Topological second-order spin-3/2 liquids with hinge Fermi arcs

We present an exactly solvable spin-3/2 model defined on a pentacoordinated three-dimensional graphite lattice, which realizes a novel quantum spin liquid with second-order topology. The exact solutions are described by Majorana fermions coupled to a background $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field, whose ground-state flux configuration gives rise to an emergent off-centered spacetime inversion symmetry. The symmetry protects topologically nontrivial band structures for the Majorana fermions, particularly including nodal-line semimetal phases with twofold topological charges: the second Stiefel-Whitney number and the quantized Berry phase. The former leads to rich topological phenomena on the system boundaries. There are two nodal-line semimetal phases hosting hinge Fermi arcs located on different hinges, and they are separated by a critical Dirac semimetal state with surface helical Fermi arcs. In addition, we show that rich symmetry/topology can be explored in our model by simply varying the lattice or interaction arrangement. As an example, we discuss how to achieve a topological gapped phase with surface Dirac points.

Band structure of the epitaxial Fe/MgO/GaAs(001) tunnel junction studied by X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy

The electronic band structure in the epitaxial Fe/MgO/GaAs(001) tunnel junction has been studied by X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The Schottky barrier height (SBH) of Fe on MgO/GaAs heterostructure is determined to be 3.3+-0.1eV, which sets the Fe Fermi level about 0.3eV above the GaAs valence band maximum. This SBH is also exactly the same as that measured from Fe on MgO monocrystal. After Fe deposition, no band bending change is observed in MgO and GaAs underlayers. On the contrary, Au and Al deposition lead to clear variation of the band bending in both MgO and GaAs layers. This effect is analyzed as a fingerprint of defects states at the MgO/GaAs interface.

Electrical spin injection into InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells: a comparison between MgO tunnel barriers grown by sputtering and molecular beam epitaxy methods

An efficient electrical spin injection into an InGaAs/GaAs quantum well light emitting diode is demonstrated thanks to a CoFeB/MgO spin injector. The textured MgO tunnel barrier is fabricated by two different techniques: sputtering and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The maximal spin injection efficiency is comparable for both methods. Additionally, the effect of annealing is also investigated for the two types of samples. Both samples show the same trend: an increase of the electroluminescence circular polarization (Pc) with the increase of annealing temperature, followed by a saturation of Pc beyond 350°C annealing. Since the increase of Pc starts well below the crystallization temperature of the full CoFeB bulk layer, this trend could be mainly due to an improvement of chemical structure at the top CoFeB/MgO interface. This study reveals that the control of CoFeB/MgO interface is essential important for an optimal spin injection into semiconductor.

Excited light baryons from quark-gluon-level calculations

The task of mapping and explaining the spectrum of baryons and the structure of these states in terms of quarks and gluons is a longstanding challenge in hadron physics, which is likely to persist for another decade or more. We review the progress made in this topic using a functional method based on Dyson-Schwinger equations. This framework provides a non-perturbative, Poincaré-covariant continuum formulation of Quantum Chromodynamics which is able to extract novel insight on baryon properties since the physics at the hadron level is directly related with the underlying quark-gluon substructure, via convolution of Green functions.

Variation of the fundamental band gap nature in curved two-dimensional WS2

We report a strain-induced direct-to-indirect band gap transition in mechanically deformed WS2 monolayers (MLs). The necessary amount of strain is attained by proton irradiation of bulk WS2 and the ensuing formation of one-ML-thick, H2-filled domes. The electronic properties of the curved MLs are mapped by spatially- and time-resolved micro-photoluminescence revealing the mechanical stress conditions that trigger the variation of the band gap character. This general phenomenon, also observed in MoS2 and WSe2, further increases our understanding of the electronic structure of transition metal dichalcogenide MLs and holds a great relevance for their optoelectronic applications.

Evolution of the X-ray Profile of the Crab Pulsar

Using the archive data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ({\sl RXTE}), we have studied the evolution of the X-ray profile of the Crab pulsar in a time span of 11 years. The X-ray profiles, as characterized by a few parameters, changed slightly but significantly in these years: the separation of the two peaks increased with a rate $0.88\pm0.20\,\textordmasculine$\,per century, the flux ratio of the second pulse to the first pulse decreased with $(3.64\pm0.86)\times10^{-2}$\,per century, and the pulse widths of the two pulses descended with $1.44\pm0.15\,\textordmasculine$\, and $1.09\pm0.73\,\textordmasculine$\,per century, respectively. The evolutionary trends of the above parameters are similar to the radio results, but the values are different. We briefly discussed the constraints of these X-ray properties on the geometry of the emission region of this pulsar.

Natural-Orbital Impurity Solver and Projection Approach for Green's Function

We extend a previously proposed rotation and truncation scheme to optimize quantum Anderson impurity calculations with exact diagonalization [PRB 90, 085102 (2014)] to density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. The method reduces the solution of a full impurity problem with virtually unlimited bath sites to that of a small subsystem based on a natural impurity orbital basis set. The later is solved by DMRG in combination with a restricted-active-space truncation scheme. The method allows one to compute Green's functions directly on the real frequency or time axis. We critically test the convergence of the truncation scheme using a one-band Hubbard model solved in the dynamical mean-field theory. The projection is exact in the limit of both infinitely large and small Coulomb interactions. For all parameter ranges the accuracy of the projected solution converges exponentially to the exact solution with increasing subsystem size.

Nucleon-to-Resonance Form Factors at Large Photon Virtualities

We present a unified description of elastic and transition form factors involving the nucleon and its resonances; in particular, the $N(1440)$, $Δ(1232)$ and $Δ(1600)$. We compare predictions made using a framework built upon a Faddeev equation kernel and interaction vertices that possess QCD-kindred momentum dependence with results obtained using a confining, symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector$\,\otimes\,$vector contact-interaction in a widely-used leading-order (rainbow-ladder) truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations. This comparison explains that the contact-interaction framework produces hard form factors, curtails some quark orbital angular momentum correlations within a baryon, and suppresses two-loop diagrams in the elastic and transition electromagnetic currents. Such defects are rectified in our QCD-kindred framework and, by contrasting the results obtained for the same observables in both theoretical schemes, shows those objects which are most sensitive to the momentum dependence of elementary quantities in QCD.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of bond order and spin excitations in nickelate thin-film structures

We used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni $L_3$ edge to simultaneously investigate high-energy interband transitions characteristic of Ni-O bond ordering and low-energy collective excitations of the Ni spins in the rare-earth nickelates $R$NiO$_3$ ($R$ = Nd, Pr, La) with pseudocubic perovskite structure. With the support of calculations based on a double-cluster model we quantify bond order (BO) amplitudes for different thin films and heterostructures and discriminate short-range BO fluctuations from long-range static order. Moreover we investigate magnetic order and exchange interactions in spatially confined $R$NiO$_3$ slabs by probing dispersive magnon excitations. While our study of superlattices (SLs) grown in the (001) direction of the perovskite structure reveals a robust non-collinear spin spiral magnetic order with dispersive magnon excitations that are essentially unperturbed by BO modulations and spatial confinement, we find magnons with flat dispersions and strongly reduced energies in SLs grown in the $(111)_{\text{pc}}$ direction that exhibit collinear magnetic order. These results give insight into the interplay of different collective ordering phenomena in a prototypical 3$d$ transition metal oxide and establish RIXS as a powerful tool to quantitatively study several order parameters and the corresponding collective excitations within one experiment.

Evidence of Pure Spin-Current Generated by Spin Pumping in Interface Localized States in Hybrid Metal-Silicon-Metal Vertical Structures

Due to the difficulty to grow high quality semiconductors on ferromagnetic metals, the study of spin diffusion transport in Si was only limited to lateral geometry devices. In this work, by using ultra-high vacuum wafer-bonding technique, we have successfully fabricated metal semiconductor metal CoFeB/MgO/Si/Pt vertical structures. We hereby demonstrate pure spin-current injection and transport in the perpendicular current flow geometry over a distance larger than 2μm in n-type Si at room temperature. In those experiments, a pure propagating spin-current is generated via ferromagnetic resonance spin-pumping and converted into a measurable voltage by using the inverse spin-Hall effect occurring in the top Pt layer. A systematic study by varying both Si and MgO thicknesses reveals the important role played by the localized states at the MgO/Si interface for the spin-current generation. Proximity effects involving indirect exchange interactions between the ferromagnet and the MgO/Si interface states appears to be a prerequisite to establish the necessary out-of-equilibrium spin-population in Si under the spin-pumping action.

Numerical Simulation of magnetized jet creation using a hollow ring of laser beams

Three dimensional FLASH magneto-hydrodynamics(MHD) modeling is carried out to interpret the OMEGA laser experiments of strongly magnetized, highly collimated jets driven by a ring of 20 OMEGA beams. The predicted optical Thomson scattering spectra and proton images are in good agreement with a subset of the experimental data. Magnetic fields generated via the Biermann battery term are amplified at the boundary between the core and the surrounding of the jet. The simulation predicts multiple axially aligned magnetic flux ropes with alternating poloidal component. Future applications of the hollow ring configuration in laboratory astrophysics are discussed.

Site-selective Probe of Magnetic Excitations in Rare-earth Nickelates using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We have used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study a thin film of NdNiO$_3$, a compound whose unusual spin- and bond-ordered electronic ground state has been of long-standing interest. Below the magnetic ordering temperature, we observe well-defined collective magnon excitations along different high-symmetry directions in momentum space. The magnetic spectra depend strongly on the incident photon energy, which we attribute to RIXS coupling to different local electronic configurations of the expanded and compressed NiO$_6$ octahedra in the bond-ordered state. Both the noncollinear magnetic ground state and the observed site-dependent magnon excitations are well described by a model that assumes strong competition between the antiferromagnetic superexchange and ferromagnetic double-exchange interactions. Our study provides direct insight into the magnetic dynamics and exchange interactions of the rare-earth nickelates, and demonstrates that RIXS can serve as a site-selective probe of magnetism in these and other materials.

Deterministic Bidirectional Communication and Remote Entanglement Generation Between Superconducting Quantum Processors

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple and efficient scheme for photonic communication between two remote superconducting modules. Each module consists of a random access quantum information processor with eight-qubit multimode memory and a single flux tunable transmon. The two processor chips are connected through a one-meter long coaxial cable that is coupled to a dedicated "communication" resonator on each chip. The two communication resonators hybridize with a mode of the cable to form a dark "communication mode" that is highly immune to decay in the coaxial cable. We modulate the transmon frequency via a parametric drive to generate sideband interactions between the transmon and the communication mode. We demonstrate bidirectional single-photon transfer with a success probability exceeding 60 %, and generate an entangled Bell pair with a fidelity of 79.3 $\pm$ 0.3 %.

Electrical initialization of electron and nuclear spins in a single quantum dot at zero magnetic field

The emission of circularly polarized light from a single quantum dot relies on the injection of carriers with well-defined spin polarization. Here we demonstrate single dot electroluminescence (EL) with a circular polarization degree up to 35% at zero applied magnetic field. The injection of spin polarized electrons is achieved by combining ultrathin CoFeB electrodes on top of a spin-LED device with p-type InGaAs quantum dots in the active region. We measure an Overhauser shift of several $μ$eV at zero magnetic field for the positively charged exciton (trion X$^+$) EL emission, which changes sign as we reverse the injected electron spin orientation. This is a signature of dynamic polarization of the nuclear spins in the quantum dot induced by the hyperfine interaction with the electrically injected electron spin. This study paves the way for electrical control of nuclear spin polarization in a single quantum dot without any external magnetic field.

Spectroscopy of reflection-asymmetric nuclei with relativistic energy density functionals

Quadrupole and octupole deformation energy surfaces, low-energy excitation spectra and transition rates in fourteen isotopic chains: Xe, Ba, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Rn, Ra, Th, U, Pu, Cm, Cf, and Fm, are systematically analyzed using a theoretical framework based on a quadrupole-octupole collective Hamiltonian (QOCH), with parameters determined by constrained reflection-asymmetric and axially-symmetric relativistic mean-field calculations. The microscopic QOCH model based on the PC-PK1 energy density functional and $δ$-interaction pairing is shown to accurately describe the empirical trend of low-energy quadrupole and octupole collective states, and predicted spectroscopic properties are consistent with recent microscopic calculations based on both relativistic and non-relativistic energy density functionals. Low-energy negative-parity bands, average octupole deformations, and transition rates show evidence for octupole collectivity in both mass regions, for which a microscopic mechanism is discussed in terms of evolution of single-nucleon orbitals with deformation.

Phase Evolution of the Crab Pulsar between Radio and X-ray

We study the X-ray phases of the Crab pulsar utilizing the 11-year observations from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, 6-year radio observations from the Nanshan Telescope, and the ephemeris from Jodrell Bank Observatory. It is found that the X-ray phases in different energy bands and the radio phases from Nanshan Telescope show similar behaviors, including long-time evolution and short-time variations. Such strong correlations between the X-ray and radio phases imply that the radio and X-ray timing noises are both generated from the pulsar spin that cannot be well described by the the monthly ephemeris from the Jodrell Bank observatory. When using the Nanshan phases as references to study the X-ray timing noise, it has a significantly smaller variation amplitude and shows no long-time evolution, with a change rate of $(-1.1\pm1.1)\times10^{-7}$ periods per day. These results show that the distance of the X-ray and radio emission regions on the Crab pulsar has no detectable secular change, and it is unlikely that timing-noises resulted from any unique physical processes in the radio or X-ray emitting regions. The similar behaviors of the X-ray and radio timing noises also imply that the variation of the interstellar medium is not the origin of the Crab pulsar's timing noises, which is consistent with the results obtained from the multi-frequency radio observations of PSR B1540-06.

Crossover from Collective to Incoherent Spin Excitations in Superconducting Cuprates Probed by Detuned Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Spin excitations in the overdoped high temperature superconductors Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and (Bi,Pb)$_2$(Sr,La)$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ were investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) as functions of doping and detuning of the incoming photon energy above the Cu-$L_3$ absorption peak. The RIXS spectra at optimal doping are dominated by a paramagnon feature with peak energy independent of photon energy, similar to prior results on underdoped cuprates. Beyond optimal doping, the RIXS data indicate a sharp crossover to a regime with a strong contribution from incoherent particle/hole excitations whose maximum shows a fluorescence-like shift upon detuning. The spectra of both compound families are closely similar, and their salient features are reproduced by exact-diagonalization calculations of the single-band Hubbard model on a finite cluster. The results are discussed in the light of recent transport experiments indicating a quantum phase transition near optimal doping.

Topological Landau Lattice

The concept of topological fermions, including Weyl and Dirac fermions, stems from the quantum Hall state induced by a magnetic field, but the definitions and classifications of topological fermions are formulated without using magnetic field. It is unclear whether and how the topological information of topological fermions can be probed once their eigen spectrum is completely rebuilt by a strong magnetic field. In this work, we provide an answer via mapping Landau levels (bands) of topological fermions in $d$ dimensions to the spectrum of a $(d-1)$-dimensional lattice model. The resultant "Landau lattice" may correspond to a topological insulator, and its topological property can be determined by real-space topological invariants. Accordingly, each zero-energy Landau level (band) inherits the topological stability from the corresponding topological boundary state of the Landau lattice. The theory is demonstrated in detail by transforming 2D Dirac fermions under magnetic fields to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models in class AIII, and 3D Weyl fermions to the Chern insulators in class A.
