Perovskite Manganites Hosting Versatile Multiferroic Phases with Symmetric and Antisymmetric Exchange Strictions

Complete magnetoelectric (ME) phase diagrams of orthorhombic $R$MnO$_{3}$ with and without magnetic moments on the $R$ ions have been established. Three kinds of multiferroic ground states, the $ab$-cycloidal, the $bc$-cycloidal, and the collinear $E$-type phases, have been identified by the distinct ME responses. The electric polarization of the $E$-type phase dominated by the symmetric spin exchange ($bm{S}_{i} cdot bm{S}_{j}$) is more than 10 times as large as that of the $bc$-cycloidal phase dominated by the antisymmetric one ($bm{S}_{i} times bm{S}_{j}$), and the ME response is enhanced near the bicritical phase boundary between these multiferroic phases of different origins. These findings will provide an important clue for the development of the magnetically induced multiferroics.

Epitaxial-strain effect on charge/orbital order in Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 films

Effect of growth orientation on charge- and orbital-ordering (CO-OO) phenomena has been studied for Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 epitaxial thin films fabricated on (LaAlO3)0.3-(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (LSAT) substrates by means of resistivity, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy measurements. CO-OO transition is observed around 220 K for a film grown on an LSAT (011) substrate ((011)-film), similarly to a bulk sample, while a film grown on a (001) plane of LSAT ((001)-film) shows much higher transition temperature around 300 K. The domain size of OO is approximately 3 times as large in the (011)-film as in the (001)-film. These results demonstrate that various properties of CO-OO phenomena can be controlled with the growth orientation via the epitaxial strain from the substrate.

Lattice-form dependent orbital shape and charge disproportionation in charge- and orbital-ordered manganites

The orbital shapes and charge disproportionations at nominal Mn$^{3+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ sites for the charge- and orbital-ordered phases have been studied on half-doped manganites Pr(Sr$_{0.1}$Ca$_{0.9}$)$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$ and Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ with double-layer and single-layer Mn-O networks, respectively, by means of x-ray structural analyses, in comparison with Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ with the pseudo cubic network. In a single-layer Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ system, the ($y^2-z^2$)/($z^2-x^2$)-type orbital shape is observed, while the ($3y^2-r^2$)/($3x^2-r^2$)-type orbital shape in a pseudo cubic Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ system. In a double-layer Pr(Sr$_{0.1}$Ca$_{0.9}$)$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$ system, the orbital shape is found to undergo a large change upon thermally induced rotation of orbital stripe. Furthermore, clear charge disproportionation is observed for the pseudo cubic and double-layer systems, while not in the single-layer system. These results indicate that the orbital shape and charge disproportionation are sensitive to the dimension of Mn-O network.

Low-energy excitations in electron-doped metal phthalocyanine from NMR in Li$_{0.5}$MnPc

$^7$Li and $^1$H NMR and magnetization measurements in \lpc (Pc$\equiv$C$_{32}$H$_{16}$N$_8$), recently proposed as a strongly correlated metal, are presented. Two different low-frequency dynamics are evidenced. The first one, probed by $^1$H nuclei gives rise to a slowly relaxing magnetization at low temperature and is associated with the freezing of MnPc $S=3/2$ spins. This dynamic is similar to the one observed in pristine $β$-MnPc and originates from Li depleted chain segments. The second one, evidenced by $^7$Li spin-lattice relaxation rate, is associated with the hopping of the electrons along Li-rich chains. The characteristic correlation times for the two dynamics are derived and the role of disorder is briefly discussed.

Magneto-optics induced by the spin chirality in itinerant ferromagnet Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$

It is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that the spin chirality associated with a noncoplanar spin configuration produces a magneto-optical effect. Numerical study of the two-band Hubbard model on a triangle cluster shows that the optical Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ is proportional to the spin chirality. The detailed comparative experiments on pyrochlore-type molybdates $R_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ with $R=$Nd (Ising-like moments) and $R=$Gd (Heisenberg-like ones) clearly distinguishes the two mechanisms, i.e., spin chirality and spin-orbit interactions. It is concluded that for $R$=Nd, $σ_{xy}(ω)$ is dominated by the spin chirality for the dc ($ω=0$) and the $d \to d$ incoherent intraband optical transitions between Mo atoms.

Determination of the orbital moment and crystal field splitting in LaTiO$_{3}$

Utilizing a sum-rule in a spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopic experiment with circularly polarized light, we show that the orbital moment in LaTiO$_3$ is strongly reduced both below and above the Néel temperature. Using Ti $L_{2,3}$ x-ray absorption spectroscopy as a local probe, we found that the crystal field splitting in the $t_{2g}$ subshell is about 0.12-0.30 eV. This large splitting does not facilitate the formation of an orbital liquid.

Chemical Control of Spin Chirality in $(Nd_{1-x} Dy_x)_2 Mo_2 O_7$

Magnetization and Hall resistivity have been investigated for single crystals of Dy-doped Nd$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$. A sharp decrease of the Hall resistivity upon a metamagnetic transition, perhaps associated with magnetic-field ($H$) induced flop of Dy$^{3+}$ moments, has been observed in the Dy-doped crystals only for $H \parallel [111]$ direction. In addition, the sign of the Hall resistivity at a high field, both for $H \parallel [100]$ and for $H \parallel [111]$, changes with the Dy-doping. These results are explained in terms of the sign change of Mo spin chirality that is controlled by the Dy$^{3+}$ moments with a different sign of $f$-$d$ interaction from the Nd$^{3+}$ moments.

Specific heat study of spin-structural change in pyrochlore Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$

By measurements of specific heat, we have investigated the magnetic field ($H$) induced spin-structural change in Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ that shows spin-chirality-related magneto-transport phenomena. A broad peak around 2 K caused by the ordering of 2-in 2-out structure of the Nd moments at zero $H$ shifts to the lower temperature ($T$) up to around 3 T and then to the higher $T$ above around 3 T with increasing $H$ for all the direction of $H$. This is due to the crossover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic arrangement between the Nd and Mo moments. While the peak $T$ increases monotonically above 3 T for $H$//[100], another peak emerges around 0.9 K at 12 T for $H$//[111], which is ascribed to the ordering of 3-in 1-out structure. For $H$//[110], a spike like peak is observed at around 3 T, which is caused perhaps by some spin flip transition.

Fully Gapped Single-Particle Excitations in the Lightly Doped Cuprates

The low-energy excitations of the lightly doped cuprates were studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A finite gap was measured over the entire Brillouin zone, including along the d_{x^2 - y^2} nodal line. This effect was observed to be generic to the normal states of numerous cuprates, including hole-doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and electron-doped Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}. In all compounds, the gap appears to close with increasing carrier doping. We consider various scenarios to explain our results, including the possible effects of chemical disorder, electronic inhomogeneity, and a competing phase.

An angle-resolved photoemission spectral function analysis of the electron doped cuprate Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4

Using methods made possible by recent advances in photoemission technology, we perform an indepth line-shape analysis of the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the electron doped (n-type) cuprate superconductor Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4. Unlike for the p-type materials, we only observe weak mass renormalizations near 50-70 meV. This may be indicative of smaller electron-phonon coupling or due to the masking effects of other interactions that make the electron-phonon coupling harder to detect. This latter scenario may suggest limitations of the spectral function analysis in extracting electronic self-energies when some of the interactions are highly momentum dependent.

Magnetic Order and Dynamics in an Orbitally Degenerate Ferromagnetic Insulator

Neutron scattering was used to determine the spin structure and the magnon spectrum of the Mott--Hubbard insulator YTiO$_3$. The magnetic structure is complex, comprising substantial G-type and A-type antiferromagnetic components in addition to the predominant ferromagnetic component. The magnon spectrum, on the other hand, is gapless and nearly isotropic. We show that these findings are inconsistent with the orbitally ordered states thus far proposed for YTiO$_3$ and discuss general implications for a theoretical description of exchange interactions in orbitally degenerate systems.

Doping dependence of an n-type cuprate superconductor investigated by ARPES

We present an angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) doping dependence study of the n-type cuprate superconductor Nd_2-xCe_xCuO_4, from the half-filled Mott-insulator to the T_c=24K superconductor. In Nd2CuO4, we reveal the charge-transfer band (CTB) for the first time. As electrons are doped into the system, this feature's intensity decreases with the concomitant formation of near-E_F spectral weight. At low doping, the Fermi surface is an electron-pocket (with volume ~ x) centered at (pi,0). Further doping leads to the creation of a new hole-like Fermi surface (volume ~ 1+x) centered at (pi,pi). These findings shed light on the Mott gap, its doping evolution, as well as the anomalous transport properties of the n-type cuprates.

Anomalous electronic structure and pseudogap effects in Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4

We report a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic (ARPES) study of the electron-doped (n-type) cuprate superconductor Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4. We observe regions along the Fermi surface where the near-E_F intensity is suppressed and the spectral features are broad in a manner reminiscent of the high-energy ``pseudogap'' in the underdoped p-type (hole doped) cuprates. However, instead of occurring near the (pi, 0) region, as in the p-type materials, this pseudogap falls near the intersection of the underlying Fermi surface with the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary.

Chemical Potential Shift in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$: Contrasting Behaviors of the Electron- and Hole-Doped Cuprates

We have studied the chemical potential shift in the electron-doped superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ by precise measurements of core-level photoemission spectra. The result shows that the chemical potential monotonously increases with electron doping, quite differently from La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, where the shift is suppressed in the underdoped region. If the suppression of the shift in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ is attributed to strong stripe fluctuations, the monotonous increase of the chemical potential is consistent with the absence of stripe fluctuations in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. The chemical potential jump between Nd$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ and La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ is found to be much smaller than the optical band gaps.

Dimensionality dependence of optical nonlinearity and relaxation dynamics in cuprates

Femtosecond pump-probe measurements find pronounced dimensionality dependence of the optical nonlinearity in cuprates. Although the coherent two-photon absorption (TPA) and linear absorption bands nearly overlap in both quasi-one and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) cuprates, the TPA coefficient is one order of magnitude smaller in 2D than in 1D. Furthermore, picosecond recovery of optical transparency is observed in 1D cuprates, while the recovery in 2D involves relaxation channels with a time scales of tens of picoseconds. The experimental results are interpreted within the two-band extended Hubbard model.

Superconducting Gap Anisotropy in Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$: Results from Photoemission

We have performed angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on the electron doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. A comparison of the leading edge midpoints between the superconducting and normal states reveals a small, but finite shift of 1.5-2 meV near the ($π$,0) position, but no observable shift along the zone diagonal near ($π$/2,$π$/2). This is interpreted as evidence for an anisotropic superconducting gap in the electron doped materials, which is consistent with the presence of d-wave superconducting order in this cuprate superconductor.

Spin Dynamics and Orbital State in LaTiO_3

A neutron scattering study of the Mott-Hubbard insulator LaTiO$_{3}$ (T$_{\rm N}=132$ K) reveals a spin wave spectrum that is well described by a nearest-neighbor superexchange constant $J=15.5$ meV and a small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction ($D=1.1$ meV). The nearly isotropic spin wave spectrum is surprising in view of the absence of a static Jahn-Teller distortion that could quench the orbital angular momentum, and it may indicate strong orbital fluctuations. A resonant x-ray scattering study has uncovered no evidence of orbital order in LaTiO$_{3}$.

Charge and spin ordering in Nd{1/3}Sr{2/3}FeO{3}

We have investigated the charge and spin ordering in Nd{1/3}Sr{2/3}FeO{3} with neutron diffraction technique. This sample undergoes a charge ordering transition accompanying charge disproportionation of 2Fe4+ -> Fe3+ + Fe5+. We measured the superlattice reflections due to the charge and spin ordering, and confirmed that charges and spins order simultaneously at Tco = 185 K. The ordering pattern of charges and spins in this sample can be viewed as three dimensional stripe order, and is compared with two dimensional stripe order observed in other transition metal oxides.
