The Halpha Luminosity Function and Star Formation Rate at z~0.24 Based on Subaru Deep Imaging Data

We have carried out a deep imaging survey for H$α$ emitting galaxies at $z\approx$0.24 using a narrowband filter tuned with the redshifted line. The total sky area covered is 706 arcmin$^2$ within a redshift range from 0.234 to 0.252 ($δz$=0.018). This corresponds to a volume of 3.9$\times10^3$ Mpc$^3$ when $Ω_{\rm matter}=0.3$, $Ω_Λ=0.7$, and $H_{\mathrm{0}}$=70 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ are adopted. We obtain a sample of 348 H$α$ emitting galaxies whose observed emission-line equivalent widths are greater than 12 Å. We find an extinction-corrected H$α$ luminosity density of $10^{39.65^{+0.08}_{-0.12}}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. Using the Kennicutt relation between the H$α$ luminosity and star formation rate, the star formation rate density in the covered volume is estimated as $0.036^{+0.006}_{-0.012}$ $M_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. This value is higher by a factor of 3 than the local SFR density.

Subaru Deep Survey. IV. Discovery of a Large-Scale Structure at Redshift \simeq 5

We report the discovery of a large-scale structure of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) at z=4.86 based on wide-field imaging with the prime-focus camera (Suprime-Cam) on the Subaru telescope. We observed a 25' x 45' area of the Subaru Deep Field in a narrow band (NB, lambdaC=7126 A and FWHM=73 A) together with R and i'. We isolate from these data 43 LAE candidates down to NB=25.5 mag using color criteria. Follow-up spectroscopy of five candidates suggests the contamination by low-z objects to be ~ 20%. We find that the LAE candidates are clustered in an elongated region on the sky of 20 Mpc in width and 50 Mpc in length at z=4.86, which is comparable in size to present-day large-scale structures (we adopt H0=70 km/s/Mpc, Omega0=0.3, lambda0=0.7). This elongated region includes a circular region of 12 Mpc radius of higher surface overdensity (delta=2), which may be the progenitor of a cluster of galaxies. Assuming this circular region to be a sphere with a spatial overdensity of 2, we compare our observation with predictions by Cold Dark Matter models. We find that an Omega0=0.3 flat model with sigma8=0.9 predicts the number of such spheres consistent with the observed number (one sphere in our survey volume) if the bias parameter of LAEs is b \simeq 6. This value suggests that the typical mass of dark haloes hosting LAEs at z \simeq 5 is of the order of 10^12 Msolar. Such a large mass poses an interesting question about the nature of LAEs.

The Discovery of a Very Narrow-Line Star Forming Obat a Redshift of 5.66ject

We report on the discovery of a very narrow-line star forming object beyond redshift of 5. Using the prime-focus camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope together with a narrow-passband filter centered at $λ_{\rm c}$ = 8150 Åwith passband of $Δλ$ = 120 Å, we have obtained a very deep image of the field surrounding the quasar SDSSp J104433.04$-$012502.2 at a redshift of 5.74. Comparing this image with optical broad-band images, we have found an object with a very strong emission line. Our follow-up optical spectroscopy has revealed that this source is at a redshift of $z=5.655\pm0.002$, forming stars at a rate $\sim 13 ~ h_{0.7}^{-2} ~ M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Remarkably, the velocity dispersion of Ly$α$-emitting gas is only 22 km s$^{-1}$. Since a blue half of the Ly$α$ emission could be absorbed by neutral hydrogen gas, perhaps in the system, a modest estimate of the velocity dispersion may be $\gtrsim$ 44 km s$^{-1}$. Together with a linear size of 7.7 $h_{0.7}^{-1}$ kpc, we estimate a lower limit of the dynamical mass of this object to be $\sim 2 \times 10^9 M_\odot$. It is thus suggested that LAE J1044$-$0123 is a star-forming dwarf galaxy (i.e., a subgalactic object or a building block) beyond redshift 5 although we cannot exclude a possibility that most Ly$α$ emission is absorbed by the red damping wing of neutral intergalactic matter.

Cosmic star formation history associated with QSO activity: an approach using the black hole to bulge mass correlation

The tight correlation between the masses of central black holes and their host spheroids in nearby galaxies and active galactic nuclei suggests that black hole growth is closely related to their spheroid formation. Based on our previous work regarding such a joint evolutionary scheme and the consequential black hole to bulge mass correlation, we use the X-ray luminosity function of AGN and the cosmological evolution rate which are from ROSAT X-ray surveys to estimate the cosmic star formation history associated with the black hole growth. By the Basic assumption that the major black hole growth occurs during the luminous AGN phase, the luminosity function of AGNs as a function of redshift traces not only the accretion history of the black holes but also the cosmic star formation history of the spheroids. Although the space density of the especially luminous QSOs is very low, we show that the total amount of star formation associated with the massive black hole growth is almost the same as that of Lyman Break Galaxies detected by the current optical deep surveys. We thus argue that the optical deep surveys may miss about half of the net star formation in our Universe, This is probably due to in part significant dust extinction as well as the small field of view of previous optical surveys which cannot sample such rare events with relatively short time scale. However, the far infrared emission from the dust heated by star fomation on-going during the black hole growth could sufficiently account for the observed SCUBA number counts, and would be the probable dominating energy source of the SUBA population.

Results for the Etaprime Mass from Two-Flavor Lattice QCD

We present results for the mass of the etaprime meson for two-flavor lattice QCD in the continuum limit, calculated on the CP-PACS computer, using an RG-improved gauge action and clover fermion action with tadpole-improved csw. Measurements are made at three couplings corresponding to a approx. 0.22, 0.16, 0.11 fm for four quark masses corresponding to mpi over mrho approx. 0.8, 0.75, 0.7, 0.6. Thw two-loop diagrams are evaluated using a noisy source method. Quark smearing for both one- and two- loop diagrams is successfully applied to obtain ground state signals in the etaprime channel. We obtain metaprime=0.960(87)+0.036-0.286GeV in the continuum limit, where the second error represents the systematic uncertainty coming from varying the functional form for chiral and continuum extrapolations.

I=2 Pion Scattering Phase Shift with Wilson Fermions

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the scattering phase shift for the I=2 $S$-wave two-pion system using the finite size method proposed by Lüscher. We work in the quenched approximation employing the standard plaquette action at $β=5.9$ for gluons and the Wilson fermion action for quarks. The phase shift is extracted from the energy eigenvalues of the two-pion system, which are obtained by a diagonalization of the pion 4-point function evaluated for a set of relative spatial momenta. In order to change momentum of the two-pion system, calculations are carried out on $24^3\times 60$, $32^3\times 60$, and $48^3\times 60$ lattices. The phase shift is successfully calculated over the momentum range $0 < p^2 < 0.3 {\rm GeV}^2$.

Orbital Decay and Tidal Disruption of a Star Cluster: Analytical Calculation

The orbital decay and tidal disruption of a star cluster in a galaxy is studied in an analytical manner. Owing to dynamical friction, the star cluster spirals in toward the center of the galaxy. Simultaneously, the galactic tidal field strips stars from the outskirts of the star cluster. Under an assumption that the star cluster undergoes a self-similar evolution, we obtain the condition and timescale for the star cluster to reach the galaxy center before its disruption. The result is used to discuss the fate of so-called intermediate-mass black holes with >10^3 M(sun) found recently in young star clusters of starburst galaxies and also the mass function of globular clusters in galaxies.

Mid-Infrared Identification of Faint Submillimeter Sources

Faint submillimeter sources detected with the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope have faced an identification problem due to the telescope's broad beam profile. Here we propose a new method to identify such submillimeter sources with a mid-infrared image having a finer point spread function. The Infrared Space Observatory has provided a very deep 6.7 um image of the Hawaii Deep Field SSA13. All three faint 850 um sources in this field have their 6.7 um counterparts. They have been identified with interacting galaxy pairs in optical images. These pairs are also detected in the radio. Two of them are optically faint and very red (I>24, I-K>4), one of which has a hard X-ray detection with the Chandra satellite. As these observing properties are similar to those of local ultraluminous infrared galaxies, their photometric redshifts are derived based on submillimeter to mid-infrared flux ratios assuming a spectral energy distribution (SED) of Arp220. Other photometric redshifts are obtained via chi^2 minimization between the available photometry data and template SEDs. Both estimates are in the range z=1-2, in good agreement with a spectroscopic redshift and a millimetric one. The reconstructed Arp220 SEDs with these redshift estimates are consistent with all the photometry data except Chandra's hard X-ray detection. The sources would be a few times more luminous than Arp220. With an assumption that AGN contributions are negligible, it appears that extremely high star formation rates are occurring in galaxies at high redshifts with massive stellar contents already in place.

Exploring QCD at small sea quark masses with improved Wilson-type quarks

We explore the region of small sea quark masses below $m_{PS}/m_V=0.5$ in two-flavor QCD using a mean-field improved clover quark action and an RG-improved gauge action at $a \simeq 0.2$ fm on $12^3 \times 24$ and $16^3 \times 24$ lattices. We find that instability of the standard BiCGStab algorithm at small quark masses can be mostly removed by the BiCGStab(DS-$L$) algorithm, which employs $L$-th minimal residual polynomials with a dynamical selection of $L$. We also find singular spikes of $ΔH$ in the HMC algorithm at moderate values of $Δτ$. Nature of the spike is studied. We also study finite-size effects and chiral properties of meson masses.

Dynamical fermions on anisotropic lattices

We report on our study of two-flavor full QCD on anisotropic lattices using $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks coupled with an RG-improved glue. The bare gauge and quark anisotropies corresponding to the renormalized anisotropy $ξ=a_s/a_t = 2$ are determined as functions of $β$ and $κ$, using the Wilson loop and the meson dispersion relation at several lattice cutoffs and quark masses.

Subaru Deep Survey II. Luminosity Functions and Clustering Properties of Lya Emitters at z=4.86 in the Subaru Deep Field

We report on early results from deep and wide-field narrow-band imaging on a 543 arcmin^2 area of the Subaru Deep Field. We find 87 Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=4.86(+/-0.03) which are photometrically selected by a combination of two broad bands (R and i') and one narrow band (NB711; 7126A FWHM=73A). We derive the luminosity functions (LFs) of the LAEs at Lya luminosity and at UV-continuum (1700A) luminosity. The LFs show little evolution between z=3.4 and z=4.86 either in Lya or UV-continuum emission. The amplitude of the LAE LF tends to decline at the bright magnitudes more rapidly than that of the LBG LF at similar redshifts. We calculate the angular correlation function of our LAEs up to ~15 arcmin separations. The angular correlation w(theta) is found to increase with decreasing angular separations, showing a clear signal of clustering. It is also found that the distribution of LAEs shows a large density gradient with a scale of >~15 arcmin, which would indicate the existence of a large-scale structure of LAEs on >~20h^(-1) Mpc scales. We fit the observed correlation function by Aw theta^(-0.8) to find Aw=29arcsec^(0.8). The estimated correlation length is r0=3.5(+/-0.3)h^(-1)Mpc in comoving units (Omega_m=0.3 and Omega_Lambda=0.7), which is slightly larger than the value for z~4 LBGs with i'<26. We calculate the angular correlation function for two sub-samples of the 87 LAEs divided by Lya luminosity, UV-continuum luminosity, and Lya equivalent width (EW). The Lya bright sub-sample shows a larger correlation amplitude than the Lya faint sub-sample, while no significant difference is found for the sub-samples divided by UV-continuum luminosity or EW.

A New High-Redshift Lyman alpha Emitter: Possible Superwind Galaxy at z = 5.69

During the course of our deep optical imaging survey for Ly alpha emitters at z approximately 5.7 in the field around the z=5.74 quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2, we have found a candidate strong emission-line source. Follow-up optical spectroscopy shows that the emission line profile of this object is asymmetric, showing excess red-wing emission. These properties are consistent with an identification of Ly alpha emission at a redshift of z=5.687 +/- 0.002. The observed broad line width, Delta V_{FWHM} ~= 340 km s^{-1} and excess red-wing emission also suggest that this object hosts a galactic superwind.

Mass Segregation in Star Clusters: Analytic Estimation of the Timescale

Mass segregation in a star cluster is studied in an analytical manner. We consider a two-component cluster, which consists of two types of stars with different masses. Plummer's model is used for the initial condition. We trace the overall behaviors of the probability distribution functions of the two components and obtain the timescale of mass segregation as a simple function of the cluster parameters. The result is used to discuss the origin of a black hole with mass of > 1000 M(sun) found in the starburst galaxy M82.

Charmonium Spectrum from Quenched Anisotropic Lattice QCD

We present a detailed study of the charmonium spectrum using anisotropic lattice QCD. We first derive a tree-level improved clover quark action on the anisotropic lattice for arbitrary quark mass. The heavy quark mass dependences of the improvement coefficients, i.e. the ratio of the hopping parameters $ζ=K_t/K_s$ and the clover coefficients $c_{s,t}$, are examined at the tree level. We then compute the charmonium spectrum in the quenched approximation employing $ξ= a_s/a_t = 3$ anisotropic lattices. Simulations are made with the standard anisotropic gauge action and the anisotropic clover quark action at four lattice spacings in the range $a_s$=0.07-0.2 fm. The clover coefficients $c_{s,t}$ are estimated from tree-level tadpole improvement. On the other hand, for the ratio of the hopping parameters $ζ$, we adopt both the tree-level tadpole-improved value and a non-perturbative one. We calculate the spectrum of S- and P-states and their excitations. The results largely depend on the scale input even in the continuum limit, showing a quenching effect. When the lattice spacing is determined from the $1P-1S$ splitting, the deviation from the experimental value is estimated to be $\sim$30% for the S-state hyperfine splitting and $\sim$20% for the P-state fine structure. Our results are consistent with previous results at $ξ= 2$ obtained by Chen when the lattice spacing is determined from the Sommer scale $r_0$. We also address the problem with the hyperfine splitting that different choices of the clover coefficients lead to disagreeing results in the continuum limit.

A Multi-band Photometric Study of Tidal Debris in A Compact Group of Galaxies: Seyfert's Sextet

In order to investigate the properties of the prominent tidal debris feature extending to the northeast of the compact group of galaxies Seyfert's Sextet, we analyzed multi-band (U, B, V, VR, R, I, J, H and K') photometric imaging data and obtained the following results: 1) The radial surface brightness distribution of this tidal debris in Seyfert's Sextet (TDSS) in each band appears to be well approximated by an exponential profile. 2) The observed B-V color of TDSS is similar to those of dwarf elliptical galaxies in nearby clusters. 3) Comparing the spectral energy distribution (SED) of TDSS with theoretical photometric evolution models and with the SED of the stars in the outer part of HCG 79b, we find that its SED is comparable to that of a $\sim$ 10 Gyr-old stellar population with solar metallicity, similar to the stellar population in the outer part of HCG 79b. This suggests that TDSS consists of stars that may have been liberated from HCG 79b by strong galaxy interactions, not a pre-existing dwarf galaxy previously thought.
