Cluster physics from joint weak gravitational lensing and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich data

We present a self consistent method to perfom a joint analysis of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich and weak gravitational lensing observation of galaxy clusters. The spatial distribution of the cluster main constituents is described by a perturbative approach. Assuming the hydrostatic equilibrium and the equation of state, we are able to deduce, from observations, maps of projected gas density and gas temperature. The method then naturally entails a X-ray emissivity prediction which can be compared to observed X-ray emissivity maps. When tested on simulated clusters (noise free), this prediction turns out to be in very good agreement with the simulated surface brightness. The simulated and predicted surface brightness images have a correlation coefficient higher than 0.9 and the total flux differ by 0.9 % or 9 % in the two simulated clusters we studied. The method should be easily used on real data in order to provide a physical description of the cluster physics and of its constituents. The tests performed show that we can recover the amount and the spatial distributions of both the baryonic and non-baryonic material with an accuracy better than 10 %. So, in principle, in it might indeed help to alleviate some well known bias affecting, eg baryon fraction measurements.

Cosmic Shear Statistics and Cosmology

We report a measurement of cosmic shear correlations using an effective area of 6.5 sq. deg. of the VIRMOS deep imaging survey in progress at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We measured various shear correlation functions, the aperture mass statistic and the top-hat smoothed variance of the shear with a detection significance exceeding 12 sigma for each of them. We present results on angular scales from 3 arc-seconds to half a degree. The consistency of different statistical measures is demonstrated and confirms the lensing origin of the signal through tests that rely on the scalar nature of the gravitational potential. For Cold Dark Matter models we find $σ_8 Ω_0^{0.6}=0.43^{+0.04}_{-0.05}$ at the 95% confidence level. The measurement over almost three decades of scale allows to discuss the effect of the shape of the power spectrum on the cosmological parameter estimation. The degeneracy on sigma_8-Omega_0 can be broken if priors on the shape of the linear power spectrum (that can be parameterized by Gamma) are assumed. For instance, with Gamma=0.21 and at the 95% confidence level, we obtain 0.6 0.65 and Omega_0<0.4 for flat (Lambda-CDM) models. From the tangential/radial modes decomposition we can set an upper limit on the intrinsic shape alignment, which was recently suggested as a possible contribution to the lensing signal. Within the error bars, there is no detection of intrinsic shape alignment for scales larger than 1'.

Cosmic shear surveys

Gravitational weak shear produced by large-scale structures of the universe induces a correlated ellipticity distribution of distant galaxies. The amplitude and evolution with angular scale of the signal depend on cosmological models and can be inverted in order to constrain the power spectrum and the cosmological parameters. We present our recent analysis of 50 uncorrelated VLT fields and the very first constrains on ($Ω_m,σ_8$) and the nature of primordial fluctuations based on the join analysis of present-day cosmic shear surveys.

The VIRMOS-VLT Deep Survey

The aim of the VIRMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) is to study of the evolution of galaxies, large scale structures and AGNs from a sample of more than 150,000 galaxies with measured redshifts in the range 0<z<5+. The VVDS will rely on the VIMOS and NIRMOS wide field multi-object spectrographs, which the VIRMOS consortium is delivering to ESO. Together, they offer unprecedented multiplex capability in the wavelength range 0.37-1.8microns, allowing for large surveys to be carried out. The VVDS has several main aspects: (1) a deep multi-color imaging survey over 18deg^2 of more than one million galaxies, (2) a "wide" spectroscopic survey with more than 130,000 redshifts measured for objects brighter than IAB=22.5 over 18deg^2, (3) a "deep" survey with 50,000 redshifts measured to IAB=24, (4) ultra-deep" surveys with several thousand redshifts measured to IAB=25, (5) multi-wavelength observations with the VLA and XMM.

Terapixel Surveys for Cosmic Shear

The recent detections of cosmic shear signal announced by several groups have demonstrated the feasibility of this challenging program and convinced astro- nomers of its potential for cosmology. Cosmic shear analysis demands to handle Gigabytes of data in order to probe several square degrees in subarcsecond deep imaging mode. The success of these surveys is sensitive to the designs of the observation strategy, the organization of the data reduction pipelines and the links of the data base with surveys like X-ray or spectroscopic follow up. We describe the cosmic shear surveys we have carried out at the VLT and at CFHT and the way we handle this huge data set in a more general context including the VIRMOS and the XMM-LSS surveys, and the future CMB surveys.

Cosmic Shear Analysis in 50 Uncorrelated VLT Fields. Implications for Omega_0, sigma_8

We observed with the camera FORS1 on the VLT (UT1, ANTU) 50 randomly selected fields and analyzed the cosmic shear inside circular apertures with diameter ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 arc-minutes. The images were obtained in optimal conditions by using the Service Observing proposed by ESO on the VLT, which enabled us to get a well-defined and homogeneous set of data. The 50 fields cover a 0.65 square-degrees area spread over more than 1000 square-degrees which provides a sample ideal for minimizing the cosmic variance. Using the same techniques as in Van Waerbeke et al. 2000, we measured the cosmic shear signal and investigated the systematics of the VLT sample. We find a significant excess of correlations between galaxy ellipticities on those angular scales. The amplitude and the shape of the correlation as function of angular scale are remarkably similar to those reported so far. Using our combined VLT and CFHT data and adding the results published by other teams we put the first joint constraints on Omega_0 and sigma_8 using cosmic shear surveys. From a deduced average of the redshift of the sources the combined data are consistent with sigma_8\simeq (0.59 \pm 0.03) Omega_0^{-0.47} (for a CDM power spectrum and $Γ=0.21$), in excellent agreement with the cosmological constraints obtained from the local cluster abundance.

Cosmic Shear and Clusters of Galaxies

The first detections of cosmic shear signal reported recently by 4 independent groups cover angular scales between one and 10 arcmin. On those scales, the cosmic shear is a signature of non-linear perturbations, like groups and clusters of galaxies. We present the results obtained by our team on CFHT and on the VLT and discuss its impact for the analysis of cluster abundances and cosmology

Cosmic Shear with the CFHT

We present results of our cosmic shear survey in progress at the Canada- France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). We analysed 1.7 sq. degrees of data, out of which we measured a significant correlation of galaxy shape-orientation over several arcmin scale. We present measurements of the variance of the shear $<γ^2>$ and of the correlation functions $ $, $ $. The signal is consistent with gravitational lensing by large scale structures predictions. The level of residual systematics after PSF correction is small compared to our measured signal. We outline several evolutions of our work by using additional data covering 9 sq. degrees.

Cosmic Shear with the VLT

We report on the detection of cosmic shear on angular scales of 1.3-6.5 arcmin using 45 independent empty fields observed with the Very Large Telescope (VLT). This result confirms previous measurements obtained with the CFH Telescope at the same angular scales. We present the data analysis and the first preliminary results.

A Numerical Study of Cosmic Shear Statistics

We explore the stability of the variance and skewness of the cosmic gravitational convergence field, using two different approaches: first we simulate a whole MEGACAM survey (100 sq. degrees). The reconstructed mass map, obtained from a shear map, shows that the state-of-the-art data analysis methods can measure weak-lensing statistics at angular scales ranging from 2.5' to 25'. We looked also at the influence of a varying signal-to-noise ratio over the shear map (due to local variations of source density) on the mass reconstruction, by means of Monte-Carlo simulation. The effect at small scales can easily be corrected-for in most of the relevant cases. These results enhance the confidence in the capability of future large surveys to measure accurately cosmologically interesting quantities.

Spectroscopic follow up of arclets in AC114 with the VLT

We present the first results on the VLT/FORS-1 spectroscopic survey of amplified sources and multiple images in the lensing cluster AC114. Background sources were selected in the cluster core, close to the critical lines, using photometric redshifts combined with lensing inversion criteria. Spectroscopic results are given, together with a brief summary of the properties of some of these high-z galaxies.

Photometric Redshifts and Gravitational Telescopes

We review the use of photometric redshifts in the particular context of Gravitational Telescopes. We discuss on the possible application of such a technique to the study of both the faint population of distant sources and the properties of cluster lenses. Photometric reshifts could be used to derive the redshift distribution and properties of a very faint subsample of high-z lensed galaxies, otherwise out of reach. Concerning the mass distribution in lensing clusters, photometric reshifts are strongly needed to scale the mass in weak lensing analysis, and to characterize the lensing structure.

Detection of correlated galaxy ellipticities on CFHT data: first evidence for gravitational lensing by large-scale structures

We report the detection of a significant (5.5 sigma) excess of correlations between galaxy ellipticities at scales ranging from 0.5 to 3.5 arc-minutes. This detection of a gravitational lensing signal by large-scale structure was made using a composite high quality imaging survey of 6300 arcmin^2 obtained at the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) with the UH8K and CFH12K panoramic CCD cameras. The amplitude of the excess correlation is 2.2\pm 0.2 % at 1 arcmin scale, in agreement with theoretical predictions of the lensing effect induced by large-scale structure. We provide a quantitative analysis of systematics which could contribute to the signal and show that the net effect is small and can be corrected for. We show that the measured ellipticity correlations behave as expected for a gravitational shear signal. The relatively small size of our survey precludes tight constraints on cosmological models. However the data are in favor of cluster normalized cosmological models, and marginally reject Cold Dark Matter models with (Omega=0.3, sigma_8<0.6) or (Omega=1, sigma_8=1). The detection of cosmic shear demonstrates the technical feasibility of using weak lensing surveys to measure dark matter clustering and the potential for cosmological parameter measurements, in particular with upcoming wide field CCD cameras.

X-ray observations and mass determinations in the cluster of galaxies Cl0024+17

We present a detailed analysis of the mass distribution in the rich and distant cluster of galaxies Cl0024+17. X-ray data come from both a deep ROSAT/HRI image of the field (Bohringer et al. 1999) and ASCA spectral data. Using a wide field CCD image of the cluster, we optically identify all the faint X-ray sources, whose counts are compatible with deep X-ray number counts. In addition we marginally detect the X-ray counter-part of the gravitational shear perturbation detected by Bonnet et al. (1994) at a 2.5 $σ$ level. A careful spectral analysis of ASCA data is also presented. In particular, we extract a low resolution spectrum of the cluster free from the contamination by a nearby point source located 1.2 arcmin from the center. The X-ray temperature deduced from this analysis is $T_X = 5.7 ^{+4.9}_{-2.1}$ keV at the 90% confidence level. The comparison between the mass derived from a standard X-ray analysis and from other methods such as the Virial Theorem or the gravitational lensing effect lead to a mass discrepancy of a factor 1.5 to 3. We discuss all the possible sources of uncertainties in each method of mass determination and give some indications on the way to reduce them. A complementary study of optical data is in progress and may solve the X-ray/optical discrepancy through a better understanding of the dynamics of the cluster.

Properties of high-z galaxies as seen through lensing clusters

We discuss the first results obtained on the study of a sample of high-z galaxies (2 < z < 7), using the gravitational amplification effect in the core of lensing clusters. Sources are located close to the critical lines in clusters with well constrained mass distributions, and selected through photometric redshifts, computed on a large wavelength domain, and lens inversion techniques.

Weak lensing analysis of MS 1008-1224 with the VLT

We present a gravitational lensing analysis of the cluster of galaxies MS 1008-1224 (z=0.30), based on very deep observations obtained using the VLT with FORS and ISAAC during the science verification phase. We reconstructed the projected mass distribution from B,V,R,I bands using two different methods independently. The mass maps are remarkably similar, which confirm that the PSF correction worked well. The ISAAC and FORS data were combined to measure the photometric redshifts and constrain the redshift distribution of the lensed sources. The total mass inferred from weak shear is 2.3 10^{14} h^{-1} Mo on large scales, in agreement with the X-ray mass. The measured mass profile is well fit by both Navarro, Frenk and White and isothermal sphere with core radius models although the NFW is slightly better. In the inner regions, the lensing mass is about 2 times higher than the X-ray mass, which supports the view that complex physical processes in the innermost parts of clusters are responsible for the X-ray/lensing mass discrepancy. The central part of the cluster is composed of two mass peaks whose the center of mass is 15 arcsecond north of the cD galaxy. This provides an explanation for the 15 arcsecond offset between the cD and the center of the X-ray map reported elsewhere. The optical, X-ray and the mass distributions show that MS 1008-1224 is composed of many subsystems which are probably undergoing a merger. MS 1008-1224 shows a remarkable case of cluster-cluster lensing. The photometric redshifts show an excess of galaxies located 30 arcseconds south-west of the cD galaxy at a redshift of about 0.9 which is lensed by MS 1008-1224. These results show the importance of getting BVRIJK images silmultenously. The VLT is a unique tool to provide such datasets.

Proposed identification of Hubble Deep Field submillimeter source HDF 850.1

The IRAM interferometer has been used to detect the submm source HDF 850.1 found by Hughes et al. (1998) in the Hubble Deep Field. The flux density measured at 1.3mm is 2.2 mJy, in agreement with the flux density measured at the JCMT. The flux densities and upper limits measured at 3.4, 2.8, 1.3, 0.85, and 0.45 mm show that the emission is from dust. We suggest that the 1.3mm dust source is associated with the optical arc-like feature, 3-593.0, that has a photometric redshift of about 1.7. If HDF 850.1 is at this redshift and unlensed, its spectral energy distribution, combined with that of 3-593.0, matches closely that of the ultraluminous galaxy VII Zw 31. Another possibility is that the dust source may be gravitationally lensed by the elliptical galaxy 3-586.0 at a redshift of 1.
