Measurement of $\Lambda$ Polarization in the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{0} \Lambda$ Reaction at $p_{\pi^{-}}=1.33$ GeV/$c$ toward a New $\Lambda p$ Scattering Experiment

This paper presents high-precision experimental data of the polarization of the $\Lambda$ hyperon in the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{0} \Lambda$ reaction, measured in the angular range $0.6<\cos \theta ^{CM}_{K0}<1.0$ with a fine bin width of $d\cos \theta ^{CM}_{K0}=0.05$. The data were obtained from the J-PARC E40 experiment at the K1.8 beamline in the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. The observed average polarization of $\Lambda$ in the range $0.60<\cos \theta ^{CM}_{K0}<0.85$ was $0.932 \pm 0.058 \,(\text{stat}) \pm 0.028 \,(\text{syst})$, demonstrating the successful extraction of precise polarization observables. This result provides essential experimental input for partial wave analysis (PWA) of dynamical coupled-channel (DCC) models, which aim to uncover the underlying mechanisms of $N^{*}$ resonances that emerge in intermediate states of $\pi N$ and $\gamma N$ interactions. Besides, it indicates the feasibility of a strongly polarized $\Lambda$ beam suitable for future $\Lambda p$ scattering experiments (e.g., J-PARC E86).

Measurement of differential cross sections for $Σ^+p$ elastic scattering in the momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c

We performed a novel $Σ^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $Σ^+$ particles in the $Σ^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $δ_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Development and application of CATCH: A cylindrical active tracker and calorimeter system for hyperon-proton scattering experiments

In this study, we developed a new proton detector system called CATCH, which was designed for a scattering experiment involving a $Σ$ hyperon and a proton (J-PARC E40). CATCH is a cylindrical detector system covering an inner target that can be used to measure the trajectory and energy of a proton emitted from the target for the kinematic identification of a $Σ$p scattering event. It comprises a cylindrical fiber tracker (CFT), a bismuth germanate (BGO) calorimeter, and a plastic scintillator hodoscope (PiID), which are coaxially arranged from the inner to the outer sides. The CFT is a tracking detector consisting of 5,000 scintillation fibers, and it has two types of cylindrical layers in which the fibers are arranged in straight and spiral configurations. 24 BGO crystals are placed around the CFT to measure the kinetic energy of the recoil proton. The PiID is used to determine whether the recoil proton is stopped in the BGO calorimeter. We performed proton-proton (pp) and proton-carbon (pC) scattering experiments using an 80 MeV proton beam to evaluate the performance of CATCH. The total energy resolution for the recoil proton was 2.8 MeV in $σ$ for the entire angular region after the energy calibrations of the BGO calorimeter and the CFT. The angular resolution of the CFT was 1.27 degrees in $σ$ for the proton, and the time resolution was more than 1.8 ns in $σ$. We also developed an analysis method for deriving the cross section of the pp scattering using CATCH. The obtained relative differential cross section for the pp elastic scattering was consistent with that obtained by reliable partial wave analysis, and the systematic error was maintained at below 10%. These performance results satisfy our requirements for a reliable detection system for the $Σ$p scattering experiment conducted at J-PARC .

Precise measurement of differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction in momentum range 470-650 MeV/c

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions.The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Measurement of the differential cross sections of the Sigma-p elastic scattering in momentum range of 470 to 850 MeV/c

A high statistics $Σp$ scattering experiment has been performed at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Data for momentum-tagged $Σ^{-}$ running in a liquid hydrogen target were accumulated by detecting the $π^{-}p \to K^{+}Σ^{-}$ reaction with a high intensity $π^{-}$ beam of 20 M/spill. Differential cross sections of the $Σ^{-}p$ elastic scattering were derived with a drastically improved accuracy by identifying the largest statistics of about 4,500 events from 1.72 $\times$ $10^{7}$ $Σ^{-}$. The derived differential cross section shows a clear forward-peaking angular distribution for a $Σ^{-}$ momentum range from 470 to 850 MeV/$c$. The accurate data will impose a strong constraint on the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of $Ξ^-$-$^{14}$N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $Ξ^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$Λ$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $Ξ^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_Λ$Be + $^5_Λ$He. For the binding energy of the $Ξ^{-}$ hyperon in the $Ξ^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $Ξ^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak $ΞN$-$ΛΛ$ coupling.

Observation of a Be double-Lambda hypernucleus in the J-PARC E07 experiment

A double-$Λ$ hypernucleus, ${}_{ΛΛ}\mathrm{Be}$, was observed by the J-PARC E07 collaboration in nuclear emulsions tagged by the $(K^{-},K^{+})$ reaction. This event was interpreted as a production and decay of $ {}_{ΛΛ}^{\;10}\mathrm{Be}$, ${}_{ΛΛ}^{\;11}\mathrm{Be}$, or ${}_{ΛΛ}^{\;12}\mathrm{Be}^{*}$ via $Ξ^{-}$ capture in ${}^{16}\mathrm{O}$. By assuming the capture in the atomic 3D state, the binding energy of two $Λ$ hyperons$\,$($B_{ΛΛ}$) of these double-$Λ$ hypernuclei are obtained to be $15.05 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, $19.07 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, and $13.68 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. Based on the kinematic fitting, ${}_{ΛΛ}^{\;11}\mathrm{Be}$ is the most likely explanation for the observed event.

First Determination of Level Structure of an $sd$-Shell Hypernucleus, $\rm {^{19}_ΛF}$

We report on the first observation of $γ$ rays emitted from an $sd$-shell hypernucleus, $\rm ^{19}_ΛF$. The energy spacing between the ground state doublet, $1/2^{+}$ and $3/2^{+}$ states, of $\rm ^{19}_ΛF$ is determined to be $\rm 315.5 \pm 0.4 (stat) ^{+0.6}_{-0.5} (syst)~keV$ by measuring the $γ$-ray energy from the $M1(3/2^{+} \rightarrow 1/2^{+})$ transition. In addition, three $γ$-ray peaks were observed and assigned as $E2(5/2^{+} \rightarrow 1/2^{+})$, $E1(1/2^{-} \rightarrow 1/2^{+})$, and $E1(1/2^{-} \rightarrow 3/2^{+})$ transitions. The excitation energies of the $5/2^{+}$ and $1/2^{-}$ states are determined to be $\rm 895.2 \pm 0.3 (stat) \pm 0.5 (syst)~keV$ and $\rm 1265.6 \pm 1.2 (stat) ^{+0.7}_{-0.5} (syst)~keV$, respectively. It is found that the ground state doublet spacing is well described by theoretical models based on existing $s$- and $p$-shell hypernuclear data.

Observation of Spin-Dependent Charge Symmetry Breaking in $ΛN$ Interaction: Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy of $^4_{Λ}$He

The energy spacing between the ground-state spin doublet of $^4_Λ$He(1$^+$,0$^+$) was determined to be $1406 \pm 2 \pm 2$ keV, by measuring $γ$ rays for the $1^+ \to 0^+$ transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the $^4$He$(K^-,π^-)$ $^4_Λ$He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus $^4_Λ$H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in $ΛN$ interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the $0^+$ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the $1^+$ excited state, demonstrating that the $ΛN$ CSB interaction has spin dependence.

New NIR light-curve templates for classical Cepheids

We present new near-infrared (NIR) light-curve templates for fundamental (FU, JHK) and first overtone (FO, J) Cepheids. The new templates together with PL and PW relations provide Cepheid distances from single-epoch observations with a precision only limited by the intrinsic accuracy of the method adopted. The templates rely on a very large set of Galactic and Magellanic Clouds (MCs) Cepheids (FU,~600; FO,~200) with well sampled NIR (IRSF data) and optical (V,I; OGLE data) light curves. To properly trace the change in the shape of the light curve as a function of period, we split the sample of calibrating Cepheids into 10 different period bins. The templates for the first time cover FO Cepheids and the FU short-period Cepheids (P<5 days). Moreover, the zero-point phase is anchored to the phase of the mean magnitude along the rising branch. The new approach has several advantages in sampling the light curve of bump Cepheids when compared with the phase of maximum light. We also provide new estimates of the NIR-to-optical amplitude ratios for FU and FO Cepheids. We perform detailed analytical fits using both 7th-order Fourier series and multi-Gaussian periodic functions. The latter are characterized by a smaller number of free parameters (9 vs 15). Mean NIR magnitudes based on the new templates are up to 80% more accurate than single-epoch measurements and up to 50% more accurate than mean magnitudes based on previous templates, with typical associated uncertainties ranging from 0.015 mag (J) to 0.019 mag (K). Moreover, the errors on individual distances of Small MC Cepheids derived from NIR PW relations, are essentially reduced to the intrinsic scatter of the adopted relations. Thus, the new templates are the ultimate tool to estimate precise Cepheid distances from NIR single-epoch observations, which can be adopted to derive the 3D structure of the MCs.

Discovery of Mira variable stars in the metal-poor Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy

We report the discovery of two Mira variable stars (Miras) toward the Sextans dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy. We performed optical long-term monitoring observations for two red stars in the Sextans dSph. The light curves of both stars in the $I_{\rm c}$ band show large-amplitude (3.7 and 0.9 mag) and long-period ($326\pm 15$ and $122\pm 5$ days) variations, suggesting that they are Miras. We combine our own infrared data with previously published data to estimate the mean infrared magnitudes. The distances obtained from the period-luminosity relation of the Miras ($75.3^{+12.8}_{-10.9}$ and $79.8^{+11.5}_{-9.9}$ kpc, respectively), together with the radial velocities available, support memberships of the Sextans dSph ($90.0\pm 10.0$ kpc). These are the first Miras found in a stellar system with a metallicity as low as ${\rm [Fe/H]\sim -1.9}$, than any other known system with Miras.

AKARI's infrared view on nearby stars : Using AKARI Infrared Camera All-Sky Survey, 2MASS, and Hipparcos catalog

Results: We found that the (B-V) v.s. (V-S9W) color-color diagram is useful to identify the stars with infrared excess emerged from circumstellar envelopes/disks. Be stars with infrared excess are well separated from other types of stars in this diagram. Whereas (J-L18W) v.s. (S9W-L18W) diagram is a powerful tool to classify several object-types. Carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and OH/IR stars form distinct sequences in this color-color diagram. Young stellar objects (YSOs), pre-main sequence (PMS) stars, post-AGB stars and planetary nebulae (PNe) have largest mid-infrared color-excess, and can be identified in infrared catalog. Finally, we plot L18W v.s. (S9W-L18W) color-magnitude diagram, using the AKARI data together with Hipparcos parallaxes. This diagram can be used to identify low-mass YSOs, as well as AGB stars. We found that this diagram is comparable to the [24] vs ([8.0]-[24]) diagram of Large Magellanic Cloud sources using the Spitzer Space Telescope data. Our understanding of Galactic objects will be used to interpret color-magnitude diagram of stellar populations in nearby galaxies which Spitzer Space Telescope has observed. Conclusions: Our study of the AKARI color-color and color-magnitude will be used to explore properties of unknown objects in future. In addition, our analysis highlights a future key project to understand stellar evolution with circumstellar envelope, once the forthcoming astronometrical data with GAIA are available.

AKARI Near- to Mid-Infrared Imaging and Spectroscopic Observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud. I. Bright Point Source List

We carried out a near- to mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of the patchy areas in the Small Magellanic Cloud using the Infrared Camera on board AKARI. Two 100 arcmin2 areas were imaged in 3.2, 4.1, 7, 11, 15, and 24 um and also spectroscopically observed in the wavelength range continuously from 2.5 to 13.4 um. The spectral resolving power (lambda/Delta lambda) is about 20, 50, and 50 at 3.5, 6.6 and 10.6 um, respectively. Other than the two 100 arcmin2 areas, some patchy areas were imaged and/or spectroscopically observed as well. In this paper, we overview the observations and present a list of near- to mid-infrared photometric results, which lists ~ 12,000 near-infrared and ~ 1,800 mid-infrared bright point sources detected in the observed areas. The 10 sigma limits are 16.50, 16.12, 13.28, 11.26, 9.62, and 8.76 in Vega magnitudes at 3.2, 4.1, 7, 11, 15, and 24 um bands, respectively.

The interface between the stellar wind and interstellar medium around R Cassiopeiae revealed by far-infrared imaging

The circumstellar dust shells of intermediate initial-mass (about 1 to 8 solar masses) evolved stars are generated by copious mass loss during the asymptotic giant branch phase. The density structure of their circumstellar shell is the direct evidence of mass loss processes, from which we can investigate the nature of mass loss. We used the AKARI Infrared Astronomy Satellite and the Spitzer Space Telescope to obtain the surface brightness maps of an evolved star R Cas at far-infrared wavelengths, since the temperature of dust decreases as the distance from the star increases and one needs to probe dust at lower temperatures, i.e., at longer wavelengths. The observed shell structure and the star's known proper motion suggest that the structure represents the interface regions between the dusty wind and the interstellar medium. The deconvolved structures are fitted with the analytic bow shock structure to determine the inclination angle of the bow shock cone. Our data show that (1) the bow shock cone of 1 - 5 x 10^-5 solar masses (dust mass) is inclined at 68 degrees with respect to the plane of the sky, and (2) the dust temperature in the bow shock cone is raised to more than 20 K by collisional shock interaction in addition to the ambient interstellar radiation field. By comparison between the apex vector of the bow shock and space motion vector of the star we infer that there is a flow of interstellar medium local to R Cas whose flow velocity is at least 55.6 km/s, consistent with an environment conducive to dust heating by shock interactions.

An AKARI Search for Intracluster Dust of Globular Clusters

We report the observations of 12 globular clusters with the AKARI/FIS. Our goal is to search for emission from the cold dust within clusters. We detect diffuse emissions toward NGC 6402 and 2808, but the IRAS 100-micron maps show the presence of strong background radiation. They are likely emitted from the galactic cirrus, while we cannot rule out the possible association of a bump of emission with the cluster in the case of NGC 6402. We also detect 28 point-like sources mainly in the WIDE-S images (90 micron). At least several of them are not associated with the clusters but background galaxies based on some external catalogs. We present the SEDs by combining the near-and-mid infrared data obtained with the IRC if possible. The SEDs suggest that most of the point sources are background galaxies. We find one candidate of the intracluster dust which has no mid-infrared counterpart unlike the other point-like sources, although some features such as its point-like appearance should be explained before we conclude its intracluster origin. For most of the other clusters, we have confirmed the lack of the intracluster dust. We evaluate upper limits of the intracluster dust mass to be between 1.0E-05 and 1.0E-03 solar mass depending on the dust temperature. The lifetime of the intracluster dust inferred from the upper limits is shorter than 5 Myr (T=70K) or 50 Myr (35K). Such short lifetime indicates some mechanism(s) are at work to remove the intracluster dust. We also discuss its impact on the chemical evolution of globular clusters.

An SiO Maser Search off the Galactic Plane

We have searched for the SiO J=1--0 v= 1 and 2 maser lines at ~ 43 GHz in 277 2MASS/MSX/IRAS sources off the Galactic plane (|b|> 3 deg), which resulted in 119 (112 new) detections. Among the new detections, are two very faint objects with MSX 12 micron flux densities below 2 Jy. These are likely to be O-rich AGB-stars associated with dwarf-galaxy tidal tails. The sample also includes medium bright MSX objects at moderately high Galactic latitudes (3 deg<|b|<5 deg) and in the IRAS gap at higher latitudes. A signature of a warp of the inner Galactic disk is found for a disk subsample. This warp appears relatively strongly in the area of 0<l<45 deg and 3<|b|<5 deg. We also found a group of stars that does not follow to the Galactic rotation. This feature appears in the Galactic disk at l~ 27 deg, and extends more than 15 deg in Galactic latitude, like a stream of tidal debris from a dwarf galaxy.

Very early multi-color observations of the plateau phase of GRB 041006 afterglow

Observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 041006 with the Kiso Observatory 1.05 m Schmidt telescope, the Lulin Observatory 1.0 m telescope and the Xinglong Observatory 0.6 m telescope. Three-bands (B, V and R) of photometric data points were obtained on 2004 October 6, 0.025-0.329 days after the burst. These very early multi band light curves imply the existence of a color dependent plateau phase. The B-band light curve shows a clear plateau at around 0.03 days after the burst. The R band light curve shows the hint of a plateau, or a possible slope change, at around 0.1 days after the burst. The overall behavior of these multi-band light curves may be interpreted in terms of the sum of two separate components, one showing a monotonic decay the other exhibiting a rising and a falling phase, as described by the standard afterglow model.
