Specific Heat of the S=1/2 Two-Dimensional Shastry-Sutherland Antiferromagnet SrCu2(BO3)2 in High Magnetic Fields

We characterize the field-induced magnetic phases of SrCu2(BO3)2, a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland lattice, using specific heat in magnetic fields up to 33 T. We find that the spin gap persists above the expected critical field Hc = Delta/g*mu_B of 21 T despite the appearance of magnetic moment in the ground state. At the magnetization plateau at 1/8 of the saturation, the Sz = +1 triplets that carry the magnetization of the ground state are observed to form a two-dimensional spin gas of massive bosons. A spin gas consisting of the same number of massive particles continues to completely dominate the specific heat in the field region above the plateau, although the magnetization increases with increasing field. Ordering is observed at a temperature immediately below the spin-gas regime.

Raman scattering study of charge ordering in beta-Ca0.33V2O5

Polarized Raman spectra of the calcium vanadium oxide bronze beta-Ca0.33V2O5 are measured in the temperature range between 300 K and 20 K. The charge ordering phase transition at about 150 K is characterized by the appearance of the new Raman-active modes in the spectra, and by anomalies in the electronic background scattering. The high temperature Raman scattering spectra of beta-Ca0.33V2O5 are in apparent resemblance with those of alpha'-NaV2O5, which suggests that there is a similar charge-phonon dynamics in both compounds. The study of dynamical properties and the symmetry analysis of the Raman modes show that in the mixed valence state of beta-Ca0.33V2O5 the electrons are delocalized into V1-O5-V3 orbitals. We propose that in the charge ordered state below 150 K the d-electrons localize within V1-V3 ladders, either in "zig-zag" fashion like in alpha'-NaV2O5 or in the forms of the double chains like in gamma-LiV2O5.

Orbital Dimerization and Dynamic Jahn-Teller Effect in NaTiSi$_2$O$_6$

We study with the Raman scattering technique two types of phase transitions in the pyroxene compounds NaMSi$_2$O$_6$ (with M=Ti, V, and Cr). In the quasi one-dimensional S=1/2 system NaTiSi$_2$O$_6$ we observe anomalous high-temperature phonon broadening and large changes of the phonon energies and line-widths across the phase transition at 210 K. The phonon anomalies originate from an orbital order-disorder phase transition and these results --combined with theoretical considerations-- indicate that the high temperature dynamical Jahn-Teller phase of NaTiSi$_2$O$_6$ exhibits a spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry into a dimerized, Jahn-Teller distorted, orbital ordered state under the formation of spin valence bonds. In S=1 NaVSi$_2$O$_6$ orbital degrees of freedom are strongly suppressed and the magnetic excitations are well described within a Heisenberg model, indicating that at T$_N$=19K this system orders antiferromagnetically.

Charge ordering signatures in the optical properties of beta-Na0.33V2O5

Temperature dependent optical spectra are reported for beta-Na0.33V2O5. The sodium ordering transition at T_Na = 240 K, and in particular the charge ordering transition at T_MI = 136 K strongly influence the optical spectra. The metal-insulator transition at \tmi leads to the opening of a psuedogap (\hbarω= 1700 cm-1), and to the appearance of a large number of optical phonons. These observations, and the presence of a mid-infrared band (typical for low dimensional metals) strongly suggests that the charge carriers in beta-Na0.33V2O5 are small polarons.

Electronic structure of Cr1-dS (d=0,0.17) with NiAs-type crystal structure

Valence-band and conduction-band electronic structure of CrS (d=0) and Cr5S6 (d=0.17) has been investigated by means of photoemission and inverse-photoemission spectroscopies. Bandwidth of the valence bands of Cr5S6 (8.5 eV) is wider than that of CrS (8.1 eV), though the Cr 3d partial density of states evaluated from the Cr 3p-3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy is almost unchanged between the two compounds with respect to the shapes including binding energies. The Cr 3d (t2g) exchange splitting energies of CrS and Cr5S6 are determined to be 3.9 and 3.3 eV, respectively.

Charge and sodium ordering in beta-Na_0.33V_2O_5

Polarized Raman and optical spectra for the quasi one-dimensional metallic vanadate beta-Na0.33V2O3 are reported for various temperatures. The spectra are discussed in the light of the sodium and charge ordering transitions occurring in this material, and demonstrate the presence of strong electron phonon coupling.

ASCA Slew Survey

We are systematically analyzing ASCA GIS data taken during the satellite attitude maneuver operation. Our motivation is to search for serendipitous hard X-ray sources and make the ASCA Slew Survey catalog. During its operational life from 1993 February to 2000 July, ASCA carried out more than 2,500 maneuver operations, and total exposure time during the maneuver was ~415 ksec after data screening. Preliminary results are briefly reported.

Magnetic Superstructure in the Two-Dimensional Quantum Antiferromagnet SrCu2(BO3)2

We report the observation of magnetic superstructure in a magnetization plateau state of SrCu2(BO3)2, a frustrated quasi-two-dimensional quantum spin system. The Cu and B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra at 35 mllikelvin indicate an apparently discontinuous phase transition from uniform magnetization to a modulated superstructure near 27 tesla, above which a magnetization plateau at 1/8 of the full saturation has been observed. Comparison of the Cu NMR spectrum and the theoretical analysis of a Heisenberg spin model demonstrates the crystallization of itinerant triplets in the plateau phase within a large rhomboid unit cell (16 spins per layer) showing oscillations of the spin polarization. Thus we are now in possession of an interesting model system to study a localization transition of strongly interacting quantum particles.

New Stacking Variations of the CE-type Structure in the Metal-Ordered Manganite YBaMn2O6

For the paramagnetic insulating phase in the metal-ordered manganite YBaMn2O6, the so-called CE-type of charge/orbital ordered state was observed within the monoclinic ab-plane, which is most commonly observed for the ordinary half doped manganites. However, TEM revealed a 4-fold periodicity along the c-axis, suggesting a new stacking pattern, where planes of the CE-type are built up according to the sequence [aabb...]. Interestingly, when th system enters into the antiferromagnetic state, this stacking pattern changes into [aaaa...] or [abab], suggesting close interplay between spins and orbitals. These features are discusses in terms of inherent structural alternation, i.e., the Y/Ba order along the c-axis.

Structures and Electromagnetic Properties of New Metal-Ordered Manganites; RBaMn_{2}O_{6} (R = Y and Rare Earth Elements)

New metal-ordered manganites RBaMn_{2}O_{6} have been synthesized and investigated in the structures and electromagnetic properties. RBaMn_{2}O_{6} can be classified into three groups from the structural and electromagnetic properties. The first group (R = La, Pr and Nd) has a metallic ferromagnetic transition, followed by an A-type antiferromagnetic transition in PrBaMn_{2}O_{6}. The second group (R = Sm, Eu and Gd) exhibits a charge-order transition, followed by an antiferromagnetic long range ordering. The third group (R = Tb, Dy and Ho) shows successive three phase transitions, the structural, charge/orbital-order and magnetic transitions, as observed in YBaMn_{2}O_{6}. Comparing to the metal-disordered manganites (R^{3+}_{0.5}A^{2+}_{0.5})MnO_{3}, two remarkable features can be recognized in RBaMn_{2}O_{6}; (1) relatively high charge-order transition temperature and (2) the presence of structural transition above the charge-order temperature in the third group. We propose a possible orbital ordering at the structural transition, that is a possible freezing of the orbital, charge and spin degrees of freedom at the independent temperatures in the third group. These features are closely related to the peculiar structure that the MnO_{2} square-lattice is sandwiched by the rock-salt layers of two kinds, RO and BaO with extremely different lattice-sizes.

Study of the Largest Multiwavelength Campaign of the Microquasar GRS 1915+105

We present the results from a multiwavelength campaign of GRS 1915+105 performed from 2000 April 16 to 25. This is one of the largest coordinated set of observations ever performed for this source, covering the wide energy band in radio (13.3-0.3 cm), near-infrared (J-H-K), X-rays and Gamma-rays (from 1 keV to 10 MeV). During the campaign GRS 1915+105 was predominantly in the "plateau" (or low/hard) state but sometimes showed soft X-ray oscillations: before April 20.3, rapid, quasi-periodic (~= 45 min) flare-dip cycles were observed. The radio flares observed on April 17 shows frequency- dependent peak delay, consistent with an expansion of synchrotron-emitting region starting at the transition from the hard-dip to the soft-flare states in X-rays. On the other hand, infrared flares on April 20 appear to follow (or precede) the beginning of X-ray oscillations with an inconstant time delay of ~= 5-30 min. This implies that the infrared emitting region is located far from the black hole by >~ 10E13 cm, while its size is <~ 10E12 cm constrained from the time variability. We find a good correlation between the quasi-steady flux level in the near-infrared band and in the X-ray band. From this we estimate that the reprocessing of X-rays, probably occurring in the outer parts of the accretion disk, accounts for about 20-30% of the observed K magnitude in the plateau state. The OSSE spectrum in the 0.05-10 MeV band is represented by a single power law with a photon index of 3.1 extending to ~1 MeV with no cutoff. The power-law slope above ~30 keV is found to be very similar between different states in spite of large flux variations in soft X-rays, implying that the electron energy distribution is not affected by the change of the state in the accretion disk.

Cu nuclear spin-spin coupling in the dimer singlet state in SrCu2(BO3)2

We report results of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments in SrCu2(BO3)2, a quasi two-dimensional spin system with a singlet ground state. When magnetic field is applied along the c-axis, each of the quadrupole split Cu resonance lines splits further into four lines. The spin-echo intensity for some of the split lines oscillates against the separation time between the pai/2 and the pai rf-pulses. These phenomena are due to strong nuclear spin-spin coupling mediated by the electronic spin system, which exists only within a pair of nuclei. Thus the results provides direct evidence for the dimer singlet gorund state in this material.

Optical properties of NaxV2O5

The optical properties of sodium-deficient NaxV2O5 (0.85 < x <1) single crystals are analyzed in the wide energy range, from 0.012 to 4.5 eV, using ellipsometry, infrared reflectivity, and Raman scattering techniques. The material remains insulating up to the maximal achieved hole concentration of about 15%. In sodium deficient samples the optical absorption peak associated to the fundamental electronic gap develops at about 0.44 eV. It corresponds to the transition between vanadium dxy and the impurity band, which forms in the middle of the pure NaV2O5 gap. Raman spectra measured with incident photon energy larger then 2 eV show strong resonant behavior, due to the presence of the hole-doping activated optical transitions, peaked at 2.8 eV.

Energy Dependence of a Low Frequency QPO in GRS 1915+105

We analyze a set of three RXTE Target of Opportunity observations of the Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105, observed on April 2000, during a multi-wavelength campaign. During the three observations, a strong, variable low frequency (2-9 Hz) quasi periodic oscillation (hereafter QPO), often referred to as the ubiquitous QPO, is detected together with its first harmonic. We study the spectral properties of both features, and show that : 1) their frequency variations are better correlated with the soft X-ray flux (2-5 keV), favoring thus the location of the QPO in the accretion disk; 2) the QPO affects more the hard X-rays, usually taken as the signature of an inverse compton scattering of the soft photons in a corona; 3) the fundamental and its harmonic do not behave in the same manner: the fundamental sees its power increase with the energy up to 40 keV, whereas the harmonic increases up to $\sim 10$ keV. The results presented here could find an explanation in the context of the Accretion-Ejection Instability, which could appear as a rotating spiral or hot point located in the disk, between its innermost edge and the corotation radius. The presence of the harmonic could then be a signature of the non-linear behavior of the instability. The high-energy (>40 keV) decrease of the fundamental would favor an interpretation where most or all of the quasi-periodic modulation at high energies comes, not from the comptonized corona as usually assumed, but from a hot point in the optically thick disk

Dzyaloshinski-Moriya Interaction in the 2D Spin Gap System SrCu2(BO3)2

The Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction partially lifts the magnetic frustration of the spin-1/2 oxide SrCu2(BO3)2. It explains the fine structure of the excited triplet state and its unusual magnetic field dependence, as observed in previous ESR and new neutron inelastic scattering experiments. We claim that it is mainly responsible for the dispersion. We propose also a new mechanism for the observed ESR transitions forbidden by standard selection rules, that relies on an instantaneous Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction induced by spin-phonon couplings.

Strong damping of phononic heat current by magnetic excitations in SrCu_2(BO_3)_2

Measurements of the thermal conductivity as a function of temperature and magnetic field in the 2D dimer spin system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ are presented. In zero magnetic field the thermal conductivity along and perpendicular to the magnetic planes shows a pronounced double-peak structure as a function of temperature. The low-temperature maximum is drastically suppressed with increasing magnetic field. Our quantitative analysis reveals that the heat current is due to phonons and that the double-peak structure arises from pronounced resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations.

Successive Phase Transitions in a Metal-Ordered Manganite Perovskite YBaMn2O6

Structural, magnetic and electric properties of a metal-ordered perovskite YBaMn2O6 have been studied by means of powder X-ray diffraction, DSC, magnetic susceptibility, and electric resistivity. It is found that this material undergoes a 1st order structural phase transition at Tc1=520 K, from a pseudo orthorhombic (monoclinic) phase to a pseudo tetragonal (monoclinic) one. Accompanied by this transition, the susceptibility exhibits a sharp drop, where ferromagnetic exchange interaction becomes antiferromagnetic. Furthermore, two more transitions, a metal-insulator transition at Tc2=480 K and an antiferromagnetic ordering at Tc3=200 K, have been observed respectively.

Heat transport in SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 and CuGeO_3

In the low dimensional spin systems $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$ and $CuGeO_3$ the thermal conductivities along different crystal directions show pronounced double-peak structures and strongly depend on magnetic fields. For $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$ the experimental data can be described by a purely phononic heat current and resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations. A similar effect seems to be important in $CuGeO_3$, too but, in addition, a magnetic contribution to the heat transport may be present.
