Topological Structure of the QCD Vacuum Revealed by Overlap Fermions

Overlap fermions preserve a remnant of chiral symmetry on the lattice. They are a powerful tool to investigate the topological structure of the vacuum of Yang-Mills theory and full QCD. Recent results concerning the localization of topological charge and the localization and local chirality of the overlap eigenmodes are reported. The charge distribution is radically different, if a spectral cut-off for the Dirac eigenmodes is applied. The density q(x) is changing from the scale-a charge density (with full lattice resolution) to the ultraviolet filtered charge density. The scale-a density, computed on the Linux cluster of LRZ, has a singular, sign-coherent global structure of co-dimension 1 first described by the Kentucky group. We stress, however, the cluster properties of the UV filtered topological density resembling the instanton picture. The spectral cut-off can be mapped to a bosonic smearing procedure. The UV filtered field strength reveals a high degree of (anti)selfduality at "hot spots" of the action. The fermionic eigenmodes show a high degree of local chirality. The lowest modes are seen to be localized in low-dimensional space-time regions.

Gauge invariance of color confinement due to the dual Meissner effect caused by Abelian monopoles

The mechanism of non-Abelian color confinement is studied in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in terms of the Abelian fields and monopoles extracted from non-Abelian link variables without adopting gauge fixing. Firstly, the static quark-antiquark potential and force are computed with the Abelian and monopole Polyakov loop correlators, and the resulting string tensions are found to be identical to the non-Abelian string tension. These potentials also show the scaling behavior with respect to the change of lattice spacing. Secondly, the profile of the color-electric field between a quark and an antiquark is investigated with the Abelian and monopole Wilson loops. The color-electric field is squeezed into a flux tube due to monopole supercurrent with the same Abelian color direction. The parameters corresponding to the penetration and coherence lengths show the scaling behavior, and the ratio of these lengths, i.e, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter, indicates that the vacuum type is near the border of the type1 and type2 (dual) superconductor. These results are summarized that the Abelian fundamental charge defined in an arbitrary color direction is confined inside a hadronic state by the dual Meissner effect. As the color-neutral state in any Abelian color direction corresponds to the physical color-singlet state, this effect explains non-Abelian color confinement and supports the existence of a gauge-invariant mechanism of color confinement due to the dual Meissner effect caused by Abelian monopoles.

The chiral transition on a 24^3x10 lattice with N_f=2 clover sea quarks studied by overlap valence quarks

Overlap fermions are particularly well suited to study the finite temperature dynamics of the chiral symmetry restoration transition of QCD, which might be just an analytic crossover. Using gauge field configurations on a 24^3x10 lattice with N_f=2 flavours of dynamical Wilson-clover quarks generated by the DIK collaboration, we compute the lowest 50 eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator and try to locate the transition by fermionic means. We analyse the spectral density, local chirality and localisation properties of the low-lying modes and illustrate the changing topological and (anti-) selfdual structure of the underlying gauge fields across the transition.

Localization of overlap modes and topological charge, vortices and monopoles in SU(3) LGT

We present selected recent results of the QCDSF collaboration on the localization and dimensionality of low overlap eigenmodes and of the topological density in the quenched SU(3) vacuum. We discuss the correlations between the topological structure revealed by overlap fermions without filtering and the confining monopole and P-vortex structure obtained in the Indirect Maximal Center Gauge.

Exploring the structure of the quenched QCD vacuum with overlap fermions

Overlap fermions have an exact chiral symmetry on the lattice and are thus an appropriate tool for investigating the chiral and topological structure of the QCD vacuum. We study various chiral and topological aspects of quenched gauge field configurations. This includes the localization and chiral properties of the eigenmodes, the local structure of the ultraviolet filtered field strength tensor, as well as the structure of topological charge fluctuations. We conclude that the vacuum has a multifractal structure.

Vacuum structure as seen by overlap fermions

Three complementary views on the QCD vacuum structure, all based on eigenmodes of the overlap operator, are reported in their interrelation: (i) spectral density, localization and chiral properties of the modes, (ii) the possibility of filtering the field strength with the aim to detect selfdual and antiselfdual domains and (iii) the various faces of the topological charge density, with and without a cutoff λ_{\rm cut} = O(Λ_{QCD}). The techniques are tested on quenched SU(3) configurations.

The QCD vacuum probed by overlap fermions

We summarize different uses of the eigenmodes of the Neuberger overlap operator for the analysis of the QCD vacuum, here applied to quenched configurations simulated by means of the Luescher-Weisz action. We describe the localization and chiral properties of the lowest modes. The overlap-based topological charge density (with and without UV-filtering) is compared with the results of UV-filtering for the field strength tensor. The latter allows to identify domains of good (anti-)selfduality. All these techniques together lead to a dual picture of the vacuum, unifying the infrared instanton picture with the presence of singular defects co-existent at different scales.

Probing the topological structure of the QCD vacuum with overlap fermions

Overlap fermions implement exact chiral symmetry on the lattice and are thus an appropriate tool for investigating the chiral and topological structure of the QCD vacuum. We study various chiral and topological aspects on Luescher-Weisz-type quenched gauge field configurations using overlap fermions as a probe. Particular emphasis is placed upon the analysis of the spectral density and the localisation properties of the eigenmodes as well as on the local structure of topological charge fluctuations.

Probing the chiral phase transition of N_f=2 clover fermions with valence overlap fermions

Overlap fermions are a powerful tool for investigating the chiral and topological structure of the vacuum and the thermal states of QCD. We study various chiral and topological aspects of the finite temperature phase transition of N_f=2 flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions, using valence overlap fermions as a probe. Particular emphasis is placed upon the analysis of the spectral density and the localisation properties of the eigenmodes as well as on the local structure of topological charge fluctuations in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition. The calculations are done on 16^3x8 lattices generated by the DIK collaboration.

Localization properties of the topological charge density and the low lying eigenmodes of overlap fermions

Overlap fermions, which preserve exact chiral symmetry on the lattice, provide a powerful tool for investigating the topological structure of the vacuum. Applying this formulation to zero-temperature quenched SU(3) configurations generated by means of the Luescher-Weisz action, we define the topological charge density with and without UV filtering and study its properties by looking at the density profile and the two-point correlation function. We observe that the density possesses global sign coherent structures, which get increasingly tangled as more and more modes are included. This change of the structure is also detected by the increasing negative tail of the two-point function. We also study the inverse participation ratio of the eigenmodes and discuss their dimensionality.

Construction of the Dual Ginzburg-Landau Theory from the Lattice QCD

We briefly review the QCD physics and then introduce recent topics on the confinement physics. In the maximally abelian (MA) gauge, the low-energy QCD is abelianized owing to the effective off-diagonal gluon mass $M_{\rm off} \simeq 1.2 {\rm GeV}$ induced by the MA gauge fixing. We demonstrate the construction of the dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory from the low-energy QCD in the MA gauge in terms of the lattice QCD evidences on infrared abelian dominance and infrared monopole condensation.

Profiles of the broken string in two-flavor QCD below and above the finite temperature transition

We study the Abelian flux tube profile of mesonic and the baryonic configurations of static quarks below and above the finite-temperature transition in $N_f=2$ full QCD. To reduce effects of ultra-violet fluctuations we measure Abelian distributions of the action density, the color-electric field and the monopole current after fixing to the maximally Abelian gauge. Changing the distance $R$ between quarks for fixed $T/T_c<1$, one can see a clear signal of string breaking for large $R$. The electric field becomes Coulomb-like and the circulating monopole current disappears. We study also the temperature dependence of the flux profile for fixed $R \approx 0.7$ fm. The disappearance of the squeezed flux is observed clearly above $T_c$. Similar behaviors are observed both in the mesonic and the baryonic systems.

Finite Temperature QCD with Two Flavors of Non-perturbatively Improved Wilson Fermions

We study QCD with two flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at finite temperature on the $16^3 8$ lattice. We determine the transition temperature at lattice spacings as small as $a \sim 0.12$ fm, and study string breaking below the finite temperature transition. We find that the static potential can be fitted by a two-state ansatz, including a string state and a two-meson state. We investigate the role of Abelian monopoles at finite temperature.

A detailed study of the Abelian-projected SU(2) flux tube and its dual Ginzburg-Landau analysis

The color-electric flux tube of Abelian-projected (AP) SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the maximally Abelian gauge (MAG) is revisited. It is shown that the lattice Gribov copy effect in the MAG is crucial for the monopole-related parts of the flux-tube profiles. Taking into account both the gauge fixing procedure and the effect of finite quark-antiquark distance properly, the scaling property of the flux-tube profile is confirmed. The quantitative relation between the measured AP flux tube and the flux-tube solution of the U(1) dual Abelian Higgs (DAH) model is also discussed. The fitting of the AP flux tube in terms of the DAH flux tube indicates that the vacuum can be classified as weakly type-I dual superconductor.

Dynamics of Monopoles and Flux Tubes in Two-Flavor Dynamical QCD

We investigate the confining properties of the QCD vacuum with $N_f=2$ flavors of dynamical quarks, and compare the results with the properties of the quenched theory. We use non-perturbatively $\mathcal{O}(a)$ improved Wilson fermions to keep cut-off effects small. We focus on color magnetic monopoles. Among the quantities we study are the monopole density and the monopole screening length, the static potential and the profile of the color electric flux tube. We furthermore derive the low-energy effective monopole action. Marked differences between the quenched and dynamical vacuum are found.

Structure of the baryonic flux tube in N_{f}=2 lattice QCD at finite temperature

We study the flux tube profile in the baryonic system in full QCD at finite temperature on $N_{t}=8$ lattice. We fix the maximally Abelian gauge and measure the monopole and the photon parts of the Abelian action density, the color electric field and the monopole current on both sides of the finite temperature transition. We demonstrate the disappearance of the flux tube in the high temperature phase.

Finite temperature phase transition in full QCD with $N_f=2$ flavors of clover fermions at $N_t=8$ and 10

We present results for QCD with $N_f=2$ flavors of dynamical quarks using nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions at finite temperature on $16^3 \times 8$ and $24^3 \times 10$ lattices. We determine the transition temperature in the range of quark masses $0.6 \lesssim m_π/m_ρ\leq 0.8$. After fixing the Maximal Abelian gauge we investigate the contribution of Abelian monopoles to the Polyakov loop, Polyakov loop susceptibility and confirm Abelian and monopole dominance in full QCD.

The long range properties of the compact U(1) lattice gauge theory with the multi-level algorithm

The 4D compact U(1) lattice gauge theory (LGT) in the confinement phase is studied with the multi-level algorithm. The static potential, force and flux-tube profile between two static charges are precisely measured from correlation functions involving the Polyakov loop. Universality of the coefficient of the 1/r correction to the static potential, known as the Luescher term, and the transversal width of the flux-tube profile are investigated.
