Quantum spin Hall effect and topological phase transitions in honeycomb antiferromagnets

While the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect and antiferromagnetic order constitute two of the most promising phenomena for embedding basic spintronic concepts into future technologies, almost all of the QSH insulators known to date are non-magnetic. Here, based on tight-binding arguments and first-principles theory, we predict two-dimensional antiferromagnets with honeycomb lattice structure to exhibit the QSH effect due to the combined symmetry of time reversal and spatial inversion. We identify functionalized Sn films as experimentally feasible examples which reveal large band gaps rendering these systems ideal for energy efficient spintronics applications. Remarkably, we discover that tensile strain can tune the magnetic order in these materials, accompanied by a topological phase transition from the QSH to the quantum anomalous Hall phase.

Efficient metallic spintronic emitters of ultrabroadband terahertz radiation

Terahertz electromagnetic radiation is extremely useful for numerous applications such as imaging and spectroscopy. Therefore, it is highly desirable to have an efficient table-top emitter covering the 1-to-30-THz window whilst being driven by a low-cost, low-power femtosecond laser oscillator. So far, all solid-state emitters solely exploit physics related to the electron charge and deliver emission spectra with substantial gaps. Here, we take advantage of the electron spin to realize a conceptually new terahertz source which relies on tailored fundamental spintronic and photonic phenomena in magnetic metal multilayers: ultrafast photo-induced spin currents, the inverse spin-Hall effect and a broadband Fabry-Pérot resonance. Guided by an analytical model, such spintronic route offers unique possibilities for systematic optimization. We find that a 5.8-nm-thick W/CoFeB/Pt trilayer generates ultrashort pulses fully covering the 1-to-30-THz range. Our novel source outperforms laser-oscillator-driven emitters such as ZnTe(110) crystals in terms of bandwidth, terahertz-field amplitude, flexibility, scalability and cost.

Femtosecond control of electric currents at the interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures

The idea to utilize not only the charge but also the spin of electrons in the operation of electronic devices has led to the development of spintronics, causing a revolution in how information is stored and processed. A novel advancement would be to develop ultrafast spintronics using femtosecond laser pulses. Employing terahertz (10$^{12}$ Hz) emission spectroscopy, we demonstrate optical generation of spin-polarized electric currents at the interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures at the femtosecond timescale. The direction of the photocurrent is controlled by the helicity of the circularly polarized light. These results open up new opportunities for realizing spintronics in the unprecedented terahertz regime and provide new insights in all-optical control of magnetism.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and Hall effects in the skyrmion phase of MnFeGe alloys

We carry out density functional theory calculations which demonstrate that the electron dynamics in the skyrmion phase of Fe-rich Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge alloys is governed by Berry phase physics. We observe that the magnitude of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, directly related to the mixed space-momentum Berry phases, changes sign and magnitude with concentration $x$ in direct correlation with the data of Shibata {\it et al.}, Nature Nanotech. {\bf 8}, 723 (2013). The computed anomalous and topological Hall effects in FeGe are also in good agreement with available experiments. We further develop a simple tight-binding model able to explain these findings. Finally, we show that the adiabatic Berry phase picture is violated in the Mn-rich limit of the alloys.

Novel type of atomic-scale spin lattice at a surface and its emergent Hall effect

We predict the occurrence of a novel type of atomic-scale spin lattice in an Fe monolayer on the Ir(001) surface. Based on density functional theory calculations we parametrize a spin Hamiltonian and solve it numerically using Monte-Carlo simulations. We find the stabilization of a three-dimensional spin structure arranged on a 3x3 lattice. Despite an almost vanishing total magnetization we predict the emergence of a large anomalous Hall effect, to which there is a significant topological contribution purely due to the real space spin texture at the surface.

Topological Crystalline Insulator and Quantum Anomalous Hall States in IV-VI based Monolayers and their Quantum Wells

Different from the two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator, the 2D topological crystalline insulator (TCI) phase disappears when the mirror symmetry is broken, e.g., upon placing on a substrate. Here, based on a new family of 2D TCIs - SnTe and PbTe monolayers - we theoretically predict the realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect with Chern number C = 2 even when the mirror symmetry is broken. Remarkably, we also demonstrate that the considered materials retain their large-gap topological properties in quantum well structures obtained by sandwiching the monolayers between NaCl layers. Our results demonstrate that the TCIs can serve as a seed for observing robust topologically non-trivial phases.

Real-Space and Reciprocal-Space Berry Phases in the Hall Effect of Mn$_{\rm 1-x}$Fe$_{\rm x}$Si

We report an experimental and computational study of the Hall effect in Mn$_{\rm 1-x}$Fe$_{\rm x}$Si, as complemented by measurements in Mn$_{\rm 1-x}$Co$_{\rm x}$Si, when helimagnetic order is suppressed under substitutional doping. For small $x$ the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the topological Hall effect (THE) change sign. Under larger doping the AHE remains small and consistent with the magnetization, while the THE grows by over a factor of ten. Both the sign and the magnitude of the AHE and the THE are in excellent agreement with calculations based on density functional theory. Our study provides the long-sought material-specific microscopic justification, that while the AHE is due to the reciprocal-space Berry curvature, the THE originates in real-space Berry phases.

Unusual Kondo physics in a Co impurity atom embedded in noble-metal chains

We analyze the conduction bands of the one dimensional noble-metal chains that contain a Co magnetic impurity by means of ab initio calculations. We compare the results obtained for Cu and Ag pure chains, as well as O doped Cu, Ag and Au chains with those previously found for Au pure chains. We find similar results in the case of Cu and Au hosts, whereas for Ag chains a different behavior is obtained. Differences and similarities among the different systems are analyzed by comparing the electronic structure of the three noble-metal hosts. The d-orbitals of Cu chains at the Fermi level have the same symmetry as in the case of Au chains. These orbitals hybridize with the corresponding ones of the Co impurity, giving rise to the possibility of exhibiting a two-channel Kondo physics.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in transport through Co doped Au chains

We calculate the conductance as a function of temperature $G(T)$ through Au monoatomic chains containing one Co atom as a magnetic impurity, and connected to two conducting leads with a 4-fold symmetry axis. Using the information derived from {\it ab initio} calculations, we construct an effective model $\Heff$ that hybridizes a 3d$^7$ quadruplet at the Co site with two 3d$^8$ triplets through the hopping of 5d$_{xz}$ and 5d$_{yz}$ electrons of Au. The quadruplet is split by spin anisotropy due to spin-orbit coupling. Solving $\Heff$ with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) % Wb: reverted my own change we find that at low temperatures $G(T)=a-b \sqrt{T}$ and the ground state impurity entropy is $\ln(2)/2$, a behavior similar to the two-channel Kondo model. Stretching the chain leads to a non Kondo phase, with the physics of the underscreened Kondo model at the quantum critical point.

Engineering ultrafast spin currents and terahertz transients by magnetic heterostructures

In spin-based electronics, information is encoded by the spin state of electron bunches. Processing this information requires the controlled transport of spin angular momentum through a solid, preferably at frequencies reaching the so far unexplored terahertz (THz) regime. Here, we demonstrate, by experiment and theory, that the temporal shape of femtosecond spin-current bursts can be manipulated by using specifically designed magnetic heterostructures. A laser pulse is employed to drive spins from a ferromagnetic Fe thin film into a nonmagnetic cap layer that has either low (Ru) or high (Au) electron mobility. The resulting transient spin current is detected by means of an ultrafast, contactless amperemeter based on the inverse spin Hall effect that converts the spin flow into a THz electromagnetic pulse. We find that the Ru cap layer yields a considerably longer spin-current pulse because electrons are injected in Ru d states that have a much smaller mobility than Au sp states. Thus, spin current pulses and the resulting THz transients can be shaped by tailoring magnetic heterostructures, which opens the door for engineering high-speed spintronic devices as well as broadband THz emitters in particular covering the elusive range from 5 to 10THz.

Spin-orbit strength driven crossover between intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms of the anomalous Hall effect in epitaxial L1o FePd and FePt

We determine the composition of intrinsic as well as extrinsic contributions to the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the isoelectronic L1o FePd and FePt alloys. We show that the AHE signal in our 30 nm thick epitaxially deposited films of FePd is mainly due to extrinsic side-jump, while in the epitaxial FePt films of the same thickness and degree of order the intrinsic contribution is dominating over the extrinsic mechanisms of the AHE. We relate this crossover to the difference in spin-orbit strength of Pt and Pd atoms and suggest that this phenomenon can be used for tuning the origins of the AHE in complex alloys.

Maximally Localized Wannier Functions within the FLAPW formalism

We report on the implementation of the Wannier Functions (WFs) formalism within the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FLAPW), suitable for bulk, film and one-dimensional geometries. The details of the implementation, as well as results for the metallic SrVO3, ferroelectric BaTiO3 grown on SrTiO3, covalently bonded graphene and a one-dimensional Pt-chain are given. We discuss the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the Wannier Functions for the cases of SrVO3 and platinum. The dependency of the WFs on the choice of the localized trial orbitals as well as the difference between the maximally localized and "first-guess" WFs are discussed. Our results on SrVO3 and BaTiO3, e.g. the ferroelectric polarization of BaTiO3, are compared to results published elsewhere and found to be in excellent agreement.

Interplay of structure and spin-orbit strength in magnetism of metal-benzene sandwiches: from single molecules to infinite wires

Based on first-principles density functional theory calculations we explore electronic and magnetic properties of experimentally producible sandwiches and infinite wires made of repeating benzene molecules and transition-metal atoms of V, Nb, and Ta. We describe the bonding mechanism in the molecules and in particular concentrate on the origin of magnetism in these structures. We find that all the considered systems have sizable magnetic moments and ferromagnetic spin-ordering, with the single exception of the V3-Bz4 molecule. By including the spin-orbit coupling into our calculations we determine the easy and hard axes of the magnetic moment, the strength of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE), relevant for the thermal stability of magnetic orientation, and the change of the electronic structure with respect to the direction of the magnetic moment, important for spin-transport properties. While for the V-based compounds the values of the MAE are only of the order of 0.05-0.5 meV per metal atom, increasing the spin-orbit strength by substituting V with heavier Nb and Ta allows to achieve an increase in anisotropy values by one to two orders of magnitude. The rigid stability of magnetism in these compounds together with the strong ferromagnetic ordering makes them attractive candidates for spin-polarized transport applications. For a Nb-benzene infinite wire the occurrence of ballistic anisotropic magnetoresistance is demonstrated.
