Ultrafast optical control of magnetization in EuO thin films

All-optical pump-probe detection of magnetization precession has been performed for ferromagnetic EuO thin films at 10 K. We demonstrate that the circularly-polarized light can be used to control the magnetization precession on an ultrafast time scale. This takes place within the 100 fs duration of a single laser pulse, through combined contribution from two nonthermal photomagnetic effects, i.e., enhancement of the magnetization and an inverse Faraday effect. From the magnetic field dependences of the frequency and the Gilbert damping parameter, the intrinsic Gilbert damping coefficient is evaluated to be α \approx 3\times10^-3.

Ultrafast Time-Resolved Faraday Rotation in EuO Thin Films

We have investigated the ultrafast spin dynamics in EuO thin films by time-resolved Faraday rotation spectroscopy. The photoinduced magnetization is found to be increased in a transient manner, accompanied with subsequent demagnetization. The dynamical magnetization enhancement showed a maximum slightly below the Curie temperature with prolonged tails toward both lower and higher temperatures and dominates the demagnetization counterpart at 55 K. The magnetization enhancement component decays in ~1 ns. The realization of the transient collective ordering is attributable to the enhancement of the f-d exchange interaction.

Fermi surface and quasiparticle dynamics of Na(x)CoO2 {x=0.7} investigated by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of Na0.7CoO2, the host cobaltate of the NaxCoO2.yH2O series. Our results show a large hexagonal-like hole-type Fermi surface, an extremely narrow strongly renormalized quasiparticle band and a small Fermi velocity. Along the Gamma to M high symmetry line, the quasiparticle band crosses the Fermi level from M toward Gamma consistent with a negative sign of effective single-particle hopping (t ): t is estimated to be about 8 meV which is on the order of exchange coupling J in this system. This suggests that t ~ J ~ 10 meV is an important energy scale in the system. Quasiparticles are well defined only in the T-linear resistivity regime. Small single particle hopping and unconventional quasiparticle dynamics may have implications for understanding the unusual behavior of this new class of compounds.

Multiband model for tunneling in MgB2 junctions

A theoretical model for quasiparticle and Josephson tunneling in multiband superconductors is developed and applied to MgB2-based junctions. The gap functions in different bands in MgB2 are obtained from an extended Eliashberg formalism, using the results of band structure calculations. The temperature and angle dependencies of MgB2 tunneling spectra and the Josephson critical current are calculated. The conditions for observing one or two gaps are given. We argue that the model may help to settle the current debate concerning two-band superconductivity in MgB2.

Specific heat of MgB$_2$ in a one- and a two-band model from first-principles calculations

The heat capacity anomaly at the transition to superconductivity of the layered superconductor MgB$_2$ is compared to first-principles calculations with the Coulomb repulsion, $μ^\ast$, as the only parameter which is fixed to give the measured $T_c$. We solve the Eliashberg equations for both an isotropic one-band and a two-band model with different superconducting gaps on the $π$ and $σ$ Fermi surfaces. The agreement with experiments is considerably better for the two-band model than for the one-band model.

Electron-phonon interaction in the normal and superconducting states of MgB2

For the 40K-superconductor MgB2 we have calculated the electronic and phononic structures and the electron-phonon interaction throughout the Brillouin zone ab initio. In contrast to the isoelectronic graphite, MgB2 has holes in the bonding sigma-bands, which contribute 42 per cent to the density of states: N(0) =0.355 states/(MgB2 eV spin). The total interaction strength, lambda =0.87 and lambda,tr=0.60, is dominated by the coupling of the sigma-holes to the bond-stretching optical phonons with wavenumbers in a narrow range around 590 cm^{-1}. Like the holes, these phonons are quasi two-dimensional and have wave-vectors close to Gamma-A, where their symmetry is E. The pi-electrons contribute merely 0.25 to lambda and to lambda,tr. With Eliashberg theory we evaluate the normal-state resistivity, the density of states in the superconductor, and the B-isotope effect on Tc and Delta0, and find excellent agreement with experiments, when available. Tc=40 K is reproduced with mu*=0.10 and 2Delta0/kB Tc=3.9. MgB2 thus seems to be an intermediate-coupling e-ph pairing s-wave superconductor.

Lattice vibrations and structural instability in Cesium near the cubic to tetragonal transition

Under pressure cesium undergoes a transition from a high-pressure fcc phase (Cs-II) to a collapsed fcc phase (Cs-III) near 4.2GPa. At 4.4GPa there follows a transition to the tetragonal Cs-IV phase. In order to investigate the lattice vibrations in the fcc phase and seek a possible dynamical instability of the lattice, the phonon spectra of fcc-Cs at volumes near the III-IV transition are calculated using Savrasov's density functional linear-response LMTO method. Compared with quasiharmonic model calculations including non-central interatomic forces up to second neighbours, at the volume $V/V_0= 0.44$ ($V_0$ is the experimental volume of bcc-Cs with $a_0$=6.048Å), the linear-response calculations show soft intermediate wavelength $T_{[1\bar{1}0]}[ξξ0]$ phonons. Similar softening is also observed for short wavelength $L[ξξξ]$ and $L[00ξ]$ phonons and intermediate wavelength $L[ξξξ]$ phonons. The Born-von Kármán analysis of dispersion curves indicates that the interplanar force constants exhibit oscillating behaviours against plane spacing $n$ and the large softening of intermediate wavelength $T_{[1\bar{1}0]}[ξξ0]$ phonons results from a negative (110)-interplanar force-constant $Φ_{n=2}$. The frequencies of the $T_{[1\bar{1}0]}[ξξ0]$ phonons with $ξ$ around 1/3 become imaginary and the fcc structure becomes dynamically unstable for volumes below $0.41V_0$. It is suggested that superstructures corresponding to the $\mathbf{q}{\neq}0$ soft mode should be present as a precursor of tetragonal Cs-IV structure.
