Soft X-ray prompt emission from a high-redshift gamma-ray burst EP240315a

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs.

Measurement of double-differential cross sections for mesonless charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with final-state protons using the MicroBooNE detector

Charged-current neutrino interactions with final states containing zero mesons and at least one proton are of high interest for current and future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, we have obtained the first double-differential cross section measurements of this channel for muon neutrino scattering on an argon target with a proton momentum threshold of 0.25 GeV/c. We also report a flux-averaged total cross section of $σ= (11.8 \pm 1.2) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ / Ar and several single-differential measurements which extend and improve upon previous results. Statistical and systematic uncertainties are quantified with a full treatment of correlations across 359 kinematic bins, including correlations between distributions describing different observables. The resulting data set provides the most detailed information obtained to date for testing models of mesonless neutrino-argon scattering.

A Configurable Ultra-Low Noise Current Source for Transition-Edge Sensor Characterization

Transition-edge sensors (TESs) are sensitive devices for detecting photons from millimeter radiation to gamma rays. Their photon counting efficiency and collecting area benefit from large-array multiplexing scheme, and therefore the development of multiplexing readout system has been an important topic in this field. Among the many multiplex techniques, time-division multiplexing (TDM) superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) has been used most widely for TES readout. In this work, we design a Configurable Ultra-Low Noise Current Source (CLCS) for TES characterization and as a part of a whole TDM-TES bias control system. The CLCS is based on the feedback structure of ultra-low noise instrumentation amplifiers and low-noise, high-resolution (20 bits) digital-to-analog converter (DAC). CLCS has an ultra-high resolution of 10 nA in the 0 to 5 mA current output range, and can perform current-voltage (IV) sweep and bias-step tests to measure key TES parameters on board. The feedback structure of the CLCS also avoids the issue of impedance mismatch.

Euclid: The search for primordial features

Primordial features, in particular oscillatory signals, imprinted in the primordial power spectrum of density perturbations represent a clear window of opportunity for detecting new physics at high-energy scales. Future spectroscopic and photometric measurements from the $Euclid$ space mission will provide unique constraints on the primordial power spectrum, thanks to the redshift coverage and high-accuracy measurement of nonlinear scales, thus allowing us to investigate deviations from the standard power-law primordial power spectrum. We consider two models with primordial undamped oscillations superimposed on the matter power spectrum, one linearly spaced in $k$-space the other logarithmically spaced in $k$-space. We forecast uncertainties applying a Fisher matrix method to spectroscopic galaxy clustering, weak lensing, photometric galaxy clustering, cross correlation between photometric probes, spectroscopic galaxy clustering bispectrum, CMB temperature and $E$-mode polarization, temperature-polarization cross correlation, and CMB weak lensing. We also study a nonlinear density reconstruction method to retrieve the oscillatory signals in the primordial power spectrum. We find the following percentage relative errors in the feature amplitude with $Euclid$ primary probes for the linear (logarithmic) feature model: 21% (22%) in the pessimistic settings and 18% (18%) in the optimistic settings at 68.3% confidence level (CL) using GC$_{\rm sp}$+WL+GC$_{\rm ph}$+XC. Combining all the sources of information explored expected from $Euclid$ in combination with future SO-like CMB experiment, we forecast ${\cal A}_{\rm lin} \simeq 0.010 \pm 0.001$ at 68.3% CL and ${\cal A}_{\rm log} \simeq 0.010 \pm 0.001$ for GC$_{\rm sp}$(PS rec + BS)+WL+GC$_{\rm ph}$+XC+SO-like both for the optimistic and pessimistic settings over the frequency range $(1,\,10^{2.1})$.

Expanding the frontiers of cool-dwarf asteroseismology with ESPRESSO. Detection of solar-like oscillations in the K5 dwarf $ε$ Indi

Fuelled by space photometry, asteroseismology is vastly benefitting the study of cool main-sequence stars, which exhibit convection-driven solar-like oscillations. Even so, the tiny oscillation amplitudes in K dwarfs continue to pose a challenge to space-based asteroseismology. A viable alternative is offered by the lower stellar noise over the oscillation timescales in Doppler observations. In this letter we present the definite detection of solar-like oscillations in the bright K5 dwarf $ε$ Indi based on time-intensive observations collected with the ESPRESSO spectrograph at the VLT, thus making it the coolest seismic dwarf ever observed. We measured the frequencies of a total of 19 modes of degree $\ell=0$--2 along with $ν_{\rm max}=5305\pm176\:{\rm μHz}$ and $Δν=201.25\pm0.16\:{\rm μHz}$. The peak amplitude of radial modes is $2.6\pm0.5\:{\rm cm\,s^{-1}}$, or a mere ${\sim} 14\%$ of the solar value. Measured mode amplitudes are ${\sim} 2$ times lower than predicted from a nominal $L/M$ scaling relation and favour a scaling closer to $(L/M)^{1.5}$ below ${\sim} 5500\:{\rm K}$, carrying important implications for our understanding of the coupling efficiency between pulsations and near-surface convection in K dwarfs. This detection conclusively shows that precise asteroseismology of cool dwarfs is possible down to at least the mid-K regime using next-generation spectrographs on large-aperture telescopes, effectively opening up a new domain in observational asteroseismology.

Measurement of ambient radon progeny decay rates and energy spectra in liquid argon using the MicroBooNE detector

We report measurements of radon progeny in liquid argon within the MicroBooNE time projection chamber (LArTPC). The presence of specific radon daughters in MicroBooNE's 85 metric tons of active liquid argon bulk is probed with newly developed charge-based low-energy reconstruction tools and analysis techniques to detect correlated $^{214}$Bi-$^{214}$Po radioactive decays. Special datasets taken during periods of active radon doping enable new demonstrations of the calorimetric capabilities of single-phase neutrino LArTPCs for $β$ and $α$ particles with electron-equivalent energies ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 MeV. By applying $^{214}$Bi-$^{214}$Po detection algorithms to data recorded over a 46-day period, no statistically significant presence of radioactive $^{214}$Bi is detected, and a limit on the activity is placed at $<0.35$ mBq/kg at the 95% confidence level. This bulk $^{214}$Bi radiopurity limit -- the first ever reported for a liquid argon detector incorporating liquid-phase purification -- is then further discussed in relation to the targeted upper limit of 1 mBq/kg on bulk $^{222}$Rn activity for the DUNE neutrino detector.

Search for baryon and lepton number violating decays $\boldsymbol{D \rightarrow p\ell}$

We search for the baryon and lepton number violating charm decays, $D \rightarrow p\ell$, where $D$ is either a $D^0$ or a $\overline{D}^0$ and $\ell$ is a muon or an electron, using a data sample of $921\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. In the absence of significant signals, we set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range $(5 - 8) \times 10^{-7}$ at a 90\% confidence level, depending on the decay mode.

Rubidium and cesium ion-induced electron and ion signals for scanning ion microscopy applications

Scanning ion microscopy applications of novel focused ion beam (FIB) systems based on ultracold rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs) atoms were investigated via ion-induced electron and ion yields. Results measured on the Rb$^+$ and Cs$^+$ FIB systems were compared with results from commercially available gallium (Ga$^+$) systems to verify the merits of applying Rb$^+$ and Cs$^+$ for imaging. The comparison shows that Rb$^+$ and Cs$^+$ have higher secondary electron (SE) yields on a variety of pure element targets than Ga$^+$, which implies a higher signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved for the same dose in SE imaging using Rb$^+$/Cs$^+$ than Ga$^+$. In addition, analysis of the ion-induced ion signals reveals that secondary ions dominate Cs$^+$ induced ion signals while the Rb$^+$/Ga$^+$ induced signals contain more backscattered ions.

Nuclear magnetic resonance studies in a model transverse field Ising system

The suppression of ferroquadrupolar order in TmVO$_4$ in a magnetic field is well-described by the transverse field Ising model, enabling detailed studies of critical dynamics near the quantum phase transition. We describe nuclear magnetic resonance measurements in pure and Y-doped single crystals. The non-Kramers nature of the ground state doublet leads to a unique form of the hyperfine coupling that exclusively probes the transverse field susceptibility. Our results show that this quantity diverges at the critical field, in contrast to the mean-field prediction. Furthermore, we find evidence for quantum critical fluctuations present near Tm-rich regions in Y-doped crystals at levels beyond which long-range order is suppressed, suggesting the presence of quantum Griffiths phases.

Semi-Classical Electrodynamics and the Casimir Effect

From the late 1960s and onwards the groups of Barry Ninham and Adrian Parsegian, and their many collaborators, made a number of important contributions to theory and experiment of intermolecular forces. In particular, they explored the semi-classical theory: Maxwell's equations and Planck quantization of light $\rightarrow$ Lifshitz and Casimir interactions. We discuss some selected thought-provoking results from Ninham and his group. Some of the results have been conceived as controversial but, we dare, say never uninteresting.

Axion Electrodynamics and the Casimir Effect

We present a concise review of selected parts of axion electrodynamics and its application to Casimir physics. We present the general formalism including the boundary conditions at a dielectric surface, derive the dispersion relation in the case where the axion parameter has a constant spatial derivative in the direction normal to the conducting plates, and calculate the Casimir energy for the simple case of scalar electrodynamics using dimensional regularization.

Search for a dark leptophilic scalar produced in association with $τ^+τ^-$ pair in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at center-of-mass energies near 10.58 GeV

A dark leptophilic scalar $(ϕ_L)$ is a hypothetical particle that couples only to leptons rather than quarks. We report on a search for $ϕ_L$ in the $e^+e^- \to τ^+ τ^- ϕ_L, ~ϕ_L \to \ell^+ \ell^- ~(\ell = e, μ)$ process using 626~\invfb of data collected by the Belle experiment near the \Y4S resonance. We validate the backgrounds with multiple control regions in data, using a novel multiclass multivariate event classifier. In absence of a signal, we quote upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on the coupling between $ϕ_L$ and leptons. Our bounds, obtained in a blinded approach, are 19\% more constraining than the previous limits, averaged over the mass range $0.04 \leq m_{ϕ_L} \leq 6.5~\gev$. We exclude the parameter space below 4~\gev favored by measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

ForMAX -- a beamline for multiscale and multimodal structural characterization of hierarchical materials

The ForMAX beamline at the MAX IV Laboratory provides multiscale and multimodal structural characterization of hierarchical materials in the nm to mm range by combining small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering with full-field microtomography. The modular design of the beamline is optimized for easy switching between different experimental modalities. The beamline has a special focus on the development of novel, fibrous materials from forest resources, but it is also well suited for studies within, e.g., food science and biomedical research.

Search for heavy neutral leptons in electron-positron and neutral-pion final states with the MicroBooNE detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNL) decaying into $νe^+e^-$ or $νπ^0$ final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's Main Injector corresponding to a total exposure of $7.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. We set upper limits at the $90\%$ confidence level on the mixing parameter $\lvert U_{μ4}\rvert^2$ in the mass ranges $10\le m_{\rm HNL}\le 150$ MeV for the $νe^+e^-$ channel and $150\le m_{\rm HNL}\le 245$ MeV for the $νπ^0$ channel, assuming $\lvert U_{e 4}\rvert^2 = \lvert U_{τ4}\rvert^2 = 0$. These limits represent the most stringent constraints in the mass range $35<m_{\rm HNL}<175$ MeV and the first constraints from a direct search for $νπ^0$ decays.

Measurements of the branching fraction, polarization, and $CP$ asymmetry for the decay $B^0\rightarrow ωω$

We present a measurement of $B^{0} \rightarrow ωω$, a charmless decay into two vector mesons, using 772 $\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The decay is observed with a significance of 7.9 standard deviations. We measure a branching fraction $\mathcal{B} = (1.53 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-6}$, a fraction of longitudinal polarization $f_L = 0.87 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.13$, and a time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry $A_{CP}$ = $-0.44 \pm 0.43 \pm 0.11$, where the first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first observation of $B^{0} \rightarrow ωω$, and the first measurements of $f_L$ and $A_{CP}$ for this decay.

Efficient InGaN-based Red Light-Emitting Diodes by Modulating Trench Defects

Trench defects in multi-quantum wells (MQWs) have been considered as flawed structures that severely degrade the internal quantum efficiency of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the past. In this research, trench defects are innovatively modulated into the structure to enhance the efficiency of red InGaN LEDs. Specifically, dual-color MQWs structures are grown with green MQWs at the bottom and red MQWs at the top. When high-density trench defects are introduced into the green MQWs, the upper red MQWs exhibit a significant wavelength redshift of 68 nm and approximately 6-fold luminescence enhancement compared to those without trench defects. The wavelength redshift is attributed to the increased indium incorporation due to the strain relaxation effect of trench defects. Moreover, the luminescence enhancement originates from the strong emission of the red MQWs inside trench defects. The mechanisms behind the superior luminescent properties of red MQWs within trench defects are explored in detail. Red InGaN LEDs with an internal quantum efficiency of 16.4% are achieved by modulating the trench defects. The method of achieving InGaN-based red emission by introducing trench defects is simple and reproducible, requiring no additional substrate designs. This research provides a novel pathway toward achieving high-efficiency red InGaN LEDs.

Controlling charge density order in 2H-TaSe$_{2}$ using a van Hove singularity

We report on the interplay between a van Hove singularity and a charge density wave state in 2H-TaSe$_{2}$. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate changes in the Fermi surface of this material under surface doping with potassium. At high doping, we observe modifications which imply the disappearance of the $(3\times 3)$ charge density wave and formation of a different correlated state. Using a tight-binding-based approach as well as an effective model, we explain our observations as a consequence of coupling between the single-particle Lifshitz transition during which the Fermi level passes a van Hove singularity and the charge density order. In this scenario, the high electronic density of states associated with the van Hove singularity induces a change in the periodicity of the charge density wave from the known $(3\times 3)$ to a new $(2\times 2)$ superlattice.

Search for the semileptonic decays $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ at Belle

Using the full data sample of 980 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider, we report the results of the first search for the rare semileptonic decays $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell=e$ or $μ)$. No significant signals are observed in the $Ξ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ invariant-mass distributions. Taking the decay $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+$ as the normalization mode, we report 90\% credibility upper limits on the branching fraction ratios ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 e^+ e^-) / {\cal{B}}(Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+) < 6.7 \times 10^{-3}$ and ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 μ^+ μ^-) / {\cal{B}}(Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+) < 4.3 \times 10^{-3}$ based on the phase-space assumption for signal decays. The 90\% credibility upper limits on the absolute branching fractions of ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 e^+ e^-)$ and ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 μ^+ μ^-)$ are found to be $9.9 \times 10^{-5}$ and $6.5 \times 10^{-5}$, respectively.
