Wilson ratio of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder

Using micromechanical force magnetometry, we have measured the magnetization of the strong-leg spin-1/2 ladder compound (C$_7$H$_{10}$N)$_2$CuBr$_2$ at temperatures down to 45 mK. Low-temperature magnetic susceptibility as a function of field exhibits a maximum near the critical field H_c at which the magnon gap vanishes, as expected for a gapped one-dimensional antiferromagnet. Above H_c a clear minimum appears in the magnetization as a function of temperature as predicted by theory. In this field region, the susceptibility in conjunction with our specific heat data yields the Wilson ratio R_W. The result supports the relation R_W=4K, where K is the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid parameter.

Transport properties of iron-based FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wire

FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires have been fabricated using ex-situ PIT method with an Fe sheath. Among the other FeAs-based superconductor, FeTe0.5Se0.5 has great advantage for application due to binary composition and less toxic. Surprisingly, superconducting current was observed in the as-fabricated wire without any heat treatments. Zero resistivity and transport critical current density (Jc) were 3.2 K and 2.8 A/cm2, respectively. In addition, by annealing at 200 degC for 2 h, critical temperature Tczero and Jc were enhanced up to 9.1 K, and 64.1 A/cm2, respectively. This suggests that the grain connectivity was improved by heat treatment, and superconducting property of FeTe0.5Se0.5 wire was enhanced.

Microstructure and transport properties of FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires fabricated by ex-situ Powder-in-tube process

We fabricated FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires using ex-situ Powder-in-tube method with an Fe sheath. It was amazing that superconducting current was observed in the as-drawn wire without any heat treatments. By heat treatment at 200C for 2 hours, Tczero and Jc at 4.2 K were enhanced up to 9.1 K and 64.1 A/cm2 (Ic = 182.6 mA), respectively. Furthermore, the Jc of FeTe0.5Se0.5 wire heat treated at 200C for 2 hours was not much sensitive to the applied magnetic fields. Therefore, FeTe0.5Se0.5 wires have a great potential for applications.

Nanoscale phase separation in the iron chalcogenide superconductor K0.8Fe1.6Se2 as seen via scanning nanofocused x-ray diffraction

Advanced synchrotron radiation focusing down to a size of 300 nm has been used to visualize nanoscale phase separation in the K0.8Fe1.6Se2 superconducting system using scanning nanofocus single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results show an intrinsic phase separation in K0.8Fe1.6Se2 single crystals at T< 520 K, revealing coexistence of i) a magnetic phase characterized by an expanded lattice with superstructures due to Fe vacancy ordering and ii) a non-magnetic phase with an in-plane compressed lattice. The spatial distribution of the two phases at 300 K shows a frustrated or arrested nature of the phase separation. The space-resolved imaging of the phase separation permitted us to provide a direct evidence of nanophase domains smaller than 300 nm and different micrometer-sized regions with percolating magnetic or nonmagnetic domains forming a multiscale complex network of the two phases.

Pressure study of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2

We investigated pressure effects on transition temperature (Tc) of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2 using a BeCu/NiCrAl hybrid-type clamped piston-cylinder cell. The Tc(onset) was 33K at 0.85 GPa. With increasing pressure, Tc(onset) gradually increased and reached 36.6 K at 2.03 GPa.

Intrinsic pinning property of FeSe0.5Te0.5

The intrinsic pinning properties of FeSe0.5Te0.5, which is the superconductor with Tc of about 14 K, were studied by the analysis of magnetization curves by the extended critical state model. In the magnetization measurements by SQUID magnetometer, the external magnetic fields were applied parallel and perpendicular to c-axis of the sample. The critical current density Jc's under the perpendicular field of 1 T were estimated by using the Kimishima model as about 1.6 x 10^4, 8.8 x 10^3, 4.1 x 10^3, and 1.5 x 10^3 A/cm2 at 5, 7, 9, and 11 K, respectively, and the temperature dependence of Jc could be fitted with the exponential law of Jc(0)xexp(-αT /Tc) up to 9 K and power law of Jc(0)x(1-T / Tc)n near Tc.

A study of electronic structure of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ chalcogenides by Fe and Se K-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure measurements

Fe K-edge and Se K-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements are used to study FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ electronic structure of chalcogenides. An intense Fe K-edge pre-edge peak due to Fe 1s$\to$3d (and admixed Se/Te $p$ states) is observed, showing substantial change with the Te substitution and X-ray polarization. The main white line peak in the Se K-edge XANES due to Se 1s $\to$ 4p transition appear similar to the one expected for Se$^{2-}$ systems and changes with the Te substitution. Polarization dependence reveals that unoccupied Se orbitals near the Fermi level have predominant $p_{x,y}$ character. The results provide key information on the hybridization of Fe $3d$ and chalcogen $p$ states in the Fe-based chalcogenide superconductors.

Field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase of a two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with strong leg interactions

We study the magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped quantum phase that has no magnetic long-range order into a gapless phase in the spin-1/2 ladder compound bis(2,3-dimethylpyridinium) tetrabromocuprate (DIMPY). At temperatures below about 1 K, the specific heat in the gapless phase attains an asymptotic linear temperature dependence, characteristic of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Inelastic neutron scattering and the specific heat measurements in both phases are in good agreement with theoretical calculations, demonstrating that DIMPY is the first model material for an S=1/2 two-leg spin ladder in the strong-leg regime.

Evidence of local structural inhomogeneity in FeSe(1-x)Te(x) from extended x-ray absorption fine structure

Local structure of FeSe(1-x)Te(x) has been studied by extended x-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) measurements as a function of temperature. Combination of Se and Fe K edge EXAFS has permitted to quantify the local interatomic distances and their mean-square relative displacements. The Fe-Se and Fe-Te bond lengths in the ternary system are found to be very different from the average crystallographic Fe-Se/Te distance, and almost identical to the Fe-Se and Fe-Te distances for the binary FeSe and FeTe systems, indicating distinct site occupation by the Se and Te atoms. The results provide a clear evidence of local inhomogeneities and coexisting electronic components in the FeSe1-xTex, characterized by different local structural configurations, with direct implication on the fundamental electronic structure of these superconductors.

Weak superconducting fluctuations and small anisotropy of the upper critical fields in an Fe1.05Te0.85Se0.15 single crystal

We have investigated the temperature dependence of the resistive upper critical fields ($μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}(T)$) for an Fe$_{1.05}$Te$_{0.85}$Se$_{0.15}$ single crystal, which exhibit superconductivity at $T_{\rm c} \sim 14 K, in magnetic fields of up to 55 T. Two-dimensional feature and superconducting fluctuations of the samples are found to be weak, because the resistive broadening effect on applied magnetic fields of up to 14 T is small. The Pauli paramagnetic effect is obviously evidenced by the strong suppression of the $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}^{ab}(T)$ ($H \parallel ab$) curve and nearly isotropic $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}(0) \approx 47 T is seen for both $H \parallel ab$ and $H \parallel c$. This fact is almost identical to the results of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystals reported previously. We have discussed that the small anisotropy of the upper critical field at low temperatures in Fe$_{1+y}$(Te,Se) systems against the variation of the Te/Se ratio.

Anion height dependence of Tc for the Fe-based superconductor

We have established a plot of the anion height dependence of Tc for the typical Fe-based superconductors. The plot appeared a symmetric curve with a peak around 1.38 A. Both data at ambient pressure and under high pressure obeyed the unique curve. This plot will be one of the key strategies for both understanding the mechanism of Fe-based superconductivity and search for the new Fe-based superconductors with higher Tc.

STM/STS study on large pseudogap and nodal superconducting gap in Bi2201(La) and Bi2212

In the present work, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements were carried out on underdoped $\rm Bi_2Sr_{2-{\it x}}La_{\it x}CuO_{6+δ}$ and $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ to clarify the origin of the pseudogap, in particular, the inhomogeneous large pseudogap. The nodal part of a d-wave pairing gap, which is under no influence of the inhomogeneous large pseudogap, was also examined by relating the homogeneous bottom part of the STS gap to a nodal d-wave gap in momentum space. We report that the inhomogeneous large pseudogap in the antinodal region links to a two-dimensional electronic charge order, and that the gap size of the nodal d-wave part $\rm Δ_{sc}$ scales with the superconducting critical temperature $\rm {\it T}_c$ in the pseudogap regime.

Magnetic field induced quantum phase transition of the $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnet $K_2NaCrO_8$

The magnetic properties of alkali-metal peroxychromate K$_2$NaCrO$_8$ are governed by the $S = 1/2$ pentavalent chromium cation, Cr$^{5+}$. Specific heat, magnetocalorimetry, ac magnetic susceptibility, torque magnetometry, and inelastic neutron scattering data have been acquired over a wide range of temperature, down to 60 mK, and magnetic field, up to 18 T. The magnetic interactions are quasi-two-dimensional prior to long-range ordering, where $T_N = 1.66$ K in $H = 0$. In the $T \to 0$ limit, the magnetic field tuned antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition suggests a critical field $H_c = 7.270$ T and a critical exponent $α= 0.481 \pm 0.004$. The neutron data indicate the magnetic interactions may extend over intra-planar nearest-neighbors and inter-planar next-nearest-neighbor spins.

Fluctuation-Induced Heat Release from Temperature-Quenched Nuclear Spins near a Quantum Critical Point

At a quantum critical point (QCP) -- a zero-temperature singularity in which a line of continuous phase transition terminates -- quantum fluctuations diverge in space and time, leading to exotic phenomena that can be observed at non-zero temperatures. Using a quantum antiferromagnet, we present calorimetric evidence that nuclear spins frozen in a high-temperature metastable state by temperature quenching are annealed by quantum fluctuations near the QCP. This phenomenon, with readily detectable heat release from the nuclear spins as they are annealed, serves as an excellent marker of a quantum critical region around the QCP and provides a probe of the dynamics of the divergent quantum fluctuations.

Switching current distributions and subgap structures of underdoped (Hg,Re)Ba2Ca2Cu3O8+d intrinsic Josephson junctions

We have investigated the intrinsic Josephson properties in slightly underdoped (Hg,Re)Ba2Ca2Cu3Oy [Hg(Re)1223] intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) with a dimension of 1.0x1.5x0.11 um^3. The current-voltage characteristics of the IJJs exhibit clear multiple branches with subgap structures similar to those of other cuprate superconductors. The switching current distributions P(I) from the zero-voltage to the nonzero-voltage state in the current-biased IJJs agree well with the theoretical curves of the thermally assisted escape model at temperatures above ~5 K. The plasma frequency fp of the IJJs is estimated to be 1.3 THz from the fluctuation-free critical current density of 2.0x10^5 A/cm2, which is one of the highest among cuprate superconductors, reflecting the high Tc and a relatively low anisotropy of the Re doped Hg system. The P(I) gradually becomes independent of temperature below ~5 K, which suggests a crossover of the escape process from thermal activation to quantum tunneling at such a high temperature.

Disorder-sensitive superconductivity in the iron silicide Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ studied by the Lu-site substitutions

We studied effect of non-magnetic and magnetic impurities on superconductivity in Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ by small amount substitution of the Lu site, which investigated structural, magnetic, and electrical properties of non-magnetic (Lu$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$)$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$, (Lu$_{1-x}$Y$_x$)$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$, and magnetic (Lu$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$)$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$. The rapid depression of $T_c$ by non-magnetic impurities in accordance with the increase of residual resistivity reveals the strong pair breaking dominated by disorder. We provide compelling evidence for the sign reversal of the superconducting order parameter in Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$.

Substitution Effects on FeSe Superconductor

We have investigated the effect of atomic substitutions in the FeSe system, which exhibits the simplest crystal structure among the iron-based superconductors. An enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature Tc was observed with the substitution of S or Te for Se; the Tc increased with S substitution by up to 20 %, and also increased with Te substitution up to 75 %. In contrast, Co or Ni substitutions for the Fe site significantly suppressed superconductivity. In this work we present a detailed description of the substitution technique employed to determine Tc in the FeSe system.

Cascade of magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transitions in a spin $\bm{1/2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet

We report magnetocaloric and magnetic-torque evidence that in Cs$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ -- a geometrically frustrated Heisenberg $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet -- quantum fluctuations stabilize a series of spin states at simple increasing fractions of the saturation magnetization $M_{s}$. Only the first of these states -- at $M={1/3}M_{s}$ -- has been theoretically predicted. We discuss how the higher fraction quantum states might arise and propose model spin arrangements. We argue that the first-order nature of the transitions into those states is due to strong lowering of the energies by quantum fluctuations, with implications for the general character of quantum phase transitions in geometrically frustrated systems.
