Study of B^{+-} -> K^{+-}(K_S K pi)^0 Decay and Determination of eta_c and eta_c(2S) Parameters

We report the results of a study of $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c$ and $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c(2S)$ decays followed by $η_c$ and $η_c(2S)$ decays to $(K_SKπ)^0$. The results are obtained from a data sample containing 535 million $B\bar{B}$-meson pairs collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure the products of the branching fractions ${\mathcal B}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c){\mathcal B}(η_c\to K_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp})=(26.7\pm 1.4(stat)^{+2.9}_{-2.6}(syst)\pm 4.9(model))\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\mathcal B}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c(2S)){\mathcal B}(η_c(2S)\to K_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp})=(3.4^{+2.2}_{-1.5}(stat+model)^{+0.5}_{-0.4} syst))\times 10^{-6}$. Interference with the non-resonant component leads to significant model uncertainty in the measurement of these product branching fractions. Our analysis accounts for this interference and allows the model uncertainty to be reduced. We also obtain the following charmonia masses and widths: $M(η_c)=(2985.4\pm 1.5(stat)^{+0.5}_{-2.0}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ(η_c)=(35.1\pm 3.1(stat)^{+1.0}_{-1.6}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$, $M(η_c(2S))=(3636.1^{+3.9}_{-4.2}(stat+model)^{+0.7}_{-2.0}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ(η_c(2S))=(6.6^{+8.4}_{-5.1}(stat+model)^{+2.6}_{-0.9}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$.

Strong Response of the very broad h$β$ Emission Line in Luminous Radio-Quite Quasar pg1416-129

We report new spectroscopic observations performed in 2010 and 2011 for luminous radio-quite quasar PG 1416-129. Our new spectra with high quality cover both H$β$ and H$α$ regions, and show negligible line profile variation within a timescale of one year. The two spectra allow us to study the variability of the Balmer line profile by comparing the spectra with the previous ones taken at 10 and 20 years ago. By decomposing the broad Balmer emission lines into two Gaussian profiles, our spectral analysis suggests a strong response to the continuum level for the very broad component, and significant variations in both bulk blueshift velocity/FWHM and flux for the broad component. The new observations additionally indicate flat Balmer decrements (i.e., too strong H$β$ emission) at the line wings, which is hard to be reproduced by recent optically thin models. With these observations we argue that a separate inner optically thin emission-line region might not be necessary in the object to reproduce the observed line profiles.

Search for CP Violation in D Meson Decays to phi pi+

We search for CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed charged D meson decays by measuring the difference between the CP violating asymmetries for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays D+ -> K+K-pi+ and the Cabibbo-favored decays Ds -> K+K-pi+ in the K+K- mass region of the phi resonance. Using 955/fb of data collected with the Belle detector we obtain A_CP(D+ -> phi pi+) = (+0.51 +- 0.28 +- 0.05)%. The measurement improves the sensitivity of previous searches by more than a factor of five. We find no evidence for direct CP violation.

Search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays at Belle

We report on a search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays using a data sample of 699 fb^{-1} collected in the Belle experiment at the KEKB electron-positron asymmetric-energy collider. The CP asymmetry is measured in four bins of the invariant mass of the K^0_S pi system and found to be compatible with zero with a precision of O(10^{-3}) in each mass bin. Limits for the CP violation parameter Im(eta_S) are given at a 90 % confidence level. These limits are |Im(eta_S)|<0.026 or better, depending on the parameterization used to describe the hadronic form factors and improve upon previous limits by one order of magnitude.

Highly anisotropic anomaly in the dispersion of the copper-oxygen bond-bending phonon in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 from inelastic neutron scattering

Motivated by predictions of a substantial contribution of the "buckling" vibration of the CuO2 layers to d-wave superconductivity in the cuprates, we have performed an inelastic neutron scattering study of this phonon in an array of untwinned crystals of YBa2Cu3O7. The data reveal a pronounced softening of the phonon at the in-plane wave vector q = (0, 0.3) upon cooling below ~ 105 K, but no corresponding anomaly at q = (0.3, 0). Based on the observed in-plane anisotropy, we argue that the electron-phonon interaction responsible for this anomaly supports an electronic instability associated with a uniaxial charge-density modulation and does not mediate d-wave superconductivity.

Observation of B- to pbar Lambda D0 at Belle

We study B- meson decays to pbar Lambda D(*)0 final states using a sample of 657 * 10^6 B Bbar events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider. The observed branching fraction for B- to pbar Lambda D0 is (1.43^ +0.28_-0.25 +- 0.18)*10^-5. with a significance of 8.1 standard deviations, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Most of the signal events have the pbarLambda mass peaking near threshold. No significant signal is observed for B- to pbar Lambda D*0 and the corresponding upper limit on the branching fraction is 4.8 * 10^-5 at the 90% confidence level.

Single Spin Asymmetries in Charged Pion Production from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized $^3$He Target

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive $^3{He}(e,e'π^\pm)X$ reaction on a transversely polarized target. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.9 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 0.14 $< x <$ 0.34 with 1.3 $<Q^2<$ 2.7 GeV$^2$. The Collins and Sivers moments were extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the measured asymmetries. The extracted $π^\pm$ Collins moments for $^3$He are consistent with zero, except for the $π^+$ moment at $x=0.34$, which deviates from zero by 2.3$σ$. While the $π^-$ Sivers moments are consistent with zero, the $π^+$ Sivers moments favor negative values. The neutron results were extracted using the nucleon effective polarization and the measured cross section ratio of proton to $^3$He, and are largely consistent with the predictions of phenomenological fits and quark model calculations.

Nuclear transparency and effective kaon-nucleon cross section from the A(e, e'K+) reaction

We have determined the transparency of the nuclear medium to kaons from $A(e,e^{'} K^{+})$ measurements on $^{12}$C, $^{63}$Cu, and $^{197}$Au targets. The measurements were performed at the Jefferson Laboratory and span a range in four-momentum-transfer squared Q$^2$=1.1 -- 3.0 GeV$^2$. The nuclear transparency was defined as the ratio of measured kaon electroproduction cross sections with respect to deuterium, ($σ^{A}/σ^{D}$). We further extracted the atomic number ($A$) dependence of the transparency as parametrized by $T= (A/2)^{α-1}$ and, within a simple model assumption, the in-medium effective kaon-nucleon cross sections. The effective cross sections extracted from the electroproduction data are found to be smaller than the free cross sections determined from kaon-nucleon scattering experiments, and the parameter $α$ was found to be significantly larger than those obtained from kaon-nucleus scattering. We have included similar comparisons between pion- and proton-nucleon effective cross sections as determined from electron scattering experiments, and pion-nucleus and proton-nucleus scattering data.

Characteristics of convection and overshooting in RGB and AGB stars

Based on the turbulent convection model (TCM) of Li & Yang (2007), we have studied the characteristics of turbulent convection in the envelopes of 2 and 5M stars at the RGB and AGB phases. The TCM has been applied successfully in the whole convective envelopes including the convective unstable zone and the overshooting regions. We find that the convective motions become stronger and stronger when the stellar models are located upper and upper along the Hayashi line. In the convective unstable zone, we find that the turbulent correlations are proportional to functions of a common factor $(\nabla-\nabla_{ad})\bar{T}$, which explains similar distributions of those correlations. For the TCM we find that if the obtained stellar structure of temperature is close to that of the MLT, the convective motion will be at a much larger velocity and thus more violent. However, if the turbulent velocity is adjusted to close to that of the MLT, the superadiabatic convection zone is much more extended inward and a lower effective temperature of the stellar model will be obtained. For the overshooting distance we find that the e-folding lengths of the turbulent kinetic energy k in both the top and bottom overshooting regions decrease as the stellar model is located up along the Hayashi line, but both the extents of the decrease are not obvious. And the overshooting distances of the turbulent correlation $\bar{u_{r}^{'}T^{'}}$ are almost the same for the different stellar models with a same set of TCM's parameters. ...

Observation of transverse polarization asymmetries of charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation near sqrt s=10.58 GeV

The interference fragmentation function translates the fragmentation of a quark with a transverse projection of the spin into an azimuthal asymmetry of two final-state hadrons. In e+e- annihilation the product of two interference fragmentation functions is measured. We report nonzero asymmetries for pairs of charge-ordered pi+pi- pairs, which indicate a significant interference fragmentation function in this channel. The results are obtained from a 672 fb-1 data sample that contains 711 \times 106 pi+pi- pairs and was collected at and near the ?(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Detecting the Amplitude Mode of Strongly Interacting Lattice Bosons by Bragg Scattering

We report the first detection of the Higgs-type amplitude mode using Bragg spectroscopy in a strongly interacting condensate of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. By the comparison of our experimental data with a spatially resolved, time-dependent dynamic Gutzwiller calculation, we obtain good quantitative agreement. This allows for a clear identification of the amplitude mode, showing that it can be detected with full momentum resolution by going beyond the linear response regime. A systematic shift of the sound and amplitude modes' resonance frequencies due to the finite Bragg beam intensity is observed.

Pentagonal puckering in a sheet of amorphous graphene

Ordered graphene has been extensively studied. In this paper we undertake a first density functional study of it topologically disordered analogues of graphene, in the form of a random network, consisting predominantly of hexagonal rings, but also including pentagons and heptagons. After some preliminaries with crystalline material, we relax various random network models and find that the presence of carbon pentagons induce local curvature, thus breaking the initial planar symmetry, in some analogy with the case of fullerenes. Using density functional theory to calculate the total energy, we find that while the planar state is locally stable, there is a puckered state that has lower energy. The scale of the puckering is consistent with that expected with local maxima and minima associated with pentagons surrounded by larger rings; forming local "buckyball domes".

Spectroscopic and Photometric Observations of Unidentified Ultraviolate Variable Objects in GUVV-2 Catalog

An NUV-optical diagram made for sources from the secend Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Ultraviolet Variability (GUVV-2) Catalog provide us a method to tentatively classify the unknown GUVV2 sources by their NUV-optical magnitudes. On the purpose of testing the correctness and generality of the method, we carry out a program on the spectroscopic observations of the unidentified GUVV2 sources. The spectroscopic identification for these 37 sources are 19 type -A to -F stars, 10 type -G to -K stars and 7 M dwarf stars together with an AGN. We also present the light curves in R-band for two RR Lyrae star candidates selected from the NUV-optical diagram, both of which perform cyclic variations. Combining there light curves and colors, we classify them as RR Lyrae stars. To confirm the results, we shows a color-color diagram for the 37 newly spectroscopically identified objects compared with the previously identified ones, which manifests good consistence with our former results, indicating that the ultroviolet variable sources can be initially classified by their NUV/optical color-color diagram.

Search for effects beyond the Born approximation in polarization transfer observables in $\vec{e}p$ elastic scattering

Intensive theoretical and experimental efforts over the past decade have aimed at explaining the discrepancy between data for the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio, $G_{E}/G_{M}$, obtained separately from cross section and polarization transfer measurements. One possible explanation for this difference is a two-photon-exchange (TPEX) contribution. In an effort to search for effects beyond the one-photon-exchange or Born approximation, we report measurements of polarization transfer observables in the elastic $H(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})$ reaction for three different beam energies at a fixed squared momentum transfer $Q^2 = 2.5$ GeV$^2$, spanning a wide range of the virtual photon polarization parameter, $ε$. From these measured polarization observables, we have obtained separately the ratio $R$, which equals $μ_p G_{E}/G_{M}$ in the Born approximation, and the longitudinal polarization transfer component $P_\ell$, with statistical and systematic uncertainties of $ΔR \approx \pm 0.01 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.013 \mbox{(syst)}$ and $ΔP_\ell/P^{Born}_{\ell} \approx \pm 0.006 \mbox{(stat)}\pm 0.01 \mbox{(syst)}$. The ratio $R$ is found to be independent of $ε$ at the 1.5% level, while the $ε$ dependence of $P_\ell$ shows an enhancement of $(2.3 \pm 0.6) %$ relative to the Born approximation at large $ε$.

Measurement of the decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ and determination of $|V_{ub}|$

We present a measurement of the charmless semileptonic decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ using a data sample containing 657$\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider operating near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We determine the total branching fraction of the decay, $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν)=(1.49\pm 0.04{(\mathrm{stat})}\pm 0.07{(\mathrm{syst})})\times 10^{-4}$. We also report a new precise measurement of the differential decay rate, and extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ using model-independent and -dependent approaches. From a simultaneous fit to the measured differential decay rate and lattice QCD results, we obtain $|V_{ub}|=(3.43\pm 0.33)\times 10^{-3}$, where the error includes both statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Different Patterns of Chromospheric Evaporation in a Flaring Region Observed with Hinode/EIS

We investigate the chromospheric evaporation in the flare of 2007 January 16 using line profiles observed by the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode. Three points at flare ribbons of different magnetic polarities are analyzed in detail. We find that the three points show different patterns of upflows and downflows in the impulsive phase of the flare. The spectral lines at the first point are mostly blue shifted, with the hotter lines showing a dominant blue-shifted component over the stationary one. At the second point, however, only weak upflows are detected; in stead, notable downflows appear at high temperatures (up to 2.5-5.0 MK). The third point is similar to the second one only that it shows evidence of multi-component downflows. While the evaporated plasma falling back down as warm rain is a possible cause of the redshifts at points 2 and 3, the different patterns of chromospheric evaporation at the three points imply existence of different heating mechanisms in the flaring active region.

Recoil Polarization Measurements of the Proton Electromagnetic Form Factor Ratio to Q^2 = 8.5 GeV^2

Among the most fundamental observables of nucleon structure, electromagnetic form factors are a crucial benchmark for modern calculations describing the strong interaction dynamics of the nucleon's quark constituents; indeed, recent proton data have attracted intense theoretical interest. In this letter, we report new measurements of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio using the recoil polarization method, at momentum transfers Q2=5.2, 6.7, and 8.5 GeV2. By extending the range of Q2 for which GEp is accurately determined by more than 50%, these measurements will provide significant constraints on models of nucleon structure in the non-perturbative regime.

High purity TeO2 crystals are produced to be used for the search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Dedicated production lines for raw material synthesis, crystal growth and surface processing were built compliant with radio-purity constraints specific to rare event physics experiments. High sensitivity measurements of radio-isotope concentrations in raw materials, reactants, consumables, ancillaries and intermediary products used for TeO2 crystals production are reported. Production and certification protocols are presented and resulting ready-to-use TeO2 crystals are described.
