Carbon-doped ZnO: A New Class of Room Temperature Dilute Magnetic Semiconductor

We report magnetism in carbon doped ZnO. Our first-principles calculations based on density functional theory predicted that carbon substitution for oxygen in ZnO results in a magnetic moment of 1.78 $μ_B$ per carbon. The theoretical prediction was confirmed experimentally. C-doped ZnO films deposited by pulsed laser deposition with various carbon concentrations showed ferromagnetism with Curie temperatures higher than 400 K, and the measured magnetic moment based on the content of carbide in the films ($1.5 - 3.0 μ_B$ per carbon) is in agreement with the theoretical prediction. The magnetism is due to bonding coupling between Zn ions and doped C atoms. Results of magneto-resistance and abnormal Hall effect show that the doped films are $n$-type semiconductors with intrinsic ferromagnetism. The carbon doped ZnO could be a promising room temperature dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) and our work demonstrates possiblity of produing DMS with non-metal doping.

Graphitic-BN Based Metal-free Molecular Magnets From A First Principle Study

We perform a first principle calculation on the electronic properties of carbon doped graphitic boron nitride graphitic BN. It was found that carbon substitution for either boron or nitrogen atom in graphitic BN can induce spontaneous magnetization. Calculations based on density functional theory with the local spin density approximation on the electronic band structure revealed a spin polarized, dispersionless band near the Fermi energy. Spin density contours showed that the magnetization density originates from the carbon atom. The magnetization can be attributed to the carbon 2p electron. Charge density distribution shows that the carbon atom forms covalent bonds with its three nearest neighbourhood. The spontaneous magnetization survives the curvature effect in BN nanotubes, suggesting the possibility of molecular magnets made from BN. Compared to other theoretical models of light-element or metal-free magnetic materials, the carbon-doped BN are more experimentally accessible and can be potentially useful.

Magnetism in BN nanotubes induced by Carbon Substitution

We performed ab initio calculation on the pristine and carbon-doped (5,5) and (9,0) BN nanotubes. It was found that Carbon substitution for either boron or nitrogen in BN nanotubes can induce spontaneous magnetization. Calculations based on density functional theory with the local-spin-density-approximation on the electronic band structure revealed a spin polarized, dispersionless band near the Fermi energy. The magnetization can be attributed to the carbon 2p electron. Compared to other theoretical models of light-element or metal-free magnetic materials, the Carbon-doped BN nanotubes are more experimentally accessible and can be potentially useful.

Q-Factor Measurement of Nonlinear Superconducting Resonators

A novel method, which combined a multi-bandwidth measurement and an extrapolation procedure, is proposed for extracting the loaded Q-factor (Q_{L}) with improved accuracy from non-Lorentzian resonances of nonlinear superconducting resonators.

Hysteresis measurement of anomalous microwave surface resistance in superconducting thin films

The anomalous decrease in microwave surface resistance, R_{s}, of superconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-d} (YBCO) thin films in the presence of a low dc magnetic field is studied using a microstrip resonator technique. We have done a dc field hysteresis measurement of R_{s} to study the effects of vortex penetration on the anomalous effect. It is shown that the anomaly happens at a field level far below the low critical field, H_{c1,strip}, of the superconducting microstrip and vortex (Abrikosov) penetration would eliminate the anomalous effect observed at low field. This implies that the anomalous effect is not contributed by vortices.

Anomalous microwave response of high-temperature superconducting thin-film microstrip resonator in weak dc magnetic fields

We have studied an anomalous microwave (mw) response of superconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta} (YBCO) microstrip resonators in the presence of a weak dc magnetic field, H_{dc}. The surface resistance (R_{s}) and reactance (X_{s}) show a correlated non-monotonic behaviour as a function of H_{dc}. R_{s} and X_{s} were found to initially decrease with elevated H_{dc} and then increase after H_{dc} reaches a crossover field, H_{c}, which is independent of the amplitude and frequency of the input mw signal within the measurements. The frequency dependence of R_{s} is almost linear at fixed H_{dc} with different magnitudes ( H_{c}). The impedance plane analysis demonstrates that r_{H}, which is defined as the ratio of the change in R_{s}(H_{dc}) and that in X_{s}(H_{dc}), is about 0.6 at H_{dc} H_{c}. The H_{dc} dependence of the surface impedance is qualitatively independent of the orientation of H_{dc}.
