Performance of hybrid entanglement photon pair source for quantum key distribution

We report on the experimental demonstration of a source of hybrid entanglement pairs between two different degrees of freedom, a 1550 nm time-bin qubit and an 810 nm polarization qubit. The polarization qubit at 810 nm is transformed by an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer consisted of a Glan laser prism and a polarization-maintaining fiber. We obtained visibilities of 95.8% and 88% along Z-Z and X-X axes on the Poincare sphere, respectively with a coincidence count rate of more than 800 c/s after entanglement format transformation. These values are well above the threshold of 70.7% needed to violate a Bell inequality and allow distilling a secure key in the quantum key distribution.

Unconventional spin freezing and fluctuations in the frustrated antiferromagnet NiGa2S4

Muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments reveal unconventional spin freezing and dynamics in the two-dimensional (2D) triangular lattice antiferromagnet NiGa2S4. Long-lived disordered Ni-spin freezing (correlation time > 10-6 s at 2 K) sets in below T_f = 8.5 +- 0.5 K with a mean-field-like temperature dependence. The observed exponential temperature dependence of the muon spin relaxation above T_f is strong evidence for 2D critical spin fluctuations. Slow Ni spin fluctuations coexist with quasistatic magnetism at low temperatures but are rapidly suppressed for fields > 10 mT, in marked contrast with the field-independent specific heat. The muSR and bulk susceptibility data indicate a well-defined 2D phase transition at T_f, below which NiGa2S4 is neither a conventional magnet nor a singlet spin liquid.

High Field ESR in the Two-Dimensional Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet NiGa2S4

In this Letter, we report the results of ESR measurements in high magnetic fields up to about 53 T on single crystals of NiGa2S4 to clarify the spin dynamics in more detail. We have found that the dynamics of Z2 vortices affects the temperature dependence of the ESR absorption linewidth and the frequency dependence of the ESR resonance fields at 1.3 K is well explained by a conventional spin wave theory. These results suggest an occurrence of Z2 vortex-induced topological transition.

Spin dynamics and spin freezing behavior in the two-dimensional antiferromagnet NiGa$_{2}$S$_{4}$ revealed by Ga-NMR, NQR and $μ$SR measurements

We have performed $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and muon spin rotation/resonance on the quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnet (AFM) NiGa$_2$S$_4$, in order to investigate its spin dynamics and magnetic state at low temperatures. Although there exists only one crystallographic site for Ga in NiGa$_2$S$_4$, we found two distinct Ga signals by NMR and NQR. The origin of the two Ga signals is not fully understood, but possibly due to stacking faults along the c axis which induce additional broad Ga NMR and NQR signals with different local symmetries. We found the novel spin freezing occurring at $T_{\rm f}$, at which the specific heat shows a maximum, from a clear divergent behavior of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ and nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate $1/T_{2}$ measured by Ga-NQR as well as the muon spin relaxation rate $λ$. The main sharp NQR peaks exhibit a stronger tendency of divergence, compared with the weak broader spectral peaks, indicating that the spin freezing is intrinsic in NiGa$_2$S$_4$. The behavior of these relaxation rates strongly suggests that the Ni spin fluctuations slow down towards $T_{\rm f}$, and the temperature range of the divergence is anomalously wider than that in a conventional magnetic ordering. A broad structureless spectrum and multi-component $T_1$ were observed below 2 K, indicating that a static magnetic state with incommensurate magnetic correlations or inhomogeneously distributed moments is realized at low temperatures. However, the wide temperature region between 2 K and $T_{\rm f}$, where the NQR signal was not observed, suggests that the Ni spins do not freeze immediately below $T_{\rm f}$, but keep fluctuating down to 2 K with the MHz frequency range.

Unusual superexchange pathways in a Ni triangular lattice of NiGa$_2$S$_4$ with negative charge-transfer energy

We have studied the electronic structure of the Ni triangular lattice in NiGa$_2$S$_4$ using photoemission spectroscopy and subsequent model calculations. The cluster-model analysis of the Ni 2$p$ core-level spectrum shows that the S 3$p$ to Ni 3$d$ charge-transfer energy is $\sim$ -1 eV and the ground state is dominated by the $d^9L$ configuration ($L$ is a S 3$p$ hole). Cell perturbation analysis for the NiS$_2$ triangular lattice indicates that the strong S 3$p$ hole character of the ground state provides the enhanced superexchange interaction between the third nearest neighbor sites.

Simulation of Acoustic Black Hole in a Laval Nozzle

A numerical simulation of fluid flows in a Laval nozzle is performed to observe formations of acoustic black holes and the classical counterpart to Hawking radiation under a realistic setting of the laboratory experiment. We determined the Hawking temperature of the acoustic black hole from obtained numerical data. Some noteworthy points in analyzing the experimental data are clarified through our numerical simulation.

Generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs in a cascade of two type-I crystals pumped by femtosecond pulses

We report the generation of polarization-entangled photons by femtosecond-pulse-pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a cascade of two type-I crystals. Highly entangled pulsed states were obtained by introducing a temporal delay between the two orthogonal polarization components of the pump field. They exhibited high-visibility quantum interference and a large concurrence value, without the need of post-selection using narrow-bandwidth-spectral filters. The results are well explained by the theory which incorporates the space-time dependence of interfering two-photon amplitudes if dispersion and birefringence in the crystals are appropriately taken into account. Such a pulsed entangled photon well localized in time domain is useful for various quantum communication experiments, such as quantum cryptography and quantum teleportation.

Restoration of Entanglement by Spectral Filters

We experimentally demonstrate that entanglement of bi-photon polarization state can be restored by spectral filters. This restoration procedure can be viewed as a new class of quantum eraser, which retrieves entanglement rather than just interference by manipulating an ancillary degree of freedom.

Quantum Key Distribution using Two Coherent States of Light and their Superposition

Quantum mechanical complementarity ensures the security of the key-distribution scheme reported by Brassard and Bennet in 1984 (BB84), but does not prohibit use of multi-photons as a signal carrier. We describe a novel BB84 scheme in which two nearly orthogonal coherent states carry the key, and the superposition of these states (cat states) protects the communication channel from eavesdropping. Information leakage to eavesdroppers can be determined from the visibility of the interferential fringes in the distribution of the outcome when a certain quadrature component is measured through homodyne detection. The effect of channel loss and detector inefficiency is discussed.

Cosmological perturbation with two scalar fields in reheating after inflation

We investigate the cosmological perturbation of two-scalar field model during the reheating phase after inflation. Using the exact solution of the perturbation in long-wavelength limit, which is expressed in terms of the background quantities, we analyze the behavior of the metric perturbation. The oscillating inflaton field gives rise to the parametric resonance of the massless scalar field and this leads to the amplification of the iso-curvature mode of the metric perturbations.
