Calculation of $K\to π$ matrix elements in quenched domain-wall QCD

We explore the possibility for an evaluation of non-leptonic $ΔS=1$ $K$ decay amplitudes through the calculation of $K\toπ$ matrix elements using domain-wall QCD. The relation between the physical $K\toππ$ matrix elements and $K\toπ$ matrix elements deduced from chiral perturbation theory is recapitulated. Quenched numerical simulations are performed on an $16^3\times 32\times 16$ lattice at a lattice spacing $a^{-1}\approx 2$GeV for both the standard plaquette gauge action and a renormalization-group improved gauge action, and reasonable signals for $K\toπ$ matrix elements are obtained. Preliminary results are reported on the $K\toππ$ matrix elements, and results from two actions are compared.

Kaon B parameter from quenched domain-wall QCD

We report on a calculation of $B_K$ with domain wall fermion action in quenched QCD. Simulations are made with a renormalization group improved gauge action at $β=2.6$ and 2.9 corresponding to $a^{-1}\approx 2$GeV and 3GeV. Effects due to finite fifth dimensional size $N_5$ and finite spatial size $N_σ$ are examined in detail. Matching to the continuum operator is made perturbatively at one loop order. We obtain $B_K(μ= 2 {GeV})= 0.5746(61)$, where the error is statistical only, as an estimate of the continuum value in the $\msbar$ scheme with naive dimensional regularization. This value is smaller but consistent with $B_K(μ= 2 {GeV})= 0.628(42)$ obtained by the JLQCD Collaboration using the Kogut-Susskind quark action. Results for strange quark mass are also reported.

Quenched charmonium spectrum on anisotropic lattices

We present the results of quenched charmonium spectrum for S- and P-states, obtained by a relativistic heavy quark method on anisotropic lattices. Simulations are carried out using the standard plaquette gauge action and a meanfield-improved clover quark action at $a_t^{-1} = 3$--6 GeV with the renormalized anisotropy fixed to $ξ\equiv a_s/a_t =3$. We study the scaling of our fine and hyperfine mass splittings, and compare with previous results.

ISO continuum observations of quasars at z=1-4 I.Spectral energy distributions of quasars from the UV to far-infrared

Eight luminous quasars with $ -30 < M_B < -27$ at z = 1.4 - 3.7 have been observed in the mid- and far-infrared using ISO. All the quasars have been detected in the mid-infrared bands of ISOCAM, while no far-infrared detections have been made with ISOPHOT. Supplementing ISO observations with photometry in the optical and near-infrared made from the ground mostly within 17 months after the ISO observations, SEDs (Spectral Energy Distributions) from the UV to far-infrared have been obtained. SEDs (Spectral Energy Distributions) from the UV to far-infrared have been obtained while supplementing ISO observations with photometry in the optical and near-infrared made from the ground within 17 months. The SEDs are compared with the MED (Mean spectral Energy Distributions) of low-redshift quasars with $-27 < M_B < -22$. It is shown that our far-infrared observations were limited by confusion noise due to crowded sources.

Numerous Old Starburst Galaxies in the Local Universe

Old starburst galaxies are deficient in O stars, and hence do not exhibit strong line emission in the optical regime. However, there remain many B stars, which are expected to heat dust grains and generate strong continuum emission in the far-infrared. The IRAS data for a statistically complete sample of nearby galaxies reveal for the first time that such objects are as numerous as 30-40% of the local galaxy population.

Sub-parsec-scale Accleration of the Radio Jet in the Powerful Radio Galaxy NGC 6251

In order to investigate the genesis of powerful radio jet, we have mapped the central 10 pc region of the nearby radio galaxy NGC 6251 with a 0.2 pc resolution using Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) at two radio frequencies, 5 GHz and 15 GHz, we have found the sub-parsec-scale counterjet for the first time in this radio galaxy. This discovery allows us to investigate the jet acceleration based on the relativistic beaming model.

The Narrow-Line Region of Seyfert Galaxies: Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies versus Broad-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

It is known that the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the nuclear radiation of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) has different shapes with respect to that of ordinary broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (BLS1s), particularly in wavelengths of X-ray. This may cause some differences in the ionization degree and the temperature of gas in narrow-line regions (NLRs) between NLS1s and BLS1s. This paper aims to examine whether or not there are such differences in the physical conditions of NLR gas between them. For this purpose, we have compiled the emission-line ratios of 36 NLS1s and 83 BLS1s from the literature. Comparing these two samples, we have found that the line ratios of [O {\sc i}]$λ$6300/[O {\sc iii}]$λ$5007 and [O {\sc iii}]$λ$4363/[O {\sc iii}]$λ$5007, which represent the ionization degree and the gas temperature respectively, are statistically indistinguishable between NLS1s and BLS1s. Based on new photoionization model calculations, we show that these results are not inconsistent with the difference of the SED between them. The influence of the difference of SEDs on the highly ionized emission lines is also briefly discussed.

Extreme Galactic-Winds and Starburst in IR Mergers and IR QSOs

We report -as a part of a long-term study of mergers and IR QSOs- detailed spectroscopic evidences for outflow (OF) and/or Wolf Rayet features in: (i) low velocity OF in the ongoing mergers NGC 4038/39 and IRAS 23128-5919; (ii) extreme velocity OF (EVOF) in the QSOs IRAS 01003-2238 and IRAS 13218+0552; (iii) OF and EVOF in a complete sample of ultra-luminous IR galaxies/QSOs ("The IRAS 1 Jy MKO-KPNO Survey", of 118 objects). We found EVOF in IRAS 11119+3257, 14394+5332, 15130+1958 and 15462-0450. The OF components detected in these objects were mainly associated to starburst processes: i.e., to galactic-winds generated in multiple type II SN explosions and massive stars. The EVOF were detected in objects with strong starburst plus obscured IR QSOs; which suggest that interaction of both processes could generate EVOF. In addition, we analyze the presence of Wolf Rayet features in the large sample of Bright PG-QSOs (Boroson and Green 1992), and nearby mergers and galactic-wind galaxies. We found clear WR features in the Fe II QSOs (type I): PG 1244+026, 1444+407, 1448+273, 1535+547; and in the IR merger Arp 220. HST archive images of IR+BAL QSOs show in practically all of these objects "arc or shell" features probably associated to galactic-winds (i.e., to multiple type II SN explosions) and/or merger processes. Finally, we discuss the presence of extreme starburst and galactic wind as a possible evolutive link between IR merger and IR QSOs; where the relation between mergers and extreme starburst (with powerful galactic-winds) plays in important role, in the evolution of galaxies.

Deep Optical Imaging of A Compact Group of Galaxies, Seyfert's Sextet

In order to investigate the dynamical status of Seyfert's Sextet (SS), we have obtained a deep optical ($VR+I$) image of this group. Our image shows that a faint envelope, down to a surface brightness $μ_{\rm optical}$(AB) $\simeq 27$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$, surrounds the member galaxies. This envelope is irregular in shape. It is likely that this shape is attributed either to recent-past or to on-going galaxy interactions in SS. If the member galaxies have experienced a number of mutual interactions over a long timescale, the shape of the envelope should be rounder. Therefore, the irregular-shaped morphology suggests that SS is in an early phase of dynamical interaction among the member galaxies. It is interesting to note that the soft X-ray image obtained with ROSAT (Pildis et al. 1995) is significantly similar in morphology. We discuss the possible future evolution of SS briefly.

Chiral properties of domain-wall quarks in quenched QCD

We investigate the chiral properties of quenched domain-wall QCD (DWQCD) at the lattice spacings $a^{-1} \simeq 1$ and 2 GeV for both plaquette and renormalization-group (RG) improved gauge actions. In the case of the plaquette action we find that the quark mass defined through the axial Ward-Takahashi identity remains non-vanishing in the DWQCD chiral limit that the bare quark mass $m_f\to 0$ and the length of the fifth dimension $N_s\to\infty$, indicating that chiral symmetry is not realized with quenched DWQCD up to $a^{-1} \simeq 2$ GeV. The behavior is much improved for the RG-improved gauge action: while a non-vanishing quark mass remains in the chiral limit at $a^{-1}\simeq 1$ GeV, the result at $a^{-1}\simeq 2$ GeV is consistent with an exponentially vanishing quark mass in the DWQCD chiral limit, indicating the realization of exact chiral symmetry. An interpretation and implications are briefly discussed.

ISO deep far-infrared survey in the "Lockman Hole" II. Power spectrum analysis: evidence of a strong evolution in number counts

We investigate the characteristics of FIR brightness fluctuations at 90 micron and 170 micron in the Lockman Hole, which were surveyed with ISOPHOT aboard the Infrared Space Observatory(ISO). We first calculated the angular correlation function of each field and then its Fourier transform(the angular Power Spectral Density: PSD) over the spatial frequency range of f=0.05 - 1 arcmin^-1. The PSDs are found to be rather flat at low spatial frequencies (f <= 0.1 arcmin^-1), slowly decreasing toward higher frequencies. These spectra are unlike the power-law ones seen in the IR cirrus fluctuations, and are well explained by randomly distributed point sources. Furthermore, point-to-point comparison between 90 micron and 170 micron brightness shows a linear correlation between them, and the slope of the linear fit is much shallower than that expected from the IR cirrus color, and is consistent with the color of galaxies at low or moderate redshift(z < 1). We conclude that the brightness fluctuations in the Lockman Hole are not caused by the IR cirrus, but are most likely due to faint star-forming galaxies. We also give the constraints on the galaxy number counts down to 35 mJy at 90 micron and 60 mJy at 170 micron, which indicate the existence of a strong evolution down to these fluxes in the counts. The galaxies responsible for the fluctuations also significantly contribute to the cosmic infrared background radiation.

Dwarf galaxy formation induced by galaxy interactions

Growing evidence has been accumulated for that some gas-rich dwarf galaxies are formed from material liberated by galaxy collisions and/or mergers. Also, gas-poor dwarf elliptical galaxies are often found in the central regions of clusters of galaxies. These observations suggest strongly that the formation of most dwarf galaxies is linked to galaxy interactions. Therefore, now seems like the right time to investigate the formation efficiency of such tidal dwarf galaxies. Adopting the galaxy interaction scenario proposed by Silk & Norman, we find that if only a few dwarf galaxies are formed in each galaxy collision, we are able to explain the observed morphology-density relations for both dwarf and giant galaxies in the field, groups of galaxies, and clusters of galaxies. It seems worthwhile noting that the tidal dwarf formation may be coupled with the transformation from gas-rich disk galaxies to early-type galaxies such as S0 and elliptical galaxies.

A Dynamical Study of Galaxies in the Hickson Compact Groups

In order to investigate dynamical properties of spiral galaxies in the Hickson compact groups (HCGs), we present rotation curves of 30 galaxies in 20 HCGs. We found as follows. 1) There is not significant relation between dynamical peculiarity and morphological peculiarity in HCG spirals. 2) There is no significant relation between the dynamical properties and the frequency distribution of nuclear activities in HCG spirals. 3) There are no significant correlations between the dynamical properties of HCG spirals and any group properties (i.e., the size, the velocity dispersion, the galaxy number density, and the crossing time). 4) Asymmetric and peculiar rotation curves are more frequently seen in the HCG spirals than in field spirals and in cluster ones. However, this tendency is more obviously seen in late-type HCG spirals. These results suggest that the dynamical properties of HCG spirals do not strongly correlate with the morphology, the nuclear activity, and the group properties. Our results also suggest that more frequent galaxy collisions occur in the HCGs than in the field and in the clusters.

How Do We See the Nuclear Region (r < 0.1 pc) of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies?

We propose two statistical tests to investigate how we see the nuclear region (r < 0.1 pc) of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). 1) The high-ionization nuclear emission-line region (HINER) test: Seyfert 1 galaxies (S1s) have systematically higher flux ratios of [Fe VII] lambda 6087 to [O III] lambda 5007 than Seyfert 2 galaxies (S2s). This is interpreted in that a significant part of the [Fe VII] lambda 6087 emission arises from the inner walls of dusty tori that cannot be seen in S2s (Murayama & Taniguchi 1998a,b). 2) The mid-infrared test: S1s have systematically higher flux ratios of the L band (3.5 micrometer) to the IRAS 25 micrometer band than S2s. This is also interpreted in that a significant part of the L band emission arises from the inner walls of dusty tori, because the tori are optically thick enough to absorb the L band emission if the tori are viewed nearly edge on (Murayama et al. 2000). Applying these tests to a sample of NLS1s, we have found that the NLS1s possibly have nearly the same properties as S1s.

Large-Scale Regular Morphological Patterns in the Radio Jet of NGC 6251

We report on large-scale, regular morphological patterns found in the radio jet of the nearby radio galaxy NGC 6251. Investigating morphological properties of this radio jet from the nucleus to a radial distance of $\sim$ 300 arcsec ($\approx$ 140 kpc) mapped at 1662 MHz and 4885 MHz by Perley, Bridle, & Willis, we find three chains, each of which consists of five radio knots. We also find that eight radio knots in the first two chains consist of three small sub-knots (the triple-knotty substructures). We discuss the observational properties of these regular morphological patterns.

This discovery allows us to investigate the jet acceleration based on the relativistic beaming model (Ghisellini et al. 1993).

Grain Survival in Supernova Remnants and Herbig-Haro Objects

By using the flux ratio [FeII]8617/[OI]6300, we demonstrate that most of the interstellar dust grains survive in shocks associated with supernova remnants and Herbig-Haro objects. The [FeII]/[OI] flux ratio is sensitive to the gas-phase Fe/O abundance ratio, but is insensitive to the ionization state, temperature, and density of the gas. We calculate the [FeII]/[OI] flux ratio in shocks, and compare the results with the observational data. When only 20% of iron is in the gas phase, the models reproduce most successfully the observations. This finding is in conflict with the current consensus that shocks destroy almost all the grains and 100% of metals are in the gas phase. We comment on previous works on grain destruction, and discuss why grains are not destroyed in shocks.
