Anomalous 4$f$ fine structure in TmSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ across the metal-insulator transition

Hybridization between localized 4$f$ and itinerant 5$d$6$s$ states in heavy fermion compounds is a well-studied phenomenon and commonly captured by the paradigmatic Anderson model. However, the investigation of additional electronic interactions, beyond the standard Anderson model, has been limited, despite their predicted important role in the exotic quasiparticle formation in mixed-valence systems. We investigate the 4$f$ states in TmSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ throughout a semimetal-insulator phase transition, which drastically varies the interactions related to the 4$f$ states. Using synchrotron-based hard x-ray and extreme ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, we resolve subtle peak splitting in the 4$f$ peaks near the Fermi level in the mixed-valent semimetal phase. The separation is enhanced by several tens of meV by increasing the lattice parameter by a few percent. Our results elucidate the evolving nature of the 4$f$ state across the phase transition, and provide direct experimental evidence for electronic interactions beyond the standard Anderson model in mixed-valence systems.

On Jacobian group and complexity of the Y-graph

In the present paper we suggest a simple approach for counting Jacobian group of the $Y$-graph $Y(n; k, l, m).$ In the case $Y(n; 1, 1, 1)$ the structure of the Jacobian group will be find explicitly. Also, we obtain a closed formula for the number of spanning trees of $Y$-graph in terms of Chebyshev polynomials and give its asymtotics.

On complexity of cyclic coverings of graphs

By complexity of a finite graph we mean the number of spanning trees in the graph. The aim of the present paper is to give a new approach for counting complexity $τ(n)$ of cyclic $n$-fold coverings of a graph. We give an explicit analytic formula for $τ(n)$ in terms of Chebyshev polynomials and find its asymptotic behavior as $n\to\infty$ through the Mahler measure of the associated voltage polynomial. We also prove that $F(x)=\sum\limits_{n=1}^\inftyτ(n)x^n$ is a rational function with integer coefficients.

Evidence for a Field-induced Quantum Spin Liquid in $α$-RuCl$_3$

We report a $^{35}$Cl nuclear magnetic resonance study in the honeycomb lattice, $α$-RuCl$_3$, a material that has been suggested to potentially realize a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state. Our results provide direct evidence that $α$-RuCl$_3$ exhibits a magnetic field-induced QSL. For fields larger than $\sim 10$ T a spin-gap opens up while resonance lines remain sharp, evidencing that spins are quantum disordered and locally fluctuating. The spin gap increases linearly with increasing magnetic field, reaching $\sim50$ K at 15 T, and is nearly isotropic with respect to the field direction. The unusual rapid increase of the spin gap with increasing field and its isotropic nature are incompatible with conventional magnetic ordering and in particular exclude that the ground state is a fully polarized ferromagnet. The presence of such a field-induced, gapped QSL phase has indeed been predicted in the Kitaev model.

Relation between Kitaev magnetism and structure in $α$-RuCl$_3$

Raman scattering has been employed to investigate lattice and magnetic excitations of the honeycomb Kitaev material $α$-RuCl$_3$ and its Heisenberg counterpart CrCl$_3$. Our phonon Raman spectra give evidence for a first-order structural transition from a monoclinic to a rhombohedral structure for both compounds. Significantly, only $α$-RuCl$_3$ features a large thermal hysteresis, consistent with the formation of a wide phase of coexistence. In the related temperature interval of $70-170$ K, we observe a hysteretic behavior of magnetic excitations as well. The stronger magnetic response in the rhombohedral compared to the monoclinic phase evidences a coupling between the crystallographic structure and low-energy magnetic response. Our results demonstrate that the Kitaev magnetism concomitant with fractionalized excitations is susceptible to small variations of bonding geometry.

Electron-boson spectral density of LiFeAs obtained from optical data

We analyze existing optical data in the superconducting state of LiFeAs at $T =$ 4 K, to recover its electron-boson spectral density. A maximum entropy technique is employed to extract the spectral density $I^2χ(ω)$ from the optical scattering rate. Care is taken to properly account for elastic impurity scattering which can importantly affect the optics in an $s$-wave superconductor, but does not eliminate the boson structure. We find a robust peak in $I^2χ(ω)$ centered about $Ω_R \cong$ 8.0 meV or 5.3 $k_B T_c$ (with $T_c =$ 17.6 K). Its position in energy agrees well with a similar structure seen in scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). There is also a peak in the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data at this same energy. This peak is found to persist in the normal state at $T =$ 23 K. There is evidence that the superconducting gap is anisotropic as was also found in low temperature angular resolved photoemission (ARPES) data.

Superconducting properties and pseudogap from preformed Cooper pairs in the triclinic (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$Pt$_3$As$_8$

Using a combination of muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR), inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), we investigated the novel iron-based superconductor with a triclinic crystal structure (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$Pt$_3$As$_8$ (T$_{\rm c}$ = 13 K), containing platinum-arsenide intermediary layers. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from the $μ$SR relaxation-rate measurements indicates the presence of two superconducting gaps, $Δ_\text{1}\ggΔ_\text{2}$. According to our INS measurements, commensurate spin fluctuations are centered at the ($π$, 0) wave vector, like in most other iron arsenides. Their intensity remains unchanged across T$_\text{c}$, indicating the absence of a spin resonance typical for many Fe-based superconductors. Instead, we observed a peak in the spin-excitation spectrum around $\hslashω_0=\,$7 meV at the same wave vector, which persists above T$_{\rm c}$ and is characterized by the ratio $\hslashω_0/k_\text{B}T_\text{c}\approx\,$6.2, which is significantly higher than typical values for the magnetic resonant modes in iron pnictides (~4.3). The temperature dependence of magnetic intensity at 7 meV revealed an anomaly around T* = 45 K related to the disappearance of this new mode. A suppression of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_1T$, observed by NMR immediately below T* without any notable subsequent anomaly at T$_{\rm c}$, indicates that T* could mark the onset of a pseudogap in (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$Pt$_3$As$_8$, which is likely associated with the emergence of preformed Cooper pairs.

Fermi Surface Variation of Ce 4f-electrons in Hybridization Controlled Heavy-Fermion Systems

Ce 3d-4f resonant angle-resolved photoemission measurements on CeCoGe$_{1.2}$Si$_{0.8}$ and CeCoSi$_{2}$ have been performed to understand the Fermi surface topology as a function of hybridization strength between Ce 4$f$- and conduction electrons in heavy-fermion systems. We directly observe that the hole-like Ce 4$f$-Fermi surfaces of CeCoSi$_{2}$ is smaller than that of CeCoGe$_{1.2}$Si$_{0.8}$, indicating the evolution of the Ce 4$f$-Fermi surface with the increase of the hybridization strength. In comparision with LDA calculation, the Fermi surface variation cannot be understood even though the overall electronic structure are roughly explained, indicating the importance of strong correlation effects. We also discuss the relation between the Ce 4$f$-Fermi surface variation and the Kondo peaks.

Anomalous Superconducting-Gap Structure of Slightly Overdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We observed the anisotropic superconducting-gap (SC-gap) structure of a slightly overdoped superconductor, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x=0.1$), using three-dimensional (3D) angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Two hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) observed at the Brillouin zone center and an inner electron FS at the zone corner showed a nearly isotropic SC gap in 3D momentum space. However, the outer electron FS showed an anisotropic SC gap with nodes or gap minima around the M and A points. The different anisotropies obtained the SC gap between the outer and inner electron FSs cannot be expected from all theoretical predictions with spin fluctuation, orbital fluctuation, and both competition. Our results provide a new insight into the SC mechanisms of iron pnictide superconductors.

Superconductivity-induced Phonon Renormalization on NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As

We report a study of the lattice dynamics in superconducting NaFeAs (Tc = 8 K) and doped NaFe0.97Co0.03As (Tc = 20 K) using Raman light scattering. Five of the six phonon modes expected from group theory are observed. In contrast with results obtained on iso-structural and iso-electronic LiFeAs, anomalous broadening of Eg(As) and A1g(Na) modes upon cooling is observed in both samples. In addition, in the Co-doped sample, a superconductivity-induced renormalization of the frequency and linewidth of the B1g(Fe) vibration is observed. This renormalization can not be understood within a single band and simple multi-band approaches. A theoretical model that includes the effects of SDW correlations along with sign-changing s-wave pairing state and interband scattering has been developed to explain the observed behavior of the B1g(Fe) mode.

Effects of pressure on the ferromagnetic state of the CDW compound SmNiC2

We report the pressure response of charge-density-wave (CDW) and ferromagnetic (FM) phases of the rare-earth intermetallic SmNiC2 up to 5.5 GPa. The CDW transition temperature (T_{CDW}), which is reflected as a sharp inflection in the electrical resistivity, is almost independent of pressure up to 2.18 GPa but is strongly enhanced at higher pressures, increasing from 155.7 K at 2.2 GPa to 279.3 K at 5.5 GPa. Commensurate with the sharp increase in T_{CDW}, the first-order FM phase transition, which decreases with applied pressure, bifurcates into the upper (T_{M1}) and lower (T_c) phase transitions and the lower transition changes its nature to second order above 2.18 GPa. Enhancement both in the residual resistivity and the Fermi-liquid T^2 coefficient A near 3.8 GPa suggests abundant magnetic quantum fluctuations that arise from the possible presence of a FM quantum critical point.

Magnetic origin of high-energy kink structure in heavily electron-doped Li$_{1+x}$FeAs

We report the origin of a high-energy kink structure of heavily electron-doped nonsuperconducting Li$_{1+x}$FeAs observed by three-dimensional angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The $d_{xy}$ orbital at the center of the Brillouin zone is strongly renormalized, indicating stronger electron correlation, exceeding that of stoichiometric LiFeAs despite the fact that the orbital characters of all bands remain unchanged. Two types of kink structure on the $d_{yz}$ band were identified: an isotropic kink at the binding energy of 20 meV, and another kink located at 100 meV observed only in the (110) direction. The higher-energy kink is considered to originate from a magnetic interaction, because the peak energy is consistent with that of a spin excitation.

Spatially developing turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate

This fluid dynamics video submitted to the Gallery of Fluid motion shows a turbulent boundary layer developing under a 5 metre-long flat plate towed through water. A stationary imaging system provides a unique view of the developing boundary layer as it would form over the hull of a ship or fuselage of an aircraft. The towed plate permits visualisation of the zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer as it develops from the trip to a high Reynolds number state ($Re_τ\approx 3000$). An evolving large-scale coherent structure will appear almost stationary in this frame of reference. The visualisations provide an unique view of the evolution of fundamental processes in the boundary layer (such as interfacial bulging, entrainment, vortical motions, etc.). In the more traditional laboratory frame of reference, in which fluid passes over a stationary body, it is difficult to observe the full evolution and lifetime of turbulent coherent structures. An equivalent experiment in a wind/water-tunnel would require a camera and laser that moves with the flow, effectively `chasing' eddies as they advect downstream.

Similar zone-center gaps in the low-energy spin-wave spectra of NaFeAs and BaFe2As2

We report results of inelastic-neutron-scattering measurements of low-energy spin-wave excitations in two structurally distinct families of iron-pnictide parent compounds: Na(1-δ)FeAs and BaFe2As2. Despite their very different values of the ordered magnetic moment and Néel temperatures, T_N, in the antiferromagnetic state both compounds exhibit similar spin gaps of the order of 10 meV at the magnetic Brillouin-zone center. The gap opens sharply below T_N, with no signatures of a precursor gap at temperatures between the orthorhombic and magnetic phase transitions in Na(1-δ)FeAs. We also find a relatively weak dispersion of the spin-wave gap in BaFe2As2 along the out-of-plane momentum component, q_z. At the magnetic zone boundary (q_z = 0), spin excitations in the ordered state persist down to 20 meV, which implies a much smaller value of the effective out-of-plane exchange interaction, J_c, as compared to previous estimates based on fitting the high-energy spin-wave dispersion to a Heisenberg-type model.

Evidence for +-s-wave pairing symmetry in LiFeAs: specific heat study

We report specific heat capacity measurements on a LiFeAs single crystal at temperatures down to 400 mK and magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla. A small specific heat jump at Tc and finite residual density of states at T=0 K in the superconducting (SC) state indicate that there are strong unitary scatterers that lead to states within the SC gap. A sub-linear magnetic field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient γ(H) at T=0 K is equally well fitted by both a nodal d-wave gap as well as a sign changing multiband \pm s-wave gap. When impurity effects are taken into account, however, the linear temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat C_{el}/T at low temperatures argues against a nodal d-wave superconducting gap. We conclude that the SC state of LiFeAs is most compatible with the multiband \pm s-wave SC state with the gap values Δ_{small}=0.46 Δ_{large}.

Raman Scattering Study of the Lattice Dynamics of Superconducting LiFeAs

We report an investigation of the lattice dynamical properties of LiFeAs using inelastic light scattering. Five out of the six expected phonon modes are observed. The temperature evolution of their frequencies and linewidths is in good agreement with an anharmonic-decay model. We find no evidence for substantial electron-phonon coupling, and no superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies.

Fermi Surface Reconstruction in CeTe2 Induced by Charge Density Wave: ARPES Study

Electronic structures of a charge-density-wave CDW system CeTe_2-xSb_x (x=0, 0.05) have been investigated by employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The observed Fermi surface (FS) agrees very well with the calculated FS for the undistorted CeTe_2 both in shapes and sizes. The metallic states crossing the Fermi level(E_F) are observed in ARPES. The carriers near E_F have mainly the Te(1) 5p character, with the negligible contribution from Ce 4f states to the CDW formation. The supercell (shadow) bands and the corresponding very weak FS's are found to arise from band-folding due to the interaction with Ce-Te(2) layers. This work shows that the origin of the CDW formation in CeTe_2 is the FS nesting and that the CDW modulation vector is along Gamma-X (Q_CDW ~ X)
