux flow in single crystalline Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$

The upper critical field $μ_0H_{c2}(T_c)$ of Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$ single crystals has been determined by means of measuring the electrical resistivity in both a pulsed magnetic field ($\sim$60T) and a DC magnetic field ($\sim$14T). It is found that $H_{c2}$ linearly increases with decreasing temperature for $\textbf{H}$$\parallel$$c$, reaching $μ_0H_{c2}^{\textbf{H}\parallel c}(0\textrm{K})\simeq60$ T. On the other hand, a larger $μ_0H_{c2}(0\textrm{K})$ with a strong convex curvature is observed for $\textbf{H}$$\perp$$c$ ($μ_0H_{c2}^{\textbf{H}\perp c}$(18K)$\simeq$60T). This compound shows a moderate anisotropy of the upper critical field around $T_c$, but decreases with decreasing temperature. Analysis of the upper critical field based on the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) method indicates that $μ_0H_{c2}(0\textrm{K})$ is orbitally limited for $\textbf{H}$$\parallel$$c$, but the effect of spin paramagnetism may play an important role on the pair breaking for $\textbf{H}$$\perp$$c$. All these experimental observations remarkably resemble those of the iron pnictide superconductors, suggesting a unified scenario for the iron-based superconductors. Moreover, the superconducting transition is significantly broadened upon applying a magnetic field, indicating strong thermal fluctuation effects in the superconducting state of Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$. The derived thermal activation energy for vortex motion is compatible with those of the 1111-type iron pnictides.

Quantum fluctuations and strong mass renormalization in NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2

In a number of quantum paramagnets, magnetic field can induce a quantum phase transition to an antiferromagnetic state which exists for a range of fields Hc1 < H < Hc2. Generally, these compounds exhibit a significant asymmetry in their properties at low- and high-field transitions. Here we present detailed specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements in NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 together with analytical and numerical results. We show that the asymmetry is caused by a strong renormalization of the effective mass of spin excitations due to quantum fluctuations for H<Hc1 that are absent for H<Hc2.

Field-induced Bose-Einstein Condensation of triplons up to 8 K in Sr3Cr2O8

Single crystals of the spin dimer system Sr3Cr2O8 have been grown for the first time. Magnetization, heat capacity, and magnetocaloric effect data up to 65 T reveal magnetic order between applied fields of Hc1 ~ 30.4 T and Hc2 ~ 62 T. This field-induced order persists up to ~ 8 K at H ~ 44 T, the highest observed in any quantum magnet where Hc2 is experimentally-accessible. We fit the temperature-field phase diagram boundary close to Hc1 using the expression Tc = A(H-Hc1)^v. The exponent v = 0.65(2), obtained at temperatures much smaller than 8 K, is that of the 3D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) universality class. This finding strongly suggests that Sr3Cr2O8 is a new realization of a triplon BEC where the universal regimes corresponding to both Hc1 and Hc2 are accessible at He-4 temperatures.

Weak anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field in Fe1.11Te0.6Se0.4 single crystals

We have determined the resistive upper critical field Hc2 for single crystals of the superconductor Fe1.11Te0.6Se0.4 using pulsed magnetic fields of up to 60T. A rather high zero-temperature upper critical field of mu0Hc2(0) approx 47T is obtained, in spite of the relatively low superconducting transition temperature (Tc approx 14K). Moreover, Hc2 follows an unusual temperature dependence, becoming almost independent of the magnetic field orientation as the temperature T=0. We suggest that the isotropic superconductivity in Fe1.11Te0.6Se0.4 is a consequence of its three-dimensional Fermi-surface topology. An analogous result was obtained for (Ba,K)Fe2As2, indicating that all layered iron-based superconductors exhibit generic behavior that is significantly different from that of the high-Tc cuprates.

Asymmetric quintuplet condensation in the frustrated S=1 spin dimer compound Ba3Mn2O8

Ba3Mn2O8 is a spin-dimer compound based on pairs of S = 1, 3d2, Mn5+ ions arranged on a triangular lattice. Antiferromagnetic intradimer exchange leads to a singlet ground state in zero-field, with excited triplet and quintuplet states at higher energy. High field thermodynamic measurements are used to establish the phase diagram, revealing a substantial asymmetry of the quintuplet condensate. This striking effect, all but absent for the triplet condensate, is due to a fundamental asymmetry in quantum fluctuations of the paramagnetic phases near the various critical fields.

Doping dependence of upper critical field and Hall resistivity in LaFeAsO1-xFx

The electrical resistivity (Rxx) and Hall resistivity (Rxy) of LaFeAsO1-xFx have been measured over a wide fluorine doping range 0 =< x =< 0.14 using 60 T pulsed magnets. While the superconducting phase diagram (Tc, x) displays the classic dome-shaped structure, we find that the resistive upper critical field (Hc2) increases monotonically with decreasing fluorine concentration, with the largest Hc2 >= 75 T for x = 0.05. This is reminiscent of the composition dependence in high-Tc cuprates and might correlate with opening of a pseudo-gap in the underdoped region. Further, the temperature dependence of Hc2(T) for superconducting samples can be understood in terms of multi-band superconductivity. Rxy data for non-superconducting samples show non-linear field dependence, which is also consistent with a multi-carrier scenario.

Anisotropy of the upper critical field in a Co-doped BaFe2As2 single crystal

The temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field (Hc2) in a BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 single crystal was determined via resistivity, for the inter-plane (H^ab) and in-plane (H//ab) directions in pulsed and static magnetic fields of up to 60 T. Suppressing superconductivity in a pulsed magnetic field at 3He temperatures permits us to construct an H-T phase diagram from quantitative Hc2(0) values and determine its behavior in low temperatures. Hc2(0) with H//ab (Hc2//(0)) and H^ab (Hc2^(0)) are ~ 55 T and 50 T respectively. These values are ~ 1.2 - 1.4 times larger than the weak-coupling Pauli paramagnetic limit (Hp = 1.84 Tc), indicating that enhanced paramagnetic limiting is essential and this superconductor is unconventional. While Hc2//ab is saturated at low temperature, Hc2 with H^ab (Hc2^) exhibits almost linear temperature dependence towards T = 0 K which results in reduced anisotropy of Hc2 in low temperature. The anisotropy of Hc2 was ~ 3.4 near Tc, and decreases rapidly with lower temperatures reaching ~ 1.1 at T = 0.7 K.
