Particle acceleration in electron-ion jets

Weibel instability created in collisionless shocks is responsible for particle (electron, positron, and ion) acceleration. Using a 3-D relativistic electromagnetic particle (REMP) code, we have investigated particle acceleration associated with a relativistic electron-ion jet fronts propagating into an ambient plasma without initial magnetic fields with a longer simulation system in order to investigate nonlinear stage of the Weibel instability and its acceleration mechanism. The current channels generated by the Weibel instability induce the radial electric fields. The z component of the Poynting vector (E x B) become positive in the large region along the jet propagation direction. This leads to the acceleration of jet electrons along the jet. In particular the E x B drift with the large scale current channel generated by the ion Weibel instability accelerate electrons effectively in both parallel and perpendicular directions.

Nonlinear optical response and spin-charge separation in one-dimensional Mott insulators

We theoretically study the nonlinear optical response and photoexcited states of the Mott insulators. The nonlinear optical susceptibility χ^(3) is calculated by using the exact diagonalization technique on small clusters. From the systematic study of the dependence of χ^(3) on dimensionality, we find that the spin-charge separation plays a crucial role in enhancing χ^(3) in the one-dimensional (1D) Mott insulators. Based on this result, we propose a holon-doublon model, which describes the nonlinear response in the 1D Mott insulators. These findings show that the spin-charge separation will become a key concept of optoelectronic devices.

Interchain interactions and magnetic properties of Li2CuO2

An effective Hamiltonian is constructed for an insulating cuprate with edge-sharing chains Li2CuO2.The Hamiltonian contains the nearest and next-nearest neighboring intrachain and zigzag-type interchain interactions. The values of the interactions are obtained from the analysis of the magnetic susceptibility, and this system is found to be described as coupled frustrated chains. We calculate the dynamical spin correlation function S(q,ω) by using the exact diagonalization method, and show that the spectra of S(q,ω) are characterized by the zigzag-type interchain interactions. The results of the recent inelastic neutron scattering experiment are discussed in the light of the calculated spectra.

The Structure Function Ratios F2(Li)/F2(D) and F2(C)/F2(D) at small x

We present the structure function ratios F2(Li)/F2(D) and F2(C)/F2(D) measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at a nominal incident muon energy of 200 GeV. The kinematic range 0.0001 < x < 0.7 and 0.01< Q^2 < 70 GeV^2 is covered. For values of $x$ less than $0.002$ both ratios indicate saturation of shadowing at values compatible with photoabsorption results.
