The Conversion of CESR to Operate as the Test Accelerator, CesrTA, Part 4: Superconducting Wiggler Diagnostics

Cornell's electron/positron storage ring (CESR) was modified over a series of accelerator shutdowns beginning in May 2008, which substantially improves its capability for research and development for particle accelerators. CESR's energy span from 1.8 to 5.6 GeV with both electrons and positrons makes it appropriate for the study of a wide spectrum of accelerator physics issues and instrumentation related to present light sources and future lepton damping rings. Additionally a number of these are also relevant for the beam physics of proton accelerators. This paper, the last in a series of four, describes the vacuum system modifications of the superconducting wigglers to accommodate the diagnostic instrumentation for the study of electron cloud (EC) behavior within wigglers. Earlier papers provided an overview of the accelerator physics program, the general modifications of CESR, the modifications of the vacuum system necessary for the conversion of CESR to the test accelerator, CesrTA, enhanced to study such subjects as low emittance tuning methods, EC effects, intra-beam scattering, fast ion instabilities as well as general improvements to beam instrumentation. While the initial studies of CesrTA focussed on questions related to the International Linear Collider damping ring design, CESR is a very versatile storage ring, capable of studying a wide range of accelerator physics and instrumentation questions.

Anisotropic Contrast Optical Microscope

An optical microscope is described that reveals contrast in the Mueller matrix images of a thin, transparent or semi-transparent specimen located within an anisotropic object plane (anisotropic filter). The specimen changes the anisotropy of the filter and thereby produces contrast within the Mueller matrix images. Here we use an anisotropic filter composed of a semi-transparent, nanostructured thin film with sub-wavelength thickness placed within the object plane. The sample is illuminated as in common optical microscopy but the light is modulated in its polarization using combinations of linear polarizers and phase plate (compensator) to control and analyze the state of polarization. Direct generalized ellipsometry data analysis approaches permit extraction of fundamental Mueller matrix object plane images dispensing with the need of Fourier expansion methods. Generalized ellipsometry model approaches are used for quantitative image analyses. We demonstrate the anisotropic contrast optical microscope by measuring lithographically defined micro-patterned anisotropic filters, and we quantify the adsorption of an organic self-assembled monolayer film onto the anisotropic filter. In our current instrument we estimate the limit of detection for organic volumetric mass within the object plane of $\approx$ 49 fg within $\approx$ 7$\times$7~$μ$m$^2$ object surface area. Compared to a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation instrumentation, where contemporary limits require a total load of $\approx$ 500~pg for detection, the instrumentation demonstrated here improves sensitivity to a total mass required for detection by 4 orders of magnitude. We present further applications to detection of nanoparticles, to novel approaches for imaging chromatography, and to new contrast modalities for observations on living cells.

Study of $\mathbf{B^{0}\rightarrowρ^{+}ρ^{-}}$ decays and implications for the CKM angle $\mathbf{ϕ_2}$

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and the longitudinal polarization fraction of $B^{0}\rightarrowρ^+ρ^-$ decays, as well as the time-dependent $CP$ violating parameters in decays into longitudinally polarized $ρ^{+}ρ^{-}$ pairs with Belle's final data set of $772\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs, at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, collected at the asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider KEKB. We obtain ${\cal B}(B^0 \rightarrow ρ^+ ρ^-)=(28.3\pm 1.5\;(\rm stat) \pm 1.5\;(\rm syst))\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.988\pm 0.012\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.023\;(\rm syst)$, ${\cal A}_{CP} = 0.00\pm0.10\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.06\;(\rm syst)$, ${\cal S}_{CP} = -0.13\pm0.15\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.05\;(\rm syst).$ We perform an isospin analysis to constrain the CKM angle $ϕ_2$ and obtain two solutions with \begin{eqnarray} ϕ_{2} = (93.7\pm10.6)^{\circ},\nonumber \end{eqnarray} being most compatible with other Standard-Model based fits to the data.

Asteroseismology of a $δ$ Scuti star CoRoT 102749568

For $δ$ Scuti star CoRoT 102749568, 52 independent frequencies were obtained by Papar$\acute{o}$ et al. 2013. We find that there are 4 multiplets and 8 doublets with nearly equal split caused by rotation. Differential rotation is suggested instead of rigid body rotation to explain the equal split phenomenon. Grids of models are computed with MESA to fit observational frequencies of CoRoT 102749568. After rejecting modes of $m\neq0$ in multiplets and doublets, we identify 31 modes of $m = 0$ and 3 modes of $m\neq0$, including 4 modes of $l = 0$, 9 modes of $l=1$, 11 modes of $l=2$, and 10 modes of $l=3$. The mean error is 0.447$μ$Hz for the best-fitting model, and the physical parameters of the corresponding model are as followings: $M=1.95$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, $Z=0.025$, $T_{\rm eff}=7096$ K, log$g=3.727$, $L=22.77$ $\rm L_{\odot}$, $Age=1.113$ Gyr.

Measurements of the $Υ(10860)$ and $Υ(11020)$ resonances via $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowΥ(n{\rm S})π^+π^-)$

We report new measurements of the total cross sections for $e^+e^-\to Υ(n{\rm S})π^+π^-$ ($n$ = 1, 2, 3) and $e^+e^-\to b\bar b$ from a high-luminosity fine scan of the region $\sqrt{s} = 10.63$-$11.05$ GeV with the Belle detector. We observe that the $Υ(n{\rm S})π^+π^-$ spectra have little or no non-resonant component and extract from them the masses and widths of $Υ(10860)$ and $Υ(11020)$ and their relative phase. We find $M_{10860}=(10891.1\pm3.2^{+0.6}_{-1.7})$ MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ_{10860}=(53.7^{+7.1}_{-5.6}\,^{+1.3}_{-5.4})$ MeV and report first measurements $M_{11020}=(10987.5^{+6.4}_{-2.5}\,^{+9.0}_{-2.1})$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ_{11020}=(61^{+9}_{-19}\,^{+2}_{-20})$ MeV, and $ϕ_{\rm 11020}-ϕ_{\rm 10860} = (-1.0\pm0.4\,^{+1.4}_{-0.1})$ rad.

Study of Excited $Ξ_c$ States Decaying into $Ξ_c^0$ and $Ξ_c^+$ Baryons

Using a data sample of 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we report the results of a study of excited $Ξ_c$ states that decay, via the emission of photons and/or charged pions, into $Ξ_c^0$ or $Ξ_c^+$ ground state charmed-strange baryons. We present new measurements of the masses of all members of the $Ξ_c^{\prime}$, $Ξ_c(2645)$, $Ξ_c(2790)$, $Ξ_c(2815)$, and $Ξ_c(2980)$ isodoublets, measurements of the intrinsic widths of those that decay strongly, and evidence of previously unknown transitions.

Magnetostructural martensitic transformations with large volume changes and magneto-strains in all-d-metal Heusler alloys

The all-d-metal Mn2-based Heusler ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Mn50Ni40-xCoxTi10 (x = 8 and 9.5) are realized. With a generic comparison between d-metal Ti and main-group elements in lowering the transformation temperature, the magnetostructural martensitic transformations are established by further introducing Co to produce local ferromagnetic Mn-Co-Mn configurations. A 5-fold modulation and (3, -2) stacking of [00 10] of martensite are determined by XRD and HRTEM analysis. Based on the transformation, a large magneto-strain of 6900 ppm and a large volume change of -2.54% are observed in polycrystalline samples, which makes the all-d-metal magnetic martensitic alloys of interest for magnetic/pressure multi-field driven applications.

Nonlinear optomechanics with gain and loss: amplifying higher-order sideband and group delay

We study the nonlinear optomechanically-induced transparency (OMIT) with gain and loss. We find that (i) for a single active cavity, significant enhancement can be achieved for the higher-order sidebands, including the transmission rate and the group delay; (ii) for active- passive-coupled cavities, hundreds of microsecond of optical delay or advance are attainable for the nonlinear sideband pulses in the parity-time-symmetric regime. The active higher-order OMIT effects, as firstly revealed here, open up the way to make a low-power optomechaical amplifier, which can amplify both the strength and group delay of not only the probe light but also its higher-order sidebands.

Partially dark optical molecule via phase control

We study the tunable photonic distribution in an optical molecule consisting of two linearly coupled single-mode cavities. With the inter-cavity coupling and two driving fields, the energy levels of the optical-molecule system form a closed cyclic energy-level diagram, and the phase difference between the driving fields serves as a sensitive controller on the dynamics of the system. Due to the quantum interference effect, we can realize a partially dark optical molecule, where the steady-state mean photon number in one of the cavities achieves zero even under the external driving. And the dark cavity can be changed from one of the cavities to the other by only adjusting the phase difference. Furthermore, we show that when one of the cavities couples with an atomic ensemble, it will be dark under the same condition as that without atoms, but the condition for the other cavity to be dark is modified.

$μ$SR Insight into the Impurity Problem in Quantum Kagome Antiferromagnets

Impurities, which are inherently present in any real material, may play an important role in the magnetism of frustrated spin systems with spin-liquid ground states. We address the impurity issue in quantum kagome antiferromagnets by investigating ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$SO$_4$ (Zn-brochantite) by means of muon spin spectroscopy. We show that muons couple to the impurity magnetism, originating from Cu-Zn intersite disorder, and that the impurities are highly correlated with the kagome spins, allowing us to probe the intrinsic kagome physics via a Kondo-like effect. The low-temperature plateau in local susceptibility identifies the spin-liquid ground state as being gapless. The corresponding spin fluctuations exhibit an unconventional spectral density and an intriguing field dependence.

Measurement of the CKM angle $φ_1$ in $B^0\to\bar{D}{}^{(*)0}h^0$, $\bar{D}{}^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays with time-dependent binned Dalitz plot analysis

We report a measurement of the CP violation parameter $φ_1$ obtained in a time-dependent analysis of $B^0\to\bar{D}{}^{(*)0}h^0$ decays followed by $\bar{D}{}^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decay. A model-independent measurement is performed using the binned Dalitz plot technique. The measured value is $φ_1 = 11.7^{\circ}\pm7.8^{\circ}({\rm stat.})\pm 2.1^{\circ}({\rm syst.})$. Treating $\sin{2φ_1}$ and $\cos{2φ_1}$ as independent parameters, we obtain $\sin{2φ_1} = 0.43\pm 0.27({\rm stat.})\pm 0.08({\rm syst.})$ and $\cos{2φ_1} = 1.06\pm 0.33({\rm stat.})^{+0.21}_{-0.15}({\rm syst.})$. The results are obtained with a full data sample of $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider.

Doping dependent charge order correlations in electron-doped cuprates

Understanding the interplay between charge order (CO) and other phenomena (e.g. pseudogap, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity) is one of the central questions in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The discovery that similar forms of CO exist in both hole- and electron-doped cuprates opened a path to determine what subset of the CO phenomenology is universal to all the cuprates. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to measure the charge order correlations in electron-doped cuprates (La2-xCexCuO4 and Nd2-xCexCuO4) and their relationship to antiferromagnetism, pseudogap, and superconductivity. Detailed measurements of Nd2-xCexCuO4 show that CO is present in the x = 0.059 to 0.166 range, and that its doping dependent wavevector is consistent with the separation between straight segments of the Fermi surface. The CO onset temperature is highest between x = 0.106 and 0.166, but decreases at lower doping levels, indicating that it is not tied to the appearance of antiferromagnetic correlations or the pseudogap. Near optimal doping, where the CO wavevector is also consistent with a previously observed phonon anomaly, measurements of the CO below and above the superconducting transition temperature, or in a magnetic field, show that the CO is insensitive to superconductivity. Overall these findings indicate that, while verified in the electron-doped cuprates, material-dependent details determine whether the CO correlations acquire sufficient strength to compete for the ground state of the cuprates.

Windows open for highly tunable magnetostructural phase transitions

An attempt was made to tailor the magnetostructural transitions (MSTs) over a wide temperature range under the principle of isostructural alloying. A series of wide Curie-temperature windows (CTWs) with a maximal width of 377 K between 69 and 446 K were established in the Mn1-yCoyNiGe1-xSix system. Throughout the CTWs, the magnetic-field-induced metamagnetic behavior and giant magnetocaloric effects are obtained. The (Mn,Co)Ni(Ge,Si) system shows great potential as multifunctional phase-transition materials that work in a wide range covering liquid-nitrogen and above water-boiling temperatures. Moreover, general understanding to isostructural alloying and CTWs constructed in (Mn,Co)Ni(Ge,Si) as well as (Mn,Fe)Ni(Ge,Si) are provided.

Asteroseismology of the $δ$ Scuti star HD 50844

Aims. We aim to probe the internal structure and investigate more detailed information of the $δ$ Scuti star HD 50844 with asteroseismology. Methods. We analyse the observed frequencies of the $δ$ Scuti star HD 50844 obtained by Balona (2014), and search for possible multiplets based on the rotational splitting law of g-mode. We tried to disentangle the frequency spectra of HD 50844 by means of the rotational splitting only. We then compare them with theoretical pulsation modes, which correspond to stellar evolutionary models with various sets of initial metallicity and stellar mass, to find the best-fitting model. Results. There are three multiplets including two complete triplets and one incomplete quintuplet, in which mode identifications for spherical harmonic degree $l$ and azimuthal number $m$ are unique. The corresponding rotational period of HD 50844 is found to be 2.44$^{+0.13}_{-0.08}$ days. The physical parameters of HD 50844 are well limited in a small region by three modes identified as nonradial ones ($f_{11}$, $f_{22}$, and $f_{29}$) and by the fundamental radial mode ($f_{4}$). Our results show that the three nonradial modes ($f_{11}$, $f_{22}$, and $f_{29}$) are all mixed modes, which mainly represent the property of the helium core. The fundamental radial mode ($f_{4}$) mainly represents the property of the stellar envelope. In order to fit these four pulsation modes, both the helium core and the stellar envelope must be matched to the actual structure of HD 50844. Finally, the mass of the helium core of HD 50844 is estimated to be 0.173 $\pm$ 0.004 $M_{\odot}$ for the first time. The physical parameters of HD 50844 are determined to be $M=$ 1.81 $\pm$ 0.01 $M_{\odot}$, $Z=$ 0.008 $\pm$ 0.001. $T_{\rm eff}=$ 7508 $\pm$ 125 K, log$g=$ 3.658 $\pm$ 0.004, $R=$ 3.300 $\pm$ 0.023 $R_{\odot}$, $L=$ 30.98 $\pm$ 2.39 $L_{\odot}$.

Measurement of $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-ψ(2S)$ via Initial State Radiation at Belle

We report measurement of the cross section of $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)$ between 4.0 and $5.5 {\rm GeV}$, based on an analysis of initial state radiation events in a $980 \rm fb^{-1}$ data sample recorded with the Belle detector. The properties of the $Y(4360)$ and $Y(4660)$ states are determined. Fitting the mass spectrum of $π^+π^-ψ(2S)$ with two coherent Breit-Wigner functions, we find two solutions with identical mass and width but different couplings to electron-positron pairs: $M_{Y(4360)} = (4347\pm 6\pm 3) {\rm MeV}/c^2$, $Γ_{Y(4360)} = (103\pm 9\pm 5) {\rm MeV}$, $M_{Y(4660)} = (4652\pm10\pm 8) {\rm MeV}/c^2$, $Γ_{Y(4660)} = (68\pm 11\pm 1) \rm MeV$; and ${\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (10.9\pm 0.6\pm 0.7) \rm eV$ and ${\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (8.1\pm 1.1\pm 0.5) \rm eV$ for one solution; or ${\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (9.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.6) \rm eV$ and ${\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (2.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.2) \rm eV$ for the other. Here, the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. Evidence for a charged charmoniumlike structure at $4.05 {\rm GeV}/c^2$ is observed in the $π^{\pm}ψ(2S)$ intermediate state in the $Y(4360)$ decays.

Precision Studies of Observables in pp->W->l nu and pp->gamma,Z->l+l- processes at the LHC

This report was prepared in the context of the LPCC "Electroweak Precision Measurements at the LHC WG" and summarizes the activity of a subgroup dedicated to the systematic comparison of public Monte Carlo codes, which describe the Drell-Yan processes at hadron colliders, in particular at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This work represents an important step towards the definition of an accurate simulation framework necessary for very high-precision measurements of electroweak (EW) observables such as the $W$ boson mass and the weak mixing angle. All the codes considered in this report share at least next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in the prediction of the total cross sections in an expansion either in the strong or in the EW coupling constant. The NLO fixed-order predictions have been scrutinized at the technical level, using exactly the same inputs, setup and perturbative accuracy, in order to quantify the level of agreement of different implementations of the same calculation. A dedicated comparison, again at the technical level, of three codes that reach next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) accuracy in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) for the total cross section has also been performed. These fixed-order results are a well-defined reference that allows a classification of the impact of higher-order sets of radiative corrections. Several examples of higher-order effects due to the strong or the EW interaction are discussed in this common framework. Also the combination of QCD and EW corrections is discussed, together with the ambiguities that affect the final result, due to the choice of a specific combination recipe.

Studies of charmed strange baryons in the $ΛD$ final state at Belle

We report the discovery of $Ξ_{c}(3055)^{0}$, observed by its decay into the final state $ΛD^{0}$, and present the first observation and evidence of the decays of $Ξ_c(3055)^{+}$ and $Ξ_c(3080)^{+}$ into $ΛD^{+}$. We also perform a combined analysis of the $ΛD^{+}$ with the $Σ_{c}^{++}K^{-}$ and $Σ_{c}^{\ast ++}K^{-}$ decay modes to measure the ratios of branching fractions, masses and widths with improved accuracy. We measure the ratios of branching fractions ${\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3055)^{+} \to ΛD^{+})/{\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3055)^{+} \to Σ_{c}^{++}K^{-})=5.09\pm1.01\pm0.76$, ${\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3080)^{+} \to ΛD^{+})/{\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3080)^{+} \to Σ_{c}^{++}K^{-})=1.29\pm0.30\pm0.15$, and ${\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3080)^{+} \to Σ_{c}^{\ast ++}K^{-})/{\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3080)^{+} \to Σ_{c}^{++}K^{-})=1.07\pm0.27\pm0.01$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The analysis is performed using a 980 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider.

Magnetic shielding and exotic spin-dependent interactions

Experiments searching for exotic spin-dependent interactions typically employ magnetic shielding between the source of the exotic field and the interrogated spins. We explore the question of what effect magnetic shielding has on detectable signals induced by exotic fields. Our general conclusion is that for common experimental geometries and conditions, magnetic shields should not significantly reduce sensitivity to exotic spin-dependent interactions, especially when the technique of comagnetometry is used. However, exotic fields that couple to electron spin can induce magnetic fields in the interior of shields made of a soft ferro- or ferrimagnetic material. This induced magnetic field must be taken into account in the interpretation of experiments searching for new spin-dependent interactions and raises the possibility of using a flux concentrator inside magnetic shields to amplify exotic spin-dependent signals.
