Strong-coupling Effects in cuprate High-$T_{c}$ Superconductors by magnetooptical studies

Signatures of strong coupling effects in cuprate high-$T_{c}$ superconductors have been authenticated through a variety of spectroscopic probes. However, the microscopic nature of relevant excitations has not been agreed upon. Here we report on magneto-optical studies of the CuO$_{2}$ plane carrier dynamics in a prototypical high-$T_{c}$ superconductor YBa$%_{2} $Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (YBCO). Infrared data are directly compared with earlier inelastic neutron scattering results by Dai \textit{et al}. [Nature (London) \textbf{406}, 965 (2000)] revealing a characteristic depression of the magnetic resonance in H $\parallel $ \textit{c} field less than 7 T. This analysis has allowed us to critically assess the role of magnetic degrees of freedom in producing strong coupling effects for YBCO system.

A Spectroscopic Study of the Ancient Milky Way: F- and G-Type Stars in the Third Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

(Abridged) We perform an analysis of spectra and photometry for 22,770 stars included in the third data release (DR3) of the SDSS. We measure radial velocities and, based on a model-atmosphere analysis, derive estimates ofthe atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and [Fe/H]) for each star. Stellar evolution models are then used to estimate distances. The SDSS sample covers a range in stellar brightness of 14 < V < 22, and comprises large numbers of F- and G-type stars from the thick-disk and halo populations (up to 100 kpc from the galactic plane), therefore including some of the oldest stars in the Milky Way. In agreement with previous results from the literature, we find that halo stars exhibit a broad range of iron abundances, with a peak at [Fe/H] ~ -1.4. This population exhibits essentially no galactic rotation. Thick-disk G-dwarf stars at distances from the galactic plane in the range 1<|z|<3 kpc show a much more compact metallicity distribution, with a maximum at [Fe/H] ~ -0.7, and a median galactic rotation velocity at that metallicity of 157 +/- 4 km/s (a lag relative to the thin disk of 63 km/s). A comparison of color indices and metal abundances with isochrones indicates that no significant star formation has taken place in the halo in the last ~ 11 Gyr, but there are thick-disk stars which are at least 2 Gyr younger. We find the metallicities of thick-disk stars to be nearly independent of galactocentric distance between 5 and 14 kpc, in contrast with the marked gradients found in the literature for the thin disk. No vertical metallicity gradient is apparent for the thick disk, but we detect a gradient inits rotational velocity of -16 +/- 4 km/s/kpc between 1 and 3 kpc from the plane.

Constant effective mass across the phase diagram of high-T$_{c}$ cuprates

We investigate the hole dynamics in two prototypical high temperature superconducting systems: La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}% $O$_{y}$ using a combination of DC transport and infrared spectroscopy. By exploring the effective spectral weight obtained with optics in conjunction with DC Hall results we find that the transition to the Mott insulating state in these systems is of the "vanishing carrier number" type since we observe no substantial enhancement of the mass as one proceeds to undoped phases. Further, the effective mass remains constant across the entire underdoped regime of the phase diagram. We discuss the implications of these results for the understanding of both transport phenomena and pairing mechanism in high-T$_{c}$ systems.

Electrodynamics of the Nodal Metal in Weakly Doped High-$T_{c}$ Cuprates

We report on the detailed analysis of the infrared (IR) conductivity of two prototypical high-$T_{c}$ systems YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$%_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ throughout the complex phase diagram of these compounds. Our focus in this work is to thoroughly document the electromagnetic response of the nodal metal state which is initiated with only few holes doped in parent antiferromagnetic systems and extends up to the pseudogap boundary in the phase diagram. The key signature of the nodal metal is the two-component conductivity: the Drude mode at low energies followed by a resonance in mid-IR. The Drude component can be attributed to the response of coherent quasiparticles residing on the Fermi arcs detected in photoemission experiments. The microscopic origin of the mid-IR band is yet to be understood. A combination of transport and IR data uncovers fingerprints of the Fermi liquid behavior in the response of the nodal metal. The comprehensive nature of the data sets presented in this work allows us to critically re-evaluate common approaches to the interpretation of the optical data. Specifically we re-examine the role of magnetic excitations in generating electronic self energy effects through the analysis of the IR data in high magnetic field.

Neutron scattering study of novel magnetic order in Na0.5CoO2

We report polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic order in single crystals of Na0.5CoO2. Our data indicate that below T_N=88 K the spins form a novel antiferromagnetic pattern within the CoO2 planes, consisting of alternating rows of ordered and non-ordered Co ions. The domains of magnetic order are closely coupled to the domains of Na ion order, consistent with such a two-fold symmetric spin arrangement. Magnetoresistance and anisotropic susceptibility measurements further support this model for the electronic ground state.

Field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in underdoped La(2-x)SrxCuO4

We report the observation of a magnetic-field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in slightly under-doped La(2-x)SrxCuO4 with x=0.144. Static incommensurate spin-density-wave order is induced above a critical field of about 3 T, as measured by elastic neutron scattering. Our results allow us to constrain the location of a quantum critical point on the phase diagram.

Coherence and superconductivity in coupled one-dimensional chains: a case study of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$

We report the infrared (IR) response of Cu-O chains in the high-$T_{c}$ superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ over the doping range spanning $% y=6.28-6.75$. We find evidence for a power law scaling at mid-IR frequencies consistent with predictions for Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, thus supporting the notion of one-dimensional transport in the chains. We analyze the role of coupling to the CuO$_{2}$ planes in establishing metallicity and superconductivity in disordered chain fragments.

Spin chirality on a two-dimensional frustrated lattice

The collective behavior of interacting magnetic moments can be strongly influenced by the topology of the underlying lattice. In geometrically frustrated spin systems, interesting chiral correlations may develop that are related to the spin arrangement on triangular plaquettes. We report a study of the spin chirality on a two-dimensional geometrically frustrated lattice. Our new chemical synthesis methods allow us to produce large single crystal samples of KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2, an ideal Kagome lattice antiferromagnet. Combined thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements reveal that the phase transition to the ordered ground-state is unusual. At low temperatures, application of a magnetic field induces a transition between states with different non-trivial spin-textures.

Spin gap formation in the quantum spin systems TiOX, X=Cl and Br

In the layered quantum spin systems TiOCl and TiOBr the magnetic susceptibility shows a very weak temperature dependence at high temperatures and transition-induced phenomena at low temperatures. There is a clear connection of the observed transition temperatures to the distortion of the octahedra and the layer separation. Band structure calculations point to a relation of the local coordinations and the dimensionality of the magnetic properties. While from magnetic Raman scattering only a small decrease of the magnetic exchange by -5-10% is derived comparing TiOCl with TiOBr, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility favors a much bigger change.

Magnetic susceptibility study of hydrated and non-hydrated NaxCoO2-yH2O single crystals

We have measured the magnetic susceptibility of single crystal samples of non-hydrated NaxCoO2 (x ~ 0.75, 0.67, 0.5, and 0.3) and hydrated Na0.3CoO2-yH2O (y ~ 0, 0.6, 1.3). Our measurements reveal considerable anisotropy between the susceptibilities with H||c and H||ab. The derived anisotropic g-factor ratio (g_ab/g_c) decreases significantly as the composition is changed from the Curie-Weiss metal with x = 0.75 to the paramagnetic metal with x = 0.3. Fully hydrated Na0.3CoO2-1.3H2O samples have a larger susceptibility than non-hydrated Na0.3CoO2 samples, as well as a higher degree of anisotropy. In addition, the fully hydrated compound contains a small additional fraction of anisotropic localized spins.

Structural transition in NaxCoO2 with x near 0.75 due to Na rearrangement

We report neutron powder diffraction measurements on a series of NaxCoO2 samples with x near 0.75 which were prepared under different synthesis conditions. Two different crystal structures for the samples are observed at room temperature. The two structures differ primarily by a shift of a large fraction of the Na ions from a high-symmetry position to a lower-symmetry position. Close inspection of the refinement parameters indicates that the presence of either structure depends sensitively on the Na content x, with x = 0.75 as the critical concentration separating the two phases. By raising the temperature to around T = 323 K, the high-symmetry structure can be converted to the lower-symmetry structure. The transition is reversible, but there is significant hysteresis. We discuss the effects of this structural transition on the bulk magnetic and transport properties.

Electrochemical De-intercalation, Oxygen Non-stoichiometry, and Crystal Growth of NaxCoO2-d

We report a detailed study of de-intercalation of Na from the compound NaxCoO2-d using an electrochemical technique. We find evidence for stable phases with Na contents near the fractions ~1/3, 1/2, 5/8, 2/3, and 3/4. Details regarding the floating-zone crystal growth of Na0.75CoO2 single crystals are discussed as well as results from magnetic susceptibility measurements. We observe the presence of significant oxygen deficiencies in powder samples of Na0.75CoO2-d prepared in air, but not in single crystal samples prepared in an oxygen atmosphere. The oxygen deficiencies in a Na0.75CoO2-d sample with d ~ 0.08 remain even after electrochemically de-intercalating to Na0.3CoO2-d.

Evidence for an incommensurate magnetic resonance in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

We study the effect of a magnetic field (applied along the c-axis) on the low-energy, incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in superconducting La(1.82)Sr(0.18)CuO(4). The incommensurate peaks at 9 meV, which in zero-field were previously shown to sharpen in q on cooling below T_c [T. E. Mason et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 1604 (1996)], are found to broaden in q when a field of 10 T is applied. The applied field also causes scattered intensity to shift into the spin gap. We point out that the response at 9 meV, though occurring at incommensurate wave vectors, is comparable to the commensurate magnetic resonance observed at higher energies in other cuprate superconductors.

Thermodynamic properties of excess-oxygen-doped La2CuO4.11 near a simultaneous transition to superconductivity and long-range magnetic order

We have measured the specific heat and magnetization {\it versus} temperature in a single crystal sample of superconducting La$_{2}$CuO$_{4.11}$ and in a sample of the same material after removing the excess oxygen, in magnetic fields up to 15 T. Using the deoxygenated sample to subtract the phonon contribution, we find a broad peak in the specific heat, centered at 50 K. This excess specific heat is attributed to fluctuations of the Cu spins possibly enhanced by an interplay with the charge degrees of freedom, and appears to be independent of magnetic field, up to 15 T. Near the superconducting transition $T_{c}$($H$=0)= 43 K, we find a sharp feature that is strongly suppressed when the magnetic field is applied parallel to the crystallographic c-axis. A model for 3D vortex fluctuations is used to scale magnetization measured at several magnetic fields. When the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the c-axis, the only observed effect is a slight shift in the superconducting transition temperature.

Neutron scattering study of the effects of dopant disorder on the superconductivity and magnetic order in stage-4 La_2CuO_{4+y}

We report neutron scattering measurements of the structure and magnetism of stage-4 La_2CuO_{4+y} with T_c ~42 K. Our diffraction results on a single crystal sample demonstrate that the excess oxygen dopants form a three-dimensional ordered superlattice within the interstitial regions of the crystal. The oxygen superlattice becomes disordered above T ~ 330 K, and a fast rate of cooling can freeze-in the disordered-oxygen state. Hence, by controlling the cooling rate, the degree of dopant disorder in our La_2CuO_{4+y} crystal can be varied. We find that a higher degree of quenched disorder reduces T_c by ~ 5 K relative to the ordered-oxygen state. At the same time, the quenched disorder enhances the spin density wave order in a manner analogous to the effects of an applied magnetic field.

Effect of a magnetic field on long-range magnetic order in stage-4 and stage-6 superconducting La2CuO(4+y)

We have measured the enhancement of the static incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) order by an applied magnetic field in stage-4 and stage-6 samples of superconducting La2CuO(4+y). We show that the stage-6 La2CuO(4+y) (Tc=32 K) forms static long-range SDW order with the same wave-vector as that in the previously studied stage-4 material. We have measured the field dependence of the SDW magnetic Bragg peaks in both stage-4 and stage-6 materials at fields up to 14.5 T. A recent model of competing SDW order and superconductivity describes these data well.

Spin Wave Propagation in the Domain State of a Random Field Magnet

Inelastic neutron scattering with high wave-vector resolution has characterized the propagation of transverse spin wave modes near the antiferromagnetic zone center in the metastable domain state of a random field Ising magnet. A well-defined, long wavelength excitation is observed despite the absence of long-range magnetic order. Direct comparisons with the spin wave dispersion in the long-range ordered antiferromagnetic state reveal no measurable effects from the domain structure. This result recalls analogous behavior in thermally disordered anisotropic spin chains but contrasts sharply with that of the phonon modes in relaxor ferroelectrics.

Electron and orbital correlations in Ca_{2-x}Sr_{x}RuO_{4} probed by optical spectroscopy

The doping and temperature dependent optical conductivity spectra of the quasi-two-dimensional Ca_{2-x}Sr_xRuO_4 (0.0=<x=<2.0) system were investigated. In the Mott insulating state, two electron correlation-induced peaks were observed around 1.0 and 1.9 eV, which could be understood in terms of the 3-orbital Hubbard model. The low frequency peak showed a shift toward higher frequency as temperature was lowered, which indicated that electron-phonon interactions play an important role in the orbital arrangements. From the systematic analysis, it was suggested that the antiferro-orbital and the ferro-orbital ordering states could coexist.
