Abrupt recovery of Fermi-liquid transport by the c-axis collapse in CaFe2(As1-xPx)2 single crystals

Single crystals of CaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ are found to exhibit the tetragonal (T) to collapsed-tetragonal (cT) transition at $T_{\rm cT} \lesssim100$\,K for $x>0.05$. The c-axis shrinks by $\sim9$% below $T_{\rm cT}$, which substantially diminishes the interband nesting between the hole and electron bands. In sharp contrast to the superconducting T phase of $A$Fe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ ($A=$ Ba, Sr), where the anomalous non-Fermi liquid transport properties are observed, the resistivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetoresistance data in the Ca-based system all indicate that the standard Fermi liquid behaviors are recovered abruptly below $T_{\rm cT}$, and the superconductivity disappears completely. The intimate link between the superconductivity and the non-Fermi liquid transport enlightens the essential role of interband-associated fluctuation effects in Fe-pnictides.

Ly alpha emissters at z=6.5 in the SSA22 field: An area more neutral or void at the end of the reionization epoch

We present results of a survey of Lyman $α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=6.5$ which is thought to be the final epoch of the cosmic reionization. In a $\approx530$ arcmin$^2$ deep image of the SSA22 field taken through a narrowband filter NB912 installed in the Subaru/Suprime-Cam, we have found only 14 LAE candidates with $L_{\rm Lyα}\ga3\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Even applying the same colour selection criteria, the number density of the LAE candidates is a factor of 3 smaller than that found at the same redshift in the Subaru Deep field (SDF). Assuming the number density in the SDF is a cosmic average, the probability to have a number density equal to or smaller than that found in the SSA22 field is only 7% if we consider fluctuation by the large-scale structure (i.e. cosmic variance) and Poisson error. Therefore, the SSA22 field may be a rare void at $z=6.5$. On the other hand, we have found that the number density of $i'$-drop galaxies with $25.5<z'<26.0$ in the SSA22 field agrees well with that in the SDF. If we consider a scenario that a larger neutral fraction of intergalactic hydrogen, $x_{\rm HI}$, in the SSA22 field obscures a part of Ly$α$ emission, $x_{\rm HI}$ in the SSA22 field should be about 2 times larger than that in the SDF. This can be translated into $x_{\rm HI}<0.9$ at $z=6.5$ in the SSA22 field. A much larger survey area than previous ones is required to overcome a large fluctuation reported here and to obtain a robust constraint on $x_{\rm HI}$ at the end of the reionization from LAEs.

The Subaru Ly-alpha blob survey: A sample of 100 kpc Ly-alpha blobs at z=3

We present results of a survey for giant Ly-alpha nebulae (LABs) at z=3 with Subaru/Suprime-Cam. We obtained Ly-alpha imaging at z=3.09+-0.03 around the SSA22 protocluster and in several blank fields. The total survey area is 2.1 square degrees, corresponding to a comoving volume of 1.6 x 10^6 Mpc^3. Using a uniform detection threshold of 1.4 x 10^{-18} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} arcsec^{-2} for the Ly-alpha images, we construct a sample of 14 LAB candidates with major-axis diameters larger than 100 kpc, including five previously known blobs and two known quasars. This survey triples the number of known LABs over 100 kpc. The giant LAB sample shows a possible "morphology-density relation": filamentary LABs reside in average density environments as derived from compact Ly-alpha emitters, while circular LABs reside in both average density and overdense environments. Although it is hard to examine the formation mechanisms of LABs only from the Ly-alpha morphologies, more filamentary LABs may relate to cold gas accretion from the surrounding inter-galactic medium (IGM) and more circular LABs may relate to large-scale gas outflows, which are driven by intense starbursts and/or by AGN activities. Our survey highlights the potential usefulness of giant LABs to investigate the interactions between galaxies and the surrounding IGM from the field to overdense environments at high-redshift.

Lyman `bump' galaxies - II. A possible signature of massive extremely metal-poor or metal-free stars in z=3.1 Ly-alpha emitters

(Abridged) Deep NB359 imaging with Subaru by Iwata et al. have detected surprisingly strong Lyman continuum (LyC; ~900A in the rest-frame) from some LAEs at z=3.1. However, the redshifts might be misidentified due to a narrow wavelength coverage in previous spectroscopy. We here present new deep spectroscopy covering the observed 4,000-7,000A with VLT/VIMOS and Subaru/FOCAS of 8 LAEs detected in NB359. All the 8 objects have only one detectable emission line around 4,970A which is most likely to be Ly-A at z=3.1, and thus, the objects are certainly LAEs at the redshift. However, 5 of them show a ~0.''8 spatial offset between the Ly-A emission and the source detected in NB359. No indications of the redshifts of the NB359 sources are found although it is statistically difficult that all the 5 LAEs have a foreground object accounting for the NB359 flux. The rest 3 LAEs show no significant offset from the NB359 position. Therefore, they are truly LyC emitting LAEs at z=3.1. We also examine the stellar population which simultaneously accounts for the strength of the LyC and the spectral slope of non-ionizing ultraviolet of the LAEs. We consider the latest statistics of Lyman limit systems to estimate the LyC optical depth in the IGM and an additional contribution of the bound-free LyC from photo-ionized nebulae to the LyC emissivity. As a result, we find that stellar populations with metallicity Z>=1/50Z_sun can explain the observed LyC strength only with a very top-heavy initial mass function (IMF; ~50 M_sun). However, the critical metallicity for such an IMF is expected to be much lower. A very young (~1 Myr) and massive (~100 M_sun) extremely metal-poor (Z<=5e-4Z_sun) or metal-free (so-called Population III) stellar population can reproduce the observed LyC strength. The required mass fraction of such `primordial' stellar population is ~1--10% in total stellar mass of the LAEs.

Submillimeter Array Identification of the Millimeter-Selected Galaxy SSA22-AzTEC1: A Protoquasar in a Protocluster?

We present results from Submillimeter Array (SMA) 860-micron sub-arcsec astrometry and multiwavelength observations of the brightest millimeter (S_1.1mm = 8.4 mJy) source, SSA22-AzTEC1, found near the core of the SSA22 protocluster that is traced by Lyαemitting galaxies at z = 3.09. We identify a 860-micron counterpart with a flux density of S_860um = 12.2 +/- 2.3 mJy and absolute positional accuracy that is better than 0.3". At the SMA position, we find radio to mid-infrared counterparts, whilst no object is found in Subaru optical and near-infrared deep images at wavelengths \le 1 micron (J > 25.4 in AB, 2σ). The photometric redshift estimate, using flux densities at \ge 24 microns, indicates z_phot = 3.19^{+0.26}_{-0.35}, consistent with the protocluster redshift. We then model the near-to-mid-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of SSA22-AzTEC1, and find that the SED modeling requires a large extinction (A_V \approx 3.4 mag) of starlight from a stellar component with M_star ~ 10^{10.9} M_sun, assuming z = 3.1. Additionally, we find a significant X-ray counterpart with a very hard spectrum (Gamma_eff = -0.34 ^{+0.57}_{-0.61}), strongly suggesting that SSA22-AzTEC1 harbors a luminous AGN (L_X ~ 3*10^{44} ergs s^{-1}) behind a large hydrogen column (N_H ~ 10^{24} cm^{-2}). The AGN, however, is responsible for only ~10% of the bolometric luminosity of the host galaxy, and therefore the star-formation activity likely dominates the submillimeter emission. It is possible that SSA22-AzTEC1 is the first example of a protoquasar growing at the bottom of the gravitational potential underlying the SSA22 protocluster.

Three- and four-nucleon absorption processes observed in the $K^-$-$^4$He reaction at rest

Correlations of back-to-back coincident $Λd$ and $Λt$ pairs from the stopped $K^-$ reaction on $^4$He had been investigated, thereby $Λd$ and $Λt$ branches of non-mesonic three- and four-nucleon absorption processes of antikaon at rest were identified as well-separable processes, respectively. The branching ratio of the three-nucleon process, ($^4$He-$K^-$)$_{atomic} \rightarrow Λd "n"$, is estimated to be $(0.9 \pm 0.1 (stat) \pm 0.2 (syst)) \times 10^{-3}$ from the normalized $Λd$ spectrum in a $Λd n$ final state, while the fraction of the four-nucleon process, ($^4$He-$K^-$)$_{atomic} \rightarrow Λt$, is obtained to be $(3.1 \pm 0.4 (stat) \pm 0.5 (syst)) \times 10^{-4}$ per stopped $K^-$.

Unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetic quantum critical behavior in the isovalent-doped BaFe2(As1-xPx)2

Spin dynamics evolution of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ was probed as a function of P concentration via $^{31}$P NMR. Our NMR study reveals that two-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations are notably enhanced with little change in static susceptibility on approaching the AF phase from the superconducting dome. Moreover, magnetically ordered temperature $θ$ deduced from the relaxation rate vanishes at optimal doping. These results provide clear-cut evidence for a quantum-critical point (QCP), suggesting that the AF fluctuations associated with the QCP play a central role in the high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Anisotropic Superconducting Properties of Optimally Doped BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.65}$P$_{0.35}$)$_2$ under Pressure

Magnetic measurements on optimally doped single crystals of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ ($x\approx0.35$) with magnetic fields applied along different crystallographic axes were performed under pressure, enabling the pressure evolution of coherence lengths and the anisotropy factor to be followed. Despite a decrease in the superconducting critical temperature, our studies reveal that the superconducting properties become more anisotropic under pressure. With appropriate scaling, we directly compare these properties with the values obtained for BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ as a function of phosphorus content.

Two- and Three-Dimensional Fermi Surfaces and their Nesting Properties in Superconducting BaFe2(As1-xPx)2

We have studied the three-dimensional shapes of the Fermi surfaces (FSs) of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (x=0.38), where superconductivity is induced by isovalent P substitution, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Moderately strong electron mass enhancement has been identified for both the electron and hole FSs. Among two observed hole FSs, the nearly two-dimensional one shows good nesting with the outer two-dimensional electron FS, but its orbital character is different from the outer electron FS. The three-dimensional hole FS shows poor nesting with the electron FSs. The present results suggest that the three-dimensionality and the difference in the orbital character weaken FS nesting, leaving partial nesting among the outer electron FSs of dxy character and/or that within the three-dimensional hole FS, which may lead to the nodal superconductivity.

Anomalous Temperature Dependence of Lower Critical Field in Ultraclean URu$_2$Si$_2$

To investigate a mysterious superconducting state of URu_2Si_2 embedded in the so-called hidden order state, the lower critical field H_{c1} is precisely determined down to 55 mK for H || a and H || c. For this purpose, the positional dependence of the local magnetic induction is measured on ultraclean single crystals (T_c = 1.4 K) with residual resistivity ratio exceeding 700. We find that the temperature dependence of H_{c1} significantly differs from that of any other superconductors. The whole H_{c1}(T) for H || a are well explained by the two superconducting gap structures with line and point nodes, which have been suggested by the recent thermal conductivity and specific heat measurements. On the other hand, for H || c, a change of slope with a distinct kink in H_{c1}(T), which cannot be accounted for by two gaps, is observed. This behavior for H || c sharply contrasts with the cusp behavior of H_{c1}(T) associated with a transition into another superconducting phase found in UPt_3 and U_{1-x}Th_xBe_{13}. The observed anomalous low-field diamagnetic response is possibly related to a peculiar vortex dynamics associated with chiral domains due to the multicomponent superconducting order parameter with broken time reversal symmetry.

Evidence for superconducting gap nodes in the zone-centered hole bands of KFe2As2 from magnetic penetration-depth measurements

Among the iron-based pnictide superconductors the material KFe$_2$As$_2$ is unusual in that its Fermi surface does not consist of quasi-nested electron and hole pockets. Here we report measurements of the temperature dependent London penetration depth of very clean crystals of this compound with residual resistivity ratio $>1200$. We show that the superfluid density at low temperatures exhibits a strong linear-in-temperature dependence which implies that there are line nodes in the energy gap on the large zone-centered hole sheets. The results indicate that KFe$_2$As$_2$ is an unconventional superconductor with strong electron correlations.

Specific Heat vs Field in the 30 K Superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2

We report specific heat measurements on the Fe-based superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2, a material on which previous penetration depth, NMR, and thermal conductivity measurements have observed a high density of low-energy excitations, which have been interpreted in terms of order parameter nodes. Within the resolution of our measurements, the low temperature limiting C/T is found to be linear in field, i.e. we find no evidence for a Volovik effect associated with nodal quasiparticles in either the clean or dirty limit. We discuss possible reasons for this apparent contradiction.

Line nodes in the energy gap of high-temperature superconducting BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 from penetration depth and thermal conductivity measurements

We report magnetic penetration depth and thermal conductivity data for high-quality single crystals of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ ($T_c=30$\,K) which provide strong evidence that this material has line nodes in its energy gap. This is distinctly different from the nodeless gap found for (Ba,K)Fe$_2$As$_2$ which has similar $T_c$ and phase diagram. Our results indicate that repulsive electronic interactions play an essential role for Fe-based high-$T_c$ superconductivity but that uniquely there are distinctly different pairing states, with and without nodes, which have comparable $T_c$.

Flux pinning in (1111) iron-pnictide superconducting crystals

Local magnetic measurements are used to quantitatively characterize heterogeneity and flux line pinning in PrFeAsO_1-y and NdFeAs(O,F) superconducting single crystals. In spite of spatial fluctuations of the critical current density on the macroscopic scale, it is shown that the major contribution comes from collective pinning of vortex lines by microscopic defects by the mean-free path fluctuation mechanism. The defect density extracted from experiment corresponds to the dopant atom density, which means that dopant atoms play an important role both in vortex pinning and in quasiparticle scattering. In the studied underdoped PrFeAsO_1-y and NdFeAs(O,F) crystals, there is a background of strong pinning, which we attribute to spatial variations of the dopant atom density on the scale of a few dozen to one hundred nm. These variations do not go beyond 5% - we therefore do not find any evidence for coexistence of the superconducting and the antiferromagnetic phase. The critical current density in sub-T fields is characterized by the presence of a peak effect, the location of which in the (B,T)-plane is consistent with an order-disorder transition of the vortex lattice.

Evolution from Non-Fermi to Fermi Liquid Transport Properties by Isovalent Doping in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 Superconductors

The normal-state charge transport is studied systematically in high-quality single crystals of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.71$). By substituting isovalent P for As, the spin-density-wave (SDW) state is suppressed and the dome-shaped superconducting phase ($T_c \lesssim 31$ K) appears. Near the SDW end point ($x\approx0.3$), we observe striking linear temperature ($T$) dependence of resistivity in a wide $T$-range, and remarkable low-$T$ enhancement of Hall coefficient magnitude from the carrier number estimates. We also find that the magnetoresistance apparently violates the Kohler's rule and is well scaled by the Hall angle $Θ_H$ as $Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx} \propto \tan^2Θ_H$. These non-Fermi liquid transport anomalies cannot be attributed to the simple multiband effects. These results capture universal features of correlated electron systems in the presence of strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations.

A search for galaxies in and around an HI overdense region at z=5

We present the discovery of a large-scale structure of emission-line galaxies at redshift z=4.86 behind a massive cluster of galaxies, A1689. Previous spectroscopic observations of a galaxy, A1689-7.1 at z=4.87, near this structure, revealed a possible overdense region of inter-galactic medium (IGM) around the galaxy, which extends at least ~80 comoving Mpc along the line of sight. In order to investigate whether this z~5 IGM overdense region contains a galaxy overdensity, we undertook narrow- and broad-band imaging observations around A1689-7.1 with Subaru/Suprime-Cam. We detected 51 candidate Ly-alpha emitters at redshift z=4.86+-0.03 in the 32 x 24 arcmin^2 field of view. After correction for lensing by the foreground cluster, we found a large-scale (~20 x 60 comoving Mpc) overdense region of galaxies around A1689-7.1 in the source plane at z=4.86. The densest peak in this region has an overdensity of delta~4, suggesting that this structure is probably a good candidate for a protocluster. A1689-7.1 is located at the edge of this region, where the local galaxy density is ~1.6 times the mean density and is close to the density contrast in the IGM along the line of sight to A1689-7.1 estimated from the optical depth. The overdensities of galaxies we have found may suggest that at least some parts of the IGM overdense region have already started to form galaxies and moreover they relate to the formation of a protocluster. Although we lack information on the three dimensional distributions of both IGM and galaxy overdense regions, the similarity of the scales of both regions may suggest that the two are parts of a single large-scale structure, which would be an large edge-on sheet along the line of sight with a size of ~20 x 60 x 80 comoving Mpc.

Evolution of the Fermi surface of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 on entering the superconducting dome

Using the de Haas-van Alphen effect we have measured the evolution of the Fermi surface of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 as function of isoelectric substitution (As/P) for 0.41<x<1 (T_c up to 25 K). We find that the volume of electron and hole Fermi surfaces shrink linearly with decreasing x. This shrinking is accompanied by a strong increase in the quasiparticle effective mass as x is tuned toward the maximum T_c. It is likely that these trends originate from the many-body interaction which give rise to superconductivity, rather than the underlying one-electron bandstructure.

Lyman-alpha Blobs Like Company : The Discovery of A Candidate 100 kpc Lyman-alpha Blob Near to A Radio Galaxy with A Giant Lyman-alpha halo, B3 J2330+3927 at z=3.1

We present the discovery of a candidate of giant radio-quiet Lyman-alpha (Lya) blob (RQLAB) in a large-scale structure around a high-redshift radio galaxy (HzRG) lying in a giant Lya halo, B3 J2330+3927 at redshift z=3.087. We obtained Lya imaging around B3 J2330+3927 with Subaru/Suprime-Cam to search for Lya emitters (LAEs) and absorbers (LAAs) at redshift z=3.09+-0.03. We detected candidate 127 LAEs and 26 LAAs in the field of view of 31' x 24'. We found that B3 J2330+3927 is surrounded by a 130 kpc Lya halo and a large-scale (60 x 20 comoving Mpc) filamentary structure. The large-scale structure contains one prominent local density peak with an overdensity of greater than 5, which is 8' (15 comoving Mpc) away from B3 J2330+3927. In this peak, we discovered a candidate 100 kpc RQLAB. The existence of both types of Lya nebulae in the same large-scale structure suggests that giant Lya nebulae need special large-scale environments to form. On smaller scales, however, the location of B3 J2330+3927 is not a significant local density peak in this structure, in contrast to the RQLAB. There are two possible interpretations of the difference of the local environments of these two Lya nebulae. Firstly, RQLAB may need a prominent (delta ~ 5) density peak of galaxies to form through intense star-bursts due to frequent galaxy interactions/mergers and/or continuous gas accretion in an overdense environment. On the other hand, Lya halo around HzRG may not always need a prominent density peak to form if the surrounding Lya halo is mainly powered by its radio and AGN activities. Alternatively, both RQLAB and Lya halo around HzRG may need prominent density peaks to form but we could not completely trace the density of galaxies because we missed evolved and dusty galaxies in this survey.
