Measurement of the Lepton Forward-Backward Asymmetry in $B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ Decays with a Sum of Exclusive Modes

We report the first measurement of the lepton forward-backward asymmetry ${\cal A}_{\rm FB}$ as a function of the squared four-momentum of the dilepton system, $q^2$, for the electroweak penguin process $B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ with a sum of exclusive final states, where $\ell$ is an electron or a muon and $X_s$ is a hadronic recoil system with an $s$ quark. The results are based on a data sample containing $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. ${\cal A}_{\rm FB}$ for the inclusive $B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ is extrapolated from the sum of 10 exclusive $X_s$ states whose invariant mass is less than 2 GeV/$c^2$. For $q^2 > 10.2$ GeV$^2$/$c^2$, ${\cal A}_{\rm FB} < 0$ is excluded at the 2.3$σ$ level, where $σ$ is the standard deviation. For $q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$/$c^2$, the result is within 1.8$σ$ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation.

Current Status and Future Prospects of the SNO+ Experiment

SNO+ is a large liquid scintillator-based experiment located 2km underground at SNOLAB, Sudbury, Canada. It reuses the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory detector, consisting of a 12m diameter acrylic vessel which will be filled with about 780 tonnes of ultra-pure liquid scintillator. Designed as a multipurpose neutrino experiment, the primary goal of SNO+ is a search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0$νββ$) of 130Te. In Phase I, the detector will be loaded with 0.3% natural tellurium, corresponding to nearly 800 kg of 130Te, with an expected effective Majorana neutrino mass sensitivity in the region of 55-133 meV, just above the inverted mass hierarchy. Recently, the possibility of deploying up to ten times more natural tellurium has been investigated, which would enable SNO+ to achieve sensitivity deep into the parameter space for the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy in the future. Additionally, SNO+ aims to measure reactor antineutrino oscillations, low-energy solar neutrinos, and geoneutrinos, to be sensitive to supernova neutrinos, and to search for exotic physics. A first phase with the detector filled with water will begin soon, with the scintillator phase expected to start after a few months of water data taking. The 0$νββ$ Phase I is foreseen for 2017.

Measurement of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ in fully reconstructed events and determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$

We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ using the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ ($\ell=e,μ$) based on 711 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-\to Υ(4S)$ data recorded by the Belle detector and containing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs. One $B$ meson in the event is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode while the other, on the signal side, is partially reconstructed from a charged lepton and either a $D^+$ or $D^0$ meson in a total of 23 hadronic decay modes. The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ is found to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^- \ell^+ ν_{\ell})=(2.31\pm 0.03(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.11(\mathrm{syst}))\%$. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of the hadronic recoil with the parameterization of Caprini, Lelouch and Neubert and using the form-factor prediction $\mathcal{G}(1)=1.0541\pm 0.0083$ calculated by FNAL/MILC, we obtain $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(40.12\pm 1.34)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_\mathrm{EW}$ is the electroweak correction factor. Alternatively, assuming the model-independent form-factor parameterization of Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed and using lattice QCD data from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations, we find $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(41.10 \pm 1.14)\times 10^{-3}$.

Effect of impurity scattering on superconductivity in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$

Impurity scattering in a superconductor may serve as an important probe for the nature of superconducting pairing state. Here we report the impurity effect on superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$ in the newly discovered Cr-based superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. The resistivity measurements show that the crystals prepared using high-purity Cr metal ($\geq$99.99\%) have an electron mean free path much larger than the superconducting coherence length. For the crystals prepared using impure Cr that contains various \emph{nonmagnetic} impurities, however, the $T_\mathrm{c}$ decreases significantly, in accordance with the generalized Abrikosov-Gor'kov pair-breaking theory. This finding supports a non-$s$-wave superconductivity in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$.

First-order superfluid to Mott-insulator phase transitions in spinor condensates

We observe evidence of first-order superfluid to Mott-insulator quantum phase transitions in a lattice-confined antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. The observed signatures include hysteresis effect and significant heatings across the phase transitions. The nature of the phase transitions is found to strongly depend on the ratio of the quadratic Zeeman energy to the spin-dependent interaction. Our observations are qualitatively understood by the mean field theory, and in addition suggest tuning the quadratic Zeeman energy is a new approach to realize superfluid to Mott-insulator phase transitions.

Inclusive cross sections for pairs of identified light charged hadrons and for single protons in $e^+e^-$ at $\sqrt{s}=$ 10.58 GeV

We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons ($e^+e^- \rightarrow hhX$) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a $655\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton ($e^+e^- \rightarrow pX$) cross sections are extracted from a $159\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sub-sample.

Strain-controlled switch between ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism in 1T-CrX2 (X = Se, Te) monolayers

We report on the strain-induced switch between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) orderings in 1T-CrX2 (X = Se, Te) monolayers based on the first-principles calculations. The CrSe2 and CrTe2 monolayers without strains are found to be AFM and FM, respectively. Under the biaxial tensile strain, the CrSe2 monolayer tends to be FM when the strain is larger than 2%. The FM state is further stabilized when the strain is increased. Moreover, the CrSe2 monolayer changes to be half-metallic when the tensile strain is larger than 10%. While for the CrTe2 monolayer, the critical strain at which the transition between the FM and AFM states occurs is compressive, of -1%. Relatively small tensile strains of 4% and 2%, respectively, can enhance the Curie temperature of CrSe2 and CrTe2 monolayers above the room temperature. The strain-induced switch between the FM and AFM states in CrSe2 (CrTe2) monolayer can be understood by the competition between the AFM Cr-Cr direct exchange and FM Cr-Se(Te)-Cr superexchange interactions. The tunable and attractive magnetic and electronic properties controlled by the flexible strain are desirable for the future nanoelectronic applications.

Aging effect in the BESIII drift chamber

As the main tracking detector of BESIII, the drift chamber works for accurate measurements of the tracking and the momentum of the charged particles decayed from the reaction of BEPCII e+ and e-. After operation six years, the drift chamber is suffering from aging problems due to huge beam related background. The gains of the cells in the first ten layers experience an obvious decrease, reaching a maximum of about 29% for the first layer cells. Two calculation methods for the gains change (Bhabha events and accumulated charges with 0.3% aging ratio for inner chamber cells) get almost the same results. For the Malter effect encountered by the inner drift chamber in Jan., 2012, about 0.2% water vapor was added to MDC gas mixture to solve this cathode aging problem. These results provide an important reference for MDC operation high voltage setting and the upgrade of the inner drift chamber.

Integrated tuning fork nanocavity optomechanical transducers with high $f_{M}Q_{M}$ product and stress-engineered frequency tuning

Cavity optomechanical systems are being widely developed for precision force and displacement measurements. For nanomechanical transducers, there is usually a trade-off between the frequency ($f_{M}$) and quality factor ($Q_{M}$), which limits temporal resolution and sensitivity. Here, we present a monolithic cavity optomechanical transducer supporting both high $f_{M}$ and high $Q_{M}$. By replacing the common doubly-clamped, Si$_3$N$_4$ nanobeam with a tuning fork geometry, we demonstrate devices with the fundamental $f_{M}\approx29$ MHz and $Q_{M}\approx2.2$$\times10^5$, corresponding to an $f_{M}Q_{M}$ product of 6.35$\times10^{12}$ Hz, comparable to the highest values previously demonstrated for room temperature operation. This high $f_{M}Q_{M}$ product is partly achieved by engineering the stress of the tuning fork to be 3 times the residual film stress through clamp design, which results in an increase of $f_{M}$ up to 1.5 times. Simulations reveal that the tuning fork design simultaneously reduces the clamping, thermoelastic dissipation, and intrinsic material damping contributions to mechanical loss. This work may find application when both high temporal and force resolution are important, such as in compact sensors for atomic force microscopy.

A homogeneous analysis of disks around brown dwarfs

We re-analyzed the Herschel/PACS data of a sample of 55 brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low mass stars with spectral types ranging from M5.5 to L0. We investigated the dependence of disk structure on the mass of the central object in the substellar regime based on a homogeneous analysis of Herschel data from flux density measurements to spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling. A systematic comparison between the derived disk properties and those of sun-like stars shows that the disk flaring of BDs and very low mass stars is generally smaller than that of their higher mass counterparts, the disk mass is orders of magnitude lower than the typical value found in T Tauri stars, and the disk scale heights are comparable in both sun-like stars and BDs. We further divided our sample into an early-type brown dwarf (ETBD) group and a late-type brown dwarf (LTBD) group by using spectral type (=M8) as the border criterion. We systematically compared the modeling results from Bayesian analysis between these two groups, and found the trends of flaring index as a function of spectral type also present in the substellar regime. The spectral type independence of the scale height is also seen between high-mass and very low-mass BDs. However, both the ETBD and LTBD groups feature a similar median disk mass of 10^{-5}Msun and no clear trend is visible in the distribution, probably due to the uncertainty in translating the far-IR photometry into disk mass, the detection bias and the age difference among the sample. Unlike previous studies, our analysis is completely homogeneous in Herschel/PACS data reduction and modeling with a statistically significant sample. Therefore, we present evidence of stellar-mass-dependent disk structure down to the substellar mass regime, which is important for planet formation models. (Abridged Version)

Fast magnetic field annihilation in the relativistic collisionless regime driven by two ultra-short high-intensity laser pulses

The magnetic quadrupole structure formation during the interaction of two ultra-short high power laser pulses with a collisionless plasma is demonstrated with 2.5-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The subsequent expansion of the quadrupole is accompanied by magnetic field annihilation in the ultrarelativistic regime, when the magnetic field can not be sustained by the plasma current. This results in a dominant contribution of the displacement current exciting a strong large scale electric field. This field leads to the conversion of magnetic energy into kinetic energy of accelerated electrons inside the thin current sheet.

On the origin of multi-component bulk metallic glasses: Atomic size mismatches and de-mixing

The critical cooling rate $\mathcal{R}_c$, below which liquids crystallize upon cooling, characterizes the glass-forming ability (GFA) of the system. While pure metals are typically poor glass formers with $\mathcal {R}_c>10^{12}\, {\rm K/s}$, specific multi-component alloys can form bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) even at cooling rates below $\mathcal {R}\sim 1\, {\rm K/s}$. Conventional wisdom asserts that metal alloys with three or more components are better glass formers (with smaller ${\cal R}_c$) than binary alloys. However, there is currently no theoretical framework that provides quantitative predictions for $\mathcal{R}_c$ for multi-component alloys. We perform simulations of ternary hard-sphere systems, which have been shown to be accurate models for the glass-forming ability of BMGs, to understand the roles of geometric frustration and demixing in determining $\mathcal {R}_c$. Specifically, we compress ternary hard sphere mixtures into jammed packings and measure the critical compression rate, below which the system crystallizes, as a function of the diameter ratios $σ_B/σ_A$ and $σ_C/σ_A$ and number fractions $x_A$, $x_B$, and $x_C$. We find two distinct regimes for the GFA in parameter space for ternary hard spheres. When the diameter ratios are close to $1$, such that the largest ($A$) and smallest ($C$) species are well-mixed, the GFA of ternary systems is no better than that of the optimal binary glass former. However, when $σ_C/σ_A \lesssim 0.8$ is below the demixing threshold for binary systems, adding a third component $B$ with $σ_C < σ_B < σ_A$ increases the GFA of the system by preventing demixing of $A$ and $C$. Analysis of the available data from experimental studies indicates that most ternary BMGs are below the binary demixing threshold with $σ_C/σ_A < 0.8$.

Ultrafast transmission electron microscopy on dynamic process of a CDW transition in 1T-TaSe2

Four-dimensional ultrafast transmission electron microscopy (4D-UTEM) measurements reveal a rich variety of structural dynamic phenomena at a phase transition in the charge-density-wave (CDW) 1T-TaSe2. Through the photoexcitation, remarkable changes on both the CDW intensity and orientation are clearly observed associated with the transformation from a commensurate (C) into an incommensurate (IC) phase in a time-scale of about 3 ps. Moreover, the transient states show up a notable "structurally isosbestic point" at a wave vector of qiso where the C and IC phases yield their diffracting efficiencies in an equally ratio. This fact demonstrates that the crystal planes parallel to qiso adopts visibly common structural features in these two CDW phases. The second-order characters observed in this nonequilibrium phase transition have been also analyzed based on the time-resolved structural data.

Disorder suppressed charge-density-wave and its origin in 1T-TaSe2-xTex

In the sake of connecting the charge-density-wave (CDW) of TaSe$_2$ and single-\emph{\textbf{q}} CDW-type distortion of TaTe$_2$, we present an overall electronic phase diagram of 1\emph{T}-TaSe$_{2-x}$Te$_x$ ($0 \leq x \leq 2$). In the experimentally prepared single crystals, the CDW is completely suppressed as $0.5 < x < 1.5$, while superconductivity emerges as $0.2 < x < 1.2$. Theoretically, similar to 1\emph{T}-TaSe$_2$ and 1\emph{T}-TaTe$_2$, the hypothetic 1\emph{T}-TaSeTe with ordered Se/Ta/Te stacking shows instability in the phonon dispersion, indicating the presence of CDW in the ideally ordered sample. The contradictory between experimental and theoretical results suggests that the CDW is suppressed by disorder in 1\emph{T}-TaSe$_{2-x}$Te$_x$. The formation and suppression of CDW are found to be independent with Fermi surface nesting based on the generated electron susceptibility calculations. The calculation of phonon linewidth suggests the strong \textbf{\emph{q}}-dependent electron-phonon coupling induced period-lattice-distortion (PLD) should be related to our observation: The doping can largely distort the TaX$_6$ (X = Se, Te) octahedra, which are disorderly distributed. The resulted puckered Ta-Ta layers are not compatible with the two-dimensional PLD. Therefore, CDW is suppressed in 1\emph{T}-TaSe$_{2-x}$Te$_x$. Our results offer an indirect evidence that PLD, which can be influenced by strong disorder, is the origin of CDW in the system.

Structure and Control of Charge Density Waves in Two-Dimensional 1T-TaS2

The layered transition metal dichalcogenides host a rich collection of charge density wave (CDW) phases in which both the conduction electrons and the atomic structure display translational symmetry breaking. Manipulating these complex states by purely electronic methods has been a long-sought scientific and technological goal. Here, we show how this can be achieved in 1T-TaS2 in the two-dimensional (2D) limit. We first demonstrate that the intrinsic properties of atomically-thin flakes are preserved by encapsulation with hexagonal boron nitride in inert atmosphere. We use this facile assembly method together with TEM and transport measurements to probe the nature of the 2D state and show that its conductance is dominated by discommensurations. The discommensuration structure can be precisely tuned in few-layer samples by an in-plane electric current, allowing continuous electrical control over the discommensuration-melting transition in 2D.

Search for $B^+ \to e^+ ν$ and $B^+ \to μ^+ ν$ decays using hadronic tagging

We present a search for the rare leptonic decays $B^+ \to e^+ ν_e$ and $B^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ$, using the full $Υ(4S)$ data sample of $772\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the $\small\textbf{KEKB}$ asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. One of the $B$ mesons from the $Υ(4S) \to B\bar{B}$ decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode, while the recoiling side is analyzed for the signal decay. We find no evidence of a signal in any of the decay modes. Upper limits of the corresponding branching fractions are determined as ${\cal B}(B^+ \to e^+ ν_e)<3.5\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(B^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ)<2.7 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90$\%$ confidence level.

Study of $Λ_b\rightarrow~ Λl^+l^-$ and $Λ_b\rightarrow p l \barν$ decays in the Bethe-Salpeter equation approach

In our previous work, based on the $SU(6)$ spin-flavor wave function, we regard $Λ$ and $p$ as composed of different quark-diquark configurations and established the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equations of configurations for quark and scalar diquark. In our present work, we apply this model to calculate the form factors of the semileptonic transitions $Λ_b\rightarrowΛl^+l^-$ $(l=μ,e,τ)$ and $Λ_b\rightarrow p l\barν$ within the Standard Model (SM). The decay $Λ_b\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$ is especially interesting since it has been measured in CDF and LHCb Collaborations and this rare decay is very sensitive to new physics effects. The decay $Λ_b\rightarrow p l\barν$ is a promising mode for the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ at the Large Hadron Collider. In our calculations, depending on the ranges of the parameters in the model including the diquark mass and the interaction strength between the quark and the diquark in the kernel of the BS equation, we find that the branching ratio of $Λ_b\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$ in our model is consistent with the experimental data and the current experimental results from LHCb agree with the differential branching ratio of $Λ_b\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$ from our calculation except at the lager momentum transfer region. This indicates that there is still room for possible new physics effects. We also give comparisions of the total branching ratios of $Λ_b\rightarrowΛl^+l^-$ and $Λ_b\rightarrow p l\barν$ with those given by other phenomenological methods.

Carbon p Electron Ferromagnetism in Silicon Carbide

Ferromagnetism can occur in wide-band gap semiconductors as well as in carbon-based materials when specific defects are introduced. It is thus desirable to establish a direct relation between the defects and the resulting ferromagnetism. Here, we contribute to revealing the origin of defect-induced ferromagnetism using SiC as a prototypical example. We show that the long-range ferromagnetic coupling can be attributed to the p electrons of the nearest-neighbor carbon atoms around the VSiVC divacancies. Thus, the ferromagnetism is traced down to its microscopic, electronic origin.
