Metallic Spin Liquid-like Behavior of LiV$_2$O$_4$

LiV$_2$O$_4$ spinel is known to exhibit heavy fermion-like behavior below a characteristic temperature $T_K\simeq 20$ K, while it preserves a paramagnetic state down to $T\sim10^{-2}$ K due to geometrical frustration. Here, it is shown that the dynamical spin susceptibility $χ({\bf q},ω)$ in LiV$_2$O$_4$ exhibits anomalous duality which is modeled as a sum of itinerant ($χ_{\rm F}$) and local ($χ_{\rm L}$) components, and that the local spin dynamics inferred from $χ_{\rm L}({\bf q},ω)$ is qualitatively different from that expected from time-averaged bulk properties. The anomaly coexists with the marginal Fermi liquid behavior inferred from the $-\ln T$ dependence of the electronic specific heat over a wide temperature range below $T_K$. We argue that such unusual properties of LiV$_2$O$_4$ can be attributed to the putative metallic spin liquid state emerging near the quantum critical point between spin glass and Fermi liquid states.

Effect of Disorder on Fermi surface in Heavy Electron Systems

The Kondo lattice model with substitutional disorder is studied with attention to the size of the Fermi surface and the associated Dingle temperature. The model serves for understanding heavy-fermion Ce compounds alloyed with La according to substitution Ce{x}La{1-x}. The Fermi surface is identified from the steepest change of the momentum distribution of conduction electrons, and is derived at low enough temperature by the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) combined with the coherent potential approximation (CPA). The Fermi surface without magnetic field increases in size with decreasing x from x=1 (Ce end), and disappears at such x that gives the same number of localized spins as that of conduction electrons. From the opposite limit of x=0 (La end), the Fermi surface broadens quickly as x increases, but stays at the same position as that of the La end. With increasing magnetic field, a metamagnetic transition occurs, and the Fermi surface above the critical field changes continuously across the whole range of x. The Dingle temperature takes a maximum around x=0.5. Implication of the results to experimental observation is discussed.

Spin-orbit effects in a graphene bipolar pn junction

A graphene $pn$ junction is studied theoretically in the presence of both intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. We show that a crossover from perfect reflection to perfect transmission is achieved at normal incidence by tuning the perpendicular electric field. By further studying angular dependent transmission, we demonstrate that perfect reflection at normal incidence can be clearly distinguished from trivial band gap effects. We also investigate how spin-orbit effects modify the conductance and the Fano factor associated with a potential step in both $nn$ and $np$ cases.

Continuous-Time Quantum Monte Carlo Method for the Coqblin-Schrieffer Model

An impurity solver based on a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method is developed for the Coqblin-Schrieffer model. The Monte Carlo simulation does not encounter a sign problem for antiferromagnetic interactions, and accurately reproduces the Kondo effect. Our algorithm can deal with an arbitrary number N of local degrees of freedom, becomes more efficient for larger values of N, and is hence suitable for models with orbital degeneracy. The dynamical susceptibility and the impurity t-matrix are derived with the aid of the Padé approximation for various values of N, and good agreement is found with other methods and available exact results. We point out that the Korringa-Shiba relation needs correction for a finite value of the exchange interaction.

The de Haas-van Alphen effect in Kondo systems with crystalline electric field

The effective mass probed by the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations is studied for a model Ce system under magnetic field higher than the Kondo energy. In the mean-field theory, the mass enhancement per Ce ion in the periodic system is identical with that in the dilute system. With decreasing magnetic field, the effective mass tends to diverge corresponding to a formation of the Kondo ground state. The effective mass can be very different between up and down spins depending on the nature of the 4f wave functions.

Diffraction from Ordered States of Higher Multipoles

Possible ways of identification are discussed of an electronic order of higher multipoles such as octupoles and hexadecapoles. A particularly powerful method is resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) using quadrupolar resonance processes called E2.The characteristic azimuthal angle dependence of Ce$_{0.7}$La$_{0.3}$B$_6$ is interpreted as evidence of antiferro-octupole order. For PrRu$_4$P$_{12}$, eightfold pattern against azimuthal angle is predicted if its metal-insulator transition is a consequence of a hexadecapole order. In non-resonant superlattice Bragg scattering, hexadecapole contribution may also be identified because of absence of quadrupole component.

Extension of the Non-Crossing Approximation for the Anderson Model with Finite Coulomb Repulsion

The non-crossing approximation (NCA) is generalized for the Anderson model with finite Coulomb repulsion U. Resummation of infinite number of terms is performed so as to incorporate all leading contributions in the limit of large degeneracy of the local states. With negligible weight of the doubly occupied local states in equilibrium, the extension is achieved through simple modifications of the lowest order formulae. The single-particle excitation spectrum is calculated with almost the same computational effort as in the original NCA. The present scheme reproduces the scaling behavior of the Kondo resonance in the density of states, and gives reasonable description of thermodynamics of the finite-U Anderson model over a wide range of temperature.

Recent progress of avalanche photodiodes in high-resolution X-rays and Gamma-rays detection

We have studied the performance of large area avalanche photodiodes (APDs) recently developed by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K, in high-resolution X-rays and Gamma-rays detections. We show that reach-through APD can be an excellent soft X-ray detector operating at room temperature or moderately cooled environment. We obtain the best energy resolution ever achieved with APDs, 6.4 % for 5.9 keV X-rays, and obtain the energy threshold as low as 0.5 keV measured at -20deg. Thanks to its fast timing response, signal carriers in the APD device are collected within a short time interval of 1.9 nsec (FWHM). This type of APDs can therefore be used as a low-energy, high-counting particle monitor onboard the forthcoming Pico-satellite Cute1.7. As a scintillation photon detector, reverse-type APDs have a good advantage of reducing the dark noise significantly. The best FWHM energy resolutions of 9.4+-0.3 % and 4.9+-0.2 % were obtained for 59.5 keV and 662 keV Gamma-rays, respectively, as measured with a CsI(Tl) crystal. Combination of APDs with various other scintillators (BGO, GSO, and YAP) also showed better results than that obtained with a photomultiplier tube (PMT). These results suggest that APD could be a promising device for replacing traditional PMT usage in some applications. In particular 2-dim APD array, which we present in this paper, will be a promising device for a wide-band X-ray and Gamma-ray imaging detector in future space research and nuclear medicine.

An Active Gain-control System for Avalanche Photo-Diodes under Moderate Temperature Variations

Avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are promising light sensor for various fields of experimental physics. It has been argued, however, that variation of APD gain with temperature could be a serious problem preventing APDs from replacing traditional photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in some applications. Here we develop an active gain-control system to keep the APD gain stable under moderate temperature variations. As a performance demonstration of the proposed system, we have tested the response of a scintillation photon detector consisting of a 5x5 mm^2 reverse-type APD optically coupled with a CsI(Tl) crystal. We show that the APD gain was successfully controlled under a temperature variation of DT = 20deg, within a time-cycle of 6000 sec. The best FWHM energy resolution of 6.1+-0.2 % was obtained for 662 keV gamma-rays, and the energy threshold was as low as 6.5 keV, by integrating data from +20deg - 0deg cycles. The corresponding values for -20deg - 0deg cycles were 6.9+-0.2 % and 5.2 keV, respectively. These results are comparable, or only slightly worse than that obtained at a fixed temperature. Our results suggest new potential uses for APDs in various space researches and nuclear physics. As examples, we briefly introduce the NeXT and Cute-1.7 satellite missions that will carry the APDs as scientific instruments for the first time.

Self-Consistent Perturbation Theory for Thermodynamics of Magnetic Impurity Systems

Integral equations for thermodynamic quantities are derived in the framework of the non-crossing approximation (NCA). Entropy and specific heat of 4f contribution are calculated without numerical differentiations of thermodynamic potential. The formulation is applied to systems such as PrFe4P12 with singlet-triplet crystalline electric field (CEF) levels.

Hybridization effects and multipole orders in Pr skutterudites

Theoretical account is given of 4f-electron dynamics and multipole orders in Pr skutterudites with particular attention to (i) mechanism of the crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting leading to a pseudo-quartet ground state;(ii) Kondo effect due to exchange interactions involving the pseudo-quartet;(iii) multipole orders in the lattice of the pseudo-quartet in magnetic field.Competition between the point-charge interaction andhybridization between 4f and conduction electrons is identified as the key for controlling the CEF splitting. It is found that one of two pseudo-spins forming the pseudo-quartet has a ferromagnetic exchange, while the other has an antiferromagnetic exchange with conduction electrons. The Kondo effect is clearly seen in the resistivity calculated by the NCA, provided the low-lying triplet above the singlet is mainly composed of the $Γ_4$-type wave functions. If the weight of the $Γ_5$-type is large in the triplet, the Kondo effect does not appear. This difference caused by the nature of the triplet explains the presence of the Kondo effect inPrFe$_4$P$_{12}$, and its absence in PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$.By taking the minimal model with antiferro-quadrupole (AFQ) and ferro-type intersite interactions for dipoles and octupoles between nearest-neighbors,the mean-field theory reproduces the overall feature of the multiple ordered phases in PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$. The AFQ order with the $Γ_3$-type symmetry is found to be stable only as a mixture of $O_2^0$ and $O_2^2$ components.

Synchrony of limit-cycle oscillators induced by random external impulses

The mechanism of phase synchronization between uncoupled limit-cycle oscillators induced by common external impulsive forcing is analyzed. By reducing the dynamics of the oscillator to a random phase map, it is shown that phase synchronization generally occurs when the oscillator is driven by weak external impulses in the limit of large inter-impulse intervals. The case where the inter-impulse intervals are finite is also analyzed perturbatively for small impulse intensity. For weak Poissonian impulses, it is shown that the phase synchronization persists up to the first order approximation.

Spin, Charge and Quasiparticle Gaps in the One-Dimensional Kondo Lattice with f^2 Configuration

The ground state properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice with an f^2 configuration at each site are studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. At half-filling, competition between the Kondo exchange J and the antiferromagnetic intra f-shell exchange I leads to reduction of energy gaps for spin, quasi-particle and charge excitations. The attractive force among conduction electrons is induced by the competition and the bound state is formed. As J/I increases the f^2 singlet gives way to the Kondo singlet as the dominant local correlation. The remarkable change of the quasi-particle gap is driven by the change of the spin-1/2 excitation character from the itinerant one to the localized one. Possible metal-insulator transition is discussed which may occur as the ratio J/I is varied by reference to mean-field results in the f^2 lattice system and the two impurity Kondo system.

Orbital Kondo Effect in Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$B$_6$: Scaling Analysis

Peculiarity of the Kondo effect in Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$B$_6$ is investigated on the basis of the scaling equations up to third order. For the case where the $f^1$-$f^2$ charge fluctuation enters in addition to the $f^1$-$f^0$ one, the effective exchange interaction becomes anisotropic with respect to the orbital pseudospins which represent the two different orbitals in the $Γ_8$ ground state. Because of different characteristic energies for electric and magnetic tensors, scaling with the single Kondo temperature does not apply to physical quantities such as the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Possibility of a bizzare phase is pointed out where the RKKY interaction leads to the spin ordering without orbital ordering. This phase serves as a candidate of the phase IV which is observed to be isotropic magnetically.

Exact Results for Spin and Charge Dynamics of Electrons with Supersymmetry

Excitation spectra in the SU($ν+1$,1) supersymmetric t-J model with long-range exchange and transfer has quadratic dependence on spin and charge currents for all energies. After brief review on the supersymmetry, this paper gives a simple explanation for the spin-charge separation on the basis of a first-quantized representation. A useful identity is derived on permutation properties of SU($ν$) Jastrow-type wave functions, which constitute the ground states for a class of 1/$r^2$ interaction models.
