A diagnostic system of 5.7 keV muon beam for muon accelerator

Realization of a low-emittance muon beam through the acceleration of keV-scale muons requires the injection of a suitably matched beam into an accelerator, since beam mismatch can lead to emittance growth and reduced acceleration efficiency. In one such scheme, muons are first thermalized to room temperature and then injected into a linear accelerator. Non-destructive diagnostics are challenging because of the low energy and low intensity. We developed a compact low-energy muon diagnostic system compatible with the accelerator under construction at J-PARC. The system is designed to evaluate beam conditions required for precise tuning prior to acceleration. Commissioning with low-energy muon sources shows the system's capability to identify low-energy muon signals and measure beam profiles.

Acceleration of positive muons by a radio-frequency cavity

Acceleration of positive muons from thermal energy to $100~$keV has been demonstrated. Thermal muons were generated by resonant multi-photon ionization of muonium atoms emitted from a sheet of laser-ablated aerogel. The thermal muons were first electrostatically accelerated to $5.7~$keV, followed by further acceleration to 100 keV using a radio-frequency quadrupole. The transverse normalized emittance of the accelerated muons in the horizontal and vertical planes were $0.85 \pm 0.25 ~\rm{(stat.)}~^{+0.22}_{-0.13} ~\rm{(syst.)}~π~$mm$\cdot$mrad and $0.32\pm 0.03~\rm{(stat.)} ^{+0.05}_{-0.02} ~\rm{(syst.)}~π~$mm$\cdot$mrad, respectively. The measured emittance values demonstrated phase space reduction by a factor of $2.0\times 10^2$ (horizontal) and $4.1\times 10^2$ (vertical) allowing good acceleration efficiency. These results pave the way to realize the first-ever muon accelerator for a variety of applications in particle physics, material science, and other fields.

Measurement of the Gamma-Ray Energy Spectrum beyond 100 TeV from the HESS J1843$-$033 Region

HESS J1843$-$033 is a very-high-energy gamma-ray source whose origin remains unidentified. This work presents, for the first time, the energy spectrum of gamma rays beyond $100\, {\rm TeV}$ from the HESS J1843$-$033 region using the data recorded by the Tibet air shower array and its underground muon detector array. A gamma-ray source with an extension of $0.34^{\circ} \pm 0.12^{\circ}$ is successfully detected above $25\, {\rm TeV}$ at $(α,\, δ) = (281.09^{\circ}\pm 0.10^{\circ},\, -3.76^{\circ}\pm 0.09^{\circ})$ near HESS J1843$-$033 with a statistical significance of $6.2\, σ$, and the source is named TASG J1844$-$038. The position of TASG J1844$-$038 is consistent with those of HESS J1843$-$033, eHWC J1842$-$035, and LHAASO J1843$-$0338. The measured gamma-ray energy spectrum in $25\, {\rm TeV} < E < 130\, {\rm TeV}$ is described with ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (9.70\pm 1.89)\times 10^{-16} (E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-3.26\pm 0.30}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1} {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}$, and the spectral fit to the combined spectra of HESS J1843$-$033, LHAASO J1843$-$0338, and TASG J1844$-$038 implies the existence of a cutoff at $49.5\pm 9.0\, {\rm TeV}$. Associations of TASG J1844-038 with SNR G28.6$-$0.1 and PSR J1844-0346 are also discussed in detail for the first time.

Observation of gamma rays up to 320 TeV from the middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula HESS J1849$-$000

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, σ$ and $4.4\, σ$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $σ$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study thus proposes that HESS J1849$-$000 should be further investigated as a new candidate for a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, PeVatron.

Study of thermodynamic properties of substitutional mixture of Co(II)- and Fe(II)-based octacyanoniobates

A comprehensive study of thermodynamic properties of three samples of bimetallic molecular magnets [Co$^{\mathrm{II}}$(pyrazole)$_{4}$]$_{2x}$[Fe$^{\mathrm{II}}$(pyrazole)$_{4}$]$_{2(1-x)}$[Nb$^{\mathrm{IV}}$(CN)$_{8}$]$\cdot$4H$_{2}$O with $x$=0 (Co$_{2}$Nb), 0.5 (CoFeNb), and 1 (Fe$_{2}$Nb) is reported. The three samples display the same crystallographic structure crystallizing in the tetragonal system with space group $I4_1/a$. Their heat capacities are measured in the temperature range 0.36-100 K without applied field as well as in the field of $μ_0 H$ = 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 9 T. The results imply the presence of the second-order phase transitions to magnetically ordered phases at 4.87(8) K, 7.1(2) K, and 8.44(3) K for $x$=0, 0.5, and 1, respectively. The corresponding thermodynamic functions are analyzed to discuss the stability of the mixed compound and the magnetocaloric effect (MCE). The Gibbs energy of mixing is found to be positive but smaller in magnitude than the energy of thermal fluctuations indicating that the mixed sample is marginally stable in the full detected temperature range. The enthalpy of mixing is negative, which points to an ordered arrangement of the Co(II) and Fe(II) ions in the solid solution CoFeNb. The negative values of the entropy of mixing are explained by considering the enhanced rigidity of the crystal lattice of the solid solution sample. To extract the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity an approach based on a reasonable frequency spectrum is adopted. Taking advantage of the in-field heat capacity measurements MCE was described in terms of the isothermal entropy change $ΔS_\mathrm{M}$ and the adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_\mathrm{ad}$. The magnitudes of these quantities are typical for the class of molecular magnets.

Detectability of southern gamma-ray sources beyond 100 TeV with ALPAQUITA, the prototype experiment of ALPACA

Andes Large-area PArticle detector for Cosmic-ray physics and Astronomy (ALPACA) is an international experiment that applies southern very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy to determine the origin of cosmic rays around the knee energy region ($10^{15}\, {\rm eV} - 10^{16}\, {\rm eV}$). The experiment consists of an air shower (AS) array with a surface of $83, 000\, {\rm m}^2$ and an underground water Cherenkov muon detector (MD) array covering $5, 400\, {\rm m}^2$. The experimental site is at the Mt. Chacaltaya plateau in La Paz, Bolivia, with an altitude of $4, 740\, {\rm m}$ corresponding to $572\, {\rm g}/{\rm cm}^2$ atmospheric thickness. As the prototype experiment of ALPACA, the ALPAQUITA experiment aims to begin data acquisition in late 2021. The ALPAQUITA array consists of a smaller AS array ($18, 450\, {\rm m}^2$) and underground MD ($900\, {\rm m}^2$), which are now under construction. ALPAQUITA's sensitivity to gamma-ray sources is evaluated with Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation finds that five gamma-ray sources observed by H.E.S.S. and HAWC experiments will be detected by ALPAQUITA beyond 10 TeV and one out of these five - HESS J1702-420A - above 300 TeV in one calendar year observation. The latter finding means that scientific discussions can be made on the emission mechanism of gamma rays beyond 100 TeV from southern sources on the basis of the observational results of this prototype experiment.

Test of a small prototype of the COMET cylindrical drift chamber

The performance of a small prototype of a cylindrical drift chamber (CDC) used in the COMET Phase-I experiment was studied by using an electron beam. The prototype chamber was constructed with alternating all-stereo wire configuration and operated with the He-iC$_{4}$H$_{10}$ (90/10) gas mixture without a magnetic field. The drift space-time relation, drift velocity, d$E$/d$x$ resolution, hit efficiency, and spatial resolution as a function of distance from the wire were investigated. The average spatial resolution of 150 $μ$m with the hit efficiency of 99% was obtained at applied voltages higher than 1800 V. We have demonstrated that the design and gas mixture of the prototype match the operation of the COMET CDC.

Gamma-ray Observation of the Cygnus Region in the 100 TeV Energy Region

We report observations of gamma-ray emissions with energies in the 100 TeV energy region from the Cygnus region in our Galaxy. Two sources are significantly detected in the directions of the Cygnus OB1 and OB2 associations. Based on their positional coincidences, we associate one with a pulsar PSR J2032+4127 and the other mainly with a pulsar wind nebula PWN G75.2+0.1 with the pulsar moving away from its original birthplace situated around the centroid of the observed gamma-ray emission. This work would stimulate further studies of particle acceleration mechanisms at these gamma-ray sources.

Molecular beam deposition of a new layered pnictide with distorted Sb square nets

While the family of layered pnictides $ABX_2$ ($A$ : rare or alkaline earth metals, $B$ : transition metals, $X$ : Sb/Bi) can host Dirac dispersions based on Sb/Bi square nets, nearly half of them has not been synthesized yet for possible combinations of the $A$ and $B$ cations. Here we report the fabrication of EuCdSb$_{\mathrm{2}}$ with the largest $B$-site ionic radius, which is stabilized for the first time in thin film form by molecular beam deposition. EuCdSb$_{\mathrm{2}}$ crystallizes in an orthorhombic $Pnma$ structure and exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering of the Eu magnetic moments at $T_\mathrm{N}=15$K. Our successful growth will be an important step for further exploring novel Dirac materials using film techniques.

Effects of Electron Correlations and Chemical Pressures on Superconductivity of $β^{\prime\prime}$-type Organic Compounds

We investigate low-temperature electronic states of the series of organic conductors $β^{\prime\prime}$-(BEDT-TTF)$_4$[(H$_3$O)M(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]G, where BEDT-TTF is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene, and M and G represent trivalent metal ions and guest organic molecules, respectively. Our structural analyses reveal that the replacement of M and G give rise to systematic change in the cell parameters, especially in the $b$-axis length, which has positive correlation with the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Analyses of temperature and magnetic field dependences of the electrical resistance including the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations elucidates that the variation of charge disproportionation, effective mass and the number of itinerant carriers, can be systematically explained by the change of the $b$-axis length. The changes of the transfer integrals induced by stretching/compressing the $b$-axis are confirmed by the band calculation. We discuss that electron correlations in quarter-filled electronic bands lead to charge disproportionation and the possibility of a novel pairing mechanism of superconductivity mediated by charge degrees of freedom.

Molecular beam epitaxy of three-dimensionally thick Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 films

Rapid progress of quantum transport study in topological Dirac semimetal, including observations of quantum Hall effect in two-dimensional (2D) Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ samples, has uncovered even more interesting quantum transport properties in high-quality and three-dimensional (3D) samples. However, such 3D Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ films with low carrier density and high electron mobility have been hardly obtained. Here we report the growth and characterization of 3D thick Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ films adopting molecular beam epitaxy. The highest electron mobility ($μ$ = 3 $\times$ 10$^{4}$ cm$^{2}$/Vs) among the reported film samples has been achieved at a low carrier density ($\textit{n} = 5$ $\times$ 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-3}$). In the magnetotransport measurement, Hall plateau-like structures are commonly observed in spite of the 3D thick films ($\textit{t} = 120$ nm). On the other hand, field angle dependence of the plateau-like structures and corresponding Shubunikov-de Haas oscillations rather shows a 3D feature, suggesting the appearance of unconventional magnetic orbit, also distinct from the one described by the semiclassical Weyl-orbit equation.

Compact buncher cavity for muons accelerated by a radio-frequency quadrupole

A buncher cavity has been developed for the muons accelerated by a radio-frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). The buncher cavity is designed for $β=v/c=0.04$ at an operational frequency of 324 MHz. It employs a double-gap structure operated in the TEM mode for the required effective voltage with compact dimensions, in order to account for the limited space of the experiment. The measured resonant frequency and unloaded quality factor are 323.95 MHz and $3.06\times10^3$, respectively. The buncher cavity was successfully operated for longitudinal bunch size measurement of the muons accelerated by the RFQ.

Thermal expansion of organic superconductor a-(BEDT-TTF)2 NH4Hg(SCN)4

The temperature dependence of the linear thermal expansion coefficients (LTEC) of a single crystal of a-(BEDT-TTF)2NH4Hg(SCN)4 where BEDT-TTF is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene was studied by the method of precision capacitive dilatometry in the temperature range 2-250 K along the crystallographic direction b* (perpendicular to the crystal layers). Negative values of LTEC were found below 4 K. Probably it is due to charge fluctuations as the temperature approaches the temperature of transition to the superconducting state Tc. It has been suggested that the bends on temperature dependence of LTEC observed in the temperature range 25-45 K are related to order-disorder arrangement of NH4+ ions. Weak maximum of the LTEC, detected at a temperature of about 200-220 K, can be caused by the processes of charge redistribution and the associated intermolecular interaction fluctuations.

Negative magnetoresistance suppressed through topological phase transition in (Cd1-xZnx)3As2 films

The newly discovered topological Dirac semimetals host the possibilities of various topological phase transitions through the control of spin-orbit coupling as well as symmetries and dimensionalities. Here, we report a magnetotransport study of high-mobility (Cd1-xZnx)3As2 films, where the topological Dirac semimetal phase can be turned into a trivial insulator via chemical substitution. By high-field measurements with a Hall-bar geometry, magnetoresistance components ascribed to the chiral charge pumping have been distinguished from other extrinsic effects. The negative magnetoresistance exhibits a clear suppression upon Zn doping, reflecting decreasing Berry curvature of the band structure as the topological phase transition is induced by reducing the spin-orbit coupling.

First muon acceleration using a radio frequency accelerator

Muons have been accelerated by using a radio frequency accelerator for the first time. Negative muonium atoms (Mu$^-$), which are bound states of positive muons ($μ^+$) and two electrons, are generated from $μ^+$'s through the electron capture process in an aluminum degrader. The generated Mu$^-$'s are initially electrostatically accelerated and injected into a radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). In the RFQ, the Mu$^-$'s are accelerated to 89 keV. The accelerated Mu$^-$'s are identified by momentum measurement and time of flight. This compact muon linac opens the door to various muon accelerator applications including particle physics measurements and the construction of a transmission muon microscope.

Thermal expansion of organic superconductor k-(D4-BEDT-TTF)2Cu{N(CN)2}Br. Isotopic effect

Linear thermal expansion coefficient (LTEC) of single crystal k-(D4-BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br was studied across the crystal layers in the temperature range 2-290 K using the method of precise capacitive dilatometry. Below Tc = 11,6 K the LTEC of the sample had a small negative value, which is apparently due to the transition from the paramagnetic metal in the superconducting state. There was a bend of temperature dependence of the LTEC, which shows broad peak around 40 K and can be attributed to the elastic lattice anomaly around the end-point of Mott boundary. A sharp jump in the LTEC values and hysteresis was observed in the area of Tg ~ 75-77 K, what is likely explained by the transition in a glass-like state. The isotope effect in the thermal expansion is discusses, which manifested itself in a shift of the phase transitions in comparison with fully deuterated BEDT-TTF sample.

Magnetic-Torque Evidence for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov State for In-Plane Magnetic Fields in the Organic Superconductor k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2

We present magnetic-torque measurements of the organic superconductor k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 for in-plane magnetic fields up to 32 T. In this layered two-dimensional compound the superconductivity can persist even in fields above the Pauli limit of about 21 T. There, a pronounced upturn of the upper-critical-field line occurs and the superconducting phase-transition line splits and forms an additional high magnetic field phase. k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 is a spin-singlet superconductor, therefore, such a superconducting high-field phase beyond the Pauli limit can originate only from Cooper pairing with finite center-of-mass momentum. The measurements are discussed in connection with a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, in accordance with earlier specific-heat observations. The torque experiments allow us to investigate the high magnetic-field phase diagram and the FFLO state of k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 in great detail.

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov State in the Organic Superconductor k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 as Observed in Magnetic Torque Experiments

We present magnetic-torque experiments on the organic superconductor k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 for magnetic fields applied parallel to the 2D superconducting layers. The experiments show a crossover from a second-order to a first-order transition when the upper critical field reaches 21 T. Beyond this field, which we interpret as the Pauli limit for superconductivity, the upper critical field line shows a pro-nounced upturn and a phase transition line separates the superconducting state into a low- and a high-field phase. We interpret the data in the framework of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state.
