Local versus nonlocal $αα$ interactions in $3α$ description of $^{12}$C

Local $αα$ potentials fail to describe $^{12}$C as a $3α$ system. Nonlocal $αα$ potentials that renormalize the energy-dependent kernel of the resonating group method allow interpreting simultaneously the ground state and $0^+_2$ resonance of $^{12}$C as $3α$ states. A comparison with fully microscopic calculations provides a measure of the importance of three-cluster exchanges in those states.

Systematic analysis of reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes

We systematically analyze total reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes with N=6--16 on a $^{12}$C target for wide range of incident energy. The intrinsic structure of the carbon isotope is described by a Slater determinant generated from a phenomenological mean-field potential, which reasonably well reproduces the ground state properties for most of the even $N$ isotopes. We need separate studies not only for odd nuclei but also for $^{16}$C and $^{22}$C. The density of the carbon isotope is constructed by eliminating the effect of the center of mass motion. For the calculations of the cross sections, we take two schemes: one is the Glauber approximation, and the other is the eikonal model using a global optical potential. We find that both of the schemes successfully reproduce low and high incident energy data on the cross sections of $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C and $^{16}$C on $^{12}$C. The calculated reaction cross sections of $^{15}$C are found to be considerably smaller than the empirical values observed at low energy. We find a consistent parameterization of the nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude, differently from previous ones. Finally, we predict the total reaction cross section of $^{22}$C on $^{12}$C.

Lambda alpha, Sigma alpha and Xi alpha potentials derived from the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction

We calculate Lambda alpha, Sigma alpha and Xi alpha potentials from the nuclear-matter G-matrices of the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction. The alpha-cluster wave function is assumed to be a simple harmonic-oscillator shell-model wave function. A new method is proposed to derive the direct and knock-on terms of the interaction Born kernel from the hyperon-nucleon G-matrices, with explicit treatments of the nonlocality and the center-of-mass motion between the hyperon and alpha. We find that the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interactions, FSS and fss2, yield a reasonable bound-state energy for 5 He Lambda, -3.18 -- -3.62 MeV, in spite of the fact that they give relatively large depths for the Lambda single-particle potentials, 46 -- 48 MeV, in symmetric nuclear matter. An equivalent local potential derived from the Wigner transform of the nonlocal Lambda alpha kernel shows a strong energy dependence for the incident Lambda-particle, indicating the importance of the strangeness-exchange process in the original hyperon-nucleon interaction. The Sigma alpha and Xi alpha potentials are repulsive with the attractive isospin I=1/2 (Sigma alpha) and I=0 (Xi alpha) components and the repulsive I=3/2 (Sigma alpha) and I=1 (Xi alpha) components.

Microscopic Calculation of Spin Torques and Forces

Spin torques, that is, effects of conduction electrons on magnetization dynamics, are calculated microscopically in the first order in spatial gradient and time derivative of magnetization. Special attention is paid to the so-called β-term and the Gilbert damping, α, in the presence of electrons' spin-relaxation processes, which are modeled by quenched magnetic impurities. Two types of forces that the electric/spin current exerts on magnetization are identified based on a general formula relating the force to the torque.

$^{22}$C: $S$-Wave Two-Neutron Halo

A dripline nucleus $^{22}$C is studied in a Borromean three-body model of $^{20}$C+$n$+$n$. The valence neutrons, interacting via a realistic potential, are constrained to be orthogonal to the occupied orbits in $^{20}$C. We obtain ample results supporting that $^{22}$C is an ideal $S$-wave two-neutron halo nucleus: The ground state is bound by 390-570 keV, the root mean square neutron and proton radii are 4.0 and 2.4 fm, and the two neutrons are predominantly in $(s_{1/2})^2$ orbits. The binding mechanism of $^{22}$C is discussed. One- and two-body density distributions elucidate the halo character as well as the correlated motion of the neutrons. The reaction cross sections of $^{22}$C+$^{12}$C collisions are predicted.

Baryon-baryon interactions in the SU6 quark model and their applications to light nuclear systems

Interactions between the octet-baryons (B8) in the spin-flavor SU6 quark model are investigated in a unified coupled-channels framework of the resonating-group method (RGM). The interaction Hamiltonian for quarks consists of the phenomenological confinement potential, the color Fermi-Breit interaction with explicit flavor-symmetry breaking (FSB), and effective-meson exchange potentials of scalar-, pseudoscalar- and vector-meson types. The model parameters are determined to reproduce the properties of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) system and the low-energy cross section data for the hyperon-nucleon (YN) interactions. The NN phase shifts and many observables for the NN and YN interactions are nicely reproduced. Properties of these B8 B8 interactions are analyzed through the G-matrix calculations. The B8 B8 interactions are then applied to some of few-baryon systems and light Lambda-hypernuclei in a three-cluster Faddeev formalism using two-cluster RGM kernels. An application to the three-nucleon system shows that the quark-model NN interaction can give a sufficient triton binding energy with little room for the three-nucleon force. The hypertriton Faddeev calculation indicates that the attraction of the Lambda N interaction in the 1S0 state is only slightly more attractive than that in the 3S1 state. In the application to the alpha alpha Lambda system, the energy spectrum of 9 Lambda Be is well reproduced using the alpha alpha RGM kernel. The very small spin-orbit splitting of the 9 Lambda Be excited states is also discussed. In the Lambda Lambda alpha Faddeev calculation, the NAGARA event for 6 Lambda Lambda He is found to be consistent with the quark-model Lambda Lambda interaction.

X-ray scattering from surfaces: discrete and continuous components of roughness

Incoherent surface scattering yields a statistical description of the surface, due to the ensemble averaging over many independently sampled volumes. Depending on the state of the surface and direction of the scattering vector relative to the surface normal, the height distribution is discrete, continuous, or a combination of the two. We present a treatment for the influence of multimodal surface height distributions on Crystal Truncation Rod scattering. The effects of a multimodal height distribution are especially evident during in situ monitoring of layer-by-layer thin-film growth via Pulsed Laser Deposition. We model the total height distribution as a convolution of discrete and continuous components, resulting in a broadly applicable parameterization of surface roughness which can be applied to other scattering probes, such as electrons and neutrons. Convolution of such distributions could potentially be applied to interface or chemical scattering. Here we find that this analysis describes accurately our experimental studies of <001> SrTiO3 annealing and homoepitaxial growth.

Removal of forbidden states in a three-$α$ system

The ground and excited 0$^+$ states of $^{12}$C are investigated in a 3$α$ macroscopic model using the deep potential of Buck, Friedrich and Wheatley. The elimination of forbidden states is performed either by constructing the allowed state space explicitly or by using the orthogonalizing pseudopotential. The well-known enigmatic behavior of the latter approach is resolved. It is safe to define the forbidden states referring to the underlying microscopic model.

Structure of and E2 transition in $^{16}$C in a $^{14}$C+n+n model

A three-body model of $^{14}$C+n+n is applied to study the energy spectrum and the hindered $E$2 transition in $^{16}$C. A realistic two-nucleon potential is used for the valence neutrons. Both spin singlet and triplet components for the neutrons are taken into account. The three-body problem with a Pauli constraint is solved in a stochastic variational method. For the n-$^{14}$C potential chosen to reproduce the properties of $^{15}$C, the low-lying energy spectrum agrees reasonably well with experiment, but the ground state is predicted to be about 1 MeV high. The calculated $B(E2$; $2_1^+ \to 0^+_1)$ value is about twice the measured value if the polarization charge of the valence neutrons is taken to be the same as that required to fit the $^{15}$C data. The correlated motion of the valence neutrons is displayed through the two-neutron density distribution.

Structure and decay width of Θ^+ in a one-gluon exchange model

The mass and decay width of the $Θ^+(1540)$ with isospin 0 are investigated in a constituent quark model comprising $uudd\bar{s}$ quarks. The resonance state for the $Θ^+$ is identified as a stable solution in correlated basis calculations. With the use of a one-gluon exchange quark-quark interaction, the mass is calculated to be larger than 2 GeV, increasing in order of the spin-parity, ${1/2}^-, {3/2}^-$ and ${1/2}^+ ({3/2}^+)$, and only the ${3/2}^-$ state has a small width to the $nK^{*+}$ decay. If the calculated mass is shifted to around 100 MeV above the $N+K$ threshold, the $Θ^+(1540)$ is possibly ${1/2}^+ ({3/2}^+)$ or ${3/2}^-$, though in the latter case it cannot decay to the $nK^{+}$ channel. In addition it is conjectured that other pentaquark state with different spin-parity exists below the $Θ^+(1540)$. The structure of the $Θ^+$ is discussed through the densities and two-particle correlation functions of the quarks and through the wave function decomposition to a baryon-meson model and a diquark-pair model.

Non-equilibrium Magnetization Dynamics in the Fe_8 Single-Molecule Magnet Induced by High-Intensity Microwave Radiation

Resonant microwave radiation applied to a single crystal of the molecular magnet Fe_8 induces dramatic changes in the sample's magnetization. Transitions between excited states are found even though at the nominal system temperature these levels have negligible population. We find evidence that the sample heats significantly when the resonance condition is met. In addition, heating is observed after a short pulse of intense radiation has been turned off, indicating that the spin system is out of equilibrium with the lattice.

Multiple Time Scales in Diffraction Measurements of Diffusive Surface Relaxation

We grew SrTiO3 on SrTiO3 (001) by pulsed laser deposition, using x-ray scattering to monitor the growth in real time. The time-resolved small angle scattering exhibits a well-defined length scale associated with the spacing between unit cell high surface features. This length scale imposes a discrete spectrum of Fourier components and rate constants upon the diffusion equation solution, evident in multiple exponential relaxation of the "anti-Bragg" diffracted intensity. An Arrhenius analysis of measured rate constants confirms that they originate from a single activation energy.

Observed Effects of a Changing Step-Edge Density on Thin-Film Growth Dynamics

We grew SrTiO3 on SrTiO3 [001] by pulsed laser deposition, while observing x-ray diffraction at the (0 0 .5) position. The drop dI in the x-ray intensity following a laser pulse contains information about plume-surface interactions. Kinematic theory predicts dI/I = -4sigma(1-sigma), so that dI/I depends only on the amount of deposited material sigma. In contrast, we observed experimentally that |dI/I| < 4sigma(1-sigma), and that dI/I depends on the phase of x-ray growth oscillations. The combined results suggest a fast smoothing mechanism that depends on surface step-edge density.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

Faddeev Calculation of the Hypertriton using the SU_6 Quark-Model Nucleon-Nucleon and Hyperon-Nucleon Interactions

Quark-model nucleon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon interactions by the Kyoto- Niigata group are applied to the hypertriton calculation in a new three-cluster Faddeev formalism using the two-cluster resonating-group method kernels. The most recent model, fss2, gives a reasonable result similar to the Nijmegen soft-core model NSC89, except for an appreciable contributions of higher partial waves.

Faddeev calculation of 3 alpha and alpha alpha Lambda systems using alpha alpha resonating-group method kernel

We carry out Faddeev calculations of three-alpha (3 alpha) and two-alpha plus Lambda (alpha alpha Lambda) systems, using two-cluster resonating-group method kernels. The input includes an effective two-nucleon force for the alpha alpha resonating-group method and a new effective Lambda N force for the Lambda alpha interaction. The latter force is a simple two-range Gaussian potential for each spin-singlet and triplet state, generated from the phase-shift behavior of the quark-model hyperon-nucleon interaction, fss2, by using an inversion method based on supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Owing to the exact treatment of the Pauli-forbidden states between the clusters, the present three-cluster Faddeev formalism can describe the mutually related, alpha alpha, 3 alpha and alpha alpha Lambda systems, in terms of a unique set of the baryon-baryon interactions. For the three-range Minnesota force which describes the alpha alpha phase shifts quite accurately, the ground-state and excitation energies of 9Be Lambda are reproduced within 100 - 200 keV accuracy.

Spin-orbit splitting of 9 Lambda Be excited states studied with the SU_6 quark-model baryon-baryon interactions

The previous Faddeev calculation of the two-alpha plus Lambda system for 9 Lambda Be is extended to incorporate the spin-orbit components of the SU_6 quark-model baryon-baryon interactions. We employ the Born kernel of the quark-model Lambda N LS interaction, and generate the spin-orbit component of the Lambda alpha potential by the alpha-cluster folding. The Faddeev calculation in the jj-coupling scheme implies that the direct use of the quark-model Born kernel for the Lambda N LS component is not good enough to reproduce the small experimental value Delta E^exp_{ls}=43 +- 5 keV for the 5/2^+ - 3/2^+ splitting. This procedure predicts three to five times larger values in the model FSS and fss2. The spin-orbit contribution from the effective meson-exchange potentials in fss2 is argued to be unfavorable to the small ls splitting, through the analysis of the Scheerbaum factors for the single-particle spin-orbit potentials calculated in the G-matrix formalism.

Faddeev calculation of 6 He Lambda Lambda using SU_6 quark-model baryon-baryon interactions

Quark-model hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions by the Kyoto-Niigata group are applied to the two-Lambda plus alpha system in a new three-cluster Faddeev formalism using two-cluster resonating-group method kernels. The model fss2 gives a reasonable two-Lambda separation energy Delta B_{Lambda Lambda}=1.41 MeV, which is consistent with the recent empirical value, Delta B^{exp}_{Lambda Lambda}=1.01 +/- 0.20 MeV, deduced from the Nagara event. Some important effects that are not taken into account in the present calculation are discussed.
