Band gaps and phonons of quasi-bulk rocksalt ScN

ScN is an emerging transition metal nitride with unique physical properties arising from the d-electrons of Sc. In this work we present the results of optical characterization techniques spectroscopic ellipsometry, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements of a 40 $\mu$m thick, fully relaxed, and only weakly n-type doped ($n = 1.2 \times 10^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$) ScN film deposited by halide vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) on r-sapphire substrate. Spectroscopic ellipsometry yields an indirect bandgap of 1.1 eV while the lowest direct interband transition is observed at $E_\mathrm{g,opt} = $ 2.16 eV in the dielectric function. A broad luminescence feature at 2.15 eV is observed, matching this transition. We derive an estimate for the exciton binding energy ($E_{bX}\approx $14 meV) as well as the Born effective charges $Z_\mathrm{Sc}^* = -Z_\mathrm{N}^* = 3.78$. In the infrared spectral region we observe a strong phonon and a weak plasmon absorption. We precisely determine the transverse optical phonon eigenfrequency ($\omega_\mathrm{TO} = $340.7 cm$^{-1}$), the high frequency dielectric constant ($\varepsilon_\infty = 8.3$) and the static dielectric constant ($\varepsilon_\mathrm{stat} = 29.5$). Raman measurements using various excitation energies show resonant multi-phonon scattering up to 6LO (6th order overtone for longitudinal optical (LO) phonons) for excitation above the optical band gap ($E_\mathrm{Laser} > E_\mathrm{g,opt}$), where the allowed 2LO scattering is the dominant scattering mechanism for all excitation energies. Their characteristic parameters determined from Lorentzian line shape fitting yield $\omega_\mathrm{LO} = $681 cm$^{-1}$ and an increased broadening and reduced asymmetry for higher LO scattering order $n$.

Evidence of Low-Energy Singlet Excited States in the Spin-1/2 Polyhedral Clusters {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} and {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with Strongly Frustrated Kagomé Networks

Magnetization, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements are carried out to clarify the low-energy excitations for the S = 1/2 polyhedral clusters {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} and {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$}. The clusters provide unique model systems of Kagomé network on a quasi-sphere. The linear field variation of magnetization at low temperatures indicates that the ground state is singlet for both clusters. The temperature and the magnetic field dependence of specific heat shows a distinct difference between two clusters with differing structural symmetries. In {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with I$_h$ symmetry, the existence of the several tens of low-energy singlet excited states below the lowest triplet excited state is revealed. The specific heat of the slightly distorted {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with D$_{5h}$ symmetry leads to a drastic decrease of the singlet contribution, which is consistent with the partial lifting of the frustration and the decrease of degenerated low-energy states. The singlet excitation existence is confirmed further by the temperature dependence of the ESR spectra. Comprehensive experimental studies have demonstrated unique low-energy excitations of the spherical Kagomé networks and their sensitivity to the cluster symmetry.

Observation of a new field-induced phase transition and its concomitant quantum critical fluctuations in CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$)$_5$

We demonstrate a close connection between observed field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and quantum critical fluctuation (QCF) in the Zn7%-doped heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5. Magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity at low temperatures all show the presence of new field-induced AFM order under the magnetic field B of 5-10 T, whose order parameter is clearly distinguished from the low-field AFM phase observed for B < 5 T and the superconducting phase for B < 3 T. The 4f electronic specific heat divided by the temperature, C_e/T, exhibits -lnT dependence at B~10 T (= B_0), and furthermore, the C_e/T data for B >= B_0 are well scaled by the logarithmic function of B and T: ln[(B-B_0)/T^{2.7}]. These features are quite similar to the scaling behavior found in pure CeCoIn5, strongly suggesting that the field-induced QCF in pure CeCoIn5 originates from the hidden AFM order parameter equivalent to high-field AFM order in Zn7%-doped CeCoIn5.

Novel Pauli-paramagnetic quantum phase in a Mott insulator

In Mott insulators, the strong electron-electron Coulomb repulsion prevents metallicity and charge excitations are gapped. In dimensions greater than one, their spins are usually ordered antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Geometrical frustrations can destroy this long-range order, leading to exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. However, their magnetic ground states have been a long-standing mystery. Here we show that a QSL state in the organic Mott insulator EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ with two-dimensional triangular lattice has Pauli-paramagnetic-like low-energy excitations, which are a hallmark of itinerant fermions. Our torque magnetometry down to low temperatures (30 mK) up to high fields (32 T) reveal distinct residual paramagnetic susceptibility comparable to that in a half-filled two-dimensional metal. This demonstrates that the system is in a magnetically gapless ground state, a critical state with infinite magnetic correlation length. Moreover, our results are robust against deuteration, pointing toward the emergence of an extended `quantum critical phase', in which low-energy spin excitations behave as in paramagnetic metals with Fermi surface, despite the frozen charge degree of freedom.

Heat capacity uncovers physics of a frustrated spin tube

We report on refined experimental results concerning the low-temperature specific heat of the frustrated spin tube material [(CuCl2tachH)3Cl]Cl2. This substance turns out to be an unusually perfect spin tube system which allows to study the physics of quasi-one dimensional antiferromagnetic structures in rather general terms. An analysis of the specific heat data demonstrates that at low enough temperatures the system exhibits a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior corresponding to an effective spin-3/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with short-range exchange interactions. On the other hand, at somewhat elevated temperatures the composite spin structure of the chain is revealed through a Schottky-type peak in the specific heat located around 2 K. We argue that the dominating contribution to the peak originates from gapped magnon-type excitations related to the internal degrees of freedom of the rung spins.

Magnetic field-induced phase transitions in a weakly coupled s = 1/2 quantum spin dimer system Ba$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$

By using bulk magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), heat capacity, and neutron scattering techniques, we characterize the thermodynamic and quantum phase diagrams of Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Our ESR measurements indicate that the low field paramagnetic ground state is a mixed state of the singlet and the S$_z$ = 0 triplet for $H \perp c$. This suggests the presence of an intra-dimer Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction with a DM vector perpendicular to the c-axis.

EMR Measurements of Field-Induced Superconductor lamda-(BETS)2FexGa1-xCl4

We have performed high-field Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR) measurements of lamda-(BETS)2FexGa1-xCl4 to clarify the role of Pi- and d-electrons in the paramagnetic (PM) and field-induced superconducting (FISC) phases. We found that this system has a non-negligible Pi-d interaction that is very sensitive to the sample cooling rate. The Pi-d interaction is weaker when the sample is rapidly cooled which might affect its FISC phase. The results of the organic alloy lamda-(BETS)2FexGa1-xCl4 (x=0.6) will be presented in this paper.

Magnetism and electron spin resonance in single crystalline beta-AgNpO2(SeO3)

We report magnetization, susceptibility, electrical transport, and electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of single crystals of beta-AgNpO2(SeO3). Here the valence of the Np sites is expected to be Np(V). We observe a magnetic transition below 8 K, where the transition temperature is dependent on the effective magnetic moment. Although the transition appears to be ferromagnetic, no hysteresis is seen in the magnetization, and the saturation moment above 0.1 T is found to be about 60% of the free NpO2 ion moment. The decrease in the Np moments determined experimentally is thought to arise from crystal field and spin-orbit effects. Although Np(V) is expected to be ESR silent, we observe temperature dependent ESR spectra at ~44 GHz (for fields above the saturation field) that show slight shifts in the g-factor and line width at low temperatures. Our results provide evidence that both Np(V) and Np(IV) valences are present, where the latter may be a minority population. The crystals, although dark in appearance, are electrically insulating (rho > 10^10 Ohm-cm) at room temperature.

High Frequency EPR Spectroscopy of Germanium Cuprate. I. The Case of Doping with Cobalt

Resonant magnetoabsorption spectra for CuGeO3 single crystals containing 2% of Co impurity are studied in the frequency range 60-360 GHz in magnetic field up to 16 T at temperatures 2-60 K. It is found that together with the resonance on Cu2+ chains a new absorption line related with Co2+ ions appears in EPR spectrum. The full set of spectroscopic data (g-factors, linewidths, integrated intensities) have been determined for both resonances. The obtained results exhibit considerable deviations from the universal scenario of doping for CuGeO3 and discussed in the frames of the models of the quantum critical behavior and the three-dimensional antiferromagnet with the reduced by disorder Neel temperature. The Oshikawa and Affleck theory for EPR in 1D S=1/2 AF spin chain is compared with experiment.

High Field ESR Study of the pi-d Correlated Organic Conductor lambda-(BETS)2Fe0.6Ga0.4Cl4

Submillimeter and millimeter wave electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements of the pi-d correlated organic conductor lambda-(BETS)2Fe0.6Ga0.4Cl4 have been performed. Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) has been observed in the insulating antiferromagnetic phase, and its frequency-field dependence can be reproduced by the biaxial anisotropic AFMR theory. We find that in this alloy system, the easy-axis is near the b-axis, unlike previous results for the pure lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 salts where it is closer to the c*-axis. We have also observed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in the metallic phase at higher fields where the g-value is shown to be temperature and frequency dependent for field applied along the c*-axis. This behavior indicates the existence of strong pi-d interaction. Our measurements further show the magnetic anisotropy associated with the anions (the D term in the spin Hamiltonian) is |D|~0.11 cm-1.

Quantum critical point in CuGeO3 doped with magnetic impurities

Using high frequency (up to 450 GHz) ESR and low temperature specific heat measurements we find that insertion of 1% Fe and 2% Co damps spin-Peierls and Neel transitions and for T<30K gives rise to onset of a quantum critical behaviour characteristic for a random dimer Griffiths phase.

Fermi Surface Study of Quasi-Two-Dimensional Organic Conductors by Magnetooptical Measurements

Magnetooptical measurements of several quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) organic conductors, which have simple Fermi surface structure, have been performed by using a cavity perturbation technique. Despite of the simple Fermi surface structure, magnetooptical resonance results show a dramatic difference for each sample. Cyclotron resonances (CR) were observed for q-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 and (BEDT-TTF)3Br(pBIB), while periodic orbit resonances (POR) were observed for (BEDT-TTF)2Br(DIA) and (BEDT-TTF)3Cl(DFBIB). The selection of the resonance seems to correspond with the skin depth for each sample. The effective mass of POR seems to have a mass enhancement due to the many-body effect, while effective mass of CR is independent of the strength of the electron-electron interaction. The scattering time deduced from each resonance's linewidth will be also presented.

Hall coefficient of La$_{1.88-y}$Y$_y$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ ($y=0, 0.04$) at low temperatures under high magnetic fields

The Hall coefficient in the low-temperature tetragonal phase and the mid-temperature orthorhombic phase of La$_{1.88-y}$Y$_y$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ ($y=0, 0.04$) single crystals is measured under high magnetic fields up to 9 T in order to investigate the detailed behavior of the transport properties at low temperatures in the stripe phase. When the superconductivity is suppressed by high magnetic fields, the Hall coefficient has negative values in low temperatures, and the temperature region of the negative values spreads as increasing magnetic fields. This result indicates that the Hall coefficient in the stripe phase around $x=0.12$ is a finite negative value, not zero.

Observation of High-Order Harmonic Resonances in Magnetooptical Measurements of (BEDT-TTF)2Br(DIA)

Magnetooptical measurements of a quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) organic conductor (BEDT-TTF)2Br(DIA) (DIA=diiodoacetylene) were performed using a cavity perturbation technique with a millimeter vector network analyzer (MVNA). Harmonic resonances were observed periodically as a function of the inverse field up to the 7th order. This is the first observation of higher-order harmonics up to the 7th order in an organic conductor. The observed resonance is assigned as a periodic orbit resonance (POR) which arises from a q2D elliptic Fermi surface (FS). The obtained effective mass (4.7me) is consistent with Shubnikov-de Haas measurements. Temperature dependence of the spectra observed in two different sample configurations will be presented.

Decay of spin-Peierls state in CuGeO3:Fe. The case of a strong disorder

Influence of doping by iron impurity on spin-Peierls state in CuGeO3 is studied. ESR measurements for the frequency/temperature domain 60-450 GHz/ 1.8-300 K and specific heat data obtained for the interval 6-20 K show that insertion of 1% of Fe completely destroy both spin-Peierls and antiferromagnetic orders. Damping of long-range magnetic order is accompanied by onset at T<20 K of power asymptotics for magnetic susceptibility chi~T^-alpha and magnetic part of specific heat cm~T^(1-alpha), with the index alpha=0.35-0.37. This effect is characteristic to the limit of strong disorder for doped CuGeO3 and may reflect formation of the Griffiths phase at low temperatures in CuGeO3:Fe.
