Hydrogen (deuterium) dynamics and thermal stability in ion-irradiated platinum-hydride thin films synthesized at low temperature

Hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) interactions with transition metals play a central role in heterogeneous catalysis and hydrogen-related technologies. While H-Pt surface interactions have been extensively studied, direct investigations of hydrogen incorporation and transport in Pt remain limited due to its low solubility. Here, we study H(D) incorporation and desorption dynamics in metastable $PtH(D)_x$ thin films prepared by low-energy ion irradiation, enabling hydrogen loading far above equilibrium concentrations. Nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) reveals a nonuniform hydrogen depth profile with two accumulation regions: the subsurface and the film-substrate interface. Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) exhibits two desorption peaks near 190 and 230 K, consistent with hydrogen release from these sites. Resistance relaxation measurements, analyzed within a two-parallel-channel conduction model, indicate different relaxation kinetics for subsurface and near-interface hydrogen. Arrhenius analysis reveals two thermally activated processes for $PtH_x$ with an average hydrogen concentration of $x = 0.15$, with activation energies of $130 \pm 18$ meV (subsurface) and $164 \pm 26$ meV (near interface). Above 140 K, D exhibits slower relaxation rates with activation energies of $117 \pm 8$ and $121 \pm 7$ meV for $PtD_x$ prepared under the same implantation dose. Within experimental uncertainty, the activation barriers remain comparable, while the prefactors are reduced significantly for D, indicating isotope-dependent attempt frequencies and zero-point energy effects. TDS simulations based on the Polanyi-Wigner formalism reproduce the experimental desorption spectra by resolving subsurface and near-interface contributions, in agreement with the NRA profile. These findings provide insight into hydrogen kinetics in $PtH_x$ for Pt-based catalysis, sensing, and hydrogen-metal interactions.

Pole position of $Λ(1405)$ measured in $d(K^-,n)πΣ$ reactions

We measured a set of $π^\pmΣ^\mp$, $π^0Σ^0$, and $π^-Σ^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrowπΣ$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $πΣ$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $Λ(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group.

EMPHATIC: A proposed experiment to measure hadron scattering and productioncross sections for improved neutrino flux predictions

Hadron scattering and production uncertainties are a limiting systematic on accelerator and at-mospheric neutrino flux predictions. New hadron measurements are necessary for neutrino fluxpredictions with well-understood and reduced uncertainties. We propose a new compact experimentto measure hadron scattering and production cross sections at beam energies that are inaccessibleto currently operating experiments. These measurements can reduce the current 10% neutrino fluxuncertainties by an approximate factor of two.

Write-ups for workshop on the project for the hadron experimental facility of J-PARC, Partial collection of LOIs at the extended hadron hall and the related topics

This write-up document is a summary of International workshop on the project for the extended hadron experimental facility which was held from March 26 to 28, 2018 at KEK Tokai Campus. This document is a collection of Letter Of Intents (LOIs) related to the proposed beam lines in the extended hadron experimental facility at J-PARC.

High-resolution search for the $Θ^{+}$ pentaquark via a pion-induced reaction at J-PARC

The pentaquark $Θ^+$ has been searched for via the $π^-p \to K^-X$ reaction with beam momenta of 1.92 and 2.01 GeV/$c$ at J-PARC. A missing mass resolution of 2 MeV (FWHM) was achieved but no sharp peak structure was observed. The upper limits on the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle from 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame were found to be less than 0.28 $μ$b/sr at the 90\% confidence level for both the 1.92- and 2.01-GeV/$c$ data. The systematic uncertainty of the upper limits was controlled within 10\%. Constraints on the $Θ^+$ decay width were also evaluated with a theoretical calculation using effective Lagrangian. The present result implies that the width should be less than 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the spin-parity of $1/2^+$ and $1/2^-$, respectively.

Search for the $Θ^{+}$ pentaquark via the $π^-p\to K^-X$ reaction at 1.92 GeV/$c$

The $Θ^+$ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the $π^-p\to K^-X$ reaction in a missing-mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/$c^2$(FWHM) at J-PARC. $π^-$ meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with the beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/$c$. No peak structure corresponding to the $Θ^+$ mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame was obtained to be 0.26 $μ$b/sr in the mass region of 1.51$-$1.55 GeV/$c^2$.The upper limit of the $Θ^+$ decay width using the effective Lagrangian approach was obtained to be 0.72 MeV/$c^2$ and 3.1 MeV/$c^2$ for $J^P_Θ=1/2^+$ and $J^P_Θ=1/2^-$, respectively.
