Incommensurate Chiral CDW in $1T$-VSe$_2$

We have investigated the chiral charge-density wave (CDW) in $1T$-VSe$_2$ using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements and optical polarimetry measurements. With the STM mesurements, we revealed that the CDW intensities along each triple-$q$ directions are different. Thus the rotational symmetry of $1T$-VSe$_2$ is lower than that in typical two-dimentional triple-$q$ CDWs. We found that the CDW peaks form a kagome lattice rather than a triangular lattice. The Friedel oscillations have the chirality and the periodicity reflected properties of the background CDW. With the optical measurements in $1T$-VSe$_2$, we also observed a lower rotational symmetry with the polarization dependence of the transient reflectivity variation, which is consistent with the STM result on a microscopic scale. Both $1T$-TiSe$_2$ and $1T$-VSe$_2$ show chiral CDWs, which implies that such waves are usual for CDWs with the condition $H_\mathrm{CDW} \equiv q_{1}\cdot(q_{2} \times q_{3}) \neq0$.

ASTRO-H White Paper - Stars -- Accretion, Shocks, Charge Exchanges and Magnetic Phenomena

X-ray emission from stars has origins as diverse as the stars themselves: accretion shocks, shocks generated in wind-wind collisions, or release of magnetic energy. Although the scenarios responsible for X-ray emission are thought to be known, the physical mechanisms operating are in many cases not yet fully understood. Full testing of many of these mechanisms requires high energy resolution, large effective area, and coverage of broad energy bands. The loss of the X-ray calorimeter spectrometer on board ASTRO-E2 was a huge blow to the field; it would have provided a large sample of high resolution spectra of stars with high signal-to-noise ratio. Now, with the advent of the ASTRO-H Soft X-ray Spectrometer and Hard X-ray Imager, we will be able to examine some of the hot topics in stellar astrophysics and solve outstanding mysteries.

Very Massive Stars (VMS) in the Local Universe

Recent studies have claimed the existence of very massive stars (VMS) up to 300 solar masses in the local Universe. As this finding may represent a paradigm shift for the canonical stellar upper-mass limit of 150 Msun, it is timely to discuss the status of the data, as well as the far-reaching implications of such objects. We held a Joint Discussion at the General Assembly in Beijing to discuss (i) the determination of the current masses of the most massive stars, (ii) the formation of VMS, (iii) their mass loss, and (iv) their evolution and final fate. The prime aim was to reach broad consensus between observers and theorists on how to identify and quantify the dominant physical processes.

Plasmonic bandgaps and Trapped Plasmons on Nanostructured Metal Surfaces

Nanostructured metal surfaces comprised of periodically arranged spherical voids are grown by electrochemical deposition through a self-assembled template. Detailed measurements of the angle- and orientation-dependent reflectivity reveal the spectral dispersion, from which we identify the presence of both delocalized Bragg- and localized Mie-plasmons. These couple strongly producing bonding and anti-bonding mixed plasmons with anomalous dispersion properties. Appropriate plasmon engineering of the void morphology selects the plasmon spatial and spectral positions, allowing these plasmonic crystal films to be optimised for a wide range of sensing applications.

Multi-Strings on AdS_3 x S^3 from Matrix String Theory

We analyze the Coulomb branch of Matrix string theory in the presence of NS5-branes. If we regard the components of U(1) gauge fields as the dualized longitudinal coordinates, we obtain the symmetric product of AdS_3 x S^3 x R^4 as the geometry of Coulomb branch. We observe that the absence or presence of the nonzero electric flux determines whether the string propagates in bulk as an ordinary closed string or is forced to live near the boundary. We further discuss the issues of the physical spectrum from the viewpoint of Matrix string theory. We show that the twisted sectors of CFT on the symmetric orbifold, which correspond to glued strings, turn out to yield many chiral primaries that were hitherto considered to be missing. We also comment on the threshold energy in Liouville sector where continuous spectrum begins.

Hilbert Space of Space-time SCFT in AdS_3 Supersting and T^{4kp}/S_{kp} SCFT

We explore the superstring theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 in the framework given in hep-th/9806194. We argue on the Hilbert space of "space-time CFT", and especially construct a suitable vacuum of this CFT from the physical degrees of freedom of the superstring theory in bulk. We first construct it explicitly in the case of p=1, and then present a proposal for the general cases of p>1. After giving some completion of the GKS's constructions of the higher mode operators (in particular, of those including spin fields), we also make some comparison between the space-time CFT and T^{4kp}/S_{kp} SCFT, namely, with respect to the physical spectrum of chiral primaries and some algebraic structures of bosonic and fermionic oscillators in both theories. We also observe how our proposal about the Hilbert space of space-time CFT leads to a satisfactory correspondence between the spectrum of chiral primaries of both theories in the cases of p>1.

BPS mass spectrum from D-brane action

We derive the BPS mass formulae of the Dirichlet branes from the Born-Infeld type action. BPS saturation is realized when the brane has the minimal volume while keeping the appropriate winding numbers. We apply the idea to two cases, type IIA superstring compactified on $T^4$ and $K3$. The result is consistent with the string duality, and the expected spectrum for the BPS states is reproduced.
