Element-specific soft X-ray spectroscopy, scattering and imaging studies of skyrmion-hosting compound Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$

A room-temperature skyrmion-hosting compound Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ has been examined by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant small-angle scattering and extended reference holography. An element-selective study was performed by exciting the $2p$-to-$3d$ transitions near Co and Mn $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. By utilizing the coherence of soft X-ray beams the element-specific real-space distribution of local magnetization at different temperatures has been reconstructed using iterative phase retrieval and holography with extended reference. It was shown that the magnetic moments of Co and Mn are ferromagnetically coupled and exhibit similar magnetic patterns. Both imaging methods provide a real-space resolution of 30 nm and allowed to record a magnetic texture in the temperature range between $T\,=\,20$ K and $T\,=120\,$ K, demonstrating the elongation of the skyrmions along the principal crystallographic axes at low temperatures. Micromagnetic simulations have shown that such deformation is driven by decreasing ratio of symmetric exchange interaction to antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the system and effect of the cubic anisotropy.

Evolution of electronic states and emergence of superconductivity in the polar semiconductor GeTe by doping valence-skipping In

GeTe is a chemically simple IV-VI semiconductor which bears a rich plethora of different physical properties induced by doping and external stimuli. These include, among others, ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, phase-change memory functionality, and comparably large thermoelectric figure of merits. Here we report a superconductor - semiconductor - superconductor transition controlled by finely-tuned In doping. Our results moreover show the existence of a critical doping concentration around $x = 0.12$ in Ge$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te, where various properties take either an extremum or change their characters: The structure changes from polarly-rhombohedral to cubic, the resistivity sharply increases by orders of magnitude, the type of charge carriers changes from holes to electrons, and the density of states diminishes at the dawn of an emerging superconducting phase. By core-level photoemission spectroscopy we find indications of a change in the In-valence state from In$^{3+}$ to In$^{1+}$ with increasing $x$, suggesting that this system is a new promising playground to probe valence fluctuations and their possible impact on superconductivity.

Controlling the helicity of magnetic skyrmions in a $β$-Mn-type high-temperature chiral magnet

Magnetic helices and skyrmions in noncentrosymmetric magnets are representative examples of chiral spin textures in solids. Their spin swirling direction, often termed as the magnetic helicity and defined as either left-handed or right-handed, is uniquely determined by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in fixed chirality host crystals. Thus far, there have been relatively few investigations of the DMI in metallic magnets as compared with insulating counterparts. Here, we focus on the metallic magnets Co$_{8-x}$Fe$_x$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 4.5) with a $β$-Mn-type chiral structure and find that as $x$ varies under a fixed crystal chirality, a reversal of magnetic helicity occurs at $x_\mathrm{c}$ $\sim$ 2.7. This experimental result is supported by a theory based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, demonstrating the DMI to depend critically on the electron band filling. Thus by composition tuning our work shows the sign change of the DMI with respect to a fixed crystal chirality to be a universal feature of metallic chiral magnets.

Disordered skyrmion phase stabilized by magnetic frustration in a chiral magnet

Magnetic skyrmions are vortex-like topological spin textures often observed to form a triangular-lattice skyrmion crystal in structurally chiral magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Recently $β$-Mn structure-type Co-Zn-Mn alloys were identified as a new class of chiral magnet to host such skyrmion crystal phases, while $β$-Mn itself is known as hosting an elemental geometrically frustrated spin liquid. Here we report the intermediate composition system Co$_7$Zn$_7$Mn$_6$ to be a unique host of two disconnected, thermal-equilibrium topological skyrmion phases; one is a conventional skyrmion crystal phase stabilized by thermal fluctuations and restricted to exist just below the magnetic transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$, and the other is a novel three-dimensionally disordered skyrmion phase that is stable well below $T_\mathrm{c}$. The stability of this new disordered skyrmion phase is due to a cooperative interplay between the chiral magnetism with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the frustrated magnetism inherent to $β$-Mn.

Directional dichroism in the paramagnetic state of multiferroics: a case study of infrared light absorption in Sr2CoSi2O7 at high temperatures

The coexisting magnetic and ferroelectric orders in multiferroic materials give rise to a handful of novel magnetoelectric phenomena, such as the absorption difference for the opposite propagation directions of light called the non-reciprocal directional dichroism (NDD). Usually these effects are restricted to low temperature, where the multiferroic phase develops. In this paper we report the observation of NDD in the paramagnetic phase of Sr2CoSi2O7 up to temperatures more than ten times higher than its Néel temperature (7 K) and in fields up to 30 T. The magnetically induced polarization and NDD in the disordered paramagnetic phase is readily explained by the single-ion spin-dependent hybridization mechanism, which does not necessitate correlation effects between magnetic ions. The Sr2CoSi2O7 provides an ideal system for a theoretical case study, demonstrating the concept of magnetoelectric spin excitations in a paramagnet via analytical as well as numerical approaches. We applied exact diagonalization of a spin cluster to map out the temperature and field dependence of the spin excitations, as well as symmetry arguments of the single ion and lattice problem to get the spectrum and selection rules.

Deformation of the Magnetic Skyrmion Lattice in MnSi under Electric Current Flow

Using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we investigate the deformation of the magnetic skyrmion lattice in bulk single-crystalline MnSi under electric current flow. A significant broadening of the skyrmion-lattice-reflection peaks was observed in the SANS pattern for current densities greater than a threshold value j_t ~ 1 MA/m^2 (10^6 A/m^2). We show this peak broadening to originate from a spatially inhomogeneous rotation of the skyrmion lattice, with an inverse rotation sense observed for opposite sample edges aligned with the direction of current flow. The peak broadening (and the corresponding skyrmion lattice rotations) remain finite even after switching off the electric current. These results indicate that skyrmion lattices under current flow experience significant friction near the sample edges, and plastic deformation due to pinning effects, these being important factors that must be considered for the anticipated skyrmion-based applications in chiral magnets at the nanoscale.

Magnetic properties in the metallic magnets with large anisotropy

We study low temperature properties in the metallic magnets, considering the itinerant electron mediated ferromagnetism. Applying the Monte Carlo simulations to the extended double exchange model, we discuss reorientation phase transition and anisotropy field for the metallic magnets.

Emergent topological spin structures in a centrosymmetric cubic perovskite

The skyrmion crystal (SkX) characterized by a multiple-q helical spin modulation has been reported as a unique topological state that competes with the single-q helimagnetic order in non-centrosymmetric materials. Here we report the discovery of a rich variety of multiple-q helimagnetic spin structures in the centrosymmetric cubic perovskite SrFeO3. On the basis of neutron diffraction measurements, we have identified two types of robust multiple-q topological spin structures that appear in the absence of external magnetic fields: an anisotropic double-q spin spiral and an isotropic quadruple-q spiral hosting a three-dimensional lattice of hedgehog singularities. The present system not only diversifies the family of SkX host materials, but furthermore provides an experimental missing link between centrosymmetric lattices and topological helimagnetic order. It also offers perspectives for integration of SkXs into oxide electronic devices.

Negative magnetoresistance suppressed through topological phase transition in (Cd1-xZnx)3As2 films

The newly discovered topological Dirac semimetals host the possibilities of various topological phase transitions through the control of spin-orbit coupling as well as symmetries and dimensionalities. Here, we report a magnetotransport study of high-mobility (Cd1-xZnx)3As2 films, where the topological Dirac semimetal phase can be turned into a trivial insulator via chemical substitution. By high-field measurements with a Hall-bar geometry, magnetoresistance components ascribed to the chiral charge pumping have been distinguished from other extrinsic effects. The negative magnetoresistance exhibits a clear suppression upon Zn doping, reflecting decreasing Berry curvature of the band structure as the topological phase transition is induced by reducing the spin-orbit coupling.

Tailoring band-structure and band-filling in a simple cubic (IV, III) - VI superconductor

Superconductivity and its underlying mechanisms are one of the most active research fields in condensed-matter physics. An important question is how to enhance the transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of a superconductor. In this respect, the possibly positive role of valence-skipping elements in the pairing mechanism has been attracting considerable interest. Here we follow this pathway and successfully enhance $T_{\rm c}$ up to almost 6 K in the simple chalcogenide SnTe known as topological crystalline insulator by doping the valence-skipping element In and codoping Se. A high-pressure synthesis method enabled us to form single-phase solid solutions Sn$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te$_{1-y}$Se$_{y}$ over a wide composition range while keeping the cubic structure necessary for the superconductivity. Our experimental results are supported by density-functional theory calculations which suggest that even higher $T_{\rm c}$ values would be possible if the required doping range were experimentally accessible.

Current-induced viscoelastic topological unwinding of metastable skyrmion strings

In the MnSi bulk chiral magnet, magnetic skyrmion strings of 17 nm in diameter appear in the form of a lattice, penetrating the sample thickness, 10-1,000 um. Although such a bundle of skyrmion strings may exhibit complex soft-matter-like dynamics when starting to move under the influence of a random pinning potential, the details remain highly elusive. Here, we show that a metastable skyrmion-string lattice is subject to topological unwinding under the application of pulsed currents of 3-5x106 A m-2 rather than being transported, as evidenced by measurements of the topological Hall effect. The critical current density above which the topological unwinding occurs is larger for a shorter pulse width, reminiscent of the viscoelastic characteristics accompanying the pinning-creep transition observed in domain-wall motion. Numerical simulations reveal that current-induced depinning of already segmented skyrmion strings initiates the topological unwinding. Thus, the skyrmion-string length is an element to consider when studying current-induced motion.

Skyrmion formation in a bulk chiral magnet at zero magnetic field and above room temperature

We report that in a $β$-Mn-type chiral magnet Co$_9$Zn$_9$Mn$_2$, skyrmions are realized as a metastable state over a wide temperature range, including room temperature, via field-cooling through the thermodynamic equilibrium skyrmion phase that exists below a transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$ $\sim$ 400 K. The once-created metastable skyrmions survive at zero magnetic field both at and above room temperature. Such robust skyrmions in a wide temperature and magnetic field region demonstrate the key role of topology, and provide a significant step toward technological applications of skyrmions in bulk chiral magnets.

Electronic and magnetic excitations in the "half-stuffed" Cu--O planes of Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$ measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu L$_3$ edge to measure the charge and spin excitations in the "half-stuffed" Cu--O planes of the cuprate antiferromagnet Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$. The RIXS line shape reveals distinct contributions to the $dd$ excitations from the two structurally inequivalent Cu sites, which have different out-of-plane coordinations. The low-energy response exhibits magnetic excitations. We find a spin-wave branch whose dispersion follows the symmetry of a CuO$_2$ sublattice, similar to the case of the "fully-stuffed" planes of tetragonal CuO (T-CuO). Its bandwidth is closer to that of a typical cuprate material, such as Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, than it is to that of T-CuO. We interpret this result as arising from the absence of the effective four-spin inter-sublattice interactions that act to reduce the bandwidth in T-CuO.

Magnetic excitations from the two-dimensional interpenetrating Cu framework in Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$

We report detailed neutron scattering studies on Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$. The compound consists of two interpenetrating sublattices of Cu, labeled as Cu$_{\rm A}$ and Cu$_{\rm B}$, each of which forms a square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The two sublattices order at different temperatures and effective exchange couplings within the sublattices differ by an order of magnitude. This yields an inelastic neutron spectrum of the Cu$_{\rm A}$ sublattice extending up to 300 meV and a much weaker dispersion of Cu$_{\rm B}$ going up to around 20 meV. Using a single-band Hubbard model we derive an effective spin Hamiltonian. From this, we find that linear spin-wave theory gives a good description to the magnetic spectrum. In addition, a magnetic field of 10 T is found to produce effects on the Cu$_{\rm B}$ dispersion that cannot be explained by conventional spin-wave theory.

Enhanced ferromagnetic transition temperature induced by a microscopic structural rearrangement in the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te

The correlation between magnetic properties and microscopic structural aspects in the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te is investigated by x-ray diffraction and magnetization as a function of the Mn concentration $x$. The occurrence of high ferromagnetic-transition temperatures in the rhombohedrally distorted phase of slowly-cooled Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te is shown to be directly correlated with the formation and coexistence of strongly-distorted Mn-poor and weakly-distorted Mn-rich regions. It is demonstrated that the weakly-distorted phase fraction is responsible for the occurrence of high-transition temperatures in Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te. When the Mn concentration becomes larger, the Mn-rich regions start to switch into the undistorted cubic structure, and the transition temperature is suppressed concurrently. By identifying suitable annealing conditions, we successfully increased the transition temperature to above 200 K for Mn concentrations close to the cubic phase. Structural data indicate that the weakly-distorted phase fraction can be restored at the expense of the cubic regions upon the enhancement of the transition temperature, clearly establishing the direct link between high-transition temperatures and the weakly-distorted Mn-rich phase fraction.

Spin-wave spectroscopy on Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in room-temperature chiral magnets hosting skyrmions

Propagation character of spin wave was investigated for chiral magnets FeGe and Co-Zn-Mn alloys, which can host magnetic skyrmions near room temperature. On the basis of the frequency shift between counter-propagating spin waves, the magnitude and sign of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction were directly evaluated. The obtained magnetic parameters quantitatively account for the size and helicity of skyrmions as well as their materials variation, proving that the DM interaction plays a decisive role in the skyrmion formation in this class of room-temperature chiral magnets. The propagating spin-wave spectroscopy can thus be an efficient tool to study DM interaction in bulk single-phase compounds. Our results also demonstrate a function of spin-wave diode based on chiral crystal structures at room temperature.

Electrical magnetochiral effect induced by chiral spin fluctuations

Chirality of matter can produce unique responses in optics, electricity and magnetism. In particular, magnetic crystals transmit their handedness to the magnetism via antisymmetric exchange interaction of relativistic origin, producing helical spin orders as well as their fluctuations. Here we report for a chiral magnet MnSi that chiral spin fluctuations manifest themselves in the electrical magnetochiral effect (eMChE), i.e. the nonreciprocal and nonlinear response characterized by the electrical conductance depending on inner product of electric and magnetic fields $\boldsymbol{E} \cdot \boldsymbol{B}$. Prominent eMChE signals emerge at specific temperature-magnetic field-pressure regions: in the paramagnetic phase just above the helical ordering temperature and in the partially-ordered topological spin state at low temperatures and high pressures, where thermal and quantum spin fluctuations are conspicuous in proximity of classical and quantum phase transitions, respectively. The finding of the asymmetric electron scattering by chiral spin fluctuations may explore new electromagnetic functionality in chiral magnets.

Competing Exchange Interactions in the Multiferroic and Ferrimagnetic CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$

Competing exchange interactions can produce complex magnetic states together with spin-induced electric polarizations. With competing interactions on alternating triangular and kagome layers, the swedenborgite CBO may have one of the largest measured spin-induced polarizations of about 1700 nC/cm$^2$ below its ferrimagnetic transition temperature at 70 K. Powder neutron-diffraction data, magnetization measurements, and spin-wave resonance frequencies in the THz range reveal that the complex spin order of multiferroic CBO can be described as a triangular array of c-axis chains ferrimagnetically coupled to each other in the ab plane. Magnetostriction on bonds that couple those chains produces the large spin-induced polarization of CBO.
