Mott-insulator to metal transition in filling-controlled SmMnAsO_{1-x}

Transport and magnetic properties have been systematically investigated for SmMnAsO_{1-x} with controlled electron-doping. As the electron band-filling is increased with the increase of oxygen deficiency (x), the resistivity monotonically decreases and the transition from Mott-insulator to metal occurs between x=0.17 and 0.2. Seebeck coefficient at room temperature abruptly changes around the critical doping level from a large value (\sim -300 μV/K) to a small one (\sim -50 μV/K) both with negative sign. In the metallic compounds with x=0.2 and x=0.3, Mn spins order antiferromagnetically around 30 K, and the Hall coefficient with the negative sign shows a reduction in magnitude upon the magnetic transition, indicating the change in the multiple Fermi surfaces. Gigantic positive magnetoresistance effect is observed in a wide range of temperature, reaching up to 60 % at 2 K for the x=0.3 compound. The effect is attributed to the field-induced change of the complex Fermi surfaces in this multi-orbital correlated electron system.

Dynamical magnetoelectric effects in multiferroic oxides

Multiferroics with coexistent ferroelectric and magnetic orders can provide an interesting laboratory to test unprecedented magnetoelectric responses and their possible applications. One such example is the dynamical and/or resonant coupling between magnetic and electric dipoles in a solid. As the examples of such dynamical magnetoelectric effects, (1) the multiferroic domain wall dynamics and (2) the electric-dipole active magnetic responses are discussed with the overview of recent experimental observations.

Magnetic-field induced competition of two multiferroic orders in a triangular-lattice helimagnet MnI2

Magnetic and dielectric properties with varying magnitude and direction of magnetic field H have been investigated for a triangular lattice helimagnet MnI2. The in-plane electric polarization P emerges in the proper screw magnetic ground state below 3.5 K, showing the rearrangement of six possible multiferroic domains as controlled by the in-plane H. With every 60-degree rotation of H around the [001]-axis, discontinuous 120-degree flop of P-vector is observed as a result of the flop of magnetic modulation vector q. With increasing the in-plane H above 3 T, however, the stable q-direction changes from q||<1-10> to q||<110>, leading to a change of P-flop patterns under rotating H. At the critical field region (~3 T), due to the phase competition and resultant enhanced q-flexibility, P-vector smoothly rotates clockwise twice while H-vector rotates counter-clockwise once.

Thermoelectric response in the incoherent transport region near Mott transition: the case study of La1-xSrxVO3

We report a systematic investigation on the high-temperature thermoelectric response in a typical filling-control Mott transition system La1-xSrxVO3. In the vicinity of the Mott transition, incoherent charge transport appears with increasing temperature and the thermopower undergoes two essential crossovers, asymptotically approaching the limit values expected from the entropy consideration, as known as Heikes formula. By comparison with the results of the dynamical mean field theory, we show that the thermopower in the Mott critical state mainly measures the entropy per charge carrier that depends on electronic degrees of freedom available at the measurement temperature. Our findings verify that the Heikes formula is indeed applicable to the real correlated electron systems at practical temperatures (T>200K).

Pseudogap of metallic layered nickelate R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu) crystals measured using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have investigated charge dynamics and electronic structures for single crystals of metallic layered nickelates, R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu), isostructural to La2-xSrxCuO4. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the barely-metallic Eu0.9Sr1.1NiO4 (R=Eu, x=1.1) has revealed a large hole surface of x2-y2 character with a high-energy pseudogap of the same symmetry and comparable magnitude with those of underdoped (x<0.1) cuprates, although the antiferromagnetic interactions are one order of magnitude smaller. This finding strongly indicates that the momentum-dependent pseudogap feature in the layered nickelate arises from the real-space charge correlation.

Large Magnetoresistance and Spin-Polarized Heavy-Mass Electron State in a Doped Valence Bond Solid (Ti1-xVx)2O3

A heavy-mass electron state is realized in a doped valence bond solid (Ti1-xVx)2O3. In this system, itinerant holes mediate the mainly ferromagnetic RKKY interaction between the localized magnetic moments and become readily spin-polarized under a magnetic field, while showing large negative magnetoresistance. In spite of the ferromagnetic interaction among the carriers, their effective mass is found to be 1 or 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of usual doped semiconductors. Such strong mass renormalization is ascribable to the polaron formation on the Ti-dimer, where the spin-singlet state is originally formed. Doping dependence of the electronic specific-heat coefficient implies that the dimeric lattice fluctuation or softening is responsible for the enhanced electron-phonon interaction.

Aharonov-Bohm Oscillations Changed by Indirect Interdot Tunneling via Electrodes in Parallel-Coupled Vertical Double Quantum Dots

Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations are studied for a parallel coupled vertical double quantum dot with a common source and drain electrode. We observe AB oscillations of current via a one-electron bonding state as the ground state and an anti-bonding state as the excited state. As the center gate voltage becomes more negative, the oscillation period is clearly halved for both the bonding and antibonding states, and the phase changes by half a period for the antibonding state. This result can be explained by a calculation that takes account of the indirect interdot coupling via the two electrodes.

Gigantic terahertz magnetochromism via electromagnons in hexaferrite magnet Ba$_2$Mg$_2$Fe$_{12}$O$_{22}$

Effects of temperature (6--225 K) and magnetic field (0--7 T) on the low-energy (1.2--5 meV) electrodynamics of the electromagnon, the magnetic resonance driven by the light electric field, have been investigated for a hexaferrite magnet Ba$_2$Mg$_2$Fe$_{12}$O$_{22}$ by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. We find the gigantic terahertz magnetochromism via electromagnons; the magnetochromic change, as defined by the difference of the absorption intensity with and without magnetic field, exceeds 500% even at 0.6 T. The results arise from the fact that the spectral intensity of the electromagnon critically depends on the magnetic structure. With changing the conical spin structures in terms of the conical angle $θ$ from the proper screw ($θ=0^\circ$) to the ferrimagnetic ($θ=90^\circ$) through the conical spin-ordered phases ($0^\circ<θ<90^\circ$) by external magnetic fields, we identify the maximal magnetochromism around $θ\approx45^\circ$. On the contrary, there is no remarkable signature of the electromagnon in the proper screw and spin-collinear (ferrimagnetic) phases, clearly indicating the important role of the conical spin order to produce the magnetically-controllable electromagnons. The possible origin of this electromagnon is argued in terms of the exchange-striction mechanism.

Giant directional dichroism of terahertz light in resonance with magnetic excitations of the multiferroic oxide BaCo$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$

We propose that concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric, i.e. multiferroic, compounds endowed with electrically-active magnetic excitations (electromagnons) provide a key to produce large directional dichroism for long wavelengths of light. By exploiting the control of ferroelectric polarization and magnetization in a multiferroic oxide Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$, we demonstrate the realization of such a directional light-switch function at terahertz frequecies in resonance with the electromagnon absorption. Our results imply that this hidden potential is present in a broad variety of multiferroics.

Impact of bicritical fluctuation on magnetocaloric phenomena in perovskite manganites

Variation of magnetocaloric (MC) effects has been systematically investigated for colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganites R0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (R=La-Gd). As the one-electron bandwidth is reduced, the temperature profile of MC effect, i.e., field-induced entropy change, exhibits a steeper drop below the ferromagnetic transition temperature due to its first-order nature promoted by a competing charge-orbital ordering instability. For these small-bandwidth systems adjacent to the metal-insulator phase boundary, a rectangular-shaped profile for the entropy change emerges with an anomalously wide temperature range and a considerable magnitude. Model calculations have indicated that the fluctuation enhanced in the phase-competing region has a strong impact on such MC features, which can be extensively controlled by the chemical composition.

Electrons doped in cubic perovskite SrMnO3: isotropic metal versus chainlike ordering of Jahn-Teller polarons

Single crystals of electron-doped SrMnO3 with a cubic perovskite structure have been systematically investigated as the most canonical (orbital-degenerate) double-exchange system, whose ground states have been still theoretically controversial. With only 1-2% electron doping by Ce substitution for Sr, a G-type antiferromagnetic metal with a tiny spin canting in a cubic lattice shows up as the ground state, where the Jahn-Teller polarons with heavy mass are likely to form. Further electron doping above 4%, however, replaces this isotropic metal with an insulator with tetragonal lattice distortion, accompanied by a quasi-one-dimensional 3z^2-r^2 orbital ordering with the C-type antiferromagnetism. The self-organization of such dilute polarons may reflect the critical role of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect that is most effective in the originally cubic system.

Cupric chloride CuCl2 as an S=1/2 chain multiferroic

Magnetoelectric properties were investigated for an S=1/2 chain antiferromagnet CuCl2, which turns out to be the first example of non-chalcogen based spiral-spin induced multiferroics. Upon the onset of helimagnetic order propagating along the b-axis under zero magnetic field (H), we found emergence of ferroelectric polarization along the c-axis. Application of H along the b-axis leads to spin-flop transition coupled with drastic suppression of ferroelectricity, and rotation of H around the b-axis induces the rotation of spin-spiral plane and associated polarization direction. These behaviors are explained well within the framework of the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya model, suggesting the robustness of this magnetoelectric coupling mechanism even under the strong quantum fluctuation.

Electromagnons in the spin collinear state of a triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy was performed to directly probe the low-energy (1-5 meV) electrodynamics of triangular lattice antiferromagnets CuFe1-xGaxO2 (x = 0.00, 0.01, and 0.035). We discovered an electromagnon (electric-field-active magnon) excitation at 2.3 meV in the paraelectric up-up-down-down collinear magnetic phase, while this electromagnon vanishes in the ferroelectric helimagnetic phase. Anti-correlation with noncollinear magnetism excludes the exchange-striction mechanism as the origin of dynamical magnetoelectric coupling, and hence evidences the observation of spin-orbit coupling mediated electromagnon in the present compound.

Observation of the Magnon Hall Effect

The Hall effect usually occurs when the Lorentz force acts on a charge current in a conductor in the presence of perpendicular magnetic field. On the other hand, neutral quasi-particles such as phonons and spins can carry heat current and potentially show the Hall effect without resorting to the Lorentz force. We report experimental evidence for the anomalous thermal Hall effect caused by spin excitations (magnons) in an insulating ferromagnet with a pyrochlore lattice structure. Our theoretical analysis indicates that the propagation of the spin wave is influenced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin-orbit interaction, which plays the role of the vector potential as in the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in metallic ferromagnets.

Transport properties of two laterally coupled vertical quantum dots in series with tunable inter-dot coupling

We describe the electronic properties of a double dot for which the lateral coupling between the two vertical dots can be controlled in-situ with a center gate voltage (Vc) and the current flows through the two dots in series. When Vc is large and positive, the two dots merge. As Vc is made less positive, two dots are formed whose coupling is reduced. We measure charging diagrams for positive and negative source-drain voltages in the weak coupling regime and observe current rectification due to the Pauli spin blockade when the hyperfine interaction between the electrons and the nuclei is suppressed.

Ferroelectricity induced by spin-dependent metal-ligand hybridization in Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$

We have investigated the variation of induced ferroelectric polarization under magnetic field with various directions and magnitudes in a staggered antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$. While the ferroelectric polarization cannot be explained by the well-accepted spin current model nor exchange striction mechanism, we have shown that it is induced by the spin-dependent $p$-$d$ hybridization between the transition-metal (Co) and ligand (O) via the spin-orbit interaction. On the basis of the correspondence between the direction of electric polarization and the magnetic state, we have also demonstrated the electrical control of the magnetization direction.

Dephasing in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer containing a lateral double quantum dot induced by coupling with a quantum dot charge sensor

We theoretically investigated the dephasing in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer containing a lateral double quantum dot induced by coupling with a quantum dot charge sensor. We employed the interpolative 2nd-order perturbation theory to include the charge sensing Coulomb interaction. It is shown that the visibility of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation of the linear conductance decreases monotonically as the sensing Coulomb interaction increases. In particular, for a weak sensing interaction regime, the visibility decreases parabolically, and it behaves linearly for a strong sensing interaction regime.
