Beyond Wigner's isobaric multiplet mass equation: Effect of charge-symmetry-breaking interaction and Coulomb polarization

The quadratic form of the isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME), which was originally suggested by Wigner and has been generally regarded as valid, is seriously questioned by recent high-precision nuclear mass measurements. The usual resolution to this problem is to add empirically the cubic and quartic $T_z$-terms to characterize the deviations from the IMME, but finding the origin of these terms remains an unsolved difficulty. Based on a strategy beyond the Wigner's first-order perturbation, we derive explicitly the cubic and quartic $T_z$-terms. These terms are shown to be generated by the effective charge-symmetry breaking and charge-independent breaking interactions in nuclear medium combined with the Coulomb polarization effect. Calculations for the $sd$- and lower $fp$-shells explore a systematical emergence of the cubic $T_z$-term, suggesting a general deviation from the original IMME. Intriguingly, the magnitude of the deviation exhibits an oscillation-like behavior with mass number, modulated by the shell effect.

Zero-energy vortex bound state in the superconducting topological surface state of Fe(Se,Te)

Majorana quasiparticles (MQPs) in condensed matter play an important role in strategies for topological quantum computing but still remain elusive. Vortex cores of topological superconductors may accommodate MQPs that appear as the zero-energy vortex bound state (ZVBS). An iron-based superconductor Fe(Se,Te) possesses a superconducting topological surface state that has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopies to detect the ZVBS. However, the results are still controversial. Here, we performed spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy with unprecedentedly high energy resolution to clarify the nature of the vortex bound states in Fe(Se,Te). We found the ZVBS at 0 $\pm$ 20 $μ$eV suggesting its MQP origin, and revealed that some vortices host the ZVBS while others do not. The fraction of vortices hosting the ZVBS decreases with increasing magnetic field, while chemical and electronic quenched disorders are apparently unrelated to the ZVBS. These observations elucidate the conditions to achieve the ZVBS, and may lead to controlling MQPs.

Application of isochronous mass spectrometry for the study of angular momentum population in projectile fragmentation reactions

Isochronous mass spectrometry was applied to measure isomeric yield ratios of fragmentation reaction products. This approach is complementary to conventional gamma-ray spectroscopy in particular for measuring yield ratios for long-lived isomeric states. Isomeric yield ratios for the high-spin I = 19/2 states in the mirror nuclei 53Fe and 53Co are measured to study angular momentum population following the projectile fragmentation of 78Kr at energies of 480A MeV on a beryllium target. The 19/2 state isomeric ratios of 53Fe produced from different projectiles in the literature have also been extracted as a function of mass number difference between projectile and fragment (mass loss). The results are compared to ABRABLA07 model calculations. The isomeric ratios of 53Fe produced using different projectiles suggest that the theory underestimates not only the previously reported dependence on the spin but also the dependence on the mass loss.

Isochronous mass measurements of $T_z=-1$ $fp$-shell nuclei from projectile fragmentation of $^{58}$Ni

Atomic masses of seven $T_z=-1$, $fp$-shell nuclei from $^{44}$V to $^{56}$Cu and two low-lying isomers, $^{44m}$V ($J^π=6^+$) and $^{52m}$Co ($J^π=2^+$), have been measured with relative precisions of $1-4\times 10^{-7}$ with Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) at CSRe. The masses of $^{56}$Cu, $^{52g,52m}$Co, and $^{44m}$V were measured for the first time in this experiment. The Mass Excesses ($ME^{\prime}$s) of $^{44}$V, $^{48}$Mn, $^{50}$Fe, and $^{54}$Ni are determined with an order of magnitude improved precision compared to the literature values. $^{52g,52m}$Co and $^{56}$Cu are found to be $370$~keV and $400$~keV more bound, respectively, while $^{44g,44m}$V are $\sim 300$~keV less bound than the extrapolations in the Atomic-Mass Evaluation 2012 (AME$^{\prime}$12). The masses of the four $T_z=-1/2$ nuclei $^{45}$V, $^{47}$Cr, $^{49}$Mn, and $^{51}$Fe are re-determined to be in agreement, within the experimental errors, with the recent JYFLTRAP measurements or with the previous IMS measurements in CSRe. Details of the measurements and data analysis are described, and the impact of the new $ME$ values on different aspects in nuclear structure are investigated and discussed.

Virtual Reality as a Teaching Tool for Moon Phases and Beyond

A ball on a stick is a common and simple activity for teaching the phases of the Moon. This activity, like many others in physics and astronomy, gives students a perspective they otherwise could only imagine. For Moon phases, a third person view and control over time allows students to rapidly build a mental model that connects all the moving parts. Computer simulations of many traditional physics and astronomy activities provide new features, controls, or vantage points to enhance learning beyond a hands-on activity. Virtual reality provides the capabilities of computer simulations and embodied cognition experiences through a hands-on activity making it a natural step to improve learning. We recreated the traditional ball-and-stick moon phases activity in virtual reality and compared participant learning using this simulation with using traditional methods. We found a strong participant preference for VR relative to the traditional methods. However, we observed no difference across conditions in average levels of performance on a pre/post knowledge test.

Yields and production rates of cosmogenic $^9$Li and $^8$He measured with the Double Chooz near and far detectors

The yields and production rates of the radioisotopes $^9$Li and $^8$He created by cosmic muon spallation on $^{12}$C, have been measured by the two detectors of the Double Chooz experiment. The identical detectors are located at separate sites and depths, which means they are subject to different muon spectra. The near (far) detector has an overburden of $\sim$120 m.w.e. ($\sim$300 m.w.e.) corresponding to a mean muon energy of $32.1\pm2.0\,\mathrm{GeV}$ ($63.7\pm5.5\,\mathrm{GeV}$). Comparing the data to a detailed simulation of the $^9$Li and $^8$He decays, the contribution of the $^8$He radioisotope at both detectors is found to be compatible with zero. The observed $^9$Li yields in the near and far detectors are $5.51\pm0.51$ and $7.90\pm0.51$, respectively, in units of $10^{-8}μ^{-1} \mathrm{g^{-1} cm^{2} }$. The shallow overburdens of the near and far detectors give a unique insight when combined with measurements by KamLAND and Borexino to give the first multi--experiment, data driven relationship between the $^9$Li yield and the mean muon energy according to the power law $Y = Y_0( / 1\,\mathrm{GeV})^{\overlineα}$, giving $\overlineα=0.72\pm0.06$ and $Y_0=(0.43\pm0.11)\times 10^{-8}μ^{-1} \mathrm{g^{-1} cm^{2}}$. This relationship gives future liquid scintillator based experiments the ability to predict their cosmogenic $^9$Li background rates.

Giant Intrinsic Spin Hall Effect in W$_3$Ta and other A15 Superconductors

The spin Hall effect (SHE) is the conversion of charge current to spin current, and non-magnetic metals with large SHEs are extremely sought after for spintronic applications, but their rarity has stifled widespread use. Here we predict and explain the large intrinsic SHE in $β$-W and the A15 family of superconductors: W$_3$Ta, Ta$_3$Sb, and Cr$_3$Ir having spin hall conductivities (SHC) of -2250, -1400, and 1210 $\frac{\hbar}{e}(Ωcm)^{-1}$, respectively. Combining concepts from topological physics with the dependence of the SHE on the spin Berry curvature (SBC) of the electronic bands, we propose a simple strategy to rapidly search for materials with large intrinsic SHEs based on the following ideas: high symmetry combined with heavy atoms gives rise to multiple Dirac-like crossings in the electronic structure, without sufficient symmetry protection these crossings gap due to spin orbit coupling (SOC), and gapped Dirac crossings create large spin Berry curvature.

General Resolution Enhancement Method in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) Using Deep Learning

This paper develops a resolution enhancement method for post-processing the images from Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). This method is based on deep learning neural networks in the AFM topography measurements. In this study, a very deep convolution neural network is developed to derive the high-resolution topography image from the low-resolution topography image. The AFM measured images from various materials are tested in this study. The derived high-resolution AFM images are comparable with the experimental measured high-resolution images measured at the same locations. The results suggest that this method can be developed as a general post-processing method for AFM image analysis.

The Masses of the $T_z=-3/2$ Nuclei $^{27}$P and $^{29}$S

Isochronous mass spectrometry has been applied in the storage ring CSRe to measure the masses of the $T_z=-3/2$ nuclei $^{27}$P and $^{29}$S. The new mass excess value $ME$($^{29}$S) $=-3094(13)$~keV is 66(52)~keV larger than the result of the previous $^{32}$S($^3$He,$^{6}$He)$^{29}$S reaction measurement in 1973 and a factor of 3.8 more precise. The new result for $^{29}$S, together with those of the $T=3/2$ isobaric analog states (IAS) in $^{29}$P, $^{29}$Si, and $^{29}$Al, fit well into the quadratic form of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation IMME. The mass excess of $^{27}$P has been remeasured to be $ME(^{27}$P$)=-685(42)$ keV. By analyzing the linear and quadratic coefficients of the IMME in the $T_z=-3/2$ $sd$-shell nuclei, it was found that the ratio of the Coulomb radius parameters is $R\approx0.96$ and is nearly the same for all $T=3/2$ isospin multiplets. Such a nearly constant $R$-value, apparently valid for the entire light mass region with $A>9$, can be used to set stringent constraints on the isovector and isotensor components of the isospin non-conserving forces in theoretical calculations.

Photon detector system timing performance in the DUNE 35-ton prototype liquid argon time projection chamber

The 35-ton prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment far detector was a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber with an integrated photon detector system, all situated inside a membrane cryostat. The detector took cosmic-ray data for six weeks during the period of February 1, 2016 to March 12, 2016. The performance of the photon detection system was checked with these data. An installed photon detector was demonstrated to measure the arrival times of cosmic-ray muons with a resolution better than 32 ns, limited by the timing of the trigger system. A measurement of the timing resolution using closely-spaced calibration pulses yielded a resolution of 15 ns for pulses at a level of 6 photo-electrons. Scintillation light from cosmic-ray muons was observed to be attenuated with increasing distance with a characteristic length of $155 \pm 28$ cm.

Observation of Landau quantization and standing waves in HfSiS

Recently, HfSiS was found to be a new type of Dirac semimetal with a line of Dirac nodes in the band structure. Meanwhile, Rashba-split surface states are also pronounced in this compound. Here we report a systematic study of HfSiS by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy at low temperature and high magnetic field. The Rashba-split surface states are characterized by measuring Landau quantization and standing waves, which reveal a quasi-linear dispersive band structure. First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory are conducted and compared with the experimental results. Based on these investigations, the properties of the Rashba-split surface states and their interplay with defects and collective modes are discussed.

Isoscalar neutron-proton pairing and SU(4)-symmetry breaking in Gamow-Teller transitions

The isoscalar neutron-proton pairing is thought to be important for nuclei with equal number of protons and neutrons but its manifestation in structure properties remains to be understood. We investigate the Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions for the f7/2-shell nuclei in large-scale shell-model calculations with the realistic Hamiltonian. We show that the isoscalar T=0, J=1+ neutron-proton pairing interaction plays a decisive role for the concentration of GT strengths at the first-excited 1+ state in 42Sc, and that the suppression of these strengths in 46V, 50Mn, and 54Co is mainly caused by the spin-orbit force supplemented by the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. Based on the good reproduction of the charge-exchange reaction data, we further analyze the interplay between the isoscalar and isovector pairing correlations. We conclude that even for the most promising A=42 nuclei where the SU(4) isoscalar-isovector-pairing symmetry is less broken, the probability of forming an isoscalar neutron-proton pairing condensation is less than 60% as compared to the expectation at the SU(4)-symmetry limit.

Electrical and Thermal Transport at the Planckian Bound of Dissipation in the Hydrodynamic Electron Fluid of WP2

Materials with strongly-correlated electrons exhibit interesting phenomena such as metal-insulator transitions and high-temperature superconductivity. In stark contrast to ordinary metals, electron transport in these materials is thought to resemble the flow of viscous fluids. Despite their differences, it is predicted that transport in both, conventional and correlated materials, is fundamentally limited by the uncertainty principle applied to energy dissipation. Here we discover hydrodynamic electron flow in the Weyl-semimetal tungsten phosphide (WP2). Using thermal and magneto-electric transport experiments, we observe the transition from a conventional metallic state, at higher temperatures, to a hydrodynamic electron fluid below 20 K. The hydrodynamic regime is characterized by a viscosity-induced dependence of the electrical resistivity on the square of the channel width, and by the observation of a strong violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law. From magneto-hydrodynamic experiments and complementary Hall measurements, the relaxation times for momentum and thermal energy dissipating processes are extracted. Following the uncertainty principle, both are limited by the Planckian bound of dissipation, independent of the underlying transport regime.

Mass Measurements of Neutron-Deficient Y, Zr, and Nb Isotopes and Their Impact on $rp$ and $νp$ Nucleosynthesis Processes

Using isochronous mass spectrometry at the experimental storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou, the masses of $^{82}$Zr and $^{84}$Nb were measured for the first time with an uncertainty of $\sim 10$ keV, and the masses of $^{79}$Y, $^{81}$Zr, and $^{83}$Nb were re-determined with a higher precision. %The latter differ significantly from their literature values. The latter are significantly less bound than their literature values. Our new and accurate masses remove the irregularities of the mass surface in this region of the nuclear chart. Our results do not support the predicted island of pronounced low $α$ separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc isotopes, making the formation of Zr-Nb cycle in the $rp$-process unlikely. The new proton separation energy of $^{83}$Nb was determined to be 490(400)~keV smaller than that in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012. This partly removes the overproduction of the $p$-nucleus $^{84}$Sr relative to the neutron-deficient molybdenum isotopes in the previous $νp$-process simulations.

Performance comparison of 2-1-3, 1-3 and 1-3-2 piezoelectric composite transducers by finite element method

1-3 type, 1-3-2 type and 2-1-3 type piezoelectric composites are three proper smart materials for the design and manufacture of ultrasonic transducers. They have been proposed in different stages but possess similar properties. Compared with the initial 1-3 type composite, 1-3-2 composite is of higher mechanical stability. Compared with 1-3-2 composite, 2-1-3 composite has lower manufacturing difficulty. In this paper, a comparative study on these three composites in terms of receiving transducer material properties is presented. Finite element method (FEM) has been adopted to calculate longitudinal velocity, thickness electromechanical coupling coefficient and voltage receiving sensitivity. It is concluded that for a large aspect ratio $α=1$, the performance of 2-1-3 composite transducer is much better than that of 1-3 and 1-3-2 composite transducers. The thickness electromechanical coupling coefficient of 2-1-3 composite transducer is about 5.58 times that of 1-3 composite transducer and 7.42 times that of 1-3-2 composite transducer. The voltage receiving sensitivity at 2 kHz of 2-1-3 composite transducer is 13.1 dB higher than that of 1-3-2 composite transducer and 12.3 dB higher than that of 1-3 composite transducer.

Optical properties of dense lithium in electride phases by first-principles calculations

The metal-semiconductor-metal transition in dense lithium is considered as an archetype of interplay between interstitial electron localization and delocalization induced by compression, which leads to exotic electride phases. In this work, the dynamic dielectric response and optical properties of the high-pressure electride phases of cI16, oC40 and oC24 in lithium spanning a wide pressure range from 40 to 200 GPa by first-principles calculations are reported. Both interband and intraband contribution to the dielectric function are deliberately treated with the linear response theory. One intraband and two interband plasmons in cI16 at 70 GPa induced by a structural distortion at 2.1, 4.1, and 7.7 eV are discovered, which make the reflectivity of this weak metallic phase abnormally lower than the insulating phase oC40 at the corresponding frequencies. More strikingly, oC24 as a reentrant metallic phase with higher conductivity becomes more transparent than oC40 in infrared and visible light range due to its unique electronic structure around Fermi surface. An intriguing reflectivity anisotropy in both oC40 and oC24 is predicted, with the former being strong enough for experimental detection within the spectrum up to 10 eV. The important role of interstitial localized electrons is highlighted, revealing diversity and rich physics in electrides.

Generalized isobaric multiplet mass equation and its application to the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly

The Wigner Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation (IMME) is the most fundamental prediction in nuclear physics with the concept of isospin. However, it was deduced based on the Wigner-Eckart theorem with the assumption that all charge-violating interactions can be written as tensors of rank two. In the present work, the charge-symmetry breaking (CSB) and charge-independent breaking (CIB) components of the nucleon-nucleon force, which contribute to the effective interaction in nuclear medium, are established in the framework of Brueckner theory with AV18 and AV14 bare interactions. Because such charge-violating components can no longer be expressed as an irreducible tensor due to density dependence, its matrix element cannot be analytically reduced by the Wigner-Eckart theorem. With an alternative approach, we derive a generalized IMME (GIMME) that modifies the coefficients of the original IMME. As the first application of GIMME, we study the long-standing question for the origin of the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly found in the Coulomb displacement energy of mirror nuclei. We find that the naturally-emerged CSB term in GIMME is largely responsible for explaining the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly.

Critical behavior of two-dimensional intrinsically ferromagnetic semiconductor CrI3

CrI3, which belongs to a rare category of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic semiconductors, is of great interest for spintronic device applications. Unlike CrCl3 whose magnetism presents a 2D-Heisenberg behavior, CrI3 exhibits a larger van der Waals gap, smaller cleavage energy, and stronger magnetic anisotropy which could lead to a 3D magnetic characteristic. Hence, we investigate the critical behavior of CrI3 in the vicinity of magnetic transition. We use the modified Arrott plot and Kouvel-Fisher method, and conduct critical isotherm analysis to estimate the critical exponents near the ferromagnetic phase transition. This shows that the magnetism of CrI3 follows the crossover behavior of a 3D-Ising model with mean field type interactions where the critical exponents \b{eta}, γ, and δ are 0.323, 0.835, and 3.585, respectively, at the Curie temperature of 64 K. We propose the crossover behavior can be attributed to the strong uniaxial anisotropy and inevitable interlayer coupling. Our experiment demonstrates the applicability of crossover behavior to a 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor.
