Mapping the phase diagram of spinor condensates via adiabatic quantum phase transitions

We experimentally study two quantum phase transitions in a sodium spinor condensate immersed in a microwave dressing field. We also demonstrate that many previously unexplored regions in the phase diagram of spinor condensates can be investigated by adiabatically tuning the microwave field across one of the two quantum phase transitions. This method overcomes two major experimental challenges associated with some widely used methods, and is applicable to other atomic species. Agreements between our data and the mean-field theory for spinor Bose gases are also discussed.

Study of B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0 decays, implications for the CKM angle phi_2 and search for other B^0 decay modes with a four-pion final state

We present a study of the branching fraction of the decay B^0->rho0rho0 and the fraction of longitudinally polarized rho0 mesons in this decay. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We find 166 +- 59 B^0 -> rho0 rho0 events (including systematic uncertainties), corresponding to a branching fraction of B(B^0->rho0rho0) = (1.02 +- 0.30 (stat) +- 0.15 (syst)) x 10^{-6} with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations and a longitudinal polarization fraction fL = 0.21^{+0.18}_{-0.22} (stat) +- 0.15 (syst). We use the longitudinal polarization fraction to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix angle phi_2 = (84.9 +- 13.5) degrees through an isospin analysis in the B->rhorho system. We furthermore find 149 +- 49 B^0->f0rho0 events, corresponding to B(B^0->f0rho0) x B(f0->pi+pi-) = (0.78 +- 0.22 (stat) +- 0.11 (syst)) x 10^{-6}, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations. We find no other significant contribution with the same final state, and set upper limits at 90% confidence level on the (product) branching fractions, B(B^0->pi+pi-pi+pi-)<11.2 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->rho0pi+pi-)<12.0 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->f0pi+pi-) x B(f0->pi+pi-) <3.0 x 10^{-6} and B(B^0->f0f0) x B(f0->pi+pi-)^{2} < 0.2 x 10^{-6}.

Measurement of ${D^{0}}$-${\overline{D}{}^{0}}$ Mixing and Search for Indirect $CP$ Violation Using ${D^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-}$ Decays

We report a measurement of ${D^{0}}$-${\overline{D}{}^{0}}$ mixing parameters and a search for indirect $CP$ violation through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of ${D^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-}$ decays. The results are based on 921~fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. Assuming $CP$ conservation, we measure the mixing parameters $x=(0.56\pm0.19^{+0.03}_{-0.09}{^{+0.06}_{-0.09}})\%$ and $y=(0.30\pm0.15^{+0.04}_{-0.05}{^{+0.03}_{-0.06})}\%$, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and systematic due to the amplitude model, respectively. With $CP$ violation allowed, the parameters $|q/p|=0.90^{+0.16}_{-0.15}{^{+0.05}_{-0.04}}{^{+0.06}_{-0.05}}$ and $\arg(q/p)=(-6\pm11{\pm3}{^{+3}_{-4}})^{\circ}$ are found to be consistent with conservation of $CP$ symmetry in mixing and in the interference between mixing and decay, respectively.

The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) Vector Magnetic Field Pipeline: Optimization of the Spectral Line Inversion Code

The Very Fast Inversion of the Stokes Vector (VFISV) is a Milne-Eddington spectral line inversion code used to determine the magnetic and thermodynamic parameters of the solar photosphere from observations of the Stokes vector in the 6173 A Fe I line by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We report on the modifications made to the original VFISV inversion code in order to optimize its operation within the HMI data pipeline and provide the smoothest solution in active regions. The changes either sped up the computation or reduced the frequency with which the algorithm failed to converge to a satisfactory solution. Additionally, coding bugs which were detected and fixed in the original VFISV release, are reported here.

Measurement of branching fractions for B \to J/ψηK decays and search for a narrow resonance in the J/ψηfinal state

We report an observation of the $B^{\pm} \to J/ψηK^{\pm}$ and $B^0 \to J/ψηK^0_S$ decays using 772$\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We obtain the branching fractions ${\cal B}(B^{\pm}\rightarrow J/ψηK^{\pm})=(1.27\pm 0.11{\rm (stat.)\pm 0.11{\rm (syst.)})}\times10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(B^0\to J/ψηK^0_S)=(5.22 \pm 0.78 {\rm(stat.)} \pm 0.49{\rm(syst.)})\times10^{-5}$. We search for a new narrow charmonium(-like) state $X$ in the $J/ψη$ mass spectrum and find no significant excess. We set upper limits on the product of branching fractions, ${\cal B}(B^\pm \to XK^\pm){\cal B}(X \to J/ψη)$, at 3872 MeV$/c^2$ where a $C$-odd partner of X(3872) may exist, at $ψ(4040)$ and $ψ(4160)$ assuming their known mass and width, and over a range from 3.8 to 4.8 GeV$/c^2$. % at a 5 MeV$/c^2$ step. The obtained upper limits at 90% confidence level for $X^{C{\rm -odd}}(3872)$, $ψ(4040)$ and $ψ(4160)$ are 3.8$\times 10^{-6}$, 15.5$\times 10^{-6}$ and 7.4$\times 10^{-6}$, respectively.

A comprehensive scenario of the single crystal growth and doping dependence of resistivity and anisotropic upper critical fields in (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.22 \leq x \leq 1$)

Large high-quality single crystals of hole-doped iron-based superconductor (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ were grown over a broad composition range $0.22 \leq x \leq 1$ by inverted temperature gradient method. We found that high soaking temperature, fast cooling rate, and adjusted temperature window of the growth are necessary to obtain single crystals of heavily K doped crystals (0.65$\leq x \leq$ 0.92) with narrow compositional distributions as revealed by sharp superconducting transitions in magnetization measurements and close to 100% superconducting volume fraction. The crystals were extensively characterized by x-ray and compositional analysis, revealing monotonic evolution of the $c$-axis crystal lattice parameter with K substitution. Quantitative measurements of the temperature-dependent in-plane resistivity, $ρ(T)$ found doping-independent, constant within error bars, resistivity at room temperature, $ρ(300K)$, in sharp contrast with significant doping dependence in electron and isovalent substituted BaFe$_2$As$_2$ based compositions. The shape of the temperature dependent resistivity, $ρ(T)$, shows systematic doping-evolution, being close to $T^2$ in overdoped and revealing significant contribution of the $T$-linear component at optimum doping. The slope of the upper critical field, $d H_{c2}/dT$, scales linearly with $T_c$ for both $H\parallel c$, $ H_{c2,c}$, and $H \parallel ab$, $H_{c2,ab}$. The anisotropy of the upper critical field, $γ\equiv H_{c2,ab} / H_{c2,c}$ determined near zero-field $T_c$ increases from $\sim$2 to 4-5 with increasing K doping level from optimal $x \sim$0.4 to strongly overdoped $x$=1.

Characterization of Spatial Coherence of Synchrotron Radiation with Non-Redundant Arrays of Apertures

We present a method to characterize the spatial coherence of soft X-ray radiation from a single diffraction pattern. The technique is based on scattering from non-redundant arrays (NRA) of slits and records the degree of spatial coherence at several relative separations from one to 15 microns, simultaneously. Using NRAs we measured the transverse coherence of the X-ray beam at the XUV X-ray beamline P04 of the PETRA III synchrotron storage ring as a function of different beam parameters. To verify the results obtained with the NRAs additional Young's double pinhole experiments were conducted and show good agreement.

Search for doubly charmed baryons and study of charmed strange baryons at Belle

We report results of a study of doubly charmed baryons and charmed strange baryons. The analysis is performed using a 980 fb^-1 data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We search for doubly charmed baryons Xi_cc^+(+) with the Lambda_c^+K^-pi^+(pi^+) and Xi_c^0pi^+(pi^+) final states. No significant signal is observed. We also search for two excited charmed strange baryons, Xi_c(3055)^+ and Xi_c(3123)^+ with the Sigma_c^++(2455)K^- and Sigma_c^++(2520)K^- final states. The Xi_c(3055)^+ signal is observed with a significance of 6.6 standard deviations including systematic uncertainty, while no signature of the Xi_c(3123)^+ is seen. We also study properties of the Xi_c(2645)^+ and measure a width of 2.6 +- 0.2 (stat) +- 0.4 (syst) MeV/c^2, which is the first significant determination.

Optimizing a spin-flip Zeeman slower

We present a design of a spin-flip Zeeman slower controlled by a fast feedback circuit for a sodium Bose-Einstein condensate apparatus. We also demonstrate how the efficiency of the slower strongly depends on its intrinsic parameters, and compare these observations with a few theoretical models. Our findings lead to a simple three-step procedure of designing an optimal Zeeman slower for neutral atoms, especially for those atomic species with high initial velocities, such as sodium and lithium atoms.

Comparison of Analytical and Numerical Resolution Functions in Sputter Depth Profiling

Quantification of sputter depth profiles is frequently done by fitting the convolution integral over concentration and depth resolution function. For a thin delta layer, there exist analytical solutions. The analytical depth resolution functions of two popular approaches, that of the MRI model and that of Dowsett and coworkers are compared. It is concluded that the analytical depth resolution function of the MRI model gives the correct location of a buried delta layer with respect to the measured profile, and a clear description of the information depth in AES, XPS and SIMS. Both analytical solutions can be extended to larger layer thickness. But they are less flexible with respect to physical parameters which are not constant with concentration or sputtered depth, such as detection sensitivity, atomic mixing, roughness or preferential sputtering. For these cases, numerical solutions have to be used.

Phase Diagrams for the $ν$ = 1/2 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Electron Systems Confined to Symmetric, Wide GaAs Quantum Wells

We report an experimental investigation of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at the even-denominator Landau level filling factor $ν$ = 1/2 in very high quality wide GaAs quantum wells, and at very high magnetic fields up to 45 T. The quasi-two-dimensional electron systems we study are confined to GaAs quantum wells with widths $W$ ranging from 41 to 96 nm and have variable densities in the range of $\simeq 4 \times 10^{11}$ to $\simeq 4 \times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$. We present several experimental phase diagrams for the stability of the $ν=1/2$ FQHE in these quantum wells. In general, for a given $W$, the 1/2 FQHE is stable in a limited range of intermediate densities where it has a bilayer-like charge distribution; it makes a transition to a compressible phase at low densities and to an insulating phase at high densities. The densities at which the $ν=1/2$ FQHE is stable are larger for narrower quantum wells. Moreover, even a slight charge distribution asymmetry destabilizes the $ν=1/2$ FQHE and turns the electron system into a compressible state. We also present a plot of the symmetric-to-antisymmetric subband separation ($Δ_{SAS}$), which characterizes the inter-layer tunneling, vs density for various $W$. This plot reveals that $Δ_{SAS}$ at the boundary between the compressible and FQHE phases increases \textit{linearly} with density for all the samples. Finally, we summarize the experimental data in a diagram that takes into account the relative strengths of the inter-layer and intra-layer Coulomb interactions and $Δ_{SAS}$. We conclude that, consistent with the conclusions of some of the previous studies, the $ν=1/2$ FQHE observed in wide GaAs quantum wells with symmetric charge distribution is stabilized by a delicate balance between the inter-layer and intra-layer interactions, and is very likely described by a two-component ($Ψ_{311}$) state.

Measurement of the Decays $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020)$, $B^0_{s}\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525)$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,K^+K^-$ at Belle

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020)$, evidence and a branching fraction measurement for $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525)$, and the determination of the total $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,K^+K^-$ branching fraction, including the resonant and non-resonant contributions to the $K^+K^-$ channel. We also determine the $S$-wave contribution within the $ϕ(1020)$ mass region. The absolute branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020)]=(1.25 \pm 0.07\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.08\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.22\left(f_s\right))\times 10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525)]=(0.26\pm 0.06\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.02\left(\mathrm{syst}\right) \pm 0.05\left(f_s\right))\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,K^+K^-] = (1.01\pm 0.09\left(\mathrm{stat}\right) \pm 0.10\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.18\left(f_s\right))\times 10^{-3}$, where the last systematic error is due to the branching fraction of $b\bar{b}\to B^{(*)}_s B^{(*)}_s$. The branching fraction ratio is found to be $\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525)]/\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020)]=(21.5\pm 4.9\left(\mathrm{stat}\right) \pm2.6\left(\mathrm{syst}\right))%$. All results are based on a 121.4 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance by the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider.

Evidence for the suppressed decay B^- -> DK^-, D -> K^+π^-π^0

We report a study of the suppressed decay B^- -> DK^-, D -> K^+π^-π^0, where D denotes either a D^0 or a \bar{D}^0 meson. The decay is sensitive to the CP-violating parameter ϕ_3. Using a data sample of 772 x 10^6 B\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector, we measure the ratio of branching fractions of the above suppressed decay to the favored decay B^- -> DK^-, D -> K^-π^+π^0. Our result is R_{DK} = [1.98 +/- 0.62(stat.) +/- 0.24(syst.)] x 10^{-2}, which indicates the first evidence of the signal for this suppressed decay with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. We measure the direct CP asymmetry between the suppressed B^- and B^+ decays to be A_{DK} = 0.41 +/- 0.30 (stat.) +/- 0.05 (syst.). We also report measurements for the analogous quantities R_{Dπ} and A_{Dπ} for the decay B^- -> Dπ^-, D -> K^+π^-π^0.

Dynamics in spinor condensates controlled by a microwave dressing field

We experimentally study spin dynamics in a sodium antiferromagnetic spinor condensate with off-resonant microwave pulses. In contrast to a magnetic field, a microwave dressing field enables us to explore rich spin dynamics under the influence of a negative net quadratic Zeeman shift $q_{\rm net}$. We find an experimental signature to determine the sign of $q_{\rm net}$, and observe harmonic spin population oscillations at every $q_{\rm net}$ except near each separatrix in phase space where spin oscillation period diverges. In the negative and positive $q_{\rm net}$ regions, we also observe a remarkably different relationship between each separatrix and the magnetization. Our data confirms an important prediction derived from the mean-field theory: spin-mixing dynamics in spin-1 condensates substantially depends on the sign of the ratio of $q_{\rm net}$ and the spin-dependent interaction energy. This work may thus be the first to use only one atomic species to reveal mean-field spin dynamics, especially the separatrix, which are predicted to appear differently in spin-1 antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spinor condensates.
