Two-step gap opening across the quantum critical point in a Kitaev honeycomb magnet

Quantum spin liquid involves fractionalized quasipariticles such as spinons and visons. They are expressed as itinerant Majorana fermions and $Z_2$ fluxes in the Kitaev model with bond-dependent exchange interactions on a honeycomb spin lattice. The observation has recently attracted attention for a candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$, showing spin liquid behaviour induced by a magnetic field. Since the observable spin excitation is inherently composed of the two quasiparticles, which further admix each other by setting in the magnetic field as well as non-Kitaev interactions, their individual identification remains challenging. Here we report an emergent low-lying spin excitation through nuclear magnetic and quadrupole resonance measurements down to $\sim 0.4$ K corresponding to $1/500$ of the exchange energy under the finely tuned magnetic field across the quantum critical point. We determined the critical behaviour of low-lying excitations and found evolution of two kinds of the spin gap at high fields. The two excitations exhibit repulsive magnetic field dependence, suggesting anti-crossing due to the hybridization between fractionalized quasiparticles.

Measurements of $π^\pm$, K$^\pm$, p and $\bar{\textrm{p}}$ spectra in proton-proton interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

Measurements of inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of $π^\pm$, K$^\pm$, p and $\bar{\textrm{p}}$ produced in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c ($\sqrt{s} = $ 6.3, 7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 GeV, respectively) were performed at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer. Spectra are presented as function of rapidity and transverse momentum and are compared to predictions of current models. The measurements serve as the baseline in the NA61/SHINE study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter.

Spin Resonance in the New-Structure-Type Iron-Based Superconductor CaKFe4As4

The dynamical spin susceptibility in the new-structure-type iron-based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ was investigated by using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Powder INS measurements show that the spin resonance at $Q_\text{res}=1.17(1)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$, corresponding to the $(π,π)$ nesting wave vector in tetragonal notation, evolves below $T_\text{c}$. The characteristic energy of the spin resonance $E_\text{res}=12.5$~meV is smaller than twice the size of the superconducting gap ($2Δ$). The broad energy feature of the dynamical susceptibility of the spin resonance can be explained by the RPA calculations, in which the different superconducting gaps on different Fermi surfaces are taken into account. Our INS and PRA studies demonstrate that the superconducting pairing nature in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is the $s_\pm$ symmetry.

Analysis of solar gamma rays and solar neutrons detected on March 7th and September 25th of 2011 by Ground Level Neutron Telescopes, SEDA-FIB and FERMI-LAT

At the 33rd ICRC, we reported the possible detection of solar gamma rays by a ground level detector and later re-examined this event. On March 7, 2011, the solar neutron telescope (SNT) located at Mt. Sierra Negra, Mexico (4,600 m) observed enhancements of the counting rate from 19:49 to 20:02 UT and from 20:50 to 21:01 UT. The statistical significance was 9.7sigma and 8.5sigma, respectively. This paper discusses the possibility of using this mountain detector to detect solar gamma rays. In association with this event, the solar neutron detector SEDA-FIB onboard the International Space Station has also detected solar neutrons with a statistical significance of 7.5sigma. The FERMI-LAT detector also observed high-energy gamma rays from this flare with a statistical significance of 6.7sigma. We thus attempted to make a unified model to explain this data. In this paper, we report on another candidate for solar gamma rays detected on September 25th, 2011 by the SNT located in Tibet (4,300 m) from 04:37 to 04:47 UT with a statistical significance of 8.0sigma (by the Li-Ma method).

Measurement of Meson Resonance Production in $π^{-} + $C Interactions at SPS energies

We present measurements of $ρ^0$, $ω$ and K$^{*0}$ spectra in $π^{-} + $C production interactions at 158 GeV/c and $ρ^0$ spectra at 350 GeV/c using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Spectra are presented as a function of the Feynman's variable $x_\text{F}$ in the range $0 < x_\text{F} < 1$ and $0 < x_\text{F} < 0.5$ for 158 GeV/c and 350 GeV/c respectively. Furthermore, we show comparisons with previous measurements and predictions of several hadronic interaction models. These measurements are essential for a better understanding of hadronic shower development and for improving the modeling of cosmic ray air showers.

Two-particle correlations in azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity in inelastic p+p interactions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron

Results on two-particle $ΔηΔϕ$ correlations in inelastic p+p interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158~GeV/c are presented. The measurements were performed using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The data show structures which can be attributed mainly to effects of resonance decays, momentum conservation, and quantum statistics. The results are compared with the EPOS and UrQMD models.

Measurements of $π^{\pm}$ differential yields from the surface of the T2K replica target for incoming 31 GeV/c protons with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

Measurements of particle emission from a replica of the T2K 90 cm-long carbon target were performed in the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN SPS, using data collected during a high-statistics run in 2009. An efficient use of the long-target measurements for neutrino flux predictions in T2K requires dedicated reconstruction and analysis techniques. Fully-corrected differential yields of $π^\pm$-mesons from the surface of the T2K replica target for incoming 31 GeV/c protons are presented. A possible strategy to implement these results into the T2K neutrino beam predictions is discussed and the propagation of the uncertainties of these results to the final neutrino flux is performed.

Inclusive production of $Λ$-hyperons was measured with the large acceptance NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS in inelastic p+p interactions at beam momentum of 158~\GeVc. Spectra of transverse momentum and transverse mass as well as distributions of rapidity and x$_{_F}$ are presented. The mean multiplicity was estimated to be $0.120\,\pm0.006\;(stat.)\,\pm 0.010\;(sys.)$. The results are compared with previous measurements and predictions of the EPOS, UrQMD and FRITIOF models.

Measurements of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $K^0_S$, $Λ$ and proton production in proton-carbon interactions at 31 GeV/$c$ with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

Measurements of hadron production in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c are performed using the NA61/ SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2009 using a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Inelastic and production cross sections as well as spectra of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, p, $K^0_S$ and $Λ$ are measured with high precision. These measurements are essential for improved calculations of the initial neutrino fluxes in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. A comparison of the NA61/SHINE measurements with predictions of several hadroproduction models is presented.

A Possible Detection of Solar Gamma-Rays by the Ground Level Detector

On March 7, 2011 from 19:48:00 to 20:03:00 UT, the solar neutron telescope located at Mt. Sierra Negra, Mexico (4,600m) observed a 8.8sigma enhancement. In this paper, we would like to try to explain this enhancement by a hypothesis that a few GeV gamma-rays arrived at the top of the mountain produced by the Sun. We postulate that protons were accelerated at the shock front. They precipitate at the solar surface and produced those gamma-rays. If hypothesis is confirmed, this enhancement is the first sample of GeV gamma-rays observed by a ground level detector.

Josephson effects in one-dimensional supersolids

We demonstrate that superflow past an obstacle is possible in a solid phase in the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a finite-range two-body interaction. The phenomenon we find is analogous to the DC Josephson effect in superconductors and we deduce the "Josephson relation" between the current and phase difference of the condensates separated by the obstacle. We also discuss persistent current and nonclassical rotational inertia in annular container with a penetrable potential barrier. The phase diagram in the plane of the current and the interaction strength is given. Our result provides a simple theoretical example of supersolidity in the presence of an obstacle.

Improved $b$-jet Energy Correction for $H \to b\bar{b}$ Searches at CDF

We present a method for improving the $b$-jet energy resolution in order to improve the signal sensitivity in searches for particles decaying to a $b$ quark and anti-$b$ quark. A correction function is computed for individual jets, which combines information from the secondary vertex tagger, the offline tracking and standard calorimeter-based jet-energy reconstruction algorithm in order to provide a more accurate measurement of the true $b$-quark energy. We apply the correction to Monte-Carlo-simulated jets in the process $WH \rightarrow \ell νb\bar b$ and find an improvement in both the mean and the resolution of the $b$-jet energy with respect to the $b$-quark energy. The correction improves the measured Higgs dijet invariant mass resolution from $\sim$ 15%(standard jet corrections) to $\sim$ 11%(improved jet corrections) in the Higgs mass range from 100 GeV/$c^2$ - 150 GeV/$c^2$. Using the corrected $b$-jet energies instead of the standard calorimeter-based $b$-jet energies results in a $\sim$ 9% improvement in the expected sensitivity for Higgs boson production cross section in the most sensitive search region of the $WH \rightarrow \ell νb\bar b$ analysis, which is two tagged jets and one charged central lepton.

Strong spin resonance on BaFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc = 30 K

We performed inelastic neutron scattering on powder sample of the P-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc = 30K, whose superconducting (SC) order parameter is expected to have line nodes. We have observed spin resonance at Q $\sim$ 1.2Å^{-1} and E=12 meV in the SC state. The resonance enhancement, which can be a measure of the area of sign reversal between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs), is comparable to those of other iron-based superconductors without line nodes. This fact indicates that the sign reversal between the FSs is still dominant in this system, and the line nodes should create only limited area of sign-reversal on a single FS. Hence the system can hold relatively high-Tc. Comparison with theoretical calculation indicates horizontal line nodes may be a candidate to reproduce the observation.

First-principles-based $\pm s$-wave modelling for iron-based superconductors:Studies for specific heat and nuclear magnetic relaxation rate

In order to consistently explain controversial experimental results on superconducting states observed by different probes in typical iron-based superconductors, we construct a realistic multi-band $\pm s$-wave pairing model by combining the quasiclassical formalism with the first-principles calculation. The model successfully resolves the controversies in contrast to the fact that simplified models such as two-band $\pm s$-wave one fail to do. A key in the model is the existence of relatively small gaps which leads to material-dependent peculiarities.

Search for Technicolor Particles Produced in Association with W Boson at CDF

We present a search for technicolor particles decaying into $b\bar b$, $b\bar c$ or $b\bar u$ and produced in association with $W$ bosons in $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}= 1.96 \mathrm{TeV}$. The search uses approximately $1.9 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of the dataset accumulated in the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We select events matching the $W$ + 2-jets signature and require at least one jets to be identified as $b$-quark jets. In the case of exactly one vertex $b$-tagged events, we apply a neural network flavor separator to reject contamination from charm and light quark jets. The number of tagged events and the invariant mass distributions of $W+2$ jets and dijets are consistent with the Standard Model expectations. We succeed to set a large 95% confidence level excluded region on the $π_{T}$ mass v.s. $ρ_{T}$ mass plane.

Simultaneous measurement of the photodisintegration of 4He in the giant dipole resonance region

We have performed for the first time the simultaneous measurement of the two-body and three-body photodisintegration cross-sections of 4He in the energy range from 21.8 to 29.8 MeV using monoenergetic pulsed photons and a 4-pi time projection chamber containing 4He gas as an active target in an event-by-event mode. The photon beam was produced via the Compton backscattering of laser photons with high-energy electrons. The 4He(gamma,p)3H and 4He(gamma,n)3He cross sections were found to increase monotonically with energy up to 29.8 MeV, in contrast to the result of a recent theoretical calculation based on the Lorentz integral transform method which predicted a pronounced peak at around 26-27 MeV. The energy dependence of the obtained 4He(gamma,n)3He cross section up to 26.5 MeV is marginally consistent with a Faddeev-type calculation predicting a flat pattern of the excitation function. The cross-section ratio of 4He(gamma,p)3H to 4He(gamma,n)3He is found to be consistent with the expected value for charge symmetry of the strong interaction within the experimental uncertainty in the measured energy range. The present results for the total and two-body cross-sections of the photodisintegration of 4He are compared to previous experimental data and recent theoretical calculations.

Nonpolar optical scattering of positronium in magnesium fluoride

We report the results of the analysis of the temperature broadening of the momentum distribution of delocalized Positronium (Ps) in Magnesium Fluoride in terms of optical deformation-potential scattering model (long-wavelength optical phonons). The Ps optical deformation-potential coupling constant $D_{o}$ in MgF$_{2}$ has been determined to be $(1.8\pm0.3)\times10^{9}$ eV/cm. We also show that the Ps momentum distribution is sensitive to second-order phase transitions in those crystals where optical deformation-potential scattering is allowed in one and forbidden in another crystalline phase.

Non-resonant direct p- and d-wave neutron capture by 12C

Discrete gamma-rays from the neutron capture state of 13C to its low-lying bound states have been measured using pulsed neutrons at En = 550 keV. The partial capture cross sections have been determined to be 1.7+/-0.5, 24.2+/-1.0, 2.0+/-0.4 and 1.0+/-0.4 microb for the ground (1/2-), first (1/2+), second (3/2-) and third (5/2+) excited states, respectively. From a comparison with theoretical predictions based on the non-resonant direct radiative capture mechanism, we could determine the spectroscopic factor for the 1/2+ state to be 0.80 +/- 0.04, free from neutron-nucleus interaction ambiguities in the continuum. In addition we have detected the contribution of the non-resonant d-wave capture component in the partial cross sections for transitions leading to the 1/2- and 3/2- states. While the s-wave capture dominates at En < 100 keV, the d-wave component turns out to be very important at higher energies. From the present investigation the 12C(n,gamma)13C reaction rate is obtained for temperatures in the range 10E+7 - 10E+10 K.
