Fast Phase-manipulation of the Single Nuclear Spin in Solids by Rotating Fields

We propose fast phase-gates of single nuclear spins interacting with single electron spins. The gate operation utilizes geometric phase shifts of the electron spin induced by fast/slow rotating fields; the path difference depending on nuclear spin states enables nuclear phase shifts. The gate time is inversely proportional to the frequency of the slow rotating field. As an example, we use nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, and show the phase-gate time orders of magnitude shorter than previously reported. We also show the robustness of the gate against decoherence and systematic errors.

Magnetic relaxation phenomena in the Chiral Magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si: An ac susceptibility study

We present a systematic study of the ac susceptibility of the chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si with $x$ = 0.30 covering four orders of magnitude in frequencies from 0.1 Hz to 1 kHz, with particular emphasis to the pronounced history dependence. Characteristic relaxation times ranging from a few milliseconds to tens of seconds are observed around the skyrmion lattice A-phase, the helical-to-conical transition and in a region above $T_C$. The distribution of relaxation frequencies around the A-phase is broad, asymmetric and originates from multiple coexisting relaxation processes. The pronounced dependence of the magnetic phase diagram on the magnetic history and cooling rates as well as the asymmetric frequency dependence and slow dynamics suggest more complicated physical phenomena in Fe$_{0.7}$Co$_{0.3}$Si than in other chiral magnets.

Extended skyrmion lattice scattering and long-time memory in the chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si

Small angle neutron scattering measurements on a bulk single crystal of the doped chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si with $x$=0.3 reveal a pronounced effect of the magnetic history and cooling rates on the magnetic phase diagram. The extracted phase diagrams are qualitatively different for zero and field cooling and reveal a metastable skyrmion lattice phase outside the A-phase for the latter case. These thermodynamically metastable skyrmion lattice correlations coexist with the conical phase and can be enhanced by increasing the cooling rate. They appear in a wide region of the phase diagram at temperatures below the $A$-phase but also at fields considerably smaller or higher than the fields required to stabilize the A-phase.

AC transport and full-counting statistics of molecular junctions in the weak electron-vibration coupling regime

The coupling of the charge carriers passing through a molecule bridging two bulky conductors with local vibrational modes of the molecule, gives rise to distinct features in the electronic transport properties on one hand, and to nonequilibrium features in the vibrations' properties, e.g., their population, on the other. Here we explore theoretically a generic model for a molecular junction biased by an arbitrary dc voltage in the weak-coupling regime. We analyze the signature of the electron-vibration interaction on the full-counting statistics of the current fluctuations (i.e., the cumulant generating-function of the current correlations), we give a detailed account of the response to an ac field exerted on the junction (on top of the dc bias voltage), we study the nonequilibrium distribution of the vibrational modes and the fluctuations they cause in the displacement of the molecule center of mass. The calculations use the technique of nonequilibrium Green's functions, and treat the electron-vibration coupling in perturbation theory, within the random-phase approximation when required.

Large Unidirectional Magnetoresistance in a Magnetic Topological Insulator

We report current-direction dependent or unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) in magnetic/nonmagnetic topological insulator (TI) heterostructures, Cr$_x$(Bi$_{1-y}$Sb$_y$)$_{2-x}$Te$_3$/(Bi$_{1-y}$Sb$_y$)$_2$Te$_3$, that is several orders of magnitude larger than in other reported systems. From the magnetic field and temperature dependence, the UMR is identified to originate from the asymmetric scattering of electrons by magnons. In particular, the large magnitude of UMR is an outcome of spin-momentum locking and a small Fermi wavenumber at the surface of TI. In fact, the UMR is maximized around the Dirac point with the minimal Fermi wavenumber.

Interface-driven topological Hall effect in SrRuO$_3$-SrIrO$_3$ bilayer

Electron transport coupled with magnetism has attracted attention over the years as exemplified in anomalous Hall effect due to a Berry phase in momentum space. Another type of unconventional Hall effect -- topological Hall effect, originating from the real-space Berry phase, has recently become of great importance in the context of magnetic skyrmions. We have observed topological Hall effect in bilayers consisting of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ and paramagnetic SrIrO$_3$ over a wide region of both temperature and magnetic field. The topological term rapidly decreases with the thickness of SrRuO$_3$, ending up with the complete disappearance at 7 unit cells of SrRuO$_3$. Combined with model calculation, we concluded that the topological Hall effect is driven by interface Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which is caused by both the broken inversion symmetry and the strong spin-orbit coupling of SrIrO$_3$. Such interaction is expected to realize the Néel-type magnetic skyrmion, of which size is estimated to be $\sim$10 nm from the magnitude of topological Hall resistivity. The results established that the high-quality oxide interface enables us to tune the chirality of the system; this can be a step towards the future topological electronics.

Local dynamics of topological magnetic defects in the itinerant helimagnet FeGe

Chiral magnetic interactions induce complex spin textures including helical and conical spin waves, as well as particle-like objects such as magnetic skyrmions and merons. These spin textures are the basis for innovative device paradigms and give rise to exotic topological phenomena, thus being of interest for both applied and fundamental sciences. Present key questions address the dynamics of the spin system and emergent topological defects. Here we analyze the micromagnetic dynamics in the helimagnetic phase of FeGe. By combining magnetic force microscopy, single-spin magnetometry, and Landau-Lifschitz-Gilbert simulations we show that the nanoscale dynamics are governed by the depinning and subsequent motion of magnetic edge dislocations. The motion of these topologically stable objects triggers perturbations that can propagate over mesoscopic length scales. The observation of stochastic instabilities in the micromagnetic structure provides new insight to the spatio-temporal dynamics of itinerant helimagnets and topological defects, and discloses novel challenges regarding their technological usage.

Spin excitations used to probe the nature of the exchange coupling in the magnetically ordered ground state of Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$

We have used time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering to measure the spin wave spectrum of the canonical half-doped manganite Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$, in its magnetic and orbitally ordered phase. The data, which cover multiple Brillouin zones and the entire energy range of the excitations, are compared with several different models that are all consistent with the CE-type magnetic order, but arise through different exchange coupling schemes. The Goodenough model, i.e. an ordered state comprising strong nearest neighbor ferromagnetic interactions along zig-zag chains with antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling, provides the best description of the data, provided that further neighbor interactions along the chains are included. We are able to rule out a coupling scheme involving formation of strongly bound ferromagnetic dimers, i.e. Zener polarons, on the basis of gross features of the observed spin wave spectrum. A model with weaker dimerization reproduces the observed dispersion but can be ruled out on the basis of discrepancies between the calculated and observed structure factors at certain positions in reciprocal space. Adding further neighbor interactions results in almost no dimerization, i.e. recovery of the Goodenough model. These results are consistent with theoretical analysis of the degenerate double exchange model for half-doping, and provide a recipe for how to interpret future measurements away from half-doping, where degenerate double exchange models predict more complex ground states.

Photo-creating supercooled spiral-spin states in a multiferroic manganite

We demonstrate that dynamics of the ab-spiral-spin order in a magnetoelectric multiferroic Eu0.55Y0.45MnO3 can be unambiguously probed through optical second harmonic signals, generated via the spin-induced ferroelectric polarization. In the case of relatively weak photoexcitation, the ferroelectric and the spiral-spin order remains interlocked, both relaxing through spin-lattice relaxation in the non-equilibrium state. When the additional optical pulse illuminating sample is intense enough to induced a local phase transition thermally, the system creates a metastable state of the bc-spiral-spin order (with the electric polarization P//c) via supercooling across the first-order phase transition between ab- and bc-spiral. The supercooled state of bc-spiral spin is formed in the thermodynamical ground state of ab-spiral (P//a), displaying a prolonged lifetime with strong dependence on the magnetic field along the a-axis. The observed photo-switching between the two distinct multiferroic states sheds light on novel photoinduced phenomena in spiral-spin multiferroics.

Robust metastable skyrmions and their triangular-square lattice-structural transition in a high-temperature chiral magnet

Skyrmions, topologically-protected nanometric spin vortices, are being investigated extensively in various magnets. Among them, many of structurally-chiral cubic magnets host the triangular-lattice skyrmion crystal (SkX) as the thermodynamic equilibrium state. However, this state exists only in a narrow temperature and magnetic-field region just below the magnetic transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$, while a helical or conical magnetic state prevails at lower temperatures. Here we describe that for a room-temperature skyrmion material, $β$-Mn-type Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$, a field-cooling via the equilibrium SkX state can suppress the transition to the helical or conical state, instead realizing robust metastable SkX states that survive over a very wide temperature and magnetic-field region, including down to zero temperature and up to the critical magnetic field of the ferromagnetic transition. Furthermore, the lattice form of the metastable SkX is found to undergo reversible transitions between a conventional triangular lattice and a novel square lattice upon varying the temperature and magnetic field. These findings exemplify the topological robustness of the once-created skyrmions, and establish metastable skyrmion phases as a fertile ground for technological applications.

Temperature and magnetic field dependence of the internal and lattice structures of skyrmions by off-axis electron holography

The internal and lattice structures of magnetic skyrmions in B20-type FeGe are investigated using off-axis electron holography. The temperature, magnetic field and angular dependence of the magnetic moments of individual skyrmions are analyzed. Whereas the internal skyrmion shape is found to vary with magnetic field, the inter-skyrmion distance remains almost unchanged in the lattice phase. The amplitude of the local magnetic moment is found to depend on temperature, while the skyrmion shape does not. Deviations from a circular to a hexagonal skyrmion structure are observed in the lattice phase.

Heat-Treatment-Induced Switching of Magnetic States in the Doped Polar Semiconductor Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Te

Cross-control of a material property - manipulation of a physical quantity (e.g., magnetisation) by a nonconjugate field (e.g., electrical field) - is a challenge in fundamental science and also important for technological device applications. It has been demonstrated that magnetic properties can be controlled by electrical and optical stimuli in various magnets. Here we find that heat-treatment allows the control over two competing magnetic phases in the Mn-doped polar semiconductor GeTe. The onset temperatures $T_{\rm c}$ of ferromagnetism vary at low Mn concentrations by a factor of five to six with a maximum $T_{\rm c} \approx 180$ K, depending on the selected phase. Analyses in terms of synchrotron x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy indicate a possible segregation of the Mn ions, which is responsible for the high-$T_{\rm c}$ phase. More importantly, we demonstrate that the two states can be switched back and forth repeatedly from either phase by changing the heat-treatment of a sample, thereby confirming magnetic phase-change- memory functionality.

Observation of topological Faraday and Kerr rotations in quantum anomalous Hall state by terahertz magneto-optics

Electrodynamic responses from three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) are characterized by the universal magnetoelectric $E\cdot B$ term constituent of the Lagrangian formalism. The quantized magnetoelectric coupling, which is generally referred to as topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect, has been predicted to induce exotic phenomena including the universal low-energy magneto-optical effects. Here we report the experimental demonstration of the long-sought TME effect, which is exemplified by magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr rotations in the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states of magnetic TI surfaces by terahertz magneto-optics. The universal relation composed of the observed Faraday and Kerr rotation angles but not of any material parameters (e.g. dielectric constant and magnetic susceptibility) well exhibits the trajectory toward the fine structure constant $α$ $(= 2πe^2/hc \sim 1/137)$ in the quantized limit. Our result will pave a way for versatile TME effects with emergent topological functions.

Thermal generation of spin current in a helimagnetic multiferroic hexaferrite

We report the experimental observation of longitudinal spin Seebeck effect in a multiferroic helimagnet Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22. Temperature gradient applied normal to Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22/Pt interface generates inverse spin Hall voltage of spin current origin in Pt, whose magnitude was found to be proportional to bulk magnetization of Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22 even through the successive magnetic transitions among various helimagnetic and ferrimagnetic phases. This finding demonstrates that the helimagnetic spin wave can be an effective carrier of spin current. By controlling the population ratio of spin-helicity domains characterized by clockwise/counter-clockwise manner of spin rotation with use of poling electric field in the ferroelectric helimagnetic phase, we found that spin-helicity domain distribution does not affect the magnitude of spin current injected into Pt. The results suggest that the spin-wave spin current is rather robust against the spin-helicity domain wall, unlike the case with the conventional ferromagnetic domain wall.

Long-lived binary tunneling spectrum in a quantum-Hall Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid

The existence of long-lived non-equilibrium states without showing thermalization, which has previously been demonstrated in time evolution of ultracold atoms, suggests the possibility of their spatial analogue in transport behavior of interacting electrons in solid-state systems. Here we report long-lived non-equilibrium states in one-dimensional edge channels in the integer quantum Hall regime. An indirect heating scheme in a counterpropagating configuration is employed to generate a non-trivial binary spectrum consisting of high- and low-temperature components. This unusual spectrum is sustained even after travelling 5 - 10 μm, much longer than the length for electronic relaxation (about 0.1 μm), without showing significant thermalization. This observation is consistent with the integrable model of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The long-lived spectrum implies that the system is well described by non-interacting plasmons, which are attractive for carrying information for a long distance.

Enhanced photogalvanic current in topological insulators via Fermi energy tuning

We achieve the enhancement of circular photogalvanic effect arising from the photo-injection of spins in topological insulator thin films by tuning the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$). A series of (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_3$ thin films were tailored so that the Fermi energy ranges above 0.34 eV to below 0.29 eV of the Dirac point, i.e., from the bulk conduction band bottom to the valence band top through the bulk in-gap surface-Dirac cone. The circular photogalvanic current, indicating a flow of spin-polarized surface-Dirac electrons, shows a pronounced peak when the $E_{\rm F}$ is set near the Dirac point and is also correlated with the carrier mobility. Our observation reveals that there are substantial scatterings between the surface-Dirac and bulkstate electrons in the generation process of spin-polarized photocurrent, which can be avoided by designing the electronic structure in topological insulators.

Unidirectional terahertz light absorption in the pyroelectric ferrimagnet CaBaCo4O7

Spin excitations were studied by absorption spectroscopy in CaBaCo4O7 which is a type-I multiferroic compound with the largest magnetic-order induced ferroelectric polarization (ΔP=17mC/m2) reported, so far. We observed two optical magnon branches: a solely electric dipole allowed one and a mixed magnetoelectric resonance. The entangled magnetization and polarization dynamics of the magnetoelectric resonance gives rise to unidirectional light absorption, i.e. that magnon mode absorbs the electromagnetic radiation for one propagation direction but not for the opposite direction. Our systematic study of the magnetic field and temperature dependence of magnon modes provides information about the energies and symmetries of spin excitations, which is required to develop a microscopic spin model of CaBaCo4O7.

Photoinduced demagnetization and insulator-to-metal transition in ferromagnetic insulating BaFeO$_3$ thin films

We studied the electronic and magnetic dynamics of ferromagnetic insulating BaFeO3 thin films by using pump-probe time-resolved resonant x-ray reflectivity at the Fe 2p edge. By changing the excitation density, we found two distinctly different types of demagnetization with a clear threshold behavior. We assigned the demagnetization change from slow (~ 150 ps) to fast (< 70 ps) to a transition into a metallic state induced by laser excitation. These results provide a novel approach for locally tuning magnetic dynamics. In analogy to heat assisted magnetic recording, metallization can locally tune the susceptibility for magnetic manipulation, allowing to spatially encode magnetic information.
