Uniform Mixing of Antiferromagnetism and High-Tc Superconductivity in Electron-doped Layers in Four-layered Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2 : A New Phenomenon in an Electron Underdoped RegimePhenomenon in an Electron Underdoped Regime

We report Cu- and F-NMR studies on a four-layered high-temperature superconductor Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2(0234F(2.0)) with apical fluorine (F-1), an undoped 55 K-superconductor with a nominal Cu2+ valence on average. We reveal that this compound exhibits the antiferromagnetism (AFM) with a Neel temperature TN=100 K despite being a Tc= 55 K-superconductor. Through a comparison with a related tri-layered cuprate Ba2Ca2Cu3O6F2 (0223F(2.0)), it is demonstrated that electrons are transferred from the inner plane (IP) to the outer plane (OP) in 0234F(2.0) and 0223F(2.0), confirming the self-doped high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) having electron and hole doping in a single compound. Remarlably, uniform mixing of AFM and HTSC takes place in both the electron-doped OPs and the hole-doped IPs in 0234F(2.0).

Odd-frequency pairing in normal metal/superconductor junctions

We study the induced odd-frequency pairing states in ballistic normal metal/superconductor (N/S) junctions where a superconductor has even-frequency symmetry in the bulk and a normal metal layer has an arbitrary length. Using the quasiclassical Green's function formalism, we demonstrate that, quite generally, the pair amplitude in the junction has an admixture of an odd-frequency component due to the breakdown of translational invariance near the N/S interface where the pair potential acquires spatial dependence. If a superconductor has even-parity pair potential (spin-singlet s-wave state), the odd-frequency pairing component with odd-parity is induced near the N/S interface, while in the case of odd-parity pair potential (spin-triplet $p_{x}$-wave or spin-singlet $d_{xy}$-wave) the odd-frequency component with even-parity is generated. We show that in conventional s-wave junctions, the amplitude of the odd-frequency pairing state is enhanced at energies corresponding to the peaks in the local density of states (LDOS). In $p_x$- and $d_{xy}$-wave junctions, the amplitude of the odd-frequency component on the S side of the N/S interface is enhanced at zero energy where the midgap Andreev resonant state (MARS) appears due to the sign change of the pair potential. The odd-frequency component extends into the N region and exceeds the even-frequency component at energies corresponding to the LDOS peak positions, including the MARS.

Theory of the tunneling spectroscopy of ferromagnetic superconductors

We study tunneling conductance in normal metal / insulator / ferromagnetic superconductor junctions. The tunneling spectra show a clear difference between spin-singlet s-wave pairing, spin-triplet opposite spin pairing and spin-triplet equal spin pairing: These pairings exhibit, respectively, gap struture, double peak structure and zero bias peak in the spectra. The obtained result may serve as a tool for determining the pairing symmetry of ferromagnetic superconductors.

A quantitative model for IcR product in d-wave Josephson junctions

We study theoretically the Josephson effect in d-wave superconductor / diffusive normal metal /insulator/ diffusive normal metal/ d-wave superconductor (D/DN/I/DN/D) junctions. This model is aimed to describe practical junctions in high-$T_C$ cuprate superconductors, in which the product of the critical Josephson current ($I_C$) and the normal state resistance ($R$) (the so-called $I_{\rm C}R$ product) is very small compared to the prediction of the standard theory. We show that the $I_{\rm C}R$ product in D/DN/I/DN/D junctions can be much smaller than that in d-wave superconductor / insulator / d-wave superconductor junctions and formulate the conditions necessary to achieve large $I_{\rm C}R$ product in D/DN/I/DN/D junctions. The proposed theory describes the behavior of $I_{\rm C}R$ products quantitatively in high-$T_{\rm C}$ cuprate junctions.

Local density of states at zigzag edge of carbon nanotubes and graphene

The electron-phonon matrix element for edge states of carbon nanotubes and graphene at zigzag edges is calculated for obtaining renormalized energy dispersion of the edge states. Self-energy correction by electron-phonon interaction contributes to the energy dispersion of edge states whose energy bandwidth is similar to phonon energy. Since the energy-uncertainty of the edge state is larger than temperature, we conclude that the single-particle picture of the edge state in not appropriate when the electron-phonon interaction is taken into account. The longitudinal acoustic phonon mode contributes to the matrix element through the on-site deformation potential because the wavefunction of the edge state has an amplitude only on one of the two sublattices. The on-site deformation potentials for the longitudinal and in-plane tangential optical phonon modes are enhanced at the boundary. The results of local density of states are compared with the recent experimental data of scanning tunneling spectroscopy.

Two-phonon contributions to inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of MgB2

Two-phonon contributions to meV-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of MgB2 at 300K are identified, in good agreement, in both intensity and energy, with a harmonic calculation using the force constant matrix from ab-inito LDA calculations. This contribution impacts the determination of the linewidth of the E2g phonon mode that is so important for the high Tc of this material. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of peaks in measurements of phonon dispersion (q>0) due to 2-phonon scattering in a non-rare-gas solid.

Andreev bound states and tunneling characteristics of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor

The tunneling characteristics of planar junctions between a normal metal and a non-centrosymmetric superconductor like CePt3Si are examined. It is shown that the superconducting phase with mixed parity can give rise to characteristic zero-bias anomalies in certain junction directions. The origin of these zero-bias anomalies are Andreev bound states at the interface. The tunneling characteristics for different directions allow to test the structure of the parity-mixed pairing state.

Odd-frequency pairing and Josephson effect at superconducting interfaces

We demonstrate that, quite generally, the spin-singlet even-parity (spin-triplet odd-parity) pair potential in a superconductor induces the odd-frequency pairing component with spin-singlet odd-parity (spin-triplet even-parity) near interfaces. The magnitude of the induced odd-frequency component is enhanced in the presence of the midgap Andreev resonant state due to the sign change of the anisotropic pair potential at the interface. The Josephson effect should therefore occur between odd- and even-frequency superconductors, contrary to the standard wisdom. A method to probe the odd-frequency superconductors is proposed.

Theory of the proximity effect in junctions with unconventional superconductors

We present a general theory of the proximity effect in junctions between diffusive normal metals (DN) and unconventional superconductors in the framework of the quasiclassical Green's function formalism. Various possible symmetry classes in a superconductor are considered which are consistent with the Pauli principle: even-frequency spin-singlet even-parity (ESE) state, even-frequency spin-triplet odd-parity (ETO) state, odd-frequency spin-triplet even-parity (OTE) state and odd-frequency spin-singlet odd-parity (OSO) state. For each of the above four cases symmetry and spectral properties of the induced pair amplitude in the DN are determined. It is shown that the pair amplitude in a DN belongs respectively to an ESE, OTE, OTE and ESE pairing state.

Theory of superconductivity of carbon nanotubes and graphene

We present a new mechanism of carbon nanotube superconductivity that originates from edge states which are specific to graphene. Using on-site and boundary deformation potentials which do not cause bulk superconductivity, we obtain an appreciable transition temperature for the edge state. As a consequence, a metallic zigzag carbon nanotube having open boundaries can be regarded as a natural superconductor/normal metal/superconductor junction system, in which superconducting states are developed locally at both ends of the nanotube and a normal metal exists in the middle. In this case, a signal of the edge state superconductivity appears as the Josephson current which is sensitive to the length of a nanotube and the position of the Fermi energy. Such a dependence distinguishs edge state superconductivity from bulk superconductivity.

Theory of Josephson effect in chiral p-wave superconductor / diffusive normal metal / chiral p-wave superconductor junctions

We study the Josephson effect between chiral p-wave superconductor / diffusive normal metal (DN) / chiral p-wave superconductor (CP/DN/CP) junctions using quasiclassical Green's function formalism with proper boundary conditions. The px+ipy-wave symmetry of superconducting order parameter is chosen which is believed to be a pairing state in Sr2RuO4. It is shown that the Cooper pairs induced in DN have an odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave symmetry, where pair amplitude is an odd function of Matsubara frequency. Despite the peculiar symmetry properties of the Cooper pairs, the behavior of the Josephson current is rather conventional. We have found that the current phase relation is almost sinusoidal and the Josephson current is proportional to exp(-L/xi), where xi is the coherence length of the Cooper pair in DN and L is the length of DN. The Josephson current between CP / diffusive ferromagnet metal (DF) / CP junctions is also calculated. It is shown that the 0-pi transition can be realized by varying temperature or junction length L similar to the case of conventional s-wave junctions. These results may serve as a guide to study superconducting state of Sr2RuO4.

Theory of Josephson effect in unconventional superconducting junctions with diffusive barriers

We study theoretically the Josephson effect in junctions based on unconventional superconductors with diffusive barriers, using the quasiclassical Green's function formalism. Generalized boundary conditions at junction interfaces applicable to unconventional superconductors are derived by calculating a matrix current within the circuit transport theory. Applying these boundary conditions, we have calculated the Josephson current in structures with various pairing symmetries. A number of predictions are made: (a) nonmonotonic temperature dependence in d-wave superconductor/diffusive normal metal/d-wave superconductor (D/DN/D) junctions, (b) anomalous current-phase relation in $p $-wave superconductor/diffusive normal metal/$p$% -wave superconductor (P/DN/P) junctions, (c) second harmonics in D/DN/D and P/DN/P junctions, (d) a double peak structure of the critical current in D/DF/D junctions, (e) enhanced Josephson current by the exchange field in S/DF/P junctions. We have also investigated peculiarities of the Josephson coupling in D/DF/D, P/DF/P and S/DF/P junctions. An oscillatory behavior of the supercurrent and the second harmonics in the current-phase relation are studied as a function of the length of the diffusive ferromagnet.

Angular dependence of Josephson currents in unconventional superconducting junctions

Josephson effect in junctions between unconventional superconductors is studied theoretically within the model describing the effects of interface roughness. The particularly important issue of applicability of the frequently used Sigrist-Rice formula for Josephson current in d-wave superconductor / insulator / d-wave superconductor junctions is addressed. We show that although the SR formula is not applicable in the ballistic case, it works well for rough interfaces when the diffusive normal metal regions exist between the d-wave superconductor and the insulator. It is shown that the SR approach only takes into account the component of the d-wave pair potential symmetric with respect to an inversion around the plane perpendicular to the interface. Similar formula can be derived for general unconventional superconductors with arbitrary angular momentum l.

Manifestation of the odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing state in diffusive ferromagnet / superconductor junctions

Using the quasiclassical Green's function formalism, we study the influence of the odd-frequency spin-triplet superconductivity on the local density of states (LDOS) in a diffusive ferromagnet (DF) attached to a superconductor. Various possible symmetry classes in a superconductor are considered which are consistent with the Pauli's principle: even-frequency spin-singlet even-parity (ESE) state, even-frequency spin-triplet odd-parity (ETO) state, odd-frequency spin-triplet even-parity (OTE) state and odd-frequency spin-singlet odd-parity (OSO) state. For each of these states, the pairing state in DF is studied. Particular attention is paid to the study of spin-singlet s-wave and spin-triplet p-wave superconductors as the examples of ESE and ETO superconductors. For spin-singlet case the magnitude of the OTE component of the pair amplitude is enhanced with the increase of the exchange field in DF. When the OTE component is dominant at low energy, the resulting LDOS in DF has a zero energy peak (ZEP). On the other hand, in DF / spin-triplet p-wave superconductor junctions LDOS has a ZEP in the absence of the exchange field, where only the OTE paring state exists. With the increase of the exchange field, the ESE component of the pair amplitude induced in DF is enhanced. Then, the resulting LDOS has a ZEP splitting. We demonstrate that the appearance of the dominant OTE component of the pair amplitude is the physical reason of the emergence of the ZEP of LDOS.

Manipulating 4f quadrupolar pair interactions in TbB2C2 using a magnetic field

Resonant soft x-ray Bragg diffraction at the Tb M4,5 edges and non resonant Bragg diffraction have been used to investigate orbitals in TbB2C2. The Tb 4f quadrupole moments are ordered in zero field below T_N and show a ferroquadrupolar alignment dictated by the antiferromagnetic order. With increasing applied field along [110] the Tb 4f magnetic dipole moments rotate in a gradual manner toward the field. The quadrupole moment is rigidly coupled to the magnetic moment and follows this field-induced rotation. The quadrupolar pair interaction is found to depend on the specific orientation of the orbitals as predicted theoretically and can be manipulated with an applied magnetic field.

Enhancement of electronic inhomogeneities due to out-of-plane disorder in Bi_2Sr_2CuO_{6+delta} superconductors observed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity in optimally doped single-layer Bi_2Sr_{1.6}L_{0.4}CuO_{6+delta}, (L-Bi2201, L=La and Gd) as well as bilayer Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} (Bi2212), superconductors has been investigated by the low-temperature scanning-tunneling-microscopy and spectroscopy. The inhomogeneous gap structures are observed above and below Tc on Gd-Bi2201. Increasing the out-of-plane disorder which is controlled by mismatch of the ionic radius between Sr and Ln results in the enhancement of pseudogap region with suppressed coherence peaks in the conductance spectrum, making the gap average larger and the gap distribution wider. The degree of electronic inhomogeneity measured by the distribution width of the gap amplitude is shown to have a correlation with Tc in optimally doped Bi2201 and Bi2212.

Theory of tunneling spectroscopy in the Larkin-Ovchinnikov state

A theory of the tunneling spectroscopy of normal metal / Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state is presented by fully taking account of the periodic modulation of pair potentials in real space. The resulting tunneling spectra have characteristic line shapes with several maxima and minima reflecting minigap structures due to the periodic pair potentials. These features are qualitatively different from tunneling spectra of Fulde-Ferrell state and those of uniform $s$- and d-wave superconductors. On the basis of calculated results, we propose a method to identify the LO state in actual experiments.

Nonmonotonic temperature dependence of critical current in diffusive d-wave junctions

We study the Josephson effect in D/I/DN/I/D junctions, where I, DN and D denote an insulator, a diffusive normal metal and a d-wave superconductor, respectively. The Josephson current is calculated based on the quasiclassical Green's function theory with a general boundary condition for unconventional superconducting junctions. In contrast to s-wave junctions, the product of the Josephson current and the normal state resistance is enhanced by making the interface barriers stronger. The Josephson current has a nonmonotonic temperature dependence due to the competition between the proximity effect and the midgap Andreev resonant states.
