Predictions for $p+$Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5$ TeV: Comparison with Data

Predictions made in Albacete {\it et al} prior to the LHC $p+$Pb run at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5$ TeV are compared to currently available data. Some predictions shown here have been updated by including the same experimental cuts as the data. Some additional predictions are also presented, especially for quarkonia, that were provided to the experiments before the data were made public but were too late for the original publication are also shown here.

Structure of chromomagnetic fields in the glasma

The initial stage of a heavy ion collision is dominated by nonperturbatively strong chromoelectric and -magnetic fields. The spatial Wilson loop provides a gauge invariant observable to probe the dynamics of the longitudinal chromomagnetic field. We discuss recent results from a real time lattice calculation of the area-dependence of the expectation value of the spatial Wilson loop. We show that at relatively early times after the collision, a universal scaling as a function of the area emerges at large distances for very different initial conditions, with a nontrivial critical exponent. A similar behavior has earlier been seen in calculations of the gluon transverse momentum spectrum, which becomes independent of the initial spectrum of gauge fields. We also show the distribution of eigenvalues of the spatial Wilson loop and the fluctuations of its real and imaginary parts.

Structure of longitudinal chromomagnetic fields in high energy collisions

We compute expectation values of spatial Wilson loops in the forward light cone of high-energy collisions. We consider ensembles of gauge field configurations generated from a classical Gaussian effective action as well as solutions of high-energy renormalization group evolution with fixed and running coupling. The initial fields correspond to a color field condensate exhibiting domain-like structure over distance scales of order the saturation scale. At later times universal scaling emerges at large distances for all ensembles, with a nontrivial critical exponent. Finally, we compare the results for the Wilson loop to the two-point correlator of magnetic fields.

Forward particle productions at RHIC and the LHC from CGC within local rcBK evolution

In order to describe forward hadron productions in high-energy nuclear collisions, we propose a Monte-Carlo implementation of Dumitru-Hayashigaki-Jalilian-Marian formula with the unintegrated gluon distribution obtained numerically from the running-coupling BK equation. We discuss influence of initial conditions for the BK equation by comparing a model constrained by global fit of small-x HERA data and a newly proposed one from the running coupling MV model.

Search for a Ridge Structure Origin with Shower Broadening and Jet Quenching

We investigate the role of jet and shower parton broadening by the strong colour field in the $Δη$-$Δϕ$ correlation of high $p_T$ particles. When anisotropic momentum broadening ($Δp_z > Δp_T$) is given to jet and shower partons in the initial stage, a ridge-like structure is found to appear in the two hadron correlation. The ratio of the peak to the pedestal yield is overestimated.

Hadronic dissipative effects on transverse dynamics at RHIC

We simulate the dynamics of Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) with a hybrid model that treats the quark-gluon plasma macroscopically as an ideal fluid, but models the hadron resonance gas microscopically using a hadronic cascade. We find that much of the mass-ordering pattern for v_2(p_T) observed at RHIC is generated during the hadronic stage due to build-up of additional radial flow. We also find that the mass-ordering pattern is violated for phi meson due to small interaction cross section in the hadron resonance gas.

Entropy production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions and the correlation of shear viscosity and thermalization time

We study entropy production in the early stage of high-energy heavy-ion collisions due to shear viscosity. We employ the second-order theory of Israel-Stewart with two different stress relaxation times, as appropriate for strong coupling or for a Boltzmann gas, respectively, and compare the hydrodynamic evolution. Based on present knowledge of initial particle production, we argue that entropy production is tightly constrained. We derive new limits on the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio $η/s$, independent from elliptic flow effects, and determine the corresponding Reynolds number. Furthermore, we show that for a given entropy production bound, that the initial time $τ_0$ for hydrodynamics is correlated to the viscosity. The conjectured lower bound for $η/s$ provides a lower limit for $τ_0$.

Eccentricity fluctuations from the Color Glass Condensate at RHIC and LHC

In this brief note, we determine the fluctuations of the initial eccentricity in heavy-ion collisions caused by fluctuations of the nucleon configurations. This is done via a Monte-Carlo implementation of a Color Glass Condensate $k_t$-factorization approach. The eccentricity fluctuations are found to nearly saturate elliptic flow fluctuations measured recently at RHIC. Extrapolations to LHC energies are shown.

Jet-fluid string formation and decay in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

We propose a new hadronization mechanism, jet-fluid string (JFS) formation and decay, to understand observables in intermediate to high-$p_{T}$ regions comprehensively. In the JFS model, hard partons produced in jet lose their energy in traversing the QGP fluid, which is described by fully three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. When a jet parton escapes from the QGP fluid, it picks up a partner parton from a fluid and forms a color singlet string, then it decays to hadrons. We find that high-$p_T$ $v_2$ values in JFS are about two times larger than in the independent fragmentation model.

Effects of fluctuations on the initial eccentricity from the Color Glass Condensate in heavy ion collisions

We introduce a modified form of the Kharzeev-Levin-Nardi (KLN) approach for nuclear collisions. The new ansatz for the unintegrated gluon distribution function preserves factorization, and the saturation scale is bound from below by that for a single nucleon. It also reproduces the correct scaling with the number of collisions at high transverse momentum. The corresponding Monte Carlo implementation allows us to account for fluctuations of the hard sources (nucleons) in the transverse plane. We compute various definitions of the eccentricity within the new approach, which are relevant for the interpretation of the elliptic flow. Our approach predicts breaking of the scaling of the eccentricity with the Glauber eccentricity at the level of about 30%.

Hadron-string cascade versus hydrodynamics in Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV

Single particle spectra as well as elliptic flow in Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV are investigated within a hadronic cascade model and an ideal hydrodynamic model. Pseudorapidity distribution and transverse momentum spectra for charged hadrons are surprisingly comparable between these two models. However, a large deviation is predicted for the elliptic flow. The forthcoming experimental data will clarify the transport and thermalization aspects of matter produced in Cu+Cu collisions.

Mean-Field Effects on Collective Flows in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions at 2-158A GeV energies

Collective flows in heavy-ion collisions from AGS ($(2-11)A$ GeV) to SPS ($(40,158)A$ GeV) energies are investigated in a nonequilibrium transport model with nuclear mean-field (MF). Sideward $ $, directed $v_1$, and elliptic flows $v_2$ are systematically studied with different assumptions on the nuclear equation of state (EOS). We find that momentum dependence in the nuclear MF is important for the understanding of the proton collective flows at AGS and SPS energies. Calculated results with momentum dependent MF qualitatively reproduce the experimental data of proton sideward, directed, and elliptic flows in a incident energy range of $(2-158)A$ GeV.

Interfacing the JQMD and JAM Nuclear Reaction Codes to Geant4

Geant4 is a toolkit for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter. It provides a comprehensive set of tools for geometry, tracking, detector response, run, event and track management, visualization and user interfaces. Geant4 also has an abundant set of physics models that handle the diverse interactions of particles with matter across a wide energy range. However, there are also many well-established reaction codes currently used in the same fields where Geant4 is applied. In order to take advantage of these codes, we began to investigate their use from within the framework of Geant4. The first codes chosen for this investigation were the Jaeri Quantum Molecular Dynamics (JQMD) and Jet AA Microscopic Transportation Model (JAM) codes. JQMD is a QMD model code which is widely used to analyze various aspects of heavy ion reactions. JAM is a hadronic cascade model code which explicitly treats all established hadronic states, including resonances with explicit spin and isospin, as well as their anti-particles. We successfully developed interfaces between these codes and Geant4. These allow a user to construct a detector using the powerful material and geometrical capabilities of Geant4, while at the same time implementing nuclear reactions handled by the JQMD and JAM models and the Hadronic framework of Geant4 proved its flexibility and expandability.

Sideward Peak of Intermediate Mass Fragments in High Energy Proton Induced Reactions

Intermediate mass fragment (IMF) formation in the 12 GeV proton induced reaction on Au target is analyzed by using a combined framework of a transport model (JAM/MF) and a newly developed non-equilibrium percolation (NEP) model. In this model, we can well reproduce the mass distribution of fragments. In addition, the sideward peaked angular distribution would emerge under the condition that the fragment formation time is very short, around 20 fm/c. Within this short time period, the un-heated part of the residual nucleus is kept to have doughnut shape, then the Coulomb repulsion from this shape strengthens the sideward peak of IMF.

A Study of Parton Energy Loss in Au+Au Collisions at RHIC using Transport Theory

Parton energy loss in Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies is studied by numerically solving the relativistic Boltzmann equation for the partons including $2 \leftrightarrow 2$ and $2 \to 2 + final state radiation$ collision processes. Final particle spectra are obtained using two hadronization models; the Lund string fragmentation and independent fragmentation models. Recent, preliminary $π^0$ transverse momentum distributions from central Au+Au collisions at RHIC are reproduced using gluon-gluon scattering cross sections of 5-12 mb, depending upon the hadronization model. Comparisons with the HIJING jet quenching algorithm are made.

Re-Hardening of Hadron Transverse Mass Spectra in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

We analyze the spectra of pions and protons in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies from 2 A GeV to 65+65 A GeV by using a jet-implemented hadron-string cascade model. In this energy region, hadron transverse mass spectra first show softening until SPS energies, and re-hardening may emerge at RHIC energies. Since hadronic matter is expected to show only softening at higher energy densities, this re-hardening of spectra can be interpreted as a good signature of the quark-gluon plasma formation.
