Odd-frequency Cooper pairs and zero-energy surface bound states in superfluid 3He

We study the odd-frequency Cooper pairs formed near the surface of superfluid 3He. The odd-frequency pair amplitude is closely related to the local density of states in the low energy limit. We derive a formula relating explicitly the two quantities. This formula holds for arbitrary boundary condition at the surface. We also present some numerical results on the surface odd-frequency pair amplitude in superfluid 3He-B. Those analytical and numerical results allow one to interpret the midgap surface density of states, observed recently by transverse acoustic impedance measurements on superfluid 3He-B, as the manifestation of the surface odd-frequency state.

Surface Majorana Cone of the Superfluid $^3$He B Phase

The superfluid $^3$He B phase, one of the oldest unconventional fermionic condensates experimentally realized, is recently predicted to support Majorana fermion surface states. Majorana fermion, which is characterized by the equivalence of particle and antiparticle, has a linear dispersion relation referred to as the Majorana cone. We measured the transverse acoustic impedance $Z$ of the superfluid$^3$He B phase changing its boundary condition and found a growth of peak in $Z$ on a higher specularity wall. Our theoretical analysis indicates that the variation of $Z$ is induced by the formation of the cone-like dispersion relation and thus confirms the important feature of the Majorana fermion in the specular limit.

Evolution of an Unconventional Superconducting State inside the Antiferromagnetic Phase of CeNiGe$_3$ under Pressure: a $^{73}$Ge-Nuclear-Quadrupole-Resonance Study

We report a $^{73}$Ge nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) study on novel evolution of unconventional superconductivity in antiferromagnetic (AFM) CeNiGe$_3$. The measurements of the $^{73}$Ge-NQR spectrum and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) have revealed that the unconventional superconductivity evolves inside a commensurate AFM phase around the pressure ($P$) where Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ exhibits its maximum at 8.5 K. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm SC}$ has been found to be enhanced with increasing $T_{\rm N}$, before reaching the quantum critical point at which the AFM order collapses. Above $T_{\rm SC}$, the AFM structure transits from an incommensurate spin-density-wave order to a commensurate AFM order at $T\sim 2$ K, accompanied by a longitudinal spin-density fluctuation. With regard to heavy-fermion compounds, these novel phenomena have hitherto never been reported in the $P$-$T$ phase diagram.

Enhancement of Superconducting Transition Temperature due to the strong Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in Non-centrosymmetric Heavy-fermion Superconductor CeIrSi3 :A 29Si-NMR Study under Pressure

We report a 29Si-NMR study on the pressure-induced superconductivity (SC) in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) heavy-fermion compound CeIrSi3 without inversion symmetry. In the SC state at P=2.7-2.8 GPa, the temperature dependence of the nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 below Tc exhibits a T^3 behavior without any coherence peak just below Tc, revealing the presence of line nodes in the SC gap. In the normal state, 1/T_1 follows a \sqrt{T}-like behavior, suggesting that the SC emerges under the non-Fermi liquid state dominated by AFM spin fluctuations enhanced around quantum critical point (QCP). The reason why the maximum Tc in CeIrSi3 is relatively high among the Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors may be the existence of the strong AFM spin fluctuations. We discuss the comparison with the other Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors.

Underbarrier nucleation kinetics in a metastable quantum liquid near the spinodal

We develop a theory in order to describe the effect of relaxation in a condensed medium upon the quantum decay of a metastable liquid near the spinodal at low temperatures. We find that both the regime and the rate of quantum nucleation strongly depend on the relaxation time and its temperature behavior. The quantum nucleation rate slows down with the decrease of the relaxation time. We also discuss the low temperature experiments on cavitation in normal $^3$He and superfluid $^4$He at negative pressures. It is the sharp distinctions in the high frequency sound mode and in the temperature behavior of the relaxation time that make the quantum cavitation kinetics in $^3$He and $^4$He completely different in kind.
