Coupling between dynamic magnetic and charge-order correlations in the cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$

Charge order has now been observed in several cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment on the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ that demonstrates the existence of dynamic correlations at the charge order wave vector. Upon cooling we observe a softening in the electronic response, which has been predicted to occur for a d-wave charge order in electron-doped cuprates. At low temperatures, the energy range of these excitations coincides with that of the dispersive magnetic modes known as paramagnons. Furthermore, measurements where the polarization of the scattered photon is resolved indicate that the dynamic response at the charge order wave vector primarily involves spin-flip excitations. Overall, our findings indicate a coupling between dynamic magnetic and charge-order correlations in the cuprates.

Ionization Electron Signal Processing in Single Phase LArTPCs I. Algorithm Description and Quantitative Evaluation with MicroBooNE Simulation

We describe the concept and procedure of drifted-charge extraction developed in the MicroBooNE experiment, a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). This technique converts the raw digitized TPC waveform to the number of ionization electrons passing through a wire plane at a given time. A robust recovery of the number of ionization electrons from both induction and collection anode wire planes will augment the 3D reconstruction, and is particularly important for tomographic reconstruction algorithms. A number of building blocks of the overall procedure are described. The performance of the signal processing is quantitatively evaluated by comparing extracted charge with the true charge through a detailed TPC detector simulation taking into account position-dependent induced current inside a single wire region and across multiple wires. Some areas for further improvement of the performance of the charge extraction procedure are also discussed.

Optical and Electronic Properties of Doped $p$-type CuI: Explanation of Transparent Conductivity from First Principles

We report properties of the reported transparent conductor CuI, including the effect of heavy $p$-type doping. The results, based on first principles calculations, include analysis of the electronic structure and calculations of optical and dielectric properties. We find that the origin of the favorable transparent conducting behavior lies in the absence in the visible of strong interband transitions between deeper valence bands and states at the valence band maximum that become empty with $p$-type doping. Instead, strong interband transitions to the valence band maximum are concentrated in the infrared with energies below 1.3 eV. This is contrast to the valence bands of many wide band gap materials. Turning to the mobility we find that the states at the valence band maximum are relatively dispersive. This originates from their antibonding Cu $d$ - I $p$ character. We find a modest enhancement of the Born effective charges relative to nominal values, leading to a dielectric constant $\varepsilon(0)$=6.3. This is sufficiently large to reduce ionized impurity scattering, leading to the expectation that the properties of CuI can be still can be significantly improved through sample quality.

Production cross sections of hyperons and charmed baryons from $e^+e^-$ annihilation near $\sqrt{s} = 10.52$~GeV

We measure the inclusive production cross sections of hyperons and charmed baryons from $e^+e^-$ annihilation using a 800 fb$^{-1}$ data sample taken near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The feed-down contributions from heavy particles are subtracted using our data, and the direct production cross sections are presented for the first time. The production cross sections divided by the number of spin states for $S=-1$ hyperons follow an exponential function with a single slope parameter except for the $Σ(1385)^+$ resonance. Suppression for $Σ(1385)^+$ and $Ξ(1530)^0$ hyperons is observed. Among the production cross sections of charmed baryons, a factor of three difference for $Λ_c^+$ states over $Σ_c$ states is observed. This observation suggests a diquark structure for these baryons.

Inclusive study of bottomonium production in association with an $η$ meson in $e^+e^-$ annihilations near $Υ(5S)$

We study bottomonium production in association with an $η$ meson in $e^+e^-$ annihilations near the $Υ(5S)$, at a center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=10.866\,$GeV. The results are based on the $121.4\,$fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle experiment at the asymmetric energy KEKB collider. Only the $η$ meson is reconstructed and the missing-mass spectrum of $η$ candidates is investigated. We observe the $e^+e^-\toηΥ_J(1D)$ process and find evidence for the $e^+e^-\toηΥ(2S)$ process, while no significant signals of $Υ(1S)$, $h_b(1P)$, nor $h_b(2P)$ are found. Cross sections for the studied processes are reported.

Observation of Excited $Ω_c$ Charmed Baryons in $e^+e^-$ Collisions

Using the entire Belle data sample of 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions, we present the results of a study of excited $Ω_c$ charmed baryons in the decay mode $Ξ_c^+K^-$. We show confirmation of four of the five narrow states reported by the LHCb Collaboration: the $Ω_c(3000)$ , $Ω_c(3050)$, $Ω_c(3066)$, and $Ω_c(3090)$.

Measurement of Branching Fractions of Hadronic Decays of the $Ω_c^0$ Baryon

Using a data sample of 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we report the results of a study of the decays of the $Ω_c^0$ charmed baryon into hadronic final states. We report the most precise measurements to date of the relative branching fractions of the $Ω_c^0$ into $Ω^-π^+π^0$, $Ω^-π^+π^-π^+$, $Ξ^-K^-π^+π^+$, and $Ξ^0K^-π^+$, as well as the first measurements of the branching fractions of the $Ω_c^0$ into $Ξ^-\bar{K}^0π^+$, $Ξ^0\bar{K}^0$, and $Λ\bar{K}^0\bar{K}^0$, all with respect to the $Ω^-π^+$ decay. In addition, we investigate the resonant substructure of these modes. Finally, we present a limit on the branching fraction for the decay $Ω_c^0\toΣ^+K^-K^-π^+$.

Measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization and $R(D^*)$ in the decay $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ$ with one-prong hadronic $τ$ decays at Belle

With the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider, the decay $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ$ is studied with the hadronic $τ$ decays $τ^- \rightarrow π^- ν_τ$ and $τ^- \rightarrow ρ^- ν_τ$. The $τ$ polarization $P_τ(D^*)$ in two-body hadronic $τ$ decays is measured, as well as the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}(\bar {B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ) / \mathcal{B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- \barν_\ell)$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon. Our results, $P_τ(D^*) = -0.38 \pm 0.51 {\rm (stat)} ^{+0.21}_{-0.16} {\rm (syst)}$ and $R(D^*) = 0.270 \pm 0.035{\rm (stat)} ^{+0.028}_{-0.025}{\rm (syst)}$, are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model. The polarization values of $P_τ(D^*) > +0.5$ are excluded at the 90\% confidence level.

Spectroscopic Observations of a Current Sheet in a Solar Flare

Current sheet is believed to be the region of energy dissipation via magnetic reconnection in solar flares. However, its properties, for example, the dynamic process, have not been fully understood. Here we report a current sheet in a solar flare (SOL2017-09-10T16:06) that was clearly observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory as well as the EUV Imaging Spectrometer on Hinode. The high-resolution imaging and spectroscopic observations show that the current sheet is mainly visible in high temperature (>10 MK) passbands, particularly in the Fe XXIV 192.03 line with a formation temperature of ~18 MK. The hot Fe XXIV 192.03 line exhibits very large nonthermal velocities up to 200 km/s in the current sheet, suggesting that turbulent motions exist there. The largest turbulent velocity occurs at the edge of the current sheet, with some offset with the strongest line intensity. At the central part of the current sheet, the turbulent velocity is negatively correlated with the line intensity. From the line emission and turbulent features we obtain a thickness in the range of 7--11 Mm for the current sheet. These results suggest that the current sheet has internal fine and dynamic structures that may help the magnetic reconnection within it proceeds efficiently.

A peculiar low-luminosity short gamma-ray burst from a double neutron star merger progenitor

Double neutron star (DNS) merger events are promosing candidates of short Gamma-ray Burst (sGRB) progenitors as well as high-frequecy gravitational wave (GW) emitters. On August 17, 2017, such a coinciding event was detected by both the LIGO-Virgo gravitational wave detector network as GW170817 and Gamma-Ray Monitor on board NASA's {\it Fermi} Space Telescope as GRB 170817A. Here we show that the fluence and spectral peak energy of this sGRB fall into the lower portion of the distributions of known sGRBs. Its peak isotropic luminosity is abnormally low. The estimated event rate density above this luminosity is at least $190^{+440}_{-160} {\rm Gpc^{-3} \ yr^{-1}}$, which is close to but still below the DNS merger event rate density. This event likely originates from a structured jet viewed from a large viewing angle. There are similar faint soft GRBs in the {\it Fermi} archival data, a small fraction of which might belong to this new population of nearby, low-luminosity sGRBs.

Radiation Reaction in the Plasma-Based High-Energy Accelerators

Plasma-based accelerators have achieved tremendous progress in the past few decades, thanks to the advances of high power lasers and the availability of high-energy and relativistic particle beams. However, the electrons (or positrons) accelerated in the plasma wakefields are subject to radiation losses, which generally suppress the final energy gains of the beams. In this paper, radiation reaction in plasma-based high-energy accelerators is investigated using test particle approach. Energy-frontier TeV colliders based on a multiple stage laser-driven plasma wakefield accelerator and a single-staged proton-driven plasma wakefield accelerator are studied in detail. The results show that the higher axial and transverse field gradients seen by an off-axis injected witness beam result in a stronger damping force on the accelerated particles. Proton-driven plasma wakefield accelerated electrons are shown to lose less energy compared to those accelerated in a multi-staged laser-driven plasma wakefield accelerator.

Design and Performance of the Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) performed inclusive, double-polarized electron scattering measurements of the proton at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility at Jefferson Lab. A novel detector array observed scattered electrons of four-momentum transfer $2.5 < Q^2< 6.5$ GeV$^2$ and Bjorken scaling $0.3<x<0.8$ from initial beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV. Employing a polarized proton target whose magnetic field direction could be rotated with respect to the incident electron beam, both parallel and near perpendicular spin asymmetries were measured, allowing model-independent access to transverse polarization observables $A_1$, $A_2$, $g_1$, $g_2$ and moment $d_2$ of the proton. This document summarizes the operation and performance of the polarized target, polarized electron beam, and novel detector systems used during the course of the experiment, and describes analysis techniques utilized to access the physics observables of interest.

Measurement of the branching fraction and $CP$ asymmetry in $B^{0} \to π^{0}π^{0}$ decays, and an improved constraint on $ϕ_{2}$

We measure the branching fraction and $CP$ violation asymmetry in the decay $B^{0}\to π^{0}π^{0}$, using a data sample of $752\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The obtained branching fraction and direct $CP$ asymmetry are $ \mathcal{B}(B\to π^{0}π^{0}) = [1.31 \pm 0.19~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.19~ \text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-6}$ and $ A_{CP} = +0.14 \pm 0.36~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.10~ \text{(syst.)}, $ respectively. The signal significance, including the systematic uncertainty, is 6.4 standard deviations. We combine these results with Belle's earlier measurements of $B^{0}\to π^{+} π^{-}$ and $B^{\pm} \to π^{\pm} π^{0}$ to exclude the $CP$-violating parameter $ϕ_{2}$ from the range $15.5^{\circ} < ϕ_{2} < 75.0^{\circ}$ at 95\% confidence level.

Study of $K^0_S$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions

We report a measurement of the cross section for $K^0_S$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions, $γ^* γ\to K^0_S K^0_S$, for $Q^2$ up to 30 GeV$^2$, where $Q^2$ is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon. The measurement covers the kinematic range 1.0 GeV < W < 2.6 GeV and $|\cos θ^*| < 1.0$ for the total energy and kaon scattering angle, respectively, in the $γ^* γ$ center-of-mass system. These results are based on a data sample of 759 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. For the first time, the transition form factor of the $f_2'(1525)$ meson is measured separately for the helicity-0, -1, and -2 components and also compared with theoretical calculations. Finally, the partial decay widths of the $χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons are measured as a function of $Q^2$.

Search for light tetraquark states in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

We search for the $J^{PC}=0^{--}$ and $1^{+-}$ light tetraquark states with masses up to 2.46~GeV/$c^2$ in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays with data samples of $(102\pm 2)$ million and $(158\pm 4)$ million events, respectively, collected with the Belle detector. No significant signals are observed in any of the studied production modes, and 90\% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their branching fractions in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays are obtained. The inclusive branching fractions of the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays into final states with $f_1(1285)$ are measured to be ${\cal B}(Υ(1S)\to f_1(1285)+anything)=(46\pm28({\rm stat.})\pm13({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(Υ(2S)\to f_1(1285)+anything)=(22\pm15({\rm stat.})\pm6.3({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$. The measured $χ_{b2} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fraction is measured to be $(1.50\pm0.34({\rm stat.})\pm0.22({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-3}$, and 90\% C.L. upper limits for the $χ_{b0,b1} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fractions are found to be $2.3\times 10^{-3}$ and $1.1\times 10^{-3}$, respectively. For ${\cal B}(χ_{b1} \to ω+ anything)$, the branching fraction is measured to be $(4.9\pm1.3({\rm stat.})\pm0.6({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-2}$. %($<3.68\times 10^{-2}$ at 90\% C.L.). All results reported here are the first measurements for these modes.

Measurement of the Decays $\boldsymbol{B\toη\ellν_\ell}$ and $\boldsymbol{B\toη^\prime\ellν_\ell}$ in Fully Reconstructed Events at Belle

We report branching fraction measurements of the decays $B^+\toη\ell^+ν_\ell$ and $B^+\toη^\prime\ell^+ν_\ell$ based on 711~fb$^{-1}$ of data collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. This data sample contains 772 million $B\bar B$~events. One of the two $B$~mesons is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. Among the remaining ("signal-$B$") daughters, we search for the $η$~meson in two decay channels, $η\toγγ$ and $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$, and reconstruct the $η^{\prime}$~meson in $η^\prime\toηπ^+π^-$ with subsequent decay of the $η$ into $γγ$. Combining the two $η$ modes and using an extended maximum likelihood, the $B^+\toη\ell^+ν_\ell$ branching fraction is measured to be $(4.2\pm 1.1 (\rm stat.)\pm 0.3 (\rm syst.))\times 10^{-5}$. For $B^+\toη^\prime\ell^+ν_\ell$, we observe no significant signal and set an upper limit of $0.72\times 10^{-4}$ at 90\% confidence level.

Direct detection of a break in the teraelectronvolt cosmic-ray spectrum of electrons and positrons

High energy cosmic ray electrons plus positrons (CREs), which lose energy quickly during their propagation, provide an ideal probe of Galactic high-energy processes and may enable the observation of phenomena such as dark-matter particle annihilation or decay. The CRE spectrum has been directly measured up to $\sim 2$ TeV in previous balloon- or space-borne experiments, and indirectly up to $\sim 5$ TeV by ground-based Cherenkov $γ$-ray telescope arrays. Evidence for a spectral break in the TeV energy range has been provided by indirect measurements of H.E.S.S., although the results were qualified by sizeable systematic uncertainties. Here we report a direct measurement of CREs in the energy range $25~{\rm GeV}-4.6~{\rm TeV}$ by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) with unprecedentedly high energy resolution and low background. The majority of the spectrum can be properly fitted by a smoothly broken power-law model rather than a single power-law model. The direct detection of a spectral break at $E \sim0.9$ TeV confirms the evidence found by H.E.S.S., clarifies the behavior of the CRE spectrum at energies above 1 TeV and sheds light on the physical origin of the sub-TeV CREs.

Universal superconducting precursor in the cuprates

The nature of the superconducting (SC) precursor in the cuprates has been the subject of intense interest, with profound implications for both the normal and the SC states. Different experimental probes have led to vastly disparate conclusions on the temperature range of superconducting fluctuations. The main challenges have been to separate the SC response from complex normal-state behavior, and to distinguish the underlying behavior of the quintessential CuO$_{2}$ layers from compound-specific properties. Here we reveal remarkably simple and universal behavior of the SC precursor using torque magnetometry, a unique thermodynamic probe with extremely high sensitivity to SC diamagnetism. We comprehensively study four distinct cuprate compounds: single-CuO$_{2}$-layer La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LSCO), Bi$_{2}$(Sr,La)$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201), and double-layer Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{0.95}$Y$_{0.05}$CuO$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). Our approach, which focuses on the nonlinear diamagnetic response, completely removes normal-state contributions and thus allows us to trace the diamagnetic signal above Tc with great precision. We find that SC diamagnetism vanishes in an unusual, yet surprisingly simple exponential manner, marked by a universal temperature scale that is independent of compound and Tc. We discuss the distinct possibility that this unusual behavior signifies the proliferation of SC clusters as a result of the intrinsic inhomogeneity known to be an inherent property of the cuprates.
