Microlensing optical depth towards the Galactic bulge from MOA observations during 2000 with Difference Image Analysis

We analyze the data of the gravitational microlensing survey carried out by by the MOA group during 2000 towards the Galactic Bulge (GB). Our observations are designed to detect efficiently high magnification events with faint source stars and short timescale events, by increasing the the sampling rate up to 6 times per night and using Difference Image Analysis (DIA). We detect 28 microlensing candidates in 12 GB fields corresponding to 16 deg^2. We use Monte Carlo simulations to estimate our microlensing event detection efficiency, where we construct the I-band extinction map of our GB fields in order to find dereddened magnitudes. We find a systematic bias and large uncertainty in the measured value of the timescale $t_{\rm Eout}$ in our simulations. They are associated with blending and unresolved sources, and are allowed for in our measurements. We compute an optical depth tau = 2.59_{-0.64}^{+0.84} \times 10^{-6} towards the GB for events with timescales 0.3 10). These events are useful for studies of extra-solar planets.

Hole-Doping Effects on a Two-dimensional Kondo Insulator

We study the effects of hole doping on the two-dimensional Heisenberg-Kondo model around the quantum critical point, where the spin liquid phase (Kondo insulator) and the magnetically ordered phase are separated via a second-order phase transition. By means of the self-consistent Born approximation within the bond operator formalism as well as the standard spin wave theory, we discuss dynamical properties of a doped hole. It is clarified that a quasi-particle state stabilized in the spin liquid phase is gradually obscured as the system approaches the quantum critical point. This is also the case for the magnetically ordered phase. We argue the similarity and the difference between these two cases.

Optical Spectropolarimetry of SN 2002ap: High Velocity Asymmetric Explosion

We present spectropolarimetry of the Type Ic supernova SN 2002ap and give a preliminary analysis: the data were taken at two epochs, close to and one month later than the visual maximum (2002 February 8). In addition we present June 9 spectropolarimetry without analysis. The data show the development of linear polarization. Distinct polarization profiles were seen only in the O I λ7773 multiplet/Ca II IR triplet absorption trough at maximum light and in the Ca II IR triplet absorption trough a month later, with the latter showing a peak polarization as high as ~2 %. The intrinsic polarization shows three clear position angles: 80 degs for the February continuum, 120 degs for the February line feature, and 150 degs for the March data. We conclude that there are multiple asymmetric components in the ejecta. We suggest that the supernova has a bulk asymmetry with an axial ratio projected on the sky that is different from 1 by of order 10 %. Furthermore, we suggest very speculatively that a high velocity ejecta component moving faster than ~0.115c (e.g., a jet) contributes to polarization in the February epoch.

Step Repulsion Mediates Wandering on a Si(001) Vicinal Face

With a Si(001) vicinal surface in mind, we study step wandering instability on a vicinal surface with an anisotropic surface diffusion whose orientation dependence alternates on each consecutive terrace. In a conserved system step wandering takes place with step-up adatom drift. Repulsive interaction between steps is found indispensable for the instability. Monte Carlo simulation with a strong repulsive step interaction confirms the result of linear stability analysis, and further shows that in-phase step wandering produces straight grooves. Grooves widen as their amplitudes increase in proportion to the square root of time.

A New High-Redshift Lyman alpha Emitter: Possible Superwind Galaxy at z = 5.69

During the course of our deep optical imaging survey for Ly alpha emitters at z approximately 5.7 in the field around the z=5.74 quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2, we have found a candidate strong emission-line source. Follow-up optical spectroscopy shows that the emission line profile of this object is asymmetric, showing excess red-wing emission. These properties are consistent with an identification of Ly alpha emission at a redshift of z=5.687 +/- 0.002. The observed broad line width, Delta V_{FWHM} ~= 340 km s^{-1} and excess red-wing emission also suggest that this object hosts a galactic superwind.

Atmospheric gamma-ray observation with the BETS detectorfor calibrating atmospheric neutrino flux calculations

We observed atmospheric gamma-rays around 10 GeV at balloon altitudes (15~25 km) and at a mountain (2770 m a.s.l). The observed results were compared with Monte Carlo calculations to find that an interaction model (Lund Fritiof1.6) used in an old neutrino flux calculation was not good enough for describing the observed values. In stead, we found that two other nuclear interaction models, Lund Fritiof7.02 and dpmjet3.03, gave much better agreement with the observations. Our data will serve for examining nuclear interaction models and for deriving a reliable absolute atmospheric neutrino flux in the GeV region.

Force measurements of a superconducting-film actuator for a cryogenic interferometric gravitational-wave detector

We measured forces applied by an actuator with a YBCO film at near 77 K for the Large-scale Cryogenic Gravitational-wave Telescope (LCGT) project. An actuator consisting of both a YBCO film of 1.6 micrometers thickness and 0.81 square centimeters area and a solenoid coil exerted a force of up to 0.2 mN on a test mass. The presented actuator system can be used to displace the mirror of LCGT for fringe lock of the interferometer.

Improving the Prospects for Detecting Extrasolar Planets in Gravitational Microlensing in 2002

Gravitational microlensing events of high magnification have been shown to be promising targets for detecting extrasolar planets. However, only a few events of high magnification have been found using conventional survey techniques. Here we demonstrate that high magnification events can be readily found in microlensing surveys using a strategy that combines high frequency sampling of target fields with online difference imaging analysis. We present 10 microlensing events with peak magnifications greater than 40 that were detected in real-time towards the Galactic Bulge during 2001 by MOA. We show that Earth mass planets can be detected in future events such as these through intensive follow-up observations around the event peaks. We report this result with urgency as a similar number of such events are expected in 2002.

ASCA Detection of Pulsed X-ray Emission from PSR J0631+1036

ASCA's long look at the 288 millisecond radio pulsar, PSR J0631+1036, reveals coherent X-ray pulsation from this source for the first time. The source was first detected in the serendipitous Einstein observation and later identified as a radio pulsar. Possible pulsation in the gamma-ray band has been detected from the CGRO EGRET data (Zepka, et al. 1996). The X-ray spectrum in the ASCA band is characterized by a hard power-law type emission with a photon index of about 2.3, when fitted with a single power-law function modified with absorption. An additional blackbody component of about 0.14 keV increases the quality of the spectral fit. The observed X-ray flux is 2.1e-13 ergs/s/cm2 in the 1-10 keV band. We find that many characteristics of PSR J0631+1036 are similar to those of middle-aged gamma-ray pulsars such as PSR B1055-52, PSR B0633+17 (Geminga), and PSR B0656+14.

Subaru Deep Survey I. Near-Infrared Observations

Deep near-infrared images of a blank 2'x2' section of sky near the Galactic north pole taken by Subaru Telescope are presented. The total integration times of the J and K' bands are 12.1 hours and 9.7 hours, resulting in 5-sigma limiting magnitudes of 25.1 and 23.5 mag, respectively. The numbers of sources within these limiting magnitudes found with an automated detection procedure are 385 in the J band and 350 in K'. Based on photometric measurements of these sources, we present number count vs. magnitude relations, color vs. magnitude diagrams, size vs. color relationships, etc. The slope of the galaxy number count plotted against the AB magnitude scale is about 0.23 in the 22 to 26 AB magnitude range of both bands. The spatial number density of galaxies as well as the slopes in the faint-end region given by the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) survey is consistent with those given by HST-NICMOS surveys as expressed on the AB magnitude diagram. Several sources having very large J-K' color are found including a few K' objects without detection at J. In addition, a number of faint Galactic stars are also detected, most of which are assigned to M-subdwarfs, together with a few brown dwarf candidates.

Development of the 50-Mev DTL for the Jaeri/Kek Joint Project

An Alvaretz-type DTL, to accelerate the H- ion beam from 3 to 50 MeV, is being constructed as the injector for the JAERI/KEK Joint Project. The following components of the DTL have been developed: (1) a cylindrical tank, made by copper electroforming; (2) rf contactors; (3) a pulse-excited quadrupole magnet with a hollow coil made by copper electroforming; (4) a switching-regulator-type pulsed-power supply for the quadrupole magnet. High-power tests of the components have been conducted using a short-model tank. Moreover a breakdown experiment of the copper electrodes has been carried out in order to study the properties of several kinds of copper materials.

X-Ray Observation of the L1157 Dark Cloud Region with ASCA

ASCA observation of a region containing a Class 0 protostar, IRAS 20386+6751 in the L1157 dark cloud, has been carried out. The protostar was not detected, and the 95% upper limit to the luminosity depends on assumed Nh : Lx(0.5-10 keV) < 1.1e31 erg/s for Nh = 1e23 cm^-2. A Class I protostar in L1152, IRAS 20353+6742, in the same field was also undetected with the upper limit about three times as much as the L1157 level. Besides these non detections, nine new X-ray sources were detected and spectral analysis was performed for 4 sources. One object (AXJ 2038+6801) shows a hard spectrum with a temperature kT = 8 keV or a power-law photon index = 2.0 and absorbed with Nh = 2e22 cm^-2. Another fainter one (AXJ 2036+6800) has a soft spectrum with most of the emission falling below 2 keV. We examine possible nature of these new X-ray sources based on their spectral properties.

A Dark Cloud Associated an Unidentified EGRET Source

CO J=1-0 mapping observations of the dark nebula Lynds 227, which is possibly associated with the unidentified EGRET source 2EG J1811-2339, are presented. We detected a large amount of molecular gas along Lynds 227 with a total mass of (1-2)E4 Msun surrounding an X-ray synchrotron nebula, which was detected by the ASCA satellite within the error circle of 2EG J1811-2339. Molecular gas along Lynds 227 shows spatial anti-correlation with the X-ray synchrotron nebula, suggesting that the synchrotron nebula is interacting with the Lynds 227 cloud. We propose a $γ$-ray emission mechanism for 2EG J1811-2339: High energy electrons are injected from a rotation-powered pulsar and accelerated further in shock waves generated by the interaction with ambient matter. The high energy electrons move into the molecular cloud at the Lynds 227 and collide with dense interstellar matter to yield high energy $γ$-ray photons, mainly through relativistic bremsstrahlung.

RXTE Absolute Timing Results for the Pulsars B1821-24 and B1509-58

Observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and the Jodrell Bank, Parkes, and Green Bank telescopes have enabled us to determine the time delay between radio and X-ray pulses in the two isolated pulsars B1821-24 and B1509-58. For the former we find that the narrow X-ray and radio pulse components are close to being coincident in time, with the radio peak leading by 0.02 period (60 +/- 20 microsec), while the wide X-ray pulse component lags the last of the two wider radio components by about 0.08 period. For the latter pulsar we find, using the standard value for the dispersion measure, that the X-ray pulse lags the radio by about 0.27 period, with no evidence for any energy-dependence in the range 2-100 keV. However, uncertainties in the history of the dispersion measure for this pulsar make a comparison with previous results difficult. It is clear that there are no perceptable variations in either the lag or the dispersion measure at time scales of a year or less.

Toroidal actions on level 1 modules of U_q(\hat{sl_n})

Recently Varagnolo and Vasserot established that the q-deformed Fock spaces due to Hayashi, and Kashiwara, Miwa and Stern, admit actions of the quantum toroidal algebra $U_q(sl_n,tor)$ (n > 2) with the level (0,1). In the present article we propose a more detailed proof of this fact then the one given by Varagnolo and Vasserot. The proof is based on certain non-trivial properties of Cherednik's commuting difference operators. The quantum toroidal action on the Fock space depends on a certain parameter. We find that with a specific choice of this parameter the action on the Fock spaces gives rise to the toroidal action on irreducible level-1 highest weight modules of the affine quantum algebra $U_q(\hat{sl}_n)$. Similarly, by a specific choice of the parameter, the level (1,0) vertex representation of the quantum toroidal algebra gives rise to a $U_q(sl_n,tor)$-module structure on irreducible level-1 highest weight $U_q(\hat{sl}_n)$-modules.
