Velocity dispersion profiles of dwarf spheroidal galaxies with self-interacting ultralight dark matter

Dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxies provide an excellent laboratory for testing dark matter models at small scale and, in particular, the ultralight dark matter (ULDM) class of models. Within the framework of self-interacting bosonic dark matter, we use the observed velocity-dispersion profiles of seven dwarf spheroidal galaxies to constrain the parameters of ULDM. In our modeling, we account for the impact of the baryonic component on the velocity dispersion and ULDM halo structure. We find that the repulsive self-interaction of ULDM, which fits the observations, is almost negligible, consistent with non-interacting ULDM with a boson mass of approximately $1.6 \times 10^{-22}\,\mathrm{eV}$. In contrast, for attractively interacting ULDM, the best fit corresponds to a smaller boson mass of about $1.3 \times 10^{-22}\,\mathrm{eV}$, with self-interaction playing a significant role in shaping the dark-matter halo and thereby influencing the interpretation of observations.

Dynamical galactic effects induced by stable vortex structure in bosonic dark matter

The nature of dark matter (DM) remains one of the unsolved mysteries of modern physics. An intriguing possibility is to assume that DM consists of ultralight bosonic particles in the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) state. We study stationary DM structures by using the system of the Gross-Pitaevskii and Poisson equations, including the effective temperature effect with parameters chosen to describe the Milky Way galaxy. We have investigated DM structure with BEC core and isothermal envelope. We compare the spherically symmetric and vortex core states, which allows us to analyze the impact of the core vorticity on the halo density, velocity distribution, and, therefore, its gravitational field. Gravitational field calculation is done in the gravitoelectromagnetism approach to include the impact of the core rotation, which induces a gravimagnetic field. As result, the halo with a vortex core is characterized by smaller orbital velocity in the galactic disk region in comparison with the non-rotating halo. It is found that the core vorticity produces gravimagnetic perturbation of celestial body dynamics, which can modify the circular trajectories.

Stable vortex structures in colliding self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensates

A key feature of ultra-light dark matter composed by bosons is the formation of superfluid Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) structures on galactic scales. We study collisions of BEC solitonic and vortex structures in the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson model. It is found that the superfluid nature of bosonic dark matter leads to the formation of quantized vortex lines and vortex rings in interference patterns formed during collisions. Calculating the gravitational wave luminosity, we demonstrated that quantum interference patterns affect notably the gravitational wave radiation. We reveal that superfluid self-gravitating BECs can form stable localized vortex structures which remain robust even after a head-on collision.

Fine structure of the stripe phase in ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling

We report on a theoretical study of a ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate with Raman-induced spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling. We analyze the structure of the ground-state of the system depending different physical parameters and reveal a peculiar fine structure within the stripe phase on the phase diagram. We demonstrate the existence of the predicted stripe sub-phases within a wide range of physical parameters, their traceability through physical observables, and compare the results with several commonly used variational approximations. We also show that predicted sub-phases of the stripe phase can be observed within experimentally realizable conditions.

Symmetry breaking and phase transitions in Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling

Theoretical study is presented for a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, whose two components are coupled by copropagating Raman beams with different orbital angular momenta. The investigation is focused on the behavior of the ground state of this condensate, depending on the atom-light coupling strength. By analyzing the ground state, we have identified a number of quantum phases, which reflect the symmetries of the effective Hamiltonian and are characterized by the specific structure of the wave function. In addition to the well-known stripe, polarized and zero-momentum phases, our results show that the system can support phases, whose wave function contains a complex vortex molecule. Such molecule plays an important role in the continuous phase transitions of the system. The predicted behavior of vortex-molecule phases can be examined in cold-atom experiments using currently existing techniques.

Dispersion relations and self-localization of quasiparticles in coupled elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a detailed study of the spectrum and dispersion of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in two coupled elongated Bose-Einstein condensates. We develop an analytically solvable model that approximates two infinite homogeneous condensates and compare its predictions to a numerical simulation of a realistic trapped system. While the comparisons show a reasonable agreement between the two models, they also manifest the existence of several anomalous Bogoliubov modes in the spectrum. These modes show degeneracy in both energy and momentum together with self-localization in the coordinate space.

Projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation for ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose an alternative implementation of the Projected Gross-Pitaevskki equation adapted for numerical modeling of the atomic Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a toroidally-shaped potential. We present an accurate and efficient scheme to evaluate the required matrix elements and calculate time evolution of the matter wave field. We analyze the stability and accuracy of the developed method for equilibrium and nonequilibrium solutions in a ring-shaped trap with additional barrier potential corresponding to recent experimental realizations.

Collective excitations and tunneling dynamics in long bosonic Josephson junctions

We investigate the low-energy dynamics of two coupled anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates forming a long Josephson junction. The theoretical study is performed in the framework of the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. We analyze the excitation spectrum of the coupled Bose condensates and show how low-energy excitations of the condensates lead to multiple-frequency oscillations of the atomic populations in the two wells. This analysis generalizes the standard bosnic Josephson euqation approach. We also develop a one-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the coupled condensates, that is capable to reproduce the excitation spectrum and population dynamics of the system.

Finite-temperature dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction

In the framework of the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation we investigate finite-temperature dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction (BJJ) formed by a Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms in a two-well trapping potential. We extract the characteristic properties of the BJJ from the stationary finite-temperature solutions and compare the dynamics of the system with the resistively shunted Josephson model. Analyzing the decay dynamics of the relative population imbalance we estimate the effective normal conductance of the junction induced by thermal atoms. The calculated normal conductance at various temperatures is then compared with predictions of the noise-less model and the model of ballistic transport of thermal atoms.

Phonon-Josephson resonances in atomtronic circuits

We study the resonant excitation of sound modes from Josephson oscillations in Bose-Einstein condensates. From the simulations for various setups using the Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field equations and Josephson equations we observe additional tunneling currents induced by resonant phonons. The proposed experiment may be used for spectroscopy of phonons as well as other low-energy collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates. We also argue that the observed effect may mask the observation of Shapiro resonances if not carefully controlled.

Stable Hopf solitons in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We reveal that Hopf solitons can be stabilized in rotating atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The Hopfion is a matter-wave vortex complex which carries two independent winding numbers. Such a topological solitonic structure results from a superfluid flow of atoms simultaneously quantized in poloidal and toroidal directions. In the framework of a dissipative mean-field model we observe different unstable evolution scenarios of the Hopfions. We demonstrate energetic and dynamical stability of the Hopf solitons under experimentally feasible conditions.

Generation and decay of persistent current in a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate

Persistent current, or "flow without friction", as well as quantum vortices are the hallmarks of superfluidity. Recently a very long-lived persistent flow of atoms has been experimentally observed in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a ring-shaped potential. This enables fundamental studies of superfluidity and may lead to applications in high-precision metrology and atomtronics. We overview our recent theoretical studies of the generation of the persistent current in a stirred toroidal atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, and discuss our new investigation of the hysteresis in the atomtronic circuit.

Vortices in a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate with a rotating weak link

Motivated by a recent experiment [K.C. Wright et. al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 025302 (2013)], we investigate deterministic discontinuous jumps between quantized circulation states in a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. These phase slips are induced by vortex excitations created by a rotating weak link. We analyze influence of a localized condensate density depletion and atomic superflows, governed by the rotating barrier, on the energetic and dynamical stability of the vortices in the ring-shaped condensate. We simulate in a three-dimensional dissipative mean field model the dynamics of the condensate using parameters similar to the experimental conditions. Moreover, we consider the dynamics of the stirred condensate far beyond the experimentally explored region and reveal surprising manifestations of complex vortex dynamics.

Energy terms and stability diagrams for the 2D problem of three charged particles

Symmetric and antisymmetric terms have been obtained in the framework of the variational approach for two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb systems of symmetric trions XXY. Stability diagrams and certain anomalies arising in the 2D space are explained qualitatively in the framework of the Born--Oppenheimer adiabatic approximation. The asymptotics of energy terms at large distances obtained for an arbitrary space dimensionality are analyzed, and some approximation formulas for 2D terms are proposed. An anomalous dependence of multipole moments on the space dimensionality has been found in the case of a spherically symmetric field. The main results obtained for the 2D and 3D problems of two Coulomb centers are compared.
