Evolution of spin-wave excitations in ferromagnetic metallic manganites

Neutron scattering results are presented for spin-wave excitations of three ferromagnetic metallic $A_{1-x}A^{\prime}_{x}$MnO$_3$ manganites (where $A$ and $A^\prime$ are rare- and alkaline-earth ions), which when combined with previous work elucidate systematics of the interactions as a function of carrier concentration $x$, on-site disorder, and strength of the lattice distortion. The long wavelength spin dynamics show only a very weak dependence across the series. The ratio of fourth to first neighbor exchange ($J_4/J_1$) that controls the zone boundary magnon softening changes systematically with $x$, but does not depend on the other parameters. None of the prevailing models can account for these behaviors.

Electronically smectic-like phase in a nearly half-doped manganite

We use neutron scattering to study the spin and charge/orbital ordering (CO-OO) in the nearly half-doped perovskite manganite $Pr_{0.55}(Ca_{0.8}Sr_{0.2})_{0.45}MnO_3$ (PCSMO). On cooling from room temperature, PCSMO first enters into a CO-OO state below $T_{CO}$ and then becomes a CE-type long-range ordered antiferromagnet below $T_N$. At temperatures above $T_N$ but below $T_{CO}$ ($T_N<T<T_{CO}$), the spins in PCSMO form highly anisotropic smectic liquid-crystal-like texture with ferromagnetic (FM) quasi-long-range ordered one-dimensional zigzag chains weakly coupled antiferromagnetically. Such a magnetic smectic-like phase results directly from the spin-orbit interaction and demonstrates the presence of textured `electronic soft' phases in doped Mott insulators.

Temperature-Dependent X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy of Colossal Magnetoresistive Perovskites

The temperature dependence of the O K-edge pre-edge structure in the x-ray absorption spectra of the perovskites La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3), (A = Ca, Sr; x = 0.3, 0.4) reveals a correlation between the disappearance of the splitting in the pre-edge region and the presence of Jahn-Teller distortions. The different magnitudes of the distortions for different compounds is proposed to explain some dissimilarity in the line shape of the spectra taken above the Curie temperature.

Colossal magnetoresistance without phase separation: Disorder-induced spin glass state and nanometer scale orbital-charge correlation in half doped manganites

The magnetic and electrical properties of high quality single crystals of $A$-site disordered (solid solution) Ln$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ are investigated near the phase boundary between the spin glass insulator and colossal-magnetoresistive ferromagnetic metal, locating near Ln = Sm. The temperature dependence of the ac-susceptibility and the x-ray diffuse scattering of Eu$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ are analyzed in detail. The uniformity of the random potential perturbation in Ln$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ crystals with small bandwidth yields, rather than the phase separation, an homogeneous short ranged charge/orbital order which gives rise to a nearly-atomic spin glass state. Remarkably, this microscopically disordered ``CE-glass'' state alone is able to bring forth the colossal magnetoresistance.

Temperature dependent d-d excitations in manganites probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report the observation of temperature dependent electronic excitations in various manganites utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Mn K-edge. Excitations were observed between 1.5 and 16 eV with temperature dependence found as high as 10 eV. The change in spectral weight between 1.5 and 5 eV was found to be related to the magnetic order and independent of the conductivity. On the basis of LDA+U and Wannier function calculations, this dependence is associated with intersite d-d excitations. Finally, the connection between the RIXS cross-section and the loss function is addressed.

Direct Observation of High-Temperature Polaronic Behavior In Colossal Magnetoresistive Manganites

The temperature dependence of the electronic and atomic structure of the colossal magnetoresistive oxides $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}$ (x = 0.3, 0.4) has been studied using core and valence level photoemission, x-ray absorption and emission, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. A dramatic and reversible change of the electronic structure is observed on crossing the Curie temperature, including charge localization and spin moment increase of Mn, together with Jahn-Teller distortions, both signatures of polaron formation. Our data are also consistent with a phase-separation scenario.

Soft x-ray resonant diffraction study of magnetic and orbital correlations in a manganite near half-doping

We have utilized the resonant x-ray diffraction technique at the Mn L-edge in order to directly compare magnetic and orbital correlations in the Mn sub-lattice of Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3. The resonant line shape is measured below T_OO ~ 240 K at the orbital ordering wave vector (0,1/2,0), and below T_N ~ 175 K at the antiferromagnetic wave vector (1/2,0,0). Comparing the width of the super-lattice peaks at the two wavevectors, we find that the correlation length of the magnetism exceeds that of the orbital order by nearly a factor of two. Furthermore, we observe a large (~ 3 eV) shift in spectral weight between the magnetic and orbital line shapes, which cannot be explained within the classic Goodenough picture of a charge-ordered ground state. To explain the large shift, we calculate the resonant line shapes for orbital and magnetic diffraction based on a relaxed charge-ordered model.

Coherent X-ray Scattering from Manganite Charge and Orbital Domains

We report coherent x-ray scattering studies of charge and orbital domains in manganite systems. The experiments were carried out on LaMnO_3 and Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_3, with the incident photon energy tuned near the Mn K edge. At room temperature, the orbital speckle pattern of LaMnO_3 was observed to be constant over a timescale of at least minutes, which is indicative of static orbital domains on this timescale. For Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_3, both charge and orbital speckle patterns were observed. The observation of the latter rules out the presence of fast orbital fluctuations, while long time series data-- on the order of several minutes-- were suggestive of slow dynamic behavior. In contrast, the charge order speckle patterns were static.

Structural response to O*-O' and magnetic transitions in orthorhombic perovskites

We present a temperature dependent single crystal x-ray diffraction study of twinned orthorhombic perovskites La1-xCaxMnO3, for x=0.16 and x=0.25. These data show the evolution of the crystal structure from the ferromagnetic insulating state to the ferromagnetic metallic state. The data are modelled in space group Pnma with twin relations based on a distribution of the b axis over three perpendicular cubic axes. The twin model allows full structure determination in the presence of up to six twin fractions using the single crystal x-ray diffraction data.

Orbital order induced metal-insulator transition in (La,Ca)MnO3

We present evidence that the insulator to metal transition in (La,Ca)MnO3 near x~0.2 is driven by the suppression of coherent Jahn-Teller distortions, originating from d type orbital ordering. The orbital ordered state is characterised by large long-range Q2 distortions below To*-o'. Above To*-o' we find evidence for coexistence between an orbital-ordered and -disordered state. This behaviour is discussed in terms of electronic phases of an orbital ordered insulating and orbital-disordered metallic states.

Novel stripe-type charge ordering in the metallic A-type antiferromagnet Pr{0.5}Sr{0.5}MnO{3}

We demonstrate that an A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) state of Pr{0.5}Sr{0.5}MnO{3} exhibits a novel charge ordering which governs the transport property. This charge ordering is stripe-like, being characterized by a wave vector q ~ (0,0,0.3) with very anisotropic correlation parallel and perpendicular to the stripe direction. This charge ordering is specific to the manganites with relatively wide one-electron band width (W) which often exhibit a metallic A-type AFM state, and should be strictly distinguished from the CE-type checkerboard-like charge ordering which is commonly observed in manganites with narrower W such as La{1-x}Ca{x}MnO{3} and Pr{1-x}Ca{x}MnO{3}.

Microscopic spin interactions in the CMR manganites

Using inelastic neutron scattering we measured the microscopic magnetic coupling associated with the ferromagnetic (FM) clusters of the ``colossal magnetoresistance'' (CMR) compound Pr$_{0.70}$Ca$_{0.30}$MnO$_3$. When the insulating to metal (I-M) transition is induced by an external magnetic field there is a discontinuous change in the spin-wave stiffness constant. This result indicates that the probed regions undergo a first-order transition from an insulating to a metallic state, and that there are no FM metallic domains in the insulating region. We argue that the I-M transition in the CMR manganites is more complex than the simple percolation of large FM metallic clusters.

Orbital Correlations in Doped Manganites

We review our recent x-ray scattering studies of charge and orbital order in doped manganites, with specific emphasis on the role of orbital correlations in Pr_1-xCa_xMnO_3. For x=0.25, we find an orbital structure indistinguishable from the undoped structure with long range orbital order at low temperatures. For dopings 0.3<x<0.5, we find scattering consistent with a charge and orbitally ordered CE-type structure. While in each case the charge order peaks are resolution limited, the orbital order exhibits only short range correlations. We report the doping dependence of the correlation length and discuss the connection between the orbital correlations and the finite magnetic correlation length observed on the Mn^3+ sublattice with neutron scattering techniques. The physical origin of these domains, which appear to be isotropic, remains unclear. We find that weak orbital correlations persist well above the phase transitions, with a correlation length of 1-2 lattice constants at high temperatures. Significantly, we observe similar correlations at high temperatures in La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3, which does not have an orbitally ordered ground state, and we conclude that such correlations are robust to variations in the relative strength of the electron-phonon coupling.

A Resonant X-ray Scattering Study of Octahedral Tilt Ordering in LaMnO$_3$ and Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$

We report an x-ray scattering study of octahedral tilt ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with x=0.4 and 0.25 and in LaMnO$_3$. The sensitivity to tilt ordering is achieved by tuning the incident x-ray energy to the L$_I$, L$_{II}$ and L$_{III}$ absorption edges of Pr and La, respectively. The resulting energy-dependent profiles are characterized by a dipole-resonant peak and higher energy fine structure. The polarization dependence is predominantly $σ$-to-$π$ and the azimuthal dependence follows a sin-squared behavior. These results are similar to those obtained in recent x-ray scattering studies of orbital ordering carried out in these same materials at the Mn K edge. They lead to a description of the cross-section in terms of Templeton scattering in which the tilt ordering breaks the symmetry at the rare earth site. The most interesting result of the present work is our observation that octahedral tilt ordering persists above the orbital ordering transition temperatures in all three samples. Indeed, we identify separate structural transitions which may be associated with the onset of orbital and tilt ordering, respectively, and characterize the loss of tilt ordering versus temperature in LaMnO$_3$.

Commensurate-Incommensurate transition in the melting process of the orbital ordering in Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3: neutron diffraction study

The melting process of the orbital order in Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 single crystal has been studied in detail as a function of temperature by neutron diffraction. It is demonstrated that a commensurate-incommensurate (C-IC) transition of the orbital ordering takes place in a bulk sample, being consistent with the electron diffraction studies. The lattice structure and the transport properties go through drastic changes in the IC orbital ordering phase below the charge/orbital ordering temperature Tco/oo, indicating that the anomalies are intimately related to the partial disordering of the orbital order, unlike the consensus that it is related to the charge disordering process. For the same T range, partial disorder of the orbital ordering turns on the ferromagnetic spin fluctuations which were observed in a previous neutron scattering study.

Charge Transport in Manganites: Hopping Conduction, the Anomalous Hall Effect and Universal Scaling

The low-temperature Hall resistivity ρ_{xy} of La_{2/3}A_{1/3}MnO_3 single crystals (where A stands for Ca, Pb and Ca, or Sr) can be separated into Ordinary and Anomalous contributions, giving rise to Ordinary and Anomalous Hall effects, respectively. However, no such decomposition is possible near the Curie temperature which, in these systems, is close to metal-to-insulator transition. Rather, for all of these compounds and to a good approximation, the ρ_{xy} data at various temperatures and magnetic fields collapse (up to an overall scale), on to a single function of the reduced magnetization m=M/M_{sat}, the extremum of this function lying at m~0.4. A new mechanism for the Anomalous Hall Effect in the inelastic hopping regime, which reproduces these scaling curves, is identified. This mechanism, which is an extension of Holstein's model for the Ordinary Hall effect in the hopping regime, arises from the combined effects of the double-exchange-induced quantal phase in triads of Mn ions and spin-orbit interactions. We identify processes that lead to the Anomalous Hall Effect for localized carriers and, along the way, analyze issues of quantum interference in the presence of phonon-assisted hopping. Our results suggest that, near the ferromagnet-to-paramagnet transition, it is appropriate to describe transport in manganites in terms of carrier hopping between states that are localized due to combined effect of magnetic and non-magnetic disorder. We attribute the qualitative variations in resistivity characteristics across manganite compounds to the differing strengths of their carrier self-trapping, and conclude that both disorder-induced localization and self-trapping effects are important for transport.

Correlated Polarons in Dissimilar Perovskite Manganites

We report x-ray scattering studies of broad peaks located at a (0.5 0 0)/(0 0.5 0)-type wavevector in the paramagnetic insulating phases of La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} and Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}. We interpret the scattering in terms of correlated polarons and measure isotropic correlation lengths of 1-2 lattice constants in both samples. Based on the wavevector and correlation lengths, the correlated polarons are found to be consistent with CE-type bipolarons. Differences in behavior between the samples arise as they are cooled through their respective transition temperatures and become ferromagnetic metallic (La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}) or charge and orbitally ordered insulating (Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}). Since the primary difference between the two samples is the trivalent cation size, these results illustrate the robust nature of the correlated polarons to variations in the relative strength of the electron-phonon coupling, and the sensitivity of the low-temperature ground state to such variations.

Short-range polaron correlations in the ferromagnetic La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3)

We use neutron scattering to demonstrate the presence of lattice polarons and their short-range correlations for several samples of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ in the Ca doping range $0.15\leq x\leq 0.3$. We establish the doping dependence of the orientation, commensuration, and coherence length of the polaron correlations and show that the populations of correlated and uncorrelated polarons are intimately related to the transport properties of the materials.
