Fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H=0$ and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble

The goal of this paper is to establish a relation between characteristic polynomials of $N\times N$ GUE random matrices $\mathcal{H}$ as $N\to\infty$, and Gaussian processes with logarithmic correlations. We introduce a regularized version of fractional Brownian motion with zero Hurst index, which is a Gaussian process with stationary increments and logarithmic increment structure. Then we prove that this process appears as a limit of $D_N(z)=-\log|\det(\mathcal{H}-zI)|$ on mesoscopic scales as $N\to\infty$. By employing a Fourier integral representation, we use this to prove a continuous analogue of a result by Diaconis and Shahshahani [J. Appl. Probab. 31A (1994) 49-62]. On the macroscopic scale, $D_N(x)$ gives rise to yet another type of Gaussian process with logarithmic correlations. We give an explicit construction of the latter in terms of a Chebyshev-Fourier random series.

Statistics of resonance width shifts as a signature of eigenfunction non-orthogonality

We consider an open (scattering) quantum system under the action of a perturbation of its closed counterpart. It is demonstrated that the resulting shift of resonance widths is a sensitive indicator of the non-orthogonality of resonance wavefunctions, being zero only if those were orthogonal. Focusing further on chaotic systems, we employ random matrix theory to introduce a new type of parametric statistics in open systems, and derive the distribution of the resonance width shifts in the regime of weak coupling to the continuum.

Universal and non-universal features of the multifractality exponents of critical wave-functions

We calculate perturbatively the multifractality spectrum of wave-functions in critical random matrix ensembles in the regime of weak multifractality. We show that in the leading order the spectrum is universal, while the higher order corrections are model-specific. Explicit results for the anomalous dimensions are derived in the power-law and ultrametric random matrix ensembles.

Resonance Scattering of Waves in Chaotic Systems

This is a brief overview of RMT applications to quantum or wave chaotic resonance scattering, focusing mainly on theoretical results obtained via non-perturbative methods starting from mid-nineties.

Anderson localization transition and eigenfunction multifractality in ensemble of ultrametric random matrices

We demonstrate that by considering disordered single-particle Hamiltonians (or their random matrix versions) on ultrametric spaces one can generate an interesting class of models exhibiting Anderson metal-insulator transition. We use the weak disorder virial expansion to determine the critical value of the parameters and to calculate the values of the multifractal exponents for inverse participation ratios. Direct numerical simulations agree favourably with the analytical predictions.

Hyperbolic Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation made rigorous

We revisit a long standing issue in the theory of disordered electron systems and their effective description by a non-linear sigma model: the hyperbolic Hubbard-Stratonovich (HS) transformation in the bosonic sector. For time-reversal invariant systems without spin this sector is known to have a non-compact orthogonal symmetry O(p,q). There exists an old proposal by Pruisken and Schaefer how to do the HS transformation in an O(p,q) invariant way. Giving a precise formulation of this proposal, we show that the HS integral is a sign-alternating sum of integrals over disjoint domains.

A conjecture on Hubbard-Stratonovich transformations for the Pruisken-Schäfer parameterisations of real hyperbolic domains

Rigorous justification of the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation for the Pruisken-Schäfer type of parameterisations of real hyperbolic O(m,n)-invariant domains remains a challenging problem. We show that a naive choice of the volume element invalidates the transformation, and put forward a conjecture about the correct form which ensures the desired structure. The conjecture is supported by complete analytic solution of the problem for groups O(1,1) and O(2,1), and by a method combining analytical calculations with a simple numerical evaluation of a two-dimensional integral in the case of the group O(2,2).

Exact relations between multifractal exponents at the Anderson transition

Two exact relations between mutlifractal exponents are shown to hold at the critical point of the Anderson localization transition. The first relation implies a symmetry of the multifractal spectrum linking the multifractal exponents with indices $q<1/2$ to those with $q>1/2$. The second relation connects the wave function multifractality to that of Wigner delay times in a system with a lead attached.

Scattering, reflection and impedance of waves in chaotic and disordered systems with absorption

We review recent progress in analysing wave scattering in systems with both intrinsic chaos and/or disorder and internal losses, when the scattering matrix is no longer unitary. By mapping the problem onto a nonlinear supersymmetric sigma-model, we are able to derive closed form analytic expressions for the distribution of reflection probability in a generic disordered system. One of the most important properties resulting from such an analysis is statistical independence between the phase and the modulus of the reflection amplitude in every perfectly open channel. The developed theory has far-reaching consequences for many quantities of interest, including local Green functions and time delays. In particular, we point out the role played by absorption as a sensitive indicator of mechanisms behind the Anderson localisation transition. We also provide a random-matrix-based analysis of S-matrix and impedance correlations for various symmetry classes as well as the distribution of transmitted power for systems with broken time-reversal invariance, completing previous works on the subject. The results can be applied, in particular, to the experimentally accessible impedance and reflection in a microwave or ultrasonic cavity attached to a system of antennas.

Universal statistics of the local Green's function in quantum chaotic systems with absorption

We establish a general relation between the statistics of the local Green's function for systems with chaotic wave scattering and a uniform energy loss (absorption) and its two-point correlation function for the same system without absorption. Within the random matrix approach this kind of a fluctuation dissipation relation allows us to derive the explicit analytical expression for the joint distribution function of the real and imaginary parts of the local Green function for all symmetry classes as well as at an arbitrary degree of the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the system. The outstanding problem of the orthogonal symmetry is further reduced to simple quadratures. The results can be applied, in particular, to the experimentally accessible impedance and reflection in a microwave cavity attached to a single-mode antenna.

Correlation functions of impedance and scattering matrix elements in chaotic absorbing cavities

Wave scattering in chaotic systems with a uniform energy loss (absorption) is considered. Within the random matrix approach we calculate exactly the energy correlation functions of different matrix elements of impedance or scattering matrices for systems with preserved or broken time-reversal symmetry. The obtained results are valid at any number of arbitrary open scattering channels and arbitrary absorption. Elastic enhancement factors (defined through the ratio of the corresponding variance in reflection to that in transmission) are also discussed.

Statistics of delay times in mesoscopic systems as a manifestation of eigenfunction fluctuations

We reveal a general explicit relation between the statistics of delay times in one-channel reflection from a mesoscopic sample of any spatial dimension and the statistics of the eigenfunction intensities in its closed counterpart. This opens a possibility to use experimentally measurable delay times as a sensitive probe of eigenfunction fluctuations. For the particular case of quasi-one dimensional geometry of the sample we use an alternative technique to derive the probability density of partial delay times for any number of open channels.

On matrix model partition functions for QCD with chemical potential

Partition functions of two different matrix models for QCD with chemical potential are computed for an arbitrary number of quark and complex conjugate anti-quark flavors. In the large-N limit of weak nonhermiticity complete agreement is found between the two models. This supports the universality of such fermionic partition functions, that is of products of characteristic polynomials in the complex plane. In the strong nonhermiticity limit agreement is found for an equal number of quark and conjugate flavours. For a general flavor content the equality of partition functions holds only for small chemical potential. The chiral phase transition is analyzed for an arbitrary number of quarks, where the free energy presents a discontinuity of first order at a critical chemical potential. In the case of nondegenerate flavors there is first order phase transition for each separate mass scale.

Real roots of Random Polynomials: Universality close to accumulation points

We identify the scaling region of a width O(n^{-1}) in the vicinity of the accumulation points $t=\pm 1$ of the real roots of a random Kac-like polynomial of large degree n. We argue that the density of the real roots in this region tends to a universal form shared by all polynomials with independent, identically distributed coefficients c_i, as long as the second moment σ=E(c_i^2) is finite. In particular, we reveal a gradual (in contrast to the previously reported abrupt) and quite nontrivial suppression of the number of real roots for coefficients with a nonzero mean value μ_n = E(c_i) scaled as μ_n\sim n^{-1/2}.

Fano interference and cross-section fluctuations in molecular photodissociation

We derive an expression for the total photodissociation cross section of a molecule incorporating both indirect processes that proceed through excited resonances, and direct processes. We show that this cross section exhibits generalized Beutler-Fano line shapes in the limit of isolated resonances. Assuming that the closed system can be modeled by random matrix theory, we derive the statistical properties of the photodissociation cross section and find that they are significantly affected by the direct processes. We identify a unique signature of the direct processes in the cross-section distribution in the limit of isolated resonances.

Universal random matrix correlations of ratios of characteristic polynomials at the spectral edges

It has been shown recently [10] that Cauchy transforms of orthogonal polynomials appear naturally in general correlation functions containing ratios of characteristic polynomials of random NxN Hermitian matrices. Our main goal is to investigate the issue of universality of large N asymptotics for those Cauchy transforms for a wide class of weight functions. Our analysis covers three different scaling regimes: the "hard edge", the "bulk" and the "soft edge" of the spectrum, thus extending the earlier results known for the bulk. The principal tool is to show that for finite matrix size N the auxiliary "wave functions" associated with the Cauchy transforms obey the same second order differential equation as those associated with the orthogonal polynomials themselves.

Wigner Random Banded Matrices with Sparse Structure: Local Spectral Density of States

Random banded matrices with linearly increasing diagonal elements are recently considered as an attractive model for complex nuclei and atoms. Apart from early papers by Wigner \cite{Wig} there were no analytical studies on the subject. In this letter we present analytical and numerical results for local spectral density of states (LDOS) for more general case of matrices with a sparsity inside the band. The crossover from the semicircle form of LDOS to that given by the Breit-Wigner formula is studied in detail.
