Search for $B$ Mesogenesis at BABAR

A new mechanism has been proposed to simultaneously explain the presence of dark matter and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. This scenario predicts exotic $B$ meson decays into a baryon and a dark sector anti-baryon ($ψ_D$) with branching fractions accessible at $B$ factories. We present a search for $B \rightarrow Λψ_D$ decays using data collected by the $BABAR$ experiment at SLAC. This reaction is identified by fully reconstructing the accompanying $B$ meson and requiring the presence of a single $Λ$ baryon in the remaining particles. No significant signal is observed, and bounds on the $B \rightarrow Λψ_D$ branching fraction are derived in the range $0.13 - 5.2\times 10^{-5}$ for $1.0 < m_{ψ_D} < 4.2$ GeV/$c^{2}$. These results set strong constraints on the parameter space allowed by the theory.

Measurement of the mass and width of the $Λ_c(2625)^+$ and the branching ratios of $Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{0}π^{+}$ and $Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{++}π^{-}$

Using the entire data sample of $980\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider, we report the measurement of the mass, width, and the relative branching ratios of the $Λ_c(2625)^+$ charmed baryon. The mass difference between $Λ_c(2625)^+$ and $Λ_c^+$ is measured to be $M(Λ_c(2625)^{+}) - M(Λ_c^{+}) = 341.518 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.049\ \mathrm{MeV}/\mathit{c}^2$. The upper limit on the width is measured to be $Γ(Λ_c(2625)^+) < 0.52\,\mathrm{MeV}/\textit{c}^2$ at 90\% credibility level. Based on a full Dalitz plot fit, branching ratios with respect to the mode $Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^+ π^-$ are measured to be $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{0} π^{+})} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^{+} π^{-})} = (5.19 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.40) \%$ and $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{++} π^{-})} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^{+} π^{-})} = (5.13 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.32) \%$. These measurements can be used to further constrain the parameters of the underlying theoretical models.

Evidence for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $Ω^0_c\toΞ^-π^+$ and search for $Ω^0_c\toΞ^-K^+$ and $Ω^-K^+$ decays at Belle

Using a data sample of 980 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we study for the first time the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $Ω^0_c\toΞ^{-}π^{+}$ and $Ω^-K^+$ and the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $Ω^0_c\to Ξ^- K^{+}$. Evidence for an $Ω^0_c$ signal in the $Ω^0_c\toΞ^-π^+$ mode is reported with a significance of $4.5σ$ including systematic uncertainties. The ratio of branching fractions to the normalization mode $Ω_c^0\to Ω^-π^+$ is measured to be $${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} π^{+} )/{\cal B}(Ω_c^0\to Ω^-π^+)=0.253\pm 0.053({\rm stat.})\pm 0.030({\rm syst.}).$$ No significant signals of $Ω^0_c\toΞ^-K^+$ and $Ω^-K^+$ modes are found. The upper limits at $90\%$ confidence level on ratios of branching fractions are determined to be $${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} K ^{+})/{\cal B}(Ω_c^0\to Ω^-π^+) < 0.070$$ and $${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-}K^{+})/{\cal B}(Ω_c^0\to Ω^-π^+) < 0.29.$$

Measurements of branching fractions of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η$ and $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'$ and asymmetry parameters of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0$, $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η$, and $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'$

We report a study of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0$, $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η$, and $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'$ using the data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 980 $\rm fb^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions relative to $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0$ are measured as: $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η}/\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0}=0.25 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.01$ and $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'}/\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0}=0.33 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.02$. Using $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0}=(1.25 \pm 0.10)\%$, we obtain $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η}=(3.14 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.25)\times10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'}=(4.16 \pm 0.75 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.33)\times10^{-3}$. Here the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0}$, respectively. The ratio of the branching fraction of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'$ with respect to that of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η$ is measured to be $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'}/\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η}=1.34 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06$. We update the asymmetry parameter of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0$, $α_{Σ^+ π^0} = -0.48 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.02$, with a considerably improved precision. The asymmetry parameters of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η$ and $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'$ are measured to be $α_{Σ^+ η} = -0.99 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05$ and $α_{Σ^+ η'} = -0.46 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03$ for the first time.

Measurement of neutral current single $π^0$ production on argon with the MicroBooNE detector

We report the first measurement of $π^0$ production in neutral current (NC) interactions on argon with average neutrino energy of $\lesssim1$~GeV. We use data from the MicroBooNE detector's 85-tonne active volume liquid argon time projection chamber situated in Fermilab's Booster Neutrino Beam and exposed to $5.89\times10^{20}$ protons on target for this measurement. Measurements of NC $π^0$ events are reported for two exclusive event topologies without charged pions. Those include a topology with two photons from the decay of the $π^0$ and one proton and a topology with two photons and zero protons. Flux-averaged cross-sections for each exclusive topology and for their semi-inclusive combination are extracted (efficiency-correcting for two-plus proton final states), and the results are compared to predictions from the \textsc{genie}, \textsc{neut}, and \textsc{NuWro} neutrino event generators. We measure cross sections of $1.243\pm0.185$ (syst) $\pm0.076$ (stat), $0.444\pm0.098\pm0.047$, and $0.624\pm0.131\pm0.075$ $[10^{-38}\textrm{cm}^2/\textrm{Ar}]$ for the semi-inclusive NC$π^0$, exclusive NC$π^0$+1p, and exclusive NC$π^0$+0p processes, respectively.

First search for the weak radiative decays $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ γ$ and $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 γ$

We present the first search for the weak radiative decays $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ γ$ and $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 γ$ using a data sample of 980~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. There are no evident $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ γ$ or $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 γ$ signals. Taking the decays $Λ_c^+ \to p K^- π^+$ and $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+$ as normalization channels, the upper limits at 90\% credibility level on the ratios of branching fractions ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ γ)/{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^{-} π^+) < 4.0 \times 10^{-3}$ and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 γ)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) < 1.2 \times 10^{-2}$ are determined. We obtain the upper limits at 90\% credibility level on the absolute branching fractions ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ γ) < 2.6 \times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 γ) < 1.8 \times 10^{-4}$.

Search for long-lived heavy neutral leptons and Higgs portal scalars decaying in the MicroBooNE detector

We present a search for long-lived Higgs portal scalars (HPS) and heavy neutral leptons (HNL) decaying in the MicroBooNE liquid-argon time projection chamber. The measurement is performed using data collected synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's Main Injector with a total exposure corresponding to $7.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. We set upper limits at the $90\%$ confidence level on the mixing parameter $\lvert U_{μ4}\rvert^2$ ranging from $\lvert U_{μ4}\rvert^2<12.9\times 10^{-8}$ for Majorana HNLs with a mass of $m_{\rm HNL}=246$ MeV to $\lvert U_{μ4}\rvert^2<0.92 \times 10^{-8}$ for $m_{\rm HNL}=385$ MeV, assuming $\lvert U_{e 4}\rvert^2 = \lvert U_{τ4}\rvert^2 = 0$ and HNL decays into $μ^\pmπ^\mp$ pairs. These limits on $\lvert U_{μ4}\rvert^2$ represent an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity compared to the previous MicroBooNE result. We also constrain the scalar-Higgs mixing angle $θ$ by searching for HPS decays into $μ^+μ^-$ final states, excluding a contour in the parameter space with lower bounds of $θ^2<31.3 \times 10^{-9}$ for $m_{\rm HPS}=212$ GeV and $θ^2<1.09 \times 10^{-9}$ for $m_{\rm HPS}=275$ GeV. These are the first constraints on the scalar-Higgs mixing angle $θ$ from a dedicated experimental search in this mass range.

First constraints on light sterile neutrino oscillations from combined appearance and disappearance searches with the MicroBooNE detector

We present a search for eV-scale sterile neutrino oscillations in the MicroBooNE liquid argon detector, simultaneously considering all possible appearance and disappearance effects within the $3+1$ active-to-sterile neutrino oscillation framework. We analyze the neutrino candidate events for the recent measurements of charged-current $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$ interactions in the MicroBooNE detector, using data corresponding to an exposure of 6.37$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam. We observe no evidence of light sterile neutrino oscillations and derive exclusion contours at the $95\%$ confidence level in the plane of the mass-squared splitting $Δm^2_{41}$ and the sterile neutrino mixing angles $θ_{μe}$ and $θ_{ee}$, excluding part of the parameter space allowed by experimental anomalies. Cancellation of $ν_e$ appearance and $ν_e$ disappearance effects due to the full $3+1$ treatment of the analysis leads to a degeneracy when determining the oscillation parameters, which is discussed in this paper and will be addressed by future analyses.

Alpha backgrounds in the AMoRE-Pilot experiment

The Advanced Mo-based Rare process Experiment (AMoRE)-Pilot experiment is an initial phase of the AMoRE search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo, with the purpose of investigating the level and sources of backgrounds. Searches for neutrinoless double beta decay generally require ultimately low backgrounds. Surface $α$ decays on the crystals themselves or nearby materials can deposit a continuum of energies that can be as high as the $Q$-value of the decay itself and may fall in the region of interest (ROI). To understand these background events, we studied backgrounds from radioactive contaminations internal to and on the surface of the crystals or nearby materials with Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations. In this study, we report on the measured $α$ energy spectra fitted with the corresponding simulated spectra for six crystal detectors, where sources of background contributions could be identified through high energy $α$ peaks and continuum parts in the energy spectrum for both internal and surface contaminations. We determine the low-energy contributions from internal and surface $α$ contaminations by extrapolating from the $α$ background fitting model.

Measurement of the branching fraction of $Ξ_{c}^{0}\to Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}$ at Belle

Based on a data sample of 983 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we present the study of the heavy-flavor-conserving decay $Ξ_{c}^{0}\to Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}$ with $Λ_{c}^{+}$ reconstructed via its $pK^{-} π^{+}$ decay mode. The branching fraction ratio $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_{c}^{0}\to Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-})/\mathcal{B}(Ξ_{c}^{0}\to Ξ^{-}π^{+})$ is measured to be $0.38 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.04$. Combing with the world average value of $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_{c}^{0}\to Ξ^{-}π^{+})$, the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_{c}^{0}\to Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-})$ is deduced to be $(0.54 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.12)\%$. Here, the uncertainties above are statistical, systematic, and from $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_c^{0} \to Ξ^{-}π^{+})$, respectively.

Parameterization of Electron Attachment Rate Constants for Common Impurities in LArTPC Detectors

The ability of free electrons to drift long distances at high velocities in pure liquid argon under an applied electric field has been exploited for the past forty years to implement detectors with increasingly large volumes for high energy physics research. In this paper, we summarize the electron attachment rate constants as a function of the external electric field for common impurities in LArTPC with data from the literature. We further provide analytical functions to parameterize the data, which are useful to compare with new measurements as well as to make extrapolations.

First wide field-of-view X-ray observations by a lobster eye focusing telescope in orbit

As a novel X-ray focusing technology, lobster eye micro-pore optics (MPO) feature both a wide observing field of view and true imaging capability, promising sky monitoring with significantly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in soft X-rays. Since first proposed by Angel (1979), the optics have been extensively studied, developed and trialed over the past decades. In this Letter, we report on the first-light results from a flight experiment of the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy ($LEIA$), a pathfinder of the wide-field X-ray telescope of the Einstein Probe mission. The piggyback imager, launched in July 2022, has a mostly un-vignetted field of view of $18.6^\circ \times 18.6^\circ $. Its spatial resolution is in the range of 4$-$7 arcmin in FWHM and the focal spot effective area is 2$-$3 cm$^2$, both showing only mild fluctuations across the field of view. We present images of the Galactic center region, Sco X-1 and the diffuse Cygnus Loop nebular taken in snapshot observations over 0.5$-$4 keV. These are truly wide-field X-ray images of celestial bodies observed, for the first time, by a focusing imaging telescope. Initial analyses of the in-flight data show excellent agreement between the observed images and the on-ground calibration and simulations. The instrument and its characterization are briefly described, as well as the flight experiment. The results provide a solid basis for the development of the present and proposed wide-field X-ray missions using lobster eye MPO.

Shell helium-burning hot subdwarf B stars as candidates for blue large-amplitude pulsators

Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) are a newly discovered type of variable star. Their typical pulsation periods are on the order of a few tens of minutes, with relatively large amplitudes of 0.2-0.4 mag in optical bands, and their rates of period changes are on the order of $10^{-7} yr^{-1}$ (both positive and negative). They are extremely rare objects and attempts to explain their origins and internal structures have attracted a great deal of attention. Previous studies have proposed that BLAPs may be pre-white dwarfs, with masses around $0.3M_\odot$, or core-helium-burning stars in the range of $\sim 0.7-1.1M_\odot$. In this work, we use a number of MESA models to compute and explore whether BLAPs could be explained as shell helium-burning subdwarfs type B (SHeB sdBs). The models that best match existing observational constraints have helium core masses in the range of $\sim 0.45-0.5M_\odot$. Our model predicts that the positive rate of period change may evolve to negative. The formation channels for SHeB sdBs involve binary evolution and although the vast majority of BLAPs do not appear to be binaries (with the exception of HD 133729), the observational constraints are still very poor. Motivated by these findings, we explored the Roche lobe overflow channel. Of the 304 binary evolution models we computed, about half of them are able to produce SHeB sdBs in long-period binaries that evade detection from the limited observations that are currently available.

Observation of Radon Mitigation in MicroBooNE by a Liquid Argon Filtration System

The MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) maintains a high level of liquid argon purity through the use of a filtration system that removes electronegative contaminants in continuously-circulated liquid, recondensed boil off, and externally supplied argon gas. We use the MicroBooNE LArTPC to reconstruct MeV-scale radiological decays. Using this technique we measure the liquid argon filtration system's efficacy at removing radon. This is studied by placing a 500 kBq $^{222}$Rn source upstream of the filters and searching for a time-dependent increase in the number of radiological decays in the LArTPC. In the context of two models for radon mitigation via a liquid argon filtration system, a slowing mechanism and a trapping mechanism, MicroBooNE data supports a radon reduction factor of greater than 99.999% or 97%, respectively. Furthermore, a radiological survey of the filters found that the copper-based filter material was the primary medium that removed the $^{222}$Rn. This is the first observation of radon mitigation in liquid argon with a large-scale copper-based filter and could offer a radon mitigation solution for future large LArTPCs.

Evaluation of different recipes for chromospheric radiative losses in solar flares

Context. Radiative losses are an indispensable part in the numerical simulation of flares. Detailed calculations could be computationally expensive, especially in the chromosphere. There have been some approximate recipes for chromospheric radiative losses in flares, yet their feasibility in flare simulations needs further evaluation. Aims. We aim to evaluate the performance of different recipes for chromospheric radiative losses in flare simulations. Methods. We compare the atmospheric structure and line profiles in beam-heated flares calculated with detailed radiative losses and the approximate recipes. Results. Both GF90 and HCD22 recipes provide acceptable total radiative losses compared with detailed one, but there are discrepancies in the different atmospheric layers during the different evolutionary phases, which leads to misestimations of temperature and line intensity. The recipe of GF90 overestimates the coolings in the upper chromosphere greatly when temperature exceeds 10^5 K, which also affects the flare evolution and line asymmetries. Radiative heating in the middle chromosphere only functions in the initial stage and could be safely neglected. However, radiative heating from Lyman continuum could dominate near the transition region.

A fast radio burst source at a complex magnetised site in a barred galaxy

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are highly dispersed millisecond-duration radio bursts. Recent observations of a Galactic FRB suggest that at least some FRBs originate from magnetars, but the origin of cosmological FRBs is still not settled. Here we report the detection of 1863 bursts in 82 hr over 54 days from the repeating source FRB~20201124A. These observations show irregular short-time variation of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), which probes the density-weighted line-of-sight magnetic field strength, of individual bursts during the first 36 days, followed by a constant RM. We detected circular polarisation in more than half of the burst sample, including one burst reaching a high fractional circular polarisation of 75%. Oscillations in fractional linear and circular polarisations as well as polarisation angle as a function of wavelength were detected. All of these features provide evidence for a complicated, dynamically evolving, magnetised immediate environment within about an astronomical unit (au; Earth-Sun distance) of the source. Our optical observations of its Milky-Way-sized, metal-rich host galaxy reveal a barred spiral, with the FRB source residing in a low stellar density, interarm region at an intermediate galactocentric distance. This environment is inconsistent with a young magnetar engine formed during an extreme explosion of a massive star that resulted in a long gamma-ray burst or superluminous supernova.

Complementary astrometry of Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem Images of Phoebe

Phoebe is the only major satellite of Saturn with a retrograde orbit. The Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) took a lot of Phoebe images between 2004 and 2017, but only a selection of them has been reduced. In this paper, we reduced the remaining ISS images of Phoebe. In the reduction, the Gaia EDR3 catalogue was used to provide the reference stars' positions, and the modified moment was used to measure the centre of image stars and Phoebe. Finally, a total of 834 ISS images of Phoebe have been reduced successfully. Compared with the JPL ephemeris SAT375, Phoebe's positions are consistent. The average residuals in the right ascension and declination are 0.08" and $-0.05$", and the standard deviations of the residuals are about 0.2". In terms of residuals in linear units, the means in the right ascension and declination are about 5 km and $-2$ km, respectively; The standard deviations are about 11 km. Compared with the JPL ephemeris SAT427 and IMCCE ephemeris PH20, our measurements show a strong bias and a large dispersion.

Study of Novel Sparse Array Design Based on the Maximum Inter-Element Spacing Criterion

A novel sparse array (SA) structure is proposed based on the maximum inter-element spacing (IES) constraint (MISC) criterion. Compared with the traditional MISC array, the proposed SA configurations, termed as improved MISC (IMISC) has significantly increased uniform degrees of freedom (uDOF) and reduced mutual coupling. In particular, the IMISC arrays are composed of six uniform linear arrays (ULAs), which can be determined by an IES set. The IES set is constrained by two parameters, namely the maximum IES and the number of sensors. The uDOF of the IMISC arrays is derived and the weight function of the IMISC arrays is analyzed as well. The proposed IMISC arrays have a great advantage in terms of uDOF against the existing SAs, while their mutual coupling remains at a low level. Simulations are carried out to demonstrate the advantages of the IMISC arrays.
