Experimental Limit on Neutron Orbital Angular Momentum Detection Using Polarized 3He

A recent proposal suggested that neutron orbital angular momentum (OAM) states could be detected via spin-polarized absorption in polarized 3He, with predicted cross-section variations linked to the neutron's OAM. We experimentally tested this hypothesis using spin-polarized neutron beams with OAM =-2 to 2, generated by fork-dislocation phase-gratings, and transmitted through a polarized 3He cell. Within statistical precision, no OAM-dependent change in the absorption cross section was observed. This null result places stringent constraints on polarized 3He-based OAM detection schemes. The absence of an effect in the given regime is traced to the proposal's disregard of the spatial character of neutron OAM: unlike spin, OAM arises from the transverse phase structure of the wavefunction and couples only through spatial gradients and overlap. The transverse extent of neutron OAM modes expands rapidly, producing a doughnut-shaped intensity profile with negligible overlap with on-axis 3He nuclei, while off-axis capture samples only a locally uniform phase and reduces the interaction to the known spin dependence. These results clarify the limits of absorptive nuclear methods for probing neutron OAM and emphasize the necessity of spatially resolved interactions in any viable detection scheme.

A complete Raman mapping of phase transitions in Si under indentation

Crystalline Si substrates are studied for pressure induced phase transformation under indentation at room temperature using Berkovich tip. Raman scattering study is used for the identification of the transformed phases. Raman line as well as area mapping are used for locating the phases in the indented region. Calculation of pressure contours in the indented region is used for understanding the phase distribution. We report here a comprehensive study of all the phases of Si, reported so far, leading to possible understanding of material properties useful for possible electromechanical applications. As a major finding, distribution of amorphous phase in the indented region deviates from the conventional wisdom of being in the central region alone. We present phase mapping results for both Si(100) and Si(111) substrates.

Deformation potential dominated phonons in ZnS quantum dots

Strong deformation potential (DP) dominated Raman spectra are reported for quantum confined cubic ZnS nanoclusters under off-resonance conditions allowed only in quantum dots. A flurry of zone boundary phonons is demonstrated in the scattering process. Transverse optic (TO) mode in the multi-phonon process shows only even order overtones suggesting the dominance of a two-phonon process (having large DP value in ZnS) and its integral multiples. Two-phonon TO modes corresponding to A1 and B2 symmetries are also demonstrated under off-resonance conditions which are allowed only in quantum dots.

Suppression of core polarization in halo nuclei

We present a microscopic study of halo nuclei, starting from the Paris and Bonn potentials and employing a two-frequency shell model approach. It is found that the core-polarization effect is dramatically suppressed in such nuclei. Consequently the effective interaction for halo nucleons is almost entirely given by the bare G-matrix alone, which presently can be evaluated with a high degree of accuracy. The experimental pairing energies between the two halo neutrons in $^6$He and $^{11}$Li nuclei are satisfactorily reproduced by our calculation. It is suggested that the fundamental nucleon-nucleon interaction can be probed in a clearer and more direct way in halo nuclei than in ordinary nuclei.
