Squeezed light from a diamond-turned monolithic cavity

For some crystalline materials, a regime can be found where continuous ductile cutting is feasible. Using precision diamond turning, such materials can be cut into complex optical components with high surface quality and form accuracy. In this work we use diamond-turning to machine a monolithic, square-shaped, doubly-resonant $LiNbO_3$ cavity with two flat and two convex facets. When additional mild polishing is implemented, the Q-factor of the resonator is found to be limited only by the material absorption loss. We show how our monolithic square resonator may be operated as an optical parametric oscillator that is evanescently coupled to free-space beams via birefringent prisms. The prism arrangement allows for independent and large tuning of the fundamental and second harmonic coupling rates. We measure $2.6\pm0.5$ dB of vacuum squeezing at 1064 nm using our system. Potential improvements to obtain higher degrees of squeezing are discussed.

Existence, Stability and Dynamics of Discrete Solitary Waves in a Binary Waveguide Array

Recent work has explored binary waveguide arrays in the long-wavelength, near-continuum limit, here we examine the opposite limit, namely the vicinity of the so-called anti-continuum limit. We provide a systematic discussion of states involving one, two and three excited waveguides, and provide comparisons that illustrate how the stability of these states differ from the monoatomic limit of a single type of waveguide. We do so by developing a general theory which systematically tracks down the key eigenvalues of the linearized system. When we find the states to be unstable, we explore their dynamical evolution through direct numerical simulations. The latter typically illustrate, for the parameter values considered herein, the persistence of localized dynamics and the emergence for the duration of our simulations of robust quasi-periodic states for two excited sites. As the number of excited nodes increase, the unstable dynamics feature less regular oscillations of the solution's amplitude.

Quantum Čerenkov Effect from Hot Carriers in Graphene: An Efficient Plasmonic Source

Graphene plasmons (GPs) have been found to be an exciting plasmonic platform, thanks to their high field confinement and low phase velocity, motivating contemporary research to revisit established concepts in light-matter interaction. In a conceptual breakthrough that is now more than 80 years old, Čerenkov showed how charged particles emit shockwaves of light when moving faster than the phase velocity of light in a medium. To modern eyes, the Čerenkov effect (ČE) offers a direct and ultrafast energy conversion scheme from charge particles to photons. The requirement for relativistic particles, however, makes ČE-emission inaccessible to most nanoscale electronic and photonic devices. We show that GPs provide the means to overcome this limitation through their low phase velocity and high field confinement. The interaction between the charge carriers flowing inside graphene and GPs presents a highly efficient 2D Čerenkov emission, giving a versatile, tunable, and ultrafast conversion mechanism from electrical signal to plasmonic excitation.

Note on Nakayama automorphisms of PBW deformations and Hopf actions

PBW deformations of Artin-Schelter regular algebras are skew Calabi-Yau. We prove that the Nakayama automorphisms of such PBW deformations can be obtained from their homogenizations. Some Calabi-Yau properties are generalized without Koszul assumption. We also show that the Nakayama automorphisms of such PBW deformations control Hopf actions on them.

Dual Fano and Lorentzian line profile poperties of autoionizing states

Ott et al. (Science (340, 716 (2013)) successfully transferred Fano profile into Lorentzian lineshape using an intense infrared laser, after excitation of autoionizing states in helium by attosecond XUV pulse. This is a very important step forward of quantum phase control. However, here we show experimentally that an autoionizing state can have both Fano and Lorentzian behavior naturally, depending on the process involved. This study utilized the inverse process of photon absorption ionization, i.e. electron ion recombination with photon emission, making sure the resonant autoionizing state is not perturbed by the laser fields. Our result implies that excitation of the state through different paths can lead to different Fano profiles for the same resonant state. This allows more options for the combination of laser fields and lead to more opportunities for quantum phase control. Our result also indicates the breakdown of the classical two step picture for dielectronic recombination.

Semantic Modelling with Long-Short-Term Memory for Information Retrieval

In this paper we address the following problem in web document and information retrieval (IR): How can we use long-term context information to gain better IR performance? Unlike common IR methods that use bag of words representation for queries and documents, we treat them as a sequence of words and use long short term memory (LSTM) to capture contextual dependencies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that LSTM is applied to information retrieval tasks. Unlike training traditional LSTMs, the training strategy is different due to the special nature of information retrieval problem. Experimental evaluation on an IR task derived from the Bing web search demonstrates the ability of the proposed method in addressing both lexical mismatch and long-term context modelling issues, thereby, significantly outperforming existing state of the art methods for web document retrieval task.

Characterizing Traveling Wave Collisions in Granular Chains Starting from Integrable Limits: the case of the KdV and the Toda Lattice

Our aim in the present work is to develop approximations for the collisional dynamics of traveling waves in the context of granular chains in the presence of precompression. To that effect, we aim to quantify approximations of the relevant Hertzian FPU-type lattice through both the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and the Toda lattice. Using the availability in such settings of both 1-soliton and 2-soliton solutions in explicit analytical form, we initialize such coherent structures in the granular chain and observe the proximity of the resulting evolution to the underlying integrable (KdV or Toda) model. While the KdV offers the possibility to accurately capture collisions of solitary waves propagating in the same direction, the Toda lattice enables capturing both co-propagating and counter-propagating soliton collisions. The error in the approximation is quantified numerically and connections to bounds established in the mathematical literature are also given.

Traveling waves of the regularized short pulse equation

In the present work, we revisit the so-called regularized short pulse equation (RSPE) and, in particular, explore the traveling wave solutions of this model. We theoretically analyze and numerically evolve two sets of such solutions. First, using a fixed point iteration scheme, we numerically integrate the equation to find solitary waves. It is found that these solutions are well approximated by a truncated series of hyperbolic secants. The dependence of the soliton's parameters (height, width, etc) to the parameters of the equation is also investigated. Second, by developing a multiple scale reduction of the RSPE to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we are able to construct (both standing and traveling) envelope wave breather type solutions of the former, based on the solitary wave structures of the latter. Both the regular and the breathing traveling wave solutions identified are found to be robust and should thus be amenable to observations in the form of few optical cycle pulses.

Femtosecond Time-resolved MeV Electron Diffraction

We report the experimental demonstration of femtosecond electron diffraction using high-brightness MeV electron beams. High-quality, single-shot electron diffraction patterns for both polycrystalline aluminum and single-crystal 1T-TaS2 are obtained utilizing a 5 femto-Coulomb (~3x10^4 electrons) pulse of electrons at 2.8 MeV. The high quality of the electron diffraction patterns confirm that electron beam has a normalized emittance of ~50 nm-rad. The corresponding transverse and longitudinal coherence length are ~11 nm and ~2.5 nm, respectively. The timing jitter between the pump laser and probe electron beam was found to be ~ 100 fs (rms). The temporal resolution is demonstrated by observing the evolution of Bragg and superlattice peaks of 1T-TaS2 following an 800 nm optical pump and was found to be 130 fs. Our results demonstrate the advantages of MeV electron diffraction: such as longer coherent lengths, large scattering cross-section and larger signal-to-noise ratio, and the feasibility of ultimately realizing 10 fs time-resolved electron diffraction.

Regularity criterion and classification for algebras of Jordan type

We show that Artin-Schelter regularity of a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebra can be examined by its associated $\mathbb{Z}^r$-graded algebra. We prove that there is exactly one class of four-dimensional Artin-Schelter regular algebras with two generators of degree one in the Jordan case. This class is strongly noetherian, Auslander regular, and Cohen-Macaulay. Their automorphisms and point modules are described.

On relation between geometric momentum and annihilation operators on a two-dimensional sphere

With a recently introduced geometric momentum that depends on the extrinsic curvature and offers a proper description of momentum on two-dimensional sphere, we show that the annihilation operators whose eigenstates are coherent states on the sphere take the expected form αx+iβp, where α and β are two operators that depend on the angular momentum and x and p are the position and the geometric momentum, respectively. Since the geometric momentum is manifestly a consequence of embedding the two-dimensional sphere in the three-dimensional flat space, the coherent states reflects some aspects beyond the intrinsic geometry of the surfaces.

Ultrashort pulses and short-pulse equations in $(2+1)-$dimensions

In this paper, we derive and study two versions of the short pulse equation (SPE) in $(2+1)-$dimensions. Using Maxwell's equations as a starting point, and suitable Kramers-Kronig formulas for the permittivity and permeability of the medium, which are relevant, e.g., to left-handed metamaterials and dielectric slab waveguides, we employ a multiple scales technique to obtain the relevant models. General properties of the resulting $(2+1)$-dimensional SPEs, including fundamental conservation laws, as well as the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structure and numerical simulations for one- and two-dimensional initial data, are presented. Ultrashort 1D breathers appear to be fairly robust, while rather general two-dimensional localized initial conditions are transformed into quasi-one-dimensional dispersing waveforms.

Finite-temperature dynamics of matter-wave dark solitons in linear and periodic potentials: an example of an anti-damped Josephson junction

We study matter-wave dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperatures, under the effect of linear and periodic potentials. Our model, namely a dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation, is treated analytically by means of dark soliton perturbation theory, which results in a Newtonian equation of motion for the dark soliton center. This reduced model, which incorporates an effective washboard potential and an anti-damping term, constitutes an example of an anti-damped Josephson junction. We present a qualitative (local and global) analysis of the equation of motion. For sufficiently small wavenumbers of the periodic potential and weak linear potentials, the results are found to be in good agreement with pertinent ones obtained via a Bogoliubov-de Gennes analysis and direct numerical simulations.

Spatial solitons under competing linear and nonlinear diffractions

We introduce a general model which augments the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation by nonlinear-diffraction terms competing with the linear diffraction. The new terms contain two irreducible parameters and admit a Hamiltonian representation in a form natural for optical media. The equation serves as a model for spatial solitons near the supercollimation point in nonlinear photonic crystals. In the framework of this model, a detailed analysis of the fundamental solitary waves is reported, including the variational approximation (VA), exact analytical results, and systematic numerical computations. The Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) criterion is used to precisely predict the stability border for the solitons, which is found in an exact analytical form, along with the largest total power (norm) that the waves may possess. Past a critical point, collapse effects are observed, caused by suitable perturbations. Interactions between two identical parallel solitary beams are explored by dint of direct numerical simulations. It is found that in-phase solitons merge into robust or collapsing pulsons, depending on the strength of the nonlinear diffraction.

Short pulse equations and localized structures in frequency band gaps of nonlinear metamaterials

We consider short pulse propagation in nonlinear metamaterials characterized by a weak Kerr-type nonlinearity in their dielectric response. In the frequency "band gaps" (where linear electromagnetic waves are evanescent) with linear effective permittivity ε<0 and permeability μ>0, we derive two short-pulse equations (SPEs) for the high- and low-frequency band gaps. The structure of the solutions of the SPEs is also briefly discussed, and connections with the soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation are presented.

Suppression of the critical temperature of superconducting NdFeAs(OF) single crystals by Kondo-like defect sites induced by alpha-particle irradiation

We report a comprehensive investigation of the suppression of the critical temperature Tc of NdFeAs(OF) single crystal by alpha-particle irradiation. Our data indicate that irradiation defects produce both nonmagnetic and magnetic scattering, resulting in the Kondo-like excess resistance $Δρ(T)\propto ln T$ over 2 decades in temperatures above $T_c$. Despite high densities of irradiation defects, the dose at which $T_c$ is suppressed to zero is comparable to that for MgB2 but is well above the corresponding values for cuprates.

Effect of oxygen incorporation on normal and superconducting properties of MgB2 films

Oxygen was systematically incorporated in MBE grown MgB2 films using in-situ post-growth anneals in an oxygen environment. Connectivity analysis in combination with measurements of the critical temperature and resistivity indicate that oxygen is distributed both within and between the grains. High values of critical current densities in field (~4x10^5 A/cm^2 at 8 T and 4.2 K), extrabolated critical fields (>45 T) and slopes of critical field versus temperature (1.4 T/K) are observed. Our results suggest that low growth temperatures (300oC) and oxygen doping (>0.65%) can produce MgB2 with high Jc values in field and Hc2 for high-field magnet applications.

Study of Hadron Scattering Using an Asymmetric Box

We propose to study hadron-hadron scattering using lattice QCD in an asymmetric box which allows one to access more non-degenerate low-momentum modes for a given volume. The conventional Lüscher's formula applicable in a symmetric box is modified accordingly. To illustrate the feasibility of this approach, pion-pion elastic scattering phase shifts in the I=2, J=0 channel are calculated within quenched approximation using improved gauge and Wilson fermion actions on anisotropic lattices in an asymmetric box. After the chiral and continuum extrapolation, we find that our quenched results for the scattering phase shifts in this channel are consistent with the experimental data when the three-momentum of the pion is below 300MeV. Agreement is also found when compared with previous theoretical results from lattice and other means. Moreover, with the usage of asymmetric volume, we are able to compute the scattering phases in the low-momentum range (pion three momentum less than about 350MeV in the center of mass frame) for over a dozen values of the pion three-momenta, much more than using the conventional symmetric box with comparable volume.
