High-pressure floating zone crystal growth of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Here we demonstrate the floating zone crystal growth of the $J_\mathrm{eff}=1/2$ Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Historically, the growth of iridates from a ternary melt has been precluded by the extreme vapor pressure of the metal oxide species and the difficulty of maintaining the correct oxidation state of Ir at high temperatures. Here, we show that the application of a high-pressure oxygen growth environment stabilizes the Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ phase, leading to the first demonstration of cm$^{3}$-scale crystals. In contrast to the conventional SrCl$_2$ flux growth method, where poor control over disorder leads to strong sample dependence, the high-pressure floating zone growth enables active control over the homogeneity of the melt. Crystals grown via this technique possess qualitatively similar properties to those grown via flux, with a relatively sharp onset of antiferromagnetic order observed in temperature-dependent magnetization. Further, we demonstrate that by tuning the mixing rate of the melt, we are able to grow natively hole-doped Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-y}$O$_4$, which exhibits a strongly modified magnetic and electronic response.

Carbon price fluctuation prediction using blockchain information A new hybrid machine learning approach

In this study, the novel hybrid machine learning approach is proposed in carbon price fluctuation prediction. Specifically, a research framework integrating DILATED Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network algorithm is proposed. The advantage of the combined framework is that it can make feature extraction more efficient. Then, based on the DILATED CNN-LSTM framework, the L1 and L2 parameter norm penalty as regularization method is adopted to predict. Referring to the characteristics of high correlation between energy indicator price and blockchain information in previous literature, and we primarily includes indicators related to blockchain information through regularization process. Based on the above methods, this paper uses a dataset containing an amount of data to carry out the carbon price prediction. The experimental results show that the DILATED CNN-LSTM framework is superior to the traditional CNN-LSTM architecture. Blockchain information can effectively predict the price. Since parameter norm penalty as regularization, Ridge Regression (RR) as L2 regularization is better than Smoothly Clipped Absolute Deviation Penalty (SCAD) as L1 regularization in price forecasting. Thus, the proposed RR-DILATED CNN-LSTM approach can effectively and accurately predict the fluctuation trend of the carbon price. Therefore, the new forecasting methods and theoretical ecology proposed in this study provide a new basis for trend prediction and evaluating digital assets policy represented by the carbon price for both the academia and practitioners.

Do all identically conserved geometric tensors come from actions? A status report

Noether's theorem, that local gauge variations of gauge invariant actions are identically conserved (more tautologically, that gauge variations of gauge invariants vanish) was established a century ago. Its converse, in the geometric context: are all identically conserved local symmetric tensors variations of some coordinate invariant action? remains unsolved to this day. We survey its present state and discuss some of our concrete attempts at a solution, including a significant improvement. For notational simplicity, details are primarily given in $D=2$, but we discuss generic $D$ as well.

Magnetospheric Multiscale Observations of Electron Vortex Magnetic Hole in the Magnetosheath Turbulent Plasma

We report the observations of an electron vortex magnetic hole corresponding to a new type of coherent structures in the magnetosheath turbulent plasma using the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission data. The magnetic hole is characterized by a magnetic depression, a density peak, a total electron temperature increase (with a parallel temperature decrease but a perpendicular temperature increase), and strong currents carried by the electrons. The current has a dip in the center of the magnetic hole and a peak in the outer region of the magnetic hole. The estimated size of the magnetic hole is about 0.23 \r{ho}i (~ 30 \r{ho}e) in the circular cross-section perpendicular to its axis, where \r{ho}i and \r{ho}e are respectively the proton and electron gyroradius. There are no clear enhancement seen in high energy electron fluxes, but an enhancement in the perpendicular electron fluxes at ~ 90{\deg} pitch angles inside the magnetic hole is seen, implying that the electron are trapped within it. The variations of the electron velocity components Vem and Ven suggest that an electron vortex is formed by trapping electrons inside the magnetic hole in the circular cross-section (in the M-N plane). These observations demonstrate the existence of a new type of coherent structures behaving as an electron vortex magnetic hole in turbulent space plasmas as predicted by recent kinetic simulations.

Suppression of magnetoresistance in thin $WTe_2$ flakes by surface oxidation

Recent renewed interest in layered transition metal dichalcogenides stems from the exotic electronic phases predicted and observed in the single- and few-layer limit. Realizing these electronic phases requires preserving the desired transport properties down to a monolayer, which is challenging. Here, using semimetallic $WTe_2$ that exhibits large magnetoresistance, we show that surface oxidation and Fermi level pinning degrade the transport properties of thin $WTe_2$ flakes significantly. With decreasing $WTe_2$ flake thickness, we observe a dramatic suppression of the large magnetoresistance. This is explained by fitting a two-band model to the transport data, which shows that mobility of the electron and hole carriers decreases significantly for thin flakes. The microscopic origin of this mobility decrease is attributed to a ~ 2 nm-thick amorphous surface oxide layer that introduces disorder. The oxide layer also shifts the Fermi level by ~ 300 meV at the $WTe_2$ surface. However, band bending due to this Fermi level shift is not the dominant cause for the suppression of magnetoresistance as the electron and hole carrier densities are balanced down to ~ 13 nm based on the two-band model. Our study highlights the critical need to investigate often unanticipated and sometimes unavoidable extrinsic surface effects on the transport properties of layered dichalcogenides and other 2D materials.

Correlation Functions in $ω$-Deformed N=6 Supergravity

Gauged N=8 supergravity in four dimensions is now known to admit a deformation characterized by a real parameter $ω$ lying in the interval $0\leω\le π/8$. We analyse the fluctuations about its anti-de Sitter vacuum, and show that the full N=8 supersymmetry can be maintained by the boundary conditions only for $ω=0$. For non-vanishing $ω$, and requiring that there be no propagating spin s>1 fields on the boundary, we show that N=3 is the maximum degree of supersymmetry that can be preserved by the boundary conditions. We then construct in detail the consistent truncation of the N=8 theory to give $ω$-deformed SO(6) gauged N=6 supergravity, again with $ω$ in the range $0\leω\le π/8$. We show that this theory admits fully N=6 supersymmetry-preserving boundary conditions not only for $ω=0$, but also for $ω=π/8$. These two theories are related by a U(1) electric-magnetic duality. We observe that the only three-point functions that depend on $ω$ involve the coupling of an SO(6) gauge field with the U(1) gauge field and a scalar or pseudo-scalar field. We compute these correlation functions and compare them with those of the undeformed N=6 theory. We find that the correlation functions in the $ω=π/8$ theory holographically correspond to amplitudes in the U(N)_k x U(N)_{-k} ABJM model in which the U(1) Noether current is replaced by a dynamical U(1) gauge field. We also show that the $ω$-deformed N=6 gauged supergravities can be obtained via consistent reductions from the eleven-dimensional or ten-dimensional type IIA supergravities.

An $ω$ Deformation of Gauged STU Supergravity

Four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ gauged STU supergravity is a consistent truncation of the standard ${\cal N}=8$ gauged $SO(8)$ supergravity in which just the four $U(1)$ gauge fields in the Cartan subgroup of $SO(8)$ are retained. One of these is the graviphoton in the ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity multiplet and the other three lie in three vector multiplets. In this paper we carry out the analogous consistent truncation of the newly-discovered family of $ω$-deformed ${\cal N}=8$ gauged $SO(8)$ supergravities, thereby obtaining a family of $ω$-deformed STU gauged supergravities. Unlike in some other truncations of the deformed ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity that have been considered, here the scalar potential of the deformed STU theory is independent of the $ω$ parameter. However, it enters in the scalar couplings in the gauge-field kinetic terms, and it is non-trivial because of the minimal couplings of the fermion fields to the gauge potentials. We discuss the supersymmetry transformation rules in the $ω$-deformed supergravities, and present some examples of black hole solutions.

Kinetic Turbulence in the Terrestrial Magnetosheath: Cluster Observations

We present a first statistical study of subproton and electron scales turbulence in the terrestrial magnetosheath using the Cluster Search Coil Magnetometer (SCM) waveforms of the STAFF instrument measured in the frequency range [1,180] Hz. It is found that clear spectral breaks exist near the electron scale, which separate two power-law like frequency bands referred to as the dispersive and the electron dissipation ranges. The frequencies of the breaks f_b are shown to be well correlated with the electron gyroscale ρ_e rather than with the electron inertial length de. The distribution of the slopes below fb was found to be narrow and peaks near -2.9, while that of the slopes above fb was found broader, peaks near -5.2 and has values as low as -7.5. This is the first time that such steep power-law spectra are reported in space plasma turbulence. These observations provide strong constraints on theoretical modeling of kinetic turbulence and dissipation in collisionless magnetized plasmas.

AdS Dyonic Black Hole and its Thermodynamics

We obtain spherically-symmetric and $\R^2$-symmetric dyonic black holes that are asymptotic to anti-de Sitter space-time (AdS), which are solutions in maximal gauged four-dimensional supergravity, with just one of the U(1) fields carrying both the electric and magnetic charges $(Q,P)$. We study the thermodynamics, and find that the usually-expected first law does not hold unless P=0, Q=0 or P=Q. For general values of the charges, we find that the first law requires a modification with a new pair of thermodynamic conjugate variables. We show that they describe the scalar hair that breaks some of the asymptotic AdS symmetries.

Black Holes in Six-dimensional Conformal Gravity

We study conformally-invariant theories of gravity in six dimensions. In four dimensions, there is a unique such theory that is polynomial in the curvature and its derivatives, namely Weyl-squared, and furthermore all solutions of Einstein gravity are also solutions of the conformal theory. By contrast, in six dimensions there are three independent conformally-invariant polynomial terms one could consider. There is a unique linear combination (up to overall scale) for which Einstein metrics are also solutions, and this specific theory forms the focus of our attention in this paper. We reduce the equations of motion for the most general spherically-symmetric black hole to a single 5th-order differential equation. We obtain the general solution in the form of an infinite series, characterised by 5 independent parameters, and we show how a finite 3-parameter truncation reduces to the already known Schwarzschild-AdS metric and its conformal scaling. We derive general results for the thermodynamics and the first law for the full 5-parameter solutions. We also investigate solutions in extended theories coupled to conformally-invariant matter, and in addition we derive some general results for conserved charges in cubic-curvature theories in arbitrary dimensions.

Spectrum of Higher Derivative 6D Chiral Supergravity

Gauged off-shell Maxwell-Einstein supergravity in six dimensions with N=(1,0) supersymmetry has a higher derivative extension afforded by a supersymmetrized Riemann squared term. This theory admits a supersymmetric Minkowski x S^2 compactification with a U(1) monopole of unit charge on S^2. We determine the full spectrum of the theory on this background. We also determine the spectrum on a non-supersymmetric version of this compactification in which the monopole charge is different from unity, and we find the peculiar feature that there are massless gravitini in a representation of the S^2 isometry group determined by the monopole charge.

AdS and Lifshitz Black Holes in Conformal and Einstein-Weyl Gravities

We study black hole solutions in extended gravities with higher-order curvature terms, including conformal and Einstein-Weyl gravities. In addition to the usual AdS vacuum, the theories admit Lifshitz and Schrödinger vacua. The AdS black hole in conformal gravity contains an additional parameter over and above the mass, which may be interpreted as a massive spin-2 hair. By considering the first law of thermodynamics, we find that it is necessary to introduce an associated additional intensive/extensive pair of thermodynamic quantities. We also obtain new Liftshitz black holes in conformal gravity and study their thermodynamics. We use a numerical approach to demonstrate that AdS black holes beyond the Schwarzschild-AdS solution exist in Einstein-Weyl gravity. We also demonstrate the existence of asymptotically Lifshitz black holes in Einstein-Weyl gravity. The Lifshitz black holes arise at the boundary of the parameter ranges for the AdS black holes. Outside the range, the solutions develop naked singularities. The asymptotically AdS and Lifshitz black holes provide an interesting phase transition, in the corresponding boundary field theory, from a relativistic Lorentzian system to a non-relativistic Lifshitz system.

Pbar Annihilation in Au+Au at AGS Energies

Antinucleon production in heavy ion collisions is potentially an excellent signal for unusual phenomena in hot and dense matter. However, at the low energies available at the AGS the annihilation process must be handled with care. In this Comment, we consider the case of Au + Au collisions at approximately 11 GeV/c, applying the ARC treatment of pbar production and annihilation to the analysis of experiment E878. It is apparent that classical screening introduced for Si + Au is crucial in the understanding of data obtained with the more massive projectile. Unfortunately, there seems no necessity for invoking unusual behaviour in the Au + Au system.

Flow at AGS Energies: A Barometer for High Density Effects?

Preliminary data on transverse energy `flow' and event asymmetries reported by the E877(814) collaborations are compared to ARC model calculations for Au+Au at full AGS beam energy. ARC triple differential cross-sections for protons and pions are presented. Proton flow is produced in ARC, with the maximum in-plane momentum about 120 MeV/c. For central events the directed momentum for pions is near zero, consistent with experiment. Pion momentum opposite to the nucleons' is evident in a peripheral sample, however, indicating that this pion `anti-flow' involves absorption by `spectator' matter. `Squeeze-out' of protons in central events at mid-rapidity is suggested by the ARC distributions.

Modeling Cluster Production at the AGS

Deuteron coalescence, during relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, is carried out in a model incorporating a minimal quantal treatment of the formation of the cluster from its individual nucleons by evaluating the overlap of intial cascading nucleon wave packets with the final deuteron wave function. In one approach the nucleon and deuteron center of mass wave packet sizes are estimated dynamically for each coalescing pair using its past light-cone history in the underlying cascade, a procedure which yields a parameter free determination of the cluster yield. A modified version employing a global estimate of the deuteron formation probability, is identical to a general implementation of the Wigner function formalism but can differ from the most frequent realisation of the latter. Comparison is made both with the extensive existing E802 data for Si+Au at 14.6 GeV/c and with the Wigner formalism. A globally consistent picture of the Si+Au measurements is achieved. In light of the deuteron's evident fragility, information obtained from this analysis may be useful in establishing freeze-out volumes and help in heralding the presence of high-density phenomena in a baryon-rich environment.

Noncompact Lattice Formulation of Gauge Theories

We expand the gauge field in terms of a suitably constructed complete set of Bloch wave functions, each labeled by a band designation $\,n\,$ and a wave number $\,\vec K\,$ restricted to the Brillouin zone. A noncompact formulation of lattice QCD (or QED) can be derived by restricting the expansion only to the $\,0^{th}$-band ($\,n = 0\,$) functions, which are simple continuum interpolations of discrete values associated with sites or links on a lattice. The exact continuum theory can be reached through the inclusion of all $\,n = 0\,$ and $\,n \ne 0\,$ bands, without requiring the lattice size $\,\ell \to 0\,$. This makes it possible, at a nonzero $\,\ell\,$, for the lattice coupling $\,g_\ell\,$ to act as the renormalized continuum coupling. All physical results in the continuum are, of course, independent of $\,\ell\,$.
