Multiple superconducting transitions in the Sr3Ru2O7 region of Sr3Ru2O7-Sr2RuO4 eutectic crystals

We report superconducting properties of Sr3Ru2O7-Sr2RuO4 eutectic crystals, consisting of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 with a monolayer stacking of RuO2 planes and the metamagnetic normal metal Sr3Ru2O7 with a bilayer stacking. Although Sr3Ru2O7 has not been reported to exhibit superconductivity so far, our AC susceptibility measurements revealed multiple superconducting transitions occurring in the Sr3Ru2O7 region of the eutectic crystals. The diamagnetic shielding essentially reached the full fraction at low AC fields parallel to the c axis. However, both the shielding fraction and the onset temperature are easily suppressed by AC fields of larger than 0.1 mT-rms and no anomaly was observed in the specific heat. Moreover, the critical field curves of these transitions have a positive curvature near zero fields, which is different from the upper critical field curve of the bulk Sr2RuO4. These facts suggest that the superconductivity observed in the Sr3Ru2O7 region is not a bulk property. To explain these experimental results, we propose the scenario that stacking RuO2 planes, the building block of superconducting Sr2RuO4, are contained in the Sr3Ru2O7 region as stacking faults.

Specific heat and electronic states of superconducting boron-doped silicon carbide

The discoveries of superconductivity in the heavily-boron doped semiconductors diamond (C:B) in 2004 and silicon (Si:B) in 2006 have renewed the interest in the physics of the superconducting state of doped semiconductors. Recently, we discovered superconductivity in the closely related ''mixed'' system heavily boron-doped silcon carbide (SiC:B). Interestingly, the latter compound is a type-I superconductor whereas the two aforementioned materials are type-II. In this paper we present an extensive analysis of our recent specific-heat study, as well as the band structure and expected Fermi surfaces. We observe an apparent quadratic temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state. Possible reasons are a nodal gap structure or a residual density of states due to non-superconducting parts of the sample. The basic superconducting parameters are estimated in a Ginzburg-Landau framework. We compare and discuss our results with those reported for C:B and Si:B. Finally, we comment on possible origins of the difference in the superconductivity of SiC:B compared to the two ''parent'' materials C:B and Si:B.

Anomalous In-Plane Anisotropy of the Onset of Superconductivity in (TMTSF)2ClO4

We report the magnetic field-amplitude and field-angle dependence of the superconducting onset temperature Tc_onset of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4 in magnetic fields H accurately aligned to the conductive ab' plane. We revealed that the rapid increase of the onset fields at low temperatures occurs both for H // b' and H // a, irrespective of the carrier confinement. Moreover, in the vicinity of the Pauli limiting field, we report a shift of a principal axis of the in-plane field-angle dependence of Tc_onset away from the b' axis. This feature may be related to an occurrence of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases.

Spin dynamics and spin freezing behavior in the two-dimensional antiferromagnet NiGa$_{2}$S$_{4}$ revealed by Ga-NMR, NQR and $μ$SR measurements

We have performed $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and muon spin rotation/resonance on the quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnet (AFM) NiGa$_2$S$_4$, in order to investigate its spin dynamics and magnetic state at low temperatures. Although there exists only one crystallographic site for Ga in NiGa$_2$S$_4$, we found two distinct Ga signals by NMR and NQR. The origin of the two Ga signals is not fully understood, but possibly due to stacking faults along the c axis which induce additional broad Ga NMR and NQR signals with different local symmetries. We found the novel spin freezing occurring at $T_{\rm f}$, at which the specific heat shows a maximum, from a clear divergent behavior of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ and nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate $1/T_{2}$ measured by Ga-NQR as well as the muon spin relaxation rate $λ$. The main sharp NQR peaks exhibit a stronger tendency of divergence, compared with the weak broader spectral peaks, indicating that the spin freezing is intrinsic in NiGa$_2$S$_4$. The behavior of these relaxation rates strongly suggests that the Ni spin fluctuations slow down towards $T_{\rm f}$, and the temperature range of the divergence is anomalously wider than that in a conventional magnetic ordering. A broad structureless spectrum and multi-component $T_1$ were observed below 2 K, indicating that a static magnetic state with incommensurate magnetic correlations or inhomogeneously distributed moments is realized at low temperatures. However, the wide temperature region between 2 K and $T_{\rm f}$, where the NQR signal was not observed, suggests that the Ni spins do not freeze immediately below $T_{\rm f}$, but keep fluctuating down to 2 K with the MHz frequency range.

Superconductivity in Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 eutectic crystals

Superconducting behavior has been observed in the Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 eutectic system as grown by the flux-feeding floating zone technique. A supercurrent flows across a single interface between Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 areas at distances that are far beyond those expected in a conventional proximity scenario. The current-voltage characteristics within the Sr3Ru2O7 macrodomain, as extracted from the eutectic, exhibit signatures of superconductivity in the bilayered ruthenate. Detailed microstructural, morphological and compositional analyses address issues on the concentration and the size of Sr2RuO4 inclusions within the Sr3Ru2O7 matrix. We speculate on the possibility of inhomogeneous superconductivity in the eutectic Sr3Ru2O7 and exotic pairing induced by the Sr2RuO4 inclusions.

Three-Dimensional Bulk Electronic Structures of Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 Studied by Soft X-ray Angle-Resolved Photoemission

We report on experimental data of the three-dimensional bulk Fermi surfaces of the layered strongly correlated Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 system. The measurements have been performed by means of hn-depndent bulk-sensitive soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission technique. Our experimental data evinces the bulk Fermi surface topology at kz~0 to be qualitatively different from the one observed by surface-sensitive low-energy ARPES. Furthermore, stronger kz dispersion of the circle-like gamma Fermi surface sheet is observed compared with Sr2RuO4. Thus in the paramagnetic metal phase, Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 compound is found to have rather three-dimensional electronic structure.

Unusual superexchange pathways in a Ni triangular lattice of NiGa$_2$S$_4$ with negative charge-transfer energy

We have studied the electronic structure of the Ni triangular lattice in NiGa$_2$S$_4$ using photoemission spectroscopy and subsequent model calculations. The cluster-model analysis of the Ni 2$p$ core-level spectrum shows that the S 3$p$ to Ni 3$d$ charge-transfer energy is $\sim$ -1 eV and the ground state is dominated by the $d^9L$ configuration ($L$ is a S 3$p$ hole). Cell perturbation analysis for the NiS$_2$ triangular lattice indicates that the strong S 3$p$ hole character of the ground state provides the enhanced superexchange interaction between the third nearest neighbor sites.

Upper limit on spontaneous supercurrents in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

It is widely believed that the perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is an unconventional superconductor with broken time reversal symmetry. It has been predicted that superconductors with broken time reversal symmetry should have spontaneously generated supercurrents at edges and domain walls. We have done careful imaging of the magnetic fields above Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ single crystals using scanning Hall bar and SQUID microscopies, and see no evidence for such spontaneously generated supercurrents. We use the results from our magnetic imaging to place upper limits on the spontaneously generated supercurrents at edges and domain walls as a function of domain size. For a single domain, this upper limit is below the predicted signal by two orders of magnitude. We speculate on the causes and implications of the lack of large spontaneous supercurrents in this very interesting superconducting system.

Field-induced paramagnons at the metamagnetic transition in Ca1.8Sr0.2RuO4

The magnetic excitations in Ca1.8Sr0.2RuO4 were studied across the metamagnetic transition and as a function of temperature using inelastic neutron scattering. At low temperature and low magnetic field the magnetic response is dominated by a complex superposition of incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Upon increasing the magnetic field across the metamagnetic ransition, paramagnon and finally well-defined magnon scattering is induced, partially suppressing the incommensurate signals. The high-field phase in Ca1.8Sr0.2RuO4 has, therefore, to be considered as an intrinsically ferromagnetic state stabilized by the magnetic field.

Lattice dynamics and electron-phonon coupling in Sr2RuO4

The lattice dynamics in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering combined with shell-model calculations. The in-plane bond-stretching modes in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ exhibit a normal dispersion in contrast to all electronically doped perovskites studied so far. Evidence for strong electron phonon coupling is found for c-polarized phonons suggesting a close connection with the anomalous c-axis charge transport in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Formation of a Nematic Fluid at High Fields in Sr3Ru2O7

In principle, a complex assembly of strongly interacting electrons can self-organise into a wide variety of collective states, but relatively few such states have been identified in practice. We report that, in the close vicinity of a metamagnetic quantum critical point, high purity Sr3Ru2O7 possesses a large magnetoresistive anisotropy, consistent with the existence of an electronic nematic fluid. We discuss a striking phenomenological similarity between our observations and those made in high purity two-dimensional electron fluids in GaAs devices.

Orbital Properties of Sr3Ru2O7 and Related Ruthenates Probed by 17O-NMR

We report a site-separated $^{17}$O-NMR study of the layered perovskite ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, which exhibits nearly two-dimensional transport properties and itinerant metamagnetism at low temperatures. The local hole occupancies and the spin densities in the oxygen $2p$ orbitals are obtained by means of tight-binding analyses of electric field gradients and anisotropic Knight shifts. These quantities are compared with two other layered perovskite ruthenates: the two-dimensional paramagnet Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and the three-dimensional ferromagnet SrRuO$_3$. The hole occupancies at the oxygen sites are very large, about one hole per ruthenium atom. This is due to the strong covalent character of the Ru-O bonding in this compound. The magnitude of the hole occupancy might be related to the rotation or tilt of the RuO$_6$ octahedra. The spin densities at the oxygen sites are also large, 20-40% of the bulk susceptibilities, but in contrast to the hole occupancies, the spin densities strongly depend on the dimensionality. This result suggests that the density-of-states at the oxygen sites plays an essential role for the understanding of the complex magnetism found in the layered perovskite ruthenates.

Magnetoelastic coupling across the metamagnetic transition in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ (0.2 < x < 0.5)

The magnetoelastic coupling in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ and in Ca$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$RuO$_4$ has been studied combining high-resolution dilatometer and diffraction techniques. Both compounds exhibit strong anomalies in the thermal-expansion coefficient at zero and at high magnetic field as well as an exceptionally large magnetostriction. All these structural effects, which are strongest in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$, point to a redistribution of electrons between the different $t_{2g}$ orbitals tuned by temperature and magnetic field. The temperature and the field dependence of the thermal-expansion anomalies in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ yield evidence for a critical end-point lying close to the low-temperature metamagnetic transition; however, the expected scaling relations are not well fulfilled.

Spectroscopy of SrRuO/Ru Junctions in Eutectic

We have investigated the tunnelling properties of the interface between superconducting Sr2RuO4 and a single Ru inclusion in eutectic. By using a micro-fabrication technique, we have made Sr2RuO4/Ru junctions on the eutectic system that consists of Sr2RuO4 and Ru micro-inclusions. Such a eutectic system exhibits surface superconductivity, called the 3-K phase. A zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) was observed in the 3-K phase. We propose to use the onset of the ZBCP to delineate the phase boundary of a time-reversal symmetry breaking state.

Thermal conductivity in the vicinity of the quantum critical endpoint in Sr3Ru2O7

Thermal conductivity of Sr3Ru2O7 was measured down to 40 mK and at magnetic fields through the quantum critical endpoint at H_c = 7.85 T. A peak in the electrical resistivity as a function of field was mimicked by the thermal resistivity. In the limit as T -> 0 K we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is satisfied to within 5% at all fields, implying that there is no breakdown of the electron despite the destruction of the Fermi liquid state at quantum criticality. A significant change in disorder (from $ρ_0$(H=0T) = 2.1 $μΩ$ cm to 0.5 $μΩ$ cm) does not influence our conclusions. At finite temperatures, the temperature dependence of the Lorenz number is consistent with ferromagnetic fluctuations causing the non-Fermi liquid behavior as one would expect at a metamagnetic quantum critical endpoint.

Observation of a mixed pairing state in Ru microdomains embedded in $Sr_2 Ru O_4$

We report first measurements on tunneling into the {\it interior} of a Ru microdomain embedded in bulk chiral p-wave superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. The junctions were prepared by pressing a pure In wire onto the ${\it{ab}}$ face of a Ru-containing Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ single crystal. Below the superconducting transition temperature ($T_{c}$) of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ (= 1.5 K), we observed a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) associated with the proximity-induced p-wave superconductivity. However, below 0.44 K, roughly the $T_{c}$ of bulk Ru (= 0.5 K), an unexpected Ru gap and a broad ZBCP superimposed with subgap features were found to emerge, with unusual magnetic field dependences. We argue that the new features resulted from a mixed pairing state featuring intrinsic ${\it{s}}$- and ${\it{p}}$-wave condensates in the interior of a Ru microdomain embedded in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$.

Electronic structures of layered perovskite Sr2MO4 (M=Ru, Rh, and Ir)

We investigated the electronic structures of the two-dimensional layered perovskite Sr$_{2}$\textit{M}O$_{4}$ (\textit{M}=4\textit{d} Ru, 4\textit{d} Rh, and 5\textit{d} Ir) using optical spectroscopy and polarization-dependent O 1\textit{s} x-ray absorption spectroscopy. While the ground states of the series of compounds are rather different, their optical conductivity spectra $σ(ω)$ exhibit similar interband transitions, indicative of the common electronic structures of the 4\textit{d} and 5\textit{d} layered oxides. The energy splittings between the two $e_{g}$ orbitals, $i.e.$, $d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ and $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$, are about 2 eV, which is much larger than those in the pseudocubic and 3\textit{d} layered perovskite oxides. The electronic properties of the Sr$_{2}$\textit{M}O$_{4}$ compounds are discussed in terms of the crystal structure and the extended character of the 4\textit{d} and 5\textit{d} orbitals.

Properties of the Nearly Free Electron Superconductor Ag5Pb2O6 Inferred from Fermi Surface Measurements

We measured the Fermi surface of the recently discovered superconductor Ag5Pb2O6 via a de Haas-van Alphen rotation study. Two frequency branches were observed and identified with the neck and belly orbits of a very simple, nearly free electron Fermi surface. We use the observed Fermi surface geometry to quantitatively deduce superconducting properties such as the in-plane and out-of-plane penetration depths, the coherence length in the clean limit, and the critical field; as well as normal state properties such as the specific heat and the resistivity anisotropy.
