Multiple first-order metamagnetic transitions and quantum oscillations in ultrapure

We present measurements on ultra clean single crystals of the bilayered ruthenate metal Sr3Ru2O7, which has a magnetic-field-tuned quantum critical point. Quantum oscillations of differing frequencies can be seen in the resistivity both below and above its metamagnetic transition. This frequency shift corresponds to a small change in the Fermi surface volume that is qualitatively consistent with the small moment change in the magnetisation across the metamagnetic transition. Very near the metamagnetic field, unusual behaviour is seen. There is a strong enhancement of the resistivity in a narrow field window, with a minimum in the resistivity as a function of temperature below 1 K that becomes more pronounced as the disorder level decreases. The region of anomalous behaviour is bounded at low temperatures by two first-order phase transitions. The implications of the results are discussed. PACS: 68.35.Rh, 71.27.+a, 72.15.-v, 74.70.Pq

Strongly Enhanced Magnetic Fluctuations in a Heavy-mass Layered Ruthenate

We have studied the magnetic excitations in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$, x=0.52 and 0.62, which exhibit an anomalous high susceptibility and heavy mass Fermi liquid behavior. Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal strongly enhanced magnetic fluctuations around an incommensurate wave vector (0.22,0,0) pointing to a magnetic instability. The magnetic fluctuations show no correlation in c-direction and also along the RuO$_2$-planes the signal is extremely broad, $Δq =0.45$ Å$^{-1}$. These fluctuations can quantitatively account for the high specific heat coefficient and relate to the high macroscopic susceptibility. The magnetic scattering is attributed to the $γ$-band, the active band for spin triplet superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Unconventional Superconductivity and Nearly Ferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in Na$_x$CoO$_2$$\cdot y$H$_2$O

Co NQR studies were performed in recently discovered superconductor Na$_x$CoO$_2$$\cdot y$H$_2$O to investigate physical properties in the superconducting (SC) and normal states. Two samples from the same Na$_x$CoO$_2$ were examined, SC bilayer-hydrate sample with $T_c \sim 4.7$ K and non-SC monolayer-hydrate sample. From the measurement of nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in the SC sample, it was found that the coherence peak is absent just below $T_c$ and that $1/T_1$ is proportional to temperature far below $T_c$. These results, which are in qualitatively agreement with the previous result by Fujimoto {\it et al.}, suggest strongly that unconventional superconductivity is realized in this compound. In the normal state, $1/T_1T$ of the SC sample shows gradual increase below 100K down to $T_c$, whereas $1/T_1T$ of the non-SC sample shows the Korringa behavior in this temperature range. From the comparison between $1/T_1T$ and $χ_{\rm bulk}$ in the SC sample, the increase of $1/T_1T$ is attributed to nearly ferromagnetic fluctuations. These remarkable findings suggest that the SC sample possesses nearly ferromagnetic fluctuations, which are possibly related with the unconventional superconductivity in this compound. The implication of this finding is discussed.

Anisotropy of the incommensurate fluctuations in Sr2RuO4: a study with polarized neutrons

The anisotropy of the magnetic incommensurate fluctuations in Sr2RuO4 has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering with polarized neutrons. We find a sizeable enhancement of the out of plane component by a factor of two for intermediate energy transfer which appears to decrease for higher energies. Our results qualitatively confirm calculations of the spin-orbit coupling, but the experimental anisotropy and its energy dependence are weaker than predicted.

Raman scattering studies of spin, charge, and lattice dynamics in Ca_{2-x}Sr_{x}RuO_{4} (0 =< x < 0.2)

We use Raman scattering to study spin, charge, and lattice dynamics in various phases of Ca_{2-x}Sr_{x}RuO_{4}. With increasing substitution of Ca by Sr in the range 0 =< x < 0.2, we observe (1) evidence for an increase of the electron-phonon interaction strength, (2) an increased temperature-dependence of the two-magnon energy and linewidth in the antiferromagnetic insulating phase, and (3) evidence for charge gap development, and hysteresis associated with the structural phase change, both of which are indicative of a first-order metal-insulator transition (T_{MI}) and a coexistence of metallic and insulating components for T < T_{MI}.

Angular dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in the itinerant metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7

We report the results of a study of the di erential magnetic susceptibility of Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature and magnetic elds applied at a series of angles to the ab plane. By analysing the real and imaginary parts of the susceptibility, we conclude that the eld angle acts as a continuous tuning parameter for the critical end-point to a line of rst order metamagnetic phase transitions. The end-point sits at approximately 1.25K for elds applied in the ab plane, and is depressed to below 50 mK when the eld is aligned within 10 of the c axis.

Electron and orbital correlations in Ca_{2-x}Sr_{x}RuO_{4} probed by optical spectroscopy

The doping and temperature dependent optical conductivity spectra of the quasi-two-dimensional Ca_{2-x}Sr_xRuO_4 (0.0=<x=<2.0) system were investigated. In the Mott insulating state, two electron correlation-induced peaks were observed around 1.0 and 1.9 eV, which could be understood in terms of the 3-orbital Hubbard model. The low frequency peak showed a shift toward higher frequency as temperature was lowered, which indicated that electron-phonon interactions play an important role in the orbital arrangements. From the systematic analysis, it was suggested that the antiferro-orbital and the ferro-orbital ordering states could coexist.

Quasi-particle Density in Sr2RuO4 Probed by means of the Phonon Thermal Conductivity

The thermal conductivity of Sr2RuO4 along the least conducting direction perpendicular to the RuO2 plane has been studied down to 0.3 K. In this configuration the phonons remain the dominant heat carriers down to the lowest temperature, and their conductivity in the normal state is determined by the scattering on conduction electrons. We show that the phonon mean free path in the superconducting state is sensitive to the density of the quasi-particles in the bulk. An unusual magnetic field dependence of the phonon thermal conductivity is ascribed to the anisotropic superconducting gap structure in Sr2RuO4.

Universal Heat Transport in Sr2RuO4

We present the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity kappa(T) of the unconventional superconductor Sr_2RuO_4 down to low temperatures (100 mK). In T -> 0 K limit we found a finite residual term in kappa/T, providing clear evidence for the superconducting state with an unconventional pairing. The residual term remains unchanged for samples with different T_c, demonstrating the universal character of heat transport in this spin-triplet superconductor. The low-temperature behavior of kappa suggests the strong impurity scattering with a phase shift close to pi/2. A criterion for the observation of universality is experimentally deduced.

Pressure-Tuned Collapse of the Mott-Like State in Ca_{n+1}Ru_nO_{3n+1} (n=1,2): Raman Spectroscopic Studies

We report a Raman scattering study of the pressure-induced collapse of the Mott-like phases of Ca_3Ru_2O_7 (T_N=56 K) and Ca_2RuO_4 (T_N=110 K). The pressure-dependence of the phonon and two-magnon excitations in these materials indicate: (i) a pressure-induced collapse of the antiferromagnetic (AF) insulating phase above P* ~ 55 kbar in Ca_3Ru_2O_7 and P* ~ 5-10 kbar in Ca_2RuO_4, reflecting the importance of Ru-O octahedral distortions in stabilizing the AF insulating phase; and (ii) evidence for persistent AF correlations above the critical pressure of Ca_2RuO_4, suggestive of phase separation involving AF insulator and ferromagnetic metal phases.

Critical end-point and metamagnetic quantum criticality in Sr3Ru2O7

We report a metamagnetic critical point at (B*,T*)=(5.1T,1.1K) for magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the (tetragonal) c-axis of Sr3Ru2O7. First-order behaviour well below T* indicates that (B*,T*) marks a critical end-point that terminates a line of first-order metamagnetic transitions. The absence of first-order behaviour in the metamagnetic transition with B||c confirms that the non-Fermi liquid behaviour for B||c is underpinned by a metamagnetic quantum critical end-point for which T*->0. Scaling behaviour of the resistivity under hydrostatic pressure yields the surprising result that although B* increases rapidly with pressure, T* has only a weak pressure dependence.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

Magnetic excitations in \srruo ~ have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering. The magnetic fluctuations are dominated by incommensurate peaks related to the Fermi surface nesting of the quasi-one-dimensional $d_{xz}$- and $d_{yz}$-bands. The shape of the incommensurate signal agrees well with RPA calculations. At the incommensurate {\bf Q}-positions the energy spectrum considerably softens upon cooling pointing to a close magnetic instability : \srruo ~does not exhibit quantum criticality but is very close to it. $ω/ T$-scaling may be fitted to the data for temperatures above 30 K. Below the superconducting transition, the magnetic response at the nesting signal is not found to change in the energy range down to 0.4meV.

Anomalous spin density distribution on oxygen and Ru in Ca$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$RuO$_4$: A polarised neutron diffraction study

By means of polarized neutron diffraction in a magnetic field of 7.0 T at 1.6 K an anomalously large magnetization density is observed on the in-plane oxygen in Ca$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$RuO$_4$. Field-induced moments of different ions are determined by refinement on the flipping ratios, yielding $μ$$_{Ru}$ = 0.346(11) $μ$$_B$, $μ_{O1}$ = 0.076(6) $μ$$_B$ and $μ_{O2}$ = 0.009(6) $μ$$_B$. The moment on the oxygen arises from the strong hybridization between the Ru-4d and O-2p orbitals. %The maximum entropy method is used for the %reconstruction of the magnetization density and reveals a strongly anisotropic The maximum entropy magnetization density reconstruction reveals a strongly anisotropic density at the Ru site, consistent with the distribution of the {\it xy} ($t_{2g}$ band) {\it d}-orbitals.

Elastic Tensor of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

The six independent elastic constants of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ were determined using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy on a high-quality single-crystal specimen. The constants are in excellent agreement with those obtained from pulse-echo experiments performed on a sample cut from the same ingot. A calculation of the Debye temperature using the measured constants agrees well with values obtained from both specific heat and Mössbauer measurements.

Observation of Two-dimensional Spin Fluctuations in the Bilayer Ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7 by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

We report the first observation of two-dimensional incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in the layered metallic perovskite Sr3Ru2O7. The wavevectors where the magnetic fluctuations are strongest are different from those observed in the superconducting single layer ruthenate Sr2RuO4 and appear to be determined by Fermi surface nesting. No antiferromagnetic ordering is observed for temperatures down to 1.5K. For temperatures T<20K, the fluctuations become predominately ferromagnetic. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements provide concrete evidence of the coexistence of competing interactions in Sr3Ru2O7 and of the low energy scale of the fluctuations.

Cyclotron resonance in the layered perovskite superconductor Sr2RuO4

We report a detailed study of the magnetic-field-orientation dependence of the millimetre-wave magnetoconductivity of the superconductor Sr2RuO4 We find two harmonic series of cyclotron resonances. We assign the first, corresponding to a quasiparticle mass of $4.29 \pm 0.05 m_{\rm e}$, where $m_{\rm e}$ is the free-electron mass, to the $β$ Fermi-surface section. We assign the second series, which contains only odd harmonics, to cyclotron resonance of the $γ$ Fermi-surface section, yielding a quasiparticle mass of $12.35 \pm 0.20 m_{\rm e}$. A third, single cyclotron resonance, corresponding to a quasiparticle mass of $5.60 \pm 0.03 m_{\rm e}$, is attributed to the $α$ Fermi-surface section. In addition, we find a very strong absorption mode in the presence of a magnetic field component parallel to the quasi-two-dimensional planes of the sample. Its dependence on the orientation of the magnetic field cannot be described in the context of conventional cyclotron resonance, and the origin of this mode is not yet clear.

Magnetic anisotropy of the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7

We report magnetization and ac susceptibility of single crystals of the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7. Saturated moments at 1.8 K along the charasteristic axes [100] and [110] agree with the expected values for an effective ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor Ising pyrochlore with local <111> anisotropy, where each magnetic moment is constrained to obey the `ice-rule'. At high enough magnetic fields along the [111] axis, the saturated moment exhibits a beaking of the ice-rule; it agrees with the value expected for a three-in one-out spin configuration. Assuming the realistic magnetic interaction between Dy ions given by the dipolar spin ice model, we completely reproduce the results at 2 K by Monte Carlo calculations. However, down to at least 60 mK, we have not found any experimental evidence of the long-range magnetic ordering predicted by this model to occur at around 180 mK. Instead, we confirm the spin freezing of the system below 0.5 K.
